Design the future - This is how I see it Industrial design engineers have the ability to create relevant products to improve people’s life through everyday solutions. They rely on both creative and scientific skills, and are capable to find great insights in human needs in order to develop useful, exciting and appealing products. My passion for sports and art expresses itself in being a competitive team player with a great interest in culture and design, and a large curiosity for others. Playful and sportive I am a team player and think the best results come from doing the best you can, while having fun on the way. In that way, for me design is like a team sport. And as a team member I make effort in constantly improving my personal skills. Teamed up, different skills and specializations are combined to come to a collective result, the victory. Sustainable Innovation should provide meaningful improvements to human lives, without environmental or social burden. I made

social responsibility an important part in my education and see an urge in keeping that focus in the future. Conceptual Creating innovative concepts is my passion and specialization. Having my bag packed with a wide range of creativity techniques and a great deal of energy I am eager to use the power of imagination. Embodiment As a designer from a Delft University of Technology, I have the skills to develop the idea into a product. In the embodiment phase I am focused on production, materialization and ergonomics to make appealing products that can actually be made.

Essensia - A convivial coffee maker for Philips The Essensia is a unique drip filter coffee machine that focuses on the essence of brewing: fresh coffee and boiling water. This concept combines usability with an elegant design to make drip filter coffee special again.

The product Keywords Concept Design / Aesthetics / User research

drip filter coffee.

Product The Essensia shows the simplicity of the drip filter process by innovative use and a design that can be brought to the coffee table. The ordinary becomes special again. Use Fill the Essensia with water in the water jug, and coffee in the filter. Attach the two jugs to each other with the filter in the middle and the system is ready to be heated. After bringing the water to the boiling point on the hotplate the jugs are twisted and the coffee jug fills with good old

The user has freedom to let it drip where he or she wants it to, without bringing the whole appliance. So the user can sit with friends and family while the coffee drips and stays warm in the isolating double glass jug. Focus Extensive user research played an important role in the concept development. Different observational research techniques concerning applied ergonomics were performed and let to great usability of an innovative concept.

Pollux - A solar ligh solution for The Light Factory A

72

The Pollux is a lumiere and solar panel in one. It is designed for rural areas in developing countries. During the day the battery is charged. 326

Solar energy powers the lamp or external appliances.

Exploded view of first version

The product Keywords Embodiment / CAD / Technical documentation Product The Castor is developed for “The Light Factory, a non profit organization that brings lighting to developing countries. A solar panel charges the battery, and powers the LED light and USB connection. Focus In this project I specifically worked on the embodiment design, made 3D CAD models and worked on the technical documentation. Multiple iterations of the design process were done to come up with the final product..

The PSS stroller - The development of a product service system for a Bugaboo Stroller How can people, planet and profit benefit when strollers are leased instead of sold? For my graduation project at Bugaboo I explored the possibilities of product service systems. I developed a leasing system, designed a new buggy concept, and came up with a design tool for product optimization for refurbishment.

Creating value The most important advantage for the user is that the product can be leased for only the period it is required. Therefore, the customer can lease different strollers that are dedicated to either babies or toddlers. This makes that the concept of strollers is approached totally differently. Currently, strollers are suitable from birth until the age of 36 months. A stroller in a PSS can offer more dedicated solutions for children of different ages.

To minimize environmental impact there was chosen for these design strategies: design for refurbishment and design for recycling.

Buggy concept Keywords Context mapping / Concept design Product definition Context mapping sessions offered rich insights in parents’ needs during the different ages of their baby. With those insights it was defined how a dedicated stroller for 0-14 month old babies should be different from a stroller for 14-36 month old toddlers. Bugaboo currently offer products that are well suitable for newborn babies. A buggy dedicated for toddlers is currently missing. A concept design is made for such a Buggy.

part(s) of PSS stroller

Keywords Desig for refurbishment / Methodology / Redesign Product definition A product that is leased should be designed differently that products that are sold, on a part level. This is because of an extended product lifespan and an aberrant user perception toward used products. Part of my graduation thesis was to come up with a design strategy that enables designers and engineers of Bugaboo to design specifically for PSS.

With the design tool they can assess any part of an existing product, or new concept. With the tool there can be determined whether the part has to be redesign or not. If so, it suggest the appropriate design strategy for this part. The tool is made for stroller design, but can used for other product categories as well. - I presented this design tool at the products-that-last research consortium-

Skate Brace - Enhancing skating performance The Skate Brace prevents ankle buckling while enabling forward movement for enhanced skating results. This project focuses on the development of a skating support for professional skaters from idea to proof of principle.

Exploring Kinetic configurations

Prototyping

Testing: 6 degrees of ankel buckling instead of 12

The product Keywords Embodiment / Prototyping / Testing / Ergonomics Product The Skate Brace prevents buckling by making an extra connection between the skate and the body. The connection between the brace and skate fits under every professional speed skate for both short track as well as long track. The brace is connected with the body by a strap that grabs firmly but comfortable around the lower leg. A hinge and sliding bearing enables the leg to bend over, while ankle buckling is prevented. Process Creating a product this closely related to the human body asks for extensive prototyping and testing. First, kinetic concepts were developed from which the working was simulated in CAD software. Then, a prototype was build and tested among professional speed skaters. Finally, testing results were used to make an elaborated redesign. Improving and Redesign

Intelline - Careless cooking for Vatti The Intelline is a range hood for the mainstream European market, and is designed for a Chinese manufacturer in kitchen appliances. It functions automatically for optimal air ventilation in the kitchen to offer careless cooking to everyone.

Touch screen appears when extraction is activated

The product Keywords Concept Design / Strategic / User insights Product User studies showed how people failed to use their range hood properly. Therefore, intelligent air ventilation is proposed which includes two innovative functionalities: 1. Intelligent cooking extraction during cooking 2. Intelligent continuous air ventilation after cooking Intelligence Intelligence in the Intelline means that cooking fumes are measured automatically, the hood reacts on it

and extract the fumes accordingly. Fumes that are not captured by the hood are extracted by the continuous ventilation in the “shelves” that extract the air at a low capacity during five hours after cooking. Appearance Since the Intelline works automatically, the product settles with a modest appearance. This is reflected in all facets of the embodiment. First, the user interface is invisible when no user interaction is easy to use. Secondly, the product is designed minimalistic. It’s not the product itself that attracts the attention, but it is supportive to the kitchen.

Banyan Box - A step by step solar system The Banyan Box is a product that aims at the base of the pyramid. A product is developed as well as an implementation strategy. Step by step investments should enable rural Cambodian households to use electricity in a safe an sustainable way.

The product Keywords Sustainable / Base of the Pyramid / Solar energy Project This project was part of the minor Sustainable Design and is done for Kamworks; a NGO that produces and sales solar solutions in Cambodia. My focus in this group project was research on implementation in Cambodia, the concept development and solar calculations. Step by step To limit the initial costs the system can be purchased in steps:

1) Buy battery box 2) Recharge battery at central solar charge station and safe money in comparison to charging by combustion engine. 3) Buy a solar panel and have your power for free. The product The product contains a battery, a solar cell and controlling electronics in sealed box, ensuring safe usage. Sockets can be connected to the box to bring the electricity everywhere in and around the house. The design is embodied for production in a Cambodian factory with low tech production techniques.
