Redefining Style Worldwide So we’re finally one year old! It’s been an interesting ride it’s had its ups and downs -a bit like a rollercoaster- but it has been one that has been both enjoyable and a learning experience. Trying to figure out how to end the year was a hard task. I mean, we went back and forth on how to top our last issue and close out the year with a bang. We finally decided to cap 2009 off with a mixture of ROCK “N” ROMANCE.

tographers, models, make-up artists, hairstylists and everyone else who has had input on the magazine since the first issue. I’ve had the privilege of working with many bright new talents in all fields and I am tremendously proud to have been able to provide them with an opportunity to further develop their careers. A magazine is not about one person, but rather about the colorful and creative mix of people you are surrounded with. Words are important to a magazine, but so, of course, is design. Since the first idea of Kontrol came about we have gone through three different graphic designers. Each talented in their own right, but I would particularly like to say thank you to the Graphic Designer that has truly brought Kontrol to life, Lorenzo Turner. He has put forth so much hard work on each issue. Also, I would like to give a special thank you to our new Art Director, Allen Cooley and Publicist, Aleesha Carter. They both believed in what Kontrol could become and they have continued to help us make this magazine a success.

Fashion, for so many of us, is a way of communicating an idea about some aspect of ourselves that we’re still exploring or beginning to embrace. It can give us confidence when we’re lacking it and also message all kinds of wishes, desires, hopes, and alternative selves. So who better to give our readers a true glimpse of style and re-invention with edge and sex appeal, rock and beauty, other than Teyana Taylor, Teairra Mari & Melyssa Ford? Yes, that’s right! With this last issue we’re giving you a cup full of Hollywood with three rising beauties that embrace ROCK “N” ROMANCE to the fullest. Kontrol is giving you not one, but two high profile covers. The shoot with Teyana & Teairra Mari took place at nine o’clock at night and lasted until about four o’clock the next morning but was full of laughter and Teyana introduced everyone to her alter ego ‘Mother Diana’, lol. And then there was Melyssa’s shoot. . . Let’s just say Melyssa brought a whole new energy to Kontrol’s set. It’s my opinion that she helped us channel the essence of supermodel Gisele Bündchen and top fashion magazine Vogue.

Remember Kontrol is style redefined!

At this time, I would like to say THANK YOU to all of the writers, editors, graphic designers, pho-

Julian Lark Editor-in-Chief

I hope you enjoy reading the last issue of our fiscal year. ROCK ‘N’ ROMANCE was a lot of fun putting together and I think we have produced two spectacular covers to celebrate ---both shoot by Allen Cooley and styled by myself. This issue embodies the great style movement that Kontrol is adding to Atlanta and the world around. We’re not just an Atlanta based magazine, but a worldwide fashion and entertainment magazine for all.

October 14, 1976 - January 7, 2010 On January 7, 2010 I lost someone very near and dear to my heart. Demarcus was my friend, my brother, my business partner, my hero and so much more. As I sit here and think of all the things we did together, it breaks my heart to know that he will never get to share another moment with me. We were supposed to start Kontrol together but he became very ill before we could launch the magazine. He was there for me every step of the way in so many ways. I like to think that we still share this magazine together; that he guides me in every direction that I go from this day forward. It was once said that when someone passes away a star is born with energy so pure that it creates new worlds and as the soul releases‌ it shatters into pieces becoming free-flowing thoughts or a mental thesis. Demarcus, the day I learned you were gone I cried harder that I have ever cried before. I felt a piece of me had died with you but now I know a new star was born on that day and distant voices fill my mind, saying ‘look up in the sky’ and when I did there you were telling me it would be okay and to hold on and keep pushing. I want you and your family to know that I will always hold you in my heart and with every tear that I shed for you, it just means that I will cherish your love and the person you were more and more each day. I love you!! - Julian R. Lark

Pretty Ricky 06 02

music exclusive

They could be considered the Destiny’s Child of male R&B Groups, but Pretty Ricky has a lot more of an edge than your average boy band. They rap, they compose and they write. Pretty Ricky is a pre-packaged deal that began performing together in 1997. The Miami group made up of Diamond “Baby Blue” Smith, Spectacular Smith, Corey “Slick ‘em” Mathis and Marcus “Pleasure P.” Cooper were managed by Joe “Blue” Smith (father of brothers

Baby Blue, Spectacular and Slick ‘em). Ten years and four albums later, in midNovember, they released their first independent album, Pretty Ricky, and introduced a new member to fans, Lingerie.

