ZONING

SPACE USAGE

The private spaces ( master bedroom & my room) are at the end of the house. It is far away from the entrance.

The living room is used the most as it is spacious and connects it to other rooms.

ACCESS/ PROXIMITY In my room the mezzanine is the least used. All the three rooms i.e. master bedroom, my room and the guest room are well connected with the washrooms.

CLEARANCE OF FURNITURE, CIRCUATION/MOVEMENT

MOVEMENT

FORM AND SPACE

The living room connects all the rooms to all the other spaces. In the house there is alot of space for movement except in the guest room. There is little space in the room as the circulation is not proper. The maximum movement occurs in the living room as that leads to the master bed room and my room. The kitchen is the next most used space. Movement from the kitchen and the dining area is also a lot.

To check balance, space left for movement, to check clearances, and most importantly to check the size and proportion of space and furniture both the space is divided into negative space and positive space. Positive space is the space which an object occupies. Negative space is the space surrounding an object. It is important to notice, size and shape of negative spaces and the distance a negative space exists from positive spaces. This will help to obtain correctly proportioned objects.

LIGHTING Natural light is very essential in the space. There is less natural light in the house except in the living room, kitchen and the upper area of my room.

In the house most of the area specially the dining area, washroom, don't receive natural light at all. The house remains cold in the winters as no natural light.

CLEARANCE MOVEMENT FORM AND SPACE

There are six places in the house where there are problems for circulation and movement.

Sizes of room depends on the number of user and pattern of space usage, requirement.

The dining area is the first as it is a round table where there is circulation problem against the wall as there are cabinets against the wall.

The kitchen and the bathrooms are comparatively smaller than the other rooms like the bedrooms and living room as there is the least usage of the space.

In the living room there is less space between the center table and the two seater sofa. The drawer in my room cannot be opened as sofa in my room is next to it. It is hard open the drawer completely.

CASE STUDY

PATHADE HOUSE by Sunil Patel & Associates

CASE STUDY ANALYSIS

BRIEFTo analyse a residence project by an Indian architect

PROCESS• Research on an Indian architects residential project. • Analyse the space • Document the analysis

PROJECT NAME : PATHADE HOUSE LOCATION: Kolhapur, Maharashtra ARCHITECT: Sunil Patel & Associates

The colour palette has intentionally been kept within the neutral range with the beige toned shahbad stone masses being cut at horizontal intervals by stark white balconies and chajjas

With the use of Shahbad stone composed in a cuboids massing, the façade has been designed in essentially what is ‘The Vernacular Contemporary’.

Keeping this in mind the zoning was done in such a way that the house revolved around the central courtyard and at the same time this courtyard helped to cordon off the private zones from the more public function areas.

The client being a criminal lawyer had asked for proper demarcation between private and public zones, so as to entertain different kinds of guests without inconveniencing the rest of the family. Entrance

A second formal living room has been slightly offset to the side spaces are at communicating distance without any disruption staircase of the house goes around the central courtyard courtyard and subsequently the rest of the house. breakfast table acting as the only barrier between cabinets adorn the walls of the kitchen. The one and only shares a common wall with the courtyard such that it

behind the entrance lobby, in such a way that the two in the functioning of either. The main connecting so that every step has a different perspective of the An open plan kitchen adjoins the dining, with an inbuilt the two. Custom made aluminium and frosted glass bedroom that has been placed on the ground floor is completely hidden from the public areas.

The central courtyard, has large windows and even larger doors which open onto the lush landscape bring in huge amounts of light into the house, eliminating the need for any artificial lights during the daytime. Each bedroom features a spacious walk-in closet which opens onto lavishly appointed bathrooms, consistent with the furnishings provided in the rest of the house.

The courtyard as the central focus of the house is the upper level family room, as it peeps down from between the staircase railings.

The upper level houses the rest of the bedrooms which open onto lavish terraces that serve a dual purpose of allowing fresh air into the bedrooms as well as of visually extending the house.

There are two bedrooms are equally placed on both the sides with the courtyard in the middle and behind it a sitting room. This floor is totally private for the family and close relatives.

RESIDENCE DESIGN BriefTo understand the current space as per the situation and to redesign it.

ProcessUnderstand a space as per the current situation. To re- create a new residence house more efficiently. To create changes and desired qualities.

DESIGN BRIEF LIVING AREA: As one enters the house the living room is to the right hand side. The sofas are placed in a square shaped position so that there is proper movement and easy conversation. It has place for seven people and acts as a formal and informal space. There is no partition between the living and the dining area.

DINING ROOM: The dining area is connected with the living area and acts as a formal and informal space. There is a round dining table for six people which helps in better circulation.

KITCHEN: The kitchen is square shaped. There is easy access and proper movement space.

MASTER BEDROOM: The master bedroom is right opposite my room. It is the most spacious room in the house and has proper circulation. The master bathroom has a walk in closet but is a bit narrow so if one tries to open two opposite doors at the same time, the will hit each other.

GUST ROOM: The guest room is next to the dining area. There is proper space for movement. But when you open the main door to the room it sometimes tends to hit the bed as the door is on a diagonal wall.

MY ROOM: My room has a mezzanine floor to it. The lower portion has a seating area, bathroom and space for storage. The mezzanine floor consists of the sleeping area, study area and a small pooja space. The lower portion is a bit congested and does not have proper movement space. On top the movement is good.

BUBBLE DIAGRAM

FINAL ZONING As one enters on the right side is the formal living room and right opposite is the guest room. After that there is an informal living/ entertainment space to the left side and dining area to the right. The kitchen is right opposite the dining table.

Ground Floor

One the first floor there is the master bedroom, a small sitting space and a pooja room. The master bed room and sitting space overlooks a small garden. There is a division made between the pooja room and the sitting area.

LEARNING OUTCOME It is important to treat space differently as the t purpose and usage of it is different from the others. It is important to complete every step and measurement accurately. One should make different layouts for one space as it clears out more problems in the space. Softwares like AutoCAD and Sketchup give a clearer view to the house plan.
