INTRODUCTION Since the original building was built, the number of students in the Sioux Falls School District has more than doubled. Administrative needs had expanded faster than enrollment and substantial additional Board, public and meeting space was needed.

Design Goal: Update building character to represent the district in the 21st Century. The board room and public areas are housed in a central metal clad element that links the original and new office wings. Its curving form rises to express the importance of the public element of board decision making.

Design Goal: Integrate exterior mechanical systems into a building which has four public sides. The central curving element conceals the mechanical system penthouse and screened chiller pad, integrating them into the basic form of the building.
Design Goal: Maintain full occupancy and operation during construction. The project was phased to complete the addition prior to the start of renovation.

The form of the board room element and lobby makes a clear statement of entry. Two entrances minimize walking distance from parking. The lobby is designed to bring in abundant natural light and incorporates large display areas for student art.

Design Goal: Provide flexible space The Board room and conference room are reconfigurable into a variety of sizes and settings and the conference rooms are accessible from both the public and staff areas of the building. The lobby functions as a secure, welcome area during the day and as a reception/welcome space for Board and other meetings in the evening.

SITE PLAN
The original one-story, precast concrete IPC building was built in 1965. The expansion site is to the south of the original building.

Design Goal: Seamlessly integrate the interior work spaces of the addition with the original building.

This was accomplished by wrapping the offices and work areas around the new Lobby/commons, Board room and conference rooms.
