Natural Rubber Harvesting
KONGs don’t grow on trees, but they almost do. Many folks don’t know that rubber comes from trees. Much like tapping a maple tree for its syrup, KONG trees—er, rubber trees—are tapped for this valuable resource that provides materials for things like KONGs, tires, latex gloves, and so much more.
Each tree produces its supply from seven years of age up to 30 years, giving it a long, sustainable lifespan. KONG rubber is sourced from Southeast Asia, where these trees grow naturally in the hot and humid climate. Yet, all rubber trees in the world come from a single tree in Brazil—the hevea brasiliensis.
When the rubber is harvested, bark is scraped in a spiral pattern around its trunk. The bark leaks a white liquid, raw latex, that flows down the spiral and drips from a tap like a faucet that feeds into a collection cup. It is then filtered for impurities before moving into the next phase of the process.
This is where the KONG magic starts.
Compounding Process
Did you know rubber is like pasta? A compound recipe is used to create the rubber used in our pet toys. Ingredients react and serve a purpose similar to the way ingredients react when cooking or baking. The recipe components are mixed with a very large, high-powered mixer to create the final rubber.
