Shown above is the overhanging structure that is located at the art library. The structure’s load path has been shown but due to the limit of this image, the base where the reaction force occurs cannot be seen properly.
This complicated structure has it’s centre point being withheld by many pieces of steel rod to ensure stability, the structure’s sides are also tied to a pole that is leaning at an angle away from the structure so as to have more resistance against being pulled into the structure and causing a cave in. This design not only helps with giving shade for sun and rain, it also allows for rain to fall to a specific area, hence able to accumulate the surrounding rain into one area
Shown in the picture is a picture of a cantilever, the huge cantilever is being upheld by the reinforced lower end. The bottom of the cantilever also has a lot of materials built under it, the span and joist of the system is what is upholding and preventing the structure from falling down.