07

...More sexy than the second album. That one was more lubby dubby, this album is more like that hard core having fun. “Tipsy in Dis Club” the first single off the new album debuted in July and peaked at #6 on the BET 106 & Park Countdown. It seems that the quartet hasn’t missed a beat from the charts they topped with singles like “Flossin’” and “Grind with Me,” despite the member adjustments (Pleasure P. went solo in 2008 and was replaced by Christopher “Ambition/ 4play”, who was replaced by Lingerie) and label changes (from Atlantic to Bluestar). We are not sure whether it’s their style, which Spectacular describes as Jodeci (Circa 90s) and Slick ‘em describes as “Street,” or their raw personas that keep fans coming back for more, Pretty Ricky. Their previous albums, Bluestars (2005), and Late Night Special(2007) performed no less than GOLD (Third album Eighties Babies (2008) was shelved after being leaked). The previous album successes made it quite difficult for Atlantic Records to release their hold on the group. “A major record label like Atlantic ain’t trying to let a high grossing act like Pretty Ricky go,” says Baby Blue. He says the label dragged the case on with lawyers but the group used the Pleasure P situation and the Eighties Babies leak as leverage. “We have our own studio, so the album went from us to Atlantic, so for it to get leaked after it got to Atlantic, was a problem, says Baby Blue. The successful transition from major label to independent is not easy, but Pretty Ricky ultimately came out of the deal independently on Bluestar Entertainment. (a joint venture with Atlantic Records), with a big check and all the publishing and masters from the previous records. They advise other artists to do the same. “Stop trying to make it and MAKE IT,” says Baby Blue who is president of Bluestar

08

Entertainment. “This is the independent market; you ain’t got to be trying to get with a major label no more, get out there and GET IT.” He adds that if you can’t, contact Bluestar Entertainment. The adjustments have been made after a two-year hiatus and Pretty Ricky is ready to give the loyal fans that followed them on the Scream Tour IV Concert some traditional Pretty Ricky offered on the Bluestars album. This album is, “More sexy than the second album (Late Night Special),” says Spectacular. “That one was more lubby dubby, this album is more like that hard core having fun (music).” Three versions of the album, Pretty Ricky, are available through PrettyRicky. com and other venues: Dirty (Grown & Sexy), clean (Wal-Mart-version) and Chopped & Screwed (by OG Ron C of Chopstar DJs and SwishaHouse). They are older and this record will show how wise they have become since their beginning 12 years ago. “The Bluestar album, chicks were in high school experimenting with sex,” says Spectacular. “This album, you going to enjoy every bit of the sex. This album is as sexual as it gets.” There are no collaborations, the album is entitled, Pretty Ricky, 100% of the album is written and produced by Pretty Ricky (Bluestar Records). The album is made up of true life stories and sexual episodes from the members with harmonies and music according to Pretty Ricky that is reminiscent of Keith Sweat, Jodeci and R.Kelly (12 Play). “Other artists bring in songwriters and producers, they telling another dude’s story, but we telling our story, “says Spectacular about the ready-for-TV artists of today. ...Continues on Page12

urbanbella

“The curly, kinky, wavy hair apothecary,” is the mission statement behind the revolution of natural hair for Urbanbella. Urbanbella is a retailer and salon in Atlanta, GA that personally delivers product solutions for women with curly, kinky and wavy hair textures. The Urbanbella website was born in 2004 by Keneesha Hudson and her husband/number one fan Jarrod Hudson, allowing clients to purchase hair care products as well as, read about the best products for their hair type and texture. The successful couple opened their first physical location in Atlanta, GA. in 2006. The idea for Urbanbella came about when Kenee-

