analogy TRANSEAT – THE MRT PUTRAJAYA LINE UNDERGROUND STATIONS BENCH DESIGN MRT Putrajaya Line MRT stations design leverage in the concept of “Serambi”, the foyer area of a Malay traditional house that serves as a space that involves integration and communication, as well as carrying daily activities in the traditional context. In our proposal, the idea of Kampungs (Malay villages) was explored upon in relation to the “Serambi” of Malay houses. The traditional Malay house itself reflects and demonstrate the socioeconomic, cultural and environmental values that lie in the way of life.

The semi-open atmosphere of the Serambi allows the talking place of daily life activities, formal events, family events that deeply involve traditional values. The Serambi ultimately give the first impression to guests upon their arrival, functioning as the welcoming reception area where social interactions take place.

Beriadah di Serambi

The “Serambi” is known as the semi-outdoor, buffer space that connects the open village setting to the inner private home areas, serving as the main area within the Malay House to cater for guests bypassing, arriving and/or visiting the Malay House.

Ruang untuk beristirehat A space for relaxation and rejuvenation Well-being is defined as “the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy, and is usually in par with the idea of an active lifestyle and sufficient rest. The benefit in encouraging the use of public transport is evident in keeping active, as getting around in public transports is a form of incidental exercise.

Interval Resting

Human resting postures - sitting, leaning

+ Range of Motions

As one of the main public hospitals in Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur, HKL symbolises a place of recovery for the people. People undergoing recovery are often advised to have more rest, which is the most basic of human recovery method. Context of Hospital Kuala Lumpur MRT Station: Hospital Kuala Lumpur is a Malaysian government-owned public hospital in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. Founded in 1870, HKL is a not-for-profit institution and serves as the flagship hospital of the Malaysian public healthcare system, as well as a tertiary and referral hospital. Nearby context from Hospital Kuala Lumpur MRT Station: 1. Hospital Kuala Lumpur

Design Ideas- Beristirehat di Serambi

Simple Range of Motions - Knee raise, Kick Back

= Bench Design

The HKL bench is designed for interval resting after prolonged walking, and this is especially important for the elderly and sick to regain energy before continuing their journey on the train or to the hospital. Design ideas are derived from the resting posture of people while maximising resting areas, and the integration of some simple range of motion such as knee raises and kicks to avoid the body from being stagnant for some time and allowing movement freedom.

Design Ideas- Beristirehat di Serambi

= Bench Design

The main design idea of MRT Raja Uda bench design is the derivation of the elements in traditional Malay houses. These include primary structural elements such as post and beam structure and the roofing structure, secondary structural elements such as floors and walls laid on slits. The varying floor levels represent the interior space hierarchy and usage. The design idea also includes the Malay House construction method of mortise and tenon joints, indicating the use of interlocking principles in traditional construction.

DESIGN IDEAS

Located along Jalan Ampang, one of the major roads in Kuala Lumpur, Ampang Park is a bustling place that houses foreign embassies and high rises. Formerly used to link two major tin mining spots - Ampang and Kuala Lumpur - for transporting tin, the connection formed by Jalan Ampang had boosted the economy and brought the emergence of a town. Tin mining first brought the Malays, the British and the Chinese to work in these mining areas. As tin mining flourished, embassies and commerce began to set along Jalan Ampang, attracting more foreign cultures and trade that eventually assimilate into the local landscape at Ampang Park area. As development progressed, the adaptation of local culture can also be seen in the building landscape at Jalan Ampang, where modernism style adapted to form postmodernism buildings, with vertical fins as sun shading devices suited for Malaysian context. Jalan Ampang can be known as the witness of Malaysia development as a progressive country. Developed area of Ampang Park

Ampang Postmodernism buildings

The Ampang Park bench design idea derived from the progressive symbolism of Jalan Ampang - from the connections of tin mining areas that lead to progress of a city, to the developing building landscape with adaptation to the local context. The assimilation and adaptation to the local context induce a melting pot of various influences that was contented to the vibrancy and diversity of our Malaysian culture.

Context

Well-being is defined as “the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy”, and is usually in par with the idea of an active lifestyle and sufficient rest. The benefit in encouraging the use of public transport is evident in keeping active, as getting around in public transports is a form of incidental exercise.

Design Ideas- Beristirehat di Serambi The HKL bench is designed for interval resting after prolonged walking, and this is especially important for the elderly and sick to regain energy before continuing their journey on the train or to the hospital. Design ideas are derived from the resting posture of people while maximising resting areas, and the integration of some simple range of motion such as knee raises and kicks to avoid the body from being stagnant for some time and allowing movement freedom.

Context Located at the periphery of Kampung Baru, MRT Raja Uda leads way to Kuala Lumpur Malay enclave with its traditional Kampung settings and Malay houses that lies within the city, resonating the history and heritage from its past as a Malay agricultural settlement.

Design Ideas- Bertradisi di Serambi The main design idea of MRT Raja Uda bench design is the derivation of the elements in traditional Malay houses.

Context

500

Design Ideas- Bermeriah di Serambi The Ampang Park bench design idea derived from the progressive symbolism of Jalan Ampang - from the connections of tin mining areas that lead to progress of a city, to the developing building landscape with adaptation to the local context. The assimilation and adaptation to the local context induce a melting pot of various influences that was contented to the vibrancy and diversity of our Malaysian culture.

Context

The term “culture indicates the values of tangible and intangible heritage that are interrelated and interwoven into peoples lives. Anyaman (Weaving) is an important Malay cultural heritage. Products of weaving are daily functional products such as tikar, bakul, and sometimes even as facades of Malay houses that showcase the artistic integration of patterns and colours into daily lives. Traditionally guests are invited to sit on tikar in the Serambi during visits, indicating its importance within the social-cultural context of Kampung. The Anyaman also symbolises the intertwining of various culture among the people that form the unique local Malaysian culture as well.

Design Ideas- Beranyam di Serambi Design ideas are derived from the following where the Anyaman process involves using individual strands of leaves (mengkuang, pandan etc), weaved together to form an item which is also an artwork by itself.
