‘‘THRESHOLD’’ , the new city of Grado. Urban Planning and Design Studio 2015 University of Parma Department of Engineering and Architecture School of Architecture Description Grado is a city situated at the Province of Gorizia, Friuli Venezia Giulia. The particular character of its territory makes Grado an important city given its dimensions. Grado is a small piece of soil which divides two different qualities of water elements. The north prospect of Grado is on lagoon waters and the south one on sea waters. Another particularity of Grado is the fact that its main population is on 8000 people but in the summer its population can increase up to 100000 people. The reason of this phenomenon is the touristic importance of the city of Grado, which creates a noticeable distinction between the ‘‘native’’ residential buildings, areas and soil and the touristic ones. Considering the morphology of Grado’s territory our project consist of following its particularities and develop them as potentialities. It’s a proposal based on the two main strategies for the different waterfronts of the city. Taking into account the fact that in Grado the distances are relatively short, we have the chance to inforce a state of slow mobility in every part of the city, which in turn allows for the maximum perception of the local territory. Our ulterior goal is to create a common ground between the aforementioned traits and city’s culture. So our proposal consist to resolve the problems found in Grado and to inforce its abilities.

Description

Punctual spaces along the waterfront

The design thesis project starts with a general vision of the waterfront’s evolution as a subject for the urban design process. In this general survey, starts a narration of Thessalonikis urban tissue’s history, in relation with the waterfront and its principal role for the modern-contemporary city. This part is concluded with an analysis-catalogue for the projects of the second half of XX century, about the whole waterfront, which are not been constructed. In the urban analysis part we can understand the situation of the contemporary city of Thessaloniki, its potentialities, weaknesses, particularities, and in any case the quality of the existing urban space, to be able to start planning a discourse for the central part of the waterfront, so-called ‘‘the old beach’’. The main scope of this project is to set up the parameter ‘‘memory’’ as the dominant parameter for the composition of Thessaloniki’s waterfront. The project seeks to find the relationship between the public space and the parameter memory. The urban tissue of the center of Thessaloniki is formed as a grid of these memories, that refer to another important factor in the design project, that of eterotopies.

Polis, (polis->cittĂ , poli-tismos-> cultura). Design Thesis 2014 University of Trieste Faculty of Architecture Description In the region of East Macedonia in Greece we analyse a network of 4 main cities and a large number of villages which are connected between them. Considering the role of the railway in this complex of cities and villages in the region, we could understand that they could be interpratated as an unique corpus. In the centre of this complex we found the city of Drama, where the actual train station is creating an enormus urban void in the city, with a series of problematics in the existing urban tissue. However, the main scope of this project is to create a Polis of culture in a completely different scale. Polis is considered to be a centre of culture in a regional scale, considering the small distances and the form of this network of citties and villages in the region. Polis is a parallel city in an exiting one, which is functionable both itself and as a part of the urban tissue.

A project for the cultural experimentation and the educational innovation in Parma. Architectural design studio IV 2016 University of Parma Department of Engineering and Architecture School of Architecture Description The importance of a new educational center with an auditorium, a club, a gym, exhibition rooms, video consultation rooms, projection rooms, study rooms, research laboratories and administrative offices. Analysing the location respect to the urban form and the relation with the public spaces, the green spaces, the interior and the exterior. Reaffirm the relationship with other existing education and culture buildings in the city of Parma. Understand the management of the new institution with the periodic cultural activities which could take place in various parts of the building. Identify the main spatial and architectural qualities of the new cultural center, placed in a plot of approximately 5,000 square meters. The new intervention, which includes 4 floors above ground and a basement, can enclose inside, indoor or outdoor, new qualities of public spaces. Starting from the various functional requirements, different for surface requirements, accessibility conditions and privacy, the different design requirements which characterize the new intervention are divided into 16 thematic areas or function groups, with the indication of the dimensional data, according to a plurality of different urban roles assigned to the individual parts.