sha, having relaxed hair at the time, was swimming on a regular basis, and wanted to experiment with the “curly, natural, look.” After tons of research, insight from family, and listening to her friends of all ethnicities about their hair, she decided to move forward. Urbanbella’s approach is to educate the client on the product that is right for them, and then go a step further by doing a consultation to where the client’s hair is thoroughly examined to determine products that correspond to their hair type. By requesting tons of samples from her vendors (Phyto, Miss Jes-

sie, and Jane Carter, Kinky Curly, Hair Rules, Curls, Curly Q’s, Devaconcepts, FHI, Difiaba), Keneesha was able to experiment and learn about every product before presenting the product to each of her clients. “Love and education set us aside from the rest; our salon has hands on treatment,” says Keneesha about her staff of eight. Keneesha, the eldest of three children, grew up in Decatur, Georgia where she attended a diverse high school and upon graduating, attended Emory University and Georgia State University, where she majored

in finance. “Education makes a significant difference; it shapes you”, responds Keneesha when asked if education is important to her. She also responded by saying that she always knew that she was destined for “big things”, and that it all started with art critiquing, allowing her talent to fulfill her passions. Having a strong foundation in church and the support of her parents helped Keneesha in her mission. Her mother is a very hard worker, and her father has that “stick with it” mentality. “My mother’s hair is natural and my father is a big supporter of natural beauty…so is my husband; they are behind me 100% in my business,” says Keneesha. When asked by Kontrol magazine who are her other supporters, mentors, and inspiration, Keneesha responded with a plethora of influences: • Life/Women in business • Never quit attitude • Friends/Parents • Blue Mercury Spa- Marla • Mojo; Wall Street Warriors (HD Channel) • Cathy Black; “Basic Black” (Book) Future endeavors for Urbanbella include expanding, working on two to three new locations as well as relocating their first location in the summer of 2010. When asked how will the public be notified of the move and how the public could find more on Urbanbella, Keneesha responded by saying that the company utilizes all avenues of marketing; from word of mouth, to magazines, newspapers and their company website. Urbanbella always stays ahead of the game in providing information thru one-on-one consultations and seminars as well as excellent customer service to their clients. “Our clients are 100% responsible for our success,” adds Keneesha. With this outlook on business, Urbanbella is going to be around for quite some time creating a movement in natural beauty. So hop on and ride the train of natural beauty. Next stop, loving the hair God gave you!

It would be safe to say that today most females are inspired at some point to be a model, whether in a music video, magazine, or commercial. Kontrol has had the pleasure of doing a photo shoot of and interviewing glamorous urban model, Melyssa Savannah Ford, here in Atlanta.

Ford gave us wonderful insight on her experience in this industry and how she has taking control of her own career. “I began my career in music videos, with world renowned director ‘Lil-X’…who decided to use me consistently which resulted in other directors noticing me like Chris Robinson,” states Melyssa. Many have associated the term “video vixen” to her name but she is quite proud of the title, “Video vixen can be seen as a very attractive and sexy woman, that people gravitate to her image…the negative connotation only comes in when people think about the other stuff they may have heard,” replies Melyssa. In 2008, Ford was seen on a CNN interview “Video Vixens: Too Revealing” having mentioned that many music videos have become demeaning towards woman. She stands firm by what she stated due to the changing of lyrical content by the artists which resulted in a change of the images of women. This pushed her to take control of her career by exiting that sector of the industry and enabled her to focus on other areas such as hosting and acting. Kontrol inquires about Ford’s ultimate career goals, “I guess I don’t have any ultimate goals because I feel there is nothing I cannot reach.”

