The new two-story Longfellow Elementary School replaces an existing school on the same city block. Its compact design allows for the existing school to remain during construction and maximizes the area for the playground.

The twenty classrooms are arranged around a central core of double height space containing the commons, library and gymnasium. The exterior character of the brick, pre-cast concrete and sloped roofs pays homage to the era of the original building and compliments the residential neighborhood.

“We wanted cost-effective construction and maintenance, large classrooms, a building that would fit on the existing block without interrupting instruction in the current building, a gymnasium that would serve both elementary physical education and high school practices, as well as all the specific details every person who would be working in the new building wanted to see in the new Longfellow,” said Joseph Graves, Superintendent of Schools. “They fit all this in and more.“
