To support it’s technology-oriented mission, Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota needed a new “smart” lecture hall, but funding was not available to build a new facility. While Koch Hazard Architects worked with the University on overall campus planning issues, an exciting concept emerged: Insert the needed 200+ seat technology instruction lecture hall into a historic gymnasium space on campus.

New technology classroom facilities have been integrated into the old Performing Arts Center facility, also known as the original Women’s Gym constructed in 1910. The historic women’s gymnasium building was being used for the music and theater departments and they were moving to a more modern facility shared with the City of Madison. The original 2nd floor gymnasium space had been converted to theater practice space with wood platform seating, salvaged chairs, and a makeshift stage. All of the existing arched windows were covered over with stud wall construction and the interior was painted black.

Rather than building permanent seating within the former gymnasium space, a flexible riser-style seating system was designed to allow the space to change as technology and instruction methods evolve over time. This also allowed much of the character of the original space to be retained. Its integration of current technologies into all curriculum areas and its historic building stock are defining characteristics of the DSU campus, so the introduction of an advanced technology infrastructure into a facility dating to the early years of the campus is particularly appropriate here. The resulting contrasts highlight both the technology and the historic structure. The future is represented within the framework of the past.

An assessment was performed with the DSU senior staff to identify the need for an additional classroom and lecture hall space with full distance learning capability and the latest in technology to accommodate the significant growth at Dakota State University. DSU is one of six public universities in South Dakota. It’s mission is primarily the teaching of technology. The original large upper floor gymnasium space has been rehabilitated for use as a lecture hall and portions of the suspended former running track overlooking the gym have been converted to offices and a new computer lab.

The main level provides two large distance learning / e-learning classrooms and an instructional conference room for student, faculty and community uses as well as offices for the distance education department. Advanced computer labs, a production studio and conferencing facilities round out the program. An elevator and second stair were carefully and unobtrusively inserted within the existing footprint.
