Rudy's Barbershop Brand History

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE. RUDY’S BARBERSHOP OFFERS QUALITY CUTS AND COLOR IN A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT AT A GREAT PRICE.

SINCE 1993 1993: Bill Clinton is elected into office, Jurassic Park hits the big screen, In Utero is topping the charts, and Rudy’s Barbershop opens it’s first location in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Founded by 3 friends, Alex Calderwood, Wade Weigel, and Dave Peterson. What’s now known as the Pike/Pine Corridor was just beginning to emerge alongside the city’s booming new music scene. The graffiti kids who were hired to paint the first mural suggested the name Rudy’s after the character from Fat Albert in honor of his carefree personality. It seemed to fit. Alex, Wade, and Dave set out to create more than a salon or barbershop. It was about an idea that we could all come together and have a good time. Since its Seattle conception in 1993, Rudy’s Barbershop has been committed to providing top-notch haircuts and color for men and women at an affordable price. Rudy’s offers a one-of-a-kind experience with a curated blend of art, music, and sense of place. Every shop is a cross-generational community center, buzzing with creative energy.

“ PEOPLE TELL THEIR BARBER THINGS THEY WON’T TELL THEIR THERAPIST” -KC Ellis, New York Stylist

OUR MANIFESTO Reward our employees' self discipline with a relaxed and creative work environment Foster disruptive change, to ensure fresh ideas have room to flourish Cultivate divergent thinking Do the right thing, every time Partner with people we admire, not the highest bidder Walk in to a Rudy’s Barbershop and you’ll find a diverse blend of people in the chair. Don’t be surprised to encounter the singer of a local punk band, a congressman, and a five year old girl sitting side by side, engaging in conversation. Our stylists love working for Rudy’s. Many of them are artists, musicians, or have some ambitious life outside of work. At Rudy’s they’re encouraged to be creative. A stylist taking 3 months off to go on tour is typical and we like it that way.

DO THE RIGHT THING, EVERY TIME. Rudy’s Barbershop is a long time ally of the LGBT community and regularly joins the It Gets Better Project in advocating for LGBT youth. The It Gets Better Project was founded by Dan Savage and Terry Miller. They inspired more than 50,000 videos of support and encouragement and continues as a worldwide movement against the harassment and bullying of LGBT youth. Savage is pictured sporting the 2012 collaborative t-shirt created by Rudy’s to raise funds and awareness for It Gets Better. In 2015 Rudy’s launched a design contest for the shirt to further the community’s involvement.

CUT AND RIDE Rudy’s Barbershop has a long history of supporting art, music, and causes we care about. This support has ranged from funding independent films to taking local bands on tour with them providing free cuts on the road. In 2014 we transformed an Airstream trailer into a mobile barbershop following Seattle’s Tacocat on their West Coast tour. Since then the Airstream has found it’s way to community centers and music festivals across the West Coast.
