Plan

Design idea:

Philosophy:

Tubular banner stretched between two circles. One at the top one at the bottom of the staircase.

Banner is an allegorical representation of a connection between heaven and earth.

Two sources of light one at the top one at the bottom illuminate the banner from within.

A column in the temple represents this concept in an architectural form. It is also a metaphor of a meditator’s way towards the absolute.

By incorporation of images and sentences from Meditatio work and events meditators from around the world may explore the essence of a community as a spiritual journey.

Design / Philosophy: Stairs accomodate a change in level and viewpoint, reinforce the path of upward movement. A column placed in the middle of the stairway allows us to explore The Centre and its spiritual tradition. This Stairway and a column is a three dimensional experience. This three dimensional quality can be exploited when we treat it as a sculpture, freestanding within a space but also conveying an important message. While the act of traversing up the stairway may convey privacy, aloofness, detachment, and focus on the way to the unknown. Going down is a step into reality with new consciousness. Walking up the stairs is an act of symbolic pilgrimage, collective or individual, towards the ABSOLUTE.

PROJECT NAME URBAN GENERATOR PROPOSAL Silvertown flyover is one of the most common features of contemporary engineering infrastructure. We would like to prove it could become transformed into a space for the people but also into a sustainable power generating site. We would like to source concrete for construction from the adjacent batching plant and other materials such as metal, wood and rubber from nearby recycling facilities. Solar panels installed on top of the flyover perfectly alinged to the south combined with kinetic energy harvesters would provide electricity for the site with the potential of exporting excess power to the grid. Our approach is to retain the character of the site and to provide opportunity for human expression. Urban Generator in social context entails education and variety of play for different age groups. It is a sustainable urban park under the roadway which will provide sport facilities, outdoor cinema and a water feature symbolising the historic connection between Victoria Dock and river Thames. It would be simplistic to focus only on the site itself and ignore the context. Therefore we believe it is necessary to look outside its boundaries. Reason is to create wider landscape framework. We believe that Urban Generator could be a starting point for creation of Industrial Heritage Park that would connect dock area to the river in the future. 6.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY CONCEPT:

EDUCATION CONCEPT:

Energy of the place through activity in space! Sun and kinetics act as sources of sustainable energy for the site.

Education in Sustainabilty + Sustainability in practice = Creation of education through play within the industrial heritage.

Our proposal would go further than the site itself and offer the potential for radical change of land use in the future. Historically The Royal Victoria Dock and The River Thames were connected. We would re-connect them again by creating a physical link carved out of the industrial zone thus re-establishing public access to the river in a form of a Industrial Heritage Park.

3. Proposed land use diagram.

Our aim is to make the site accessible by incorporation of space under the flyover into public zone surrounding The Crystal Centre and relocation of an adjacent car park.

We propose to turn the site into a vibrant place being able to generate part of its electricity sourced from the sun, car traffic and human activity in the park underneath. Also an outdoor cinema would be open to the public. We would comemorate the history of the site by re-creating a symbolic link to The River Thames.