In site. Executive design studio 2016 University of Parma Department of Engineering and Architecture School of Architecture Description The project area is located in the historical center of Parma. In the front of Palazzo della Pilota, near the Teatro Reggio - historical symbols for the city of Parma. The design of the project starts from the functional analysis of the area, our project is characterized by an architecture intended for library, laboratories, and cultural spaces. Considering the architectural importance of the historical context, instead of reproducing architectural forms already present in the context, we decided to propose an architecture apparently ‘’ mute ‘’. Therefore, design ‘’ aggressive ‘’ architectural morphologies, ‘’ hidden ‘’ behind a almost perimetrical wall severe and almost monumental, neutral compared to the historic landscape.

de - LITH. Architectural design studio III 2013 University of Trieste Faculty of Architecture Description This project takes place in the municipality of Fogliano Redipuglia across from the largest war memorial in Italy, on Monte Sei Busi, which is dedicated to the Italian soldiers who fought to the death against Austro-Hungarian and German forces in World War I. It was built by Greppi and Castiglioni in 1938 and contains the corpses of 39.857 identified and 69.330 unidentified Italian soldiers. The architecture of the sacrarium is charateristic of the italian fascist regime and it was a means of propaganda for Benito Mussolini, who marked it as ‘’an ossuary to last and educate for centuries and millennia’’. It is worth mentioning that this structure is designed to urban scale. Its massive volume prevented the development of an urban environment around the memorial and as a result it serves Mussolini’s propagandist cause to this day.The intent of this project is to detach the memorial from its political nature and let it stand as a monument of heroism.

1. 7.

Materials and innovative technologies design studio 2016 University of Parma Department of Engineering and Architecture School of Architecture Description The architectural concept of this projects follows very basic steps to provide some composition standards applied in the specifi area of Piacenza. These basic factors, are more or less based on the needs of every private residential complex, always in relation with the ‘‘genius loci’’ of the location. These parameters are: -Build the maximum surface, according to the law. -Offer a residential quality comfort, by using architectural design tools. -Analyse the context. -Create a dialogue between the private space and the public one/internal - external.

Orasis, an urban theatre for the Varese Park in Parma. Sustainable and environmental design studio 2016 University of Parma Department of Engineering and Architecture School of Architecture Description The Orasis was conceived as a cantilever telescope, wiith a part inserted into the ground. It is characterized by a large glazed opening, positioned at the south-east of the body, which offers a panoramic view of the landscape (towards the opposite bank of the river). The building is oriented in such a way as to maximize the use of natural lighting and ventilation. In particular, the natural lighting and the air recycling are ensured by the presence of a great glazed opening to the south-east, of the two skylights on the roof, which in the summer season favor leakage of hot air. The roof consists of two slopes: on the south-east facing slope are positioned a series of solar panels that cover the energy needs of the building; while the other slope includes a roof garden, which contributes significantly to maintaining the comfort and the air quality within the environment. The roof garden also has a role to mitigate the environmental and landscaping impact.

Modernism Memorial, a funerary monument for the death of modernism. International architecture students competition 2015 Finalist Description Pilotis, and one of the first models based on the use of concrete, Dom-Ino House could describe exceedingly the principes of modernism. The prototype of Dom-Ino House itself, which introduced the free plan and pilotis and which is the base of the main mass production of housing, is a very strong element of modernism. On the other hand , modernism has a poetical side too. All things considered, this memorial in urban scale is based on these two different aspects of modernism and at the same time manages to critisize modernism itself with its approach. Technically it’s a memorial-mega structure applied on a regular-fuctionalist urban tissue. The main idea is to create complexity with simple elements. All in all using concrete columns, slabs and stairs i tried to compose a narative vertical Labyrinth.

Strongholds of Memory.

Versions of Strongholds of Memory related to urban landscapes

#ThisIsACo-op - the Greek Pavilion at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia 2016 Description One of the greatest problems Europe will face in the years to come is thought to be the refugee crisis. The main characteristic of refugee housing in the entrance countries is the “briefness”. The characteristic of this “briefness” is resolved through ‘catalogue solutions’, like containers and tents, overlooking that the issue remains that of housing. Housing is by principle architecture. Aim of our proposal, therefore, is to present an architectural solution that will both address the characteristic of “briefness” and will provide an expanded social context. Two are the ideas funding our design approach. On one hand, we suggest to “chanel people’s own building capacity” in their temporary houses. That way, we not only provide them with proper housing conditions, but we also enable them to take personal initiative in the urban tissue so as to be expressed and connected with the surrounding area. On the other hand, these areas will not vanish once the problem is ‘solved’. On the contrary, these areas will turn into strongholds of memory through memorials and landmarks. Memory, in that sense, is esential, as it can be understood in three distinctive ways: 1) the memory of what was left behind, 2) the memory of those who came and 3) the memory of those who left. These pronciples are illustrated in the grafic design. By using simple architectural moulds, we create unfinished but functionable spaces in strategic locations inside the urban tissue so as to achieve a level of interaction between the permanent and the temporary inhabitants.
