THE MASTER OF SCIENCE IN FINANCE

American University’s Kogod School of Business Master of Science in Finance (MSF) provides students with a rigorous and intellectually sophisticated framework for quantitative analysis and decision making in finance and finance-related areas, such as asset management, real estate, corporate finance, financial regulation, and banking. Located at the top of Embassy Row in Washington, D.C., Kogod is at the heart of financial market regulation and policy. Kogod faculty continue to be published in the top Finance journals and are also engaged in extensive work with major government agencies and international institutions, such as the SEC, CFTC, Federal Reserve Bank, IMF, and the World Bank, as well as major corporations. The intensive MSF degree program provides students the opportunity to become highly skilled professionals, ready to compete, succeed, and lead in today’s rapidly-changing global finance environment.

PREREQUISITES

Prior to admission into the MSF program, the fulfillment of prerequisite coursework is required in accounting, economics, and basic statistics. Students who have not completed these may take them at Kogod in non-degree status prior to their admission into the degree program. The MSF program requires completion of 18 credit hours of core courses, and 15 credit hours of electives. CORE COURSES

»» Part-time students can complete the program in two years. »» The CFA Intensive Review course helps students prepare for the Chartered Financial Analyst Level I examination. For those that take this course, more than 70 percent pass the exam on the first try, well above the national average.

DISTINGUISHED FACULTY JIM MOSER, MSF Faculty Program Director,

Executive-in-Residence Moser recently worked as the deputy chief economist at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). While at the CFTC, he analyzed the Dodd-Frank rules restricting speculation in oil and other commodities. Previously, he was a research officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and a senior director at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Moser’s research focuses on the contribution of derivatives to the real economy; the arrangements private markets make to resolve problems arising from the use of derivatives; and the proper role of government in regulating derivatives activity. H. KENT BAKER, University Professor Baker has extensive industry experience and has provided consulting and training services to more than 100 organizations. Baker is one of the leading survey researchers in finance. He has authored several books and published more than 200 articles for publications including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Financial Management, Financial Analyst Journal, Journal of Portfolio Management, and Harvard Business Review. ROBIN LUMSDAINE, Professor

Lumsdaine is the Crown Prince of Bahrain Chair in International Finance at Kogod. She has a wealth of academic, public, and private sector experience, having held senior positions at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and Deutsche Bank, and previous faculty positions at Brown and Princeton. Her research has been published in Econometrica, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Economic Journal, the European Economic Review, and other academic journals. Lumsdaine is also a National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) Research Associate, a Center for Financial Stability (CFS) Senior Fellow, and the recipient of National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants. Her current research areas include international finance, systemic risk, central bank communications, aging and health care policy, financial literacy, and econometrics.

JEFFREY HARRIS, Professor Harris is currently the Gary D. Cohn Goldman Sachs Chair in Finance at Kogod. He has an extensive background in market microstructure and regulatory issues. Harris recently served as Chief Economist at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, with prior experience as Visiting Academic at the Nasdaq Stock Market and at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. His research appears in the Energy Journal, European Financial Management, Financial Management, the Financial Review, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Investment Management, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Futures Markets, the Review of Futures Markets and the Review of Financial Studies. MICHEL ROBE, Associate Professor Robe has written extensively on insider trading, investor protection, optimal security design, and the costs of volatility for the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the International Economic Review, as well as various other academic journals and in books. His current research deals with the organization and evolution of commodity and financial futures markets, derivatives-market microstructure, and cross-market shock transmission. He has been a Visiting and then Consulting Senior Economist with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Robe also consulted for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Robe was named Kogod Graduate Professor of the Year in 2012. ROBERT HAUSWALD, Finance Department Chair,

Associate Professor Hauswald’s research focuses on financial intermediation and regulation, corporate cooperation, financial contracting, and project and corporate finance, and has been published in the Review of Financial Studies and the Journal of Financial Economics. His teaching interests include international financial management, advanced corporate finance, financial engineering including fixed income securities, and the management of financial institutions.

YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW Kogod’s Student-Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) provides students with an opportunity for real-world experience in securities analysis and portfolio management. Currently, students oversee $470,000 in assets from a variety of positions, including analysts, fund managers, and portfolio managers. The program mimics the structure of an asset management team, similar to those at Fidelity or Vanguard.