Her Tips For Being in This Industry “If you embark upon a career that places you in the public eye, you have to expect that there’s going to be a certain fascination of who you are as an individual; therefore, there will be public scrutiny and you have to understand that goes with the business. You must live your life in a fine balance: without compromising who you are, but also being very careful to understand that you are seen as a role model and people follow your career. That demands a certain kind of respect in terms of your fans and your supporters. You learn to seek support from your fans who can lift you up in down times; because it is nice when people notice the hard work you have put into your career. However, I am glad to say that I’m not Tiger right now, because I know I would not be able to handle that kind of public scrutiny…I don’t know…that’s just very difficult for any human-being to handle. The best thing is having a strong support group around you, loving friends and an incredible family.” Empowering the Young Women Ford has her own foundation which is called LESS Is More. LESS, an acronym for Literacy through Education; Etiquette through Example; Strength through Perseverance; and Self through Confidence, her non-profit is geared towards helping young women of color come into their own and maintain a sense of female empowerment. “Female empowerment is a passion of mine and something we need more of.” Ford shows no plans to slow down anytime soon either, with her newest project; a co-written theatrical play entitled “For Vixens Who’ve Considered Homicide When the Video Became Too Much”. She has high hopes for the response by women of today, “I believe a lot of women will see an element of themselves played out on stage.” Her Style & Secrets Ford is no stranger to having an impeccable sense of style and persona about her. “I love being ‘the girl’, I love how I am able to play around with my personality from lady like, retro, or even a rock star,” as Ford describes her style.

You can always catch Mel’ with a mean shoe accompanied by a nice handbag. “I have a little bit of an obsession with my shoes…I might need to see someone about it”, Mel kids around. Ford also boasts about her favorite designers, Roger Rodriquez and Urbe Leche’, who both create comfortable yet sexy clothing. She doesn’t deny that she shops at local department stores like Target, Abercrombie & Fitch, GAP, and American Eagle either.“I’ve found clothing that looks amazing on me and was inexpensive. Labels don’t really mean much... yes the luxuriousness is nice but you have to become creative!” Out in Los Angeles, it’s not uncommon to see Mel’ in jeans and a tank with of course a mean shoe and handbag!Mel shares, “Always in my handbag, I carry my driver’s license, black eyeliner, minty chewing gum, a little vile of perfume, oh… and a credit card!” Ford gives Kontrol a few of her secrets to maintaining beauty and poise, “Don’t underestimate the power of exercise…it can not only help physically but also mentally. Moving out to L.A., I discovered canyon hiking and never thought it would become what it has for me…definitely one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. The physical benefits are insane! Beauty-wise, I’m an Oil of Olay girl, I have been since I was thirteen.” Ford was recently featured on BET Lifestyle Lounge, where she also went into depth about her beauty secrets and regimen. You can visit BET.com for more of her in-depth secrets. Getting Personal with Mel’ When asked to share with Kontrol readers a personal part of herself that we may not already know, she states, “I’m a diehard animal lover, I’ve had pets my entire life…love dogs, cats, snakes, anything with four legs or less! No insects! I have a phobia of insects and spiders,” she jokes. Having such a busy career, one would wonder if Mel’ has considered children and marriage. “Absolutely! I like children and I have a huge respect for the traditions of marriage; God willing I will find myself married with kids one day.”

Woodson Your Night

Shantee Tyler:Untitled

Writtten by: Jonathan Reynolds

Written by: Walter Boswell

Straight out of Boston, Massachusetts, a new reggae phenomenon has just hit the streets like a surge of energy. Kontrol was the first to have the opportunity to exclusively review his sizzling new album ‘Your Night’. He goes by the name Woodson and is already a well known urban reggae artist up North. Kicking off his new album with a club hit titled ‘Pop Pop’, you will definitely get in the mood for popping bottles. Another track off the album, ‘Good Stuff’, is also hot song for the ladies to jig to. It is sure to liven up any club scene from Atlanta to L.A. once the DJ plays it. Currently an unsigned artist, he still continues to make hit after hit. Woodson even slows it down on a track called ‘Without You’ that paints a vivid picture of a man who is lost without his girl. Woodson has been in the music industry for a while but this is just the beginning of a compelling journey for him. Setting himself apart from most artists by showcasing his great pipes and lyrical flow in a single album, ‘Your Night’ is a great blend of hip hop and reggae. It is an album that Kontrol Magazine feels should be heard and loved throughout the world. This album not only delivers, but will set the tone for any night out with your friends.

Although she was not one of the chosen members for Danity Kane, she gave her all during the show and was determined to further her music career. From singing, to songwriting, and even acting, Tyler offers a range of talent. With such a great voice, she is a natural musician. She is currently in the studio working with big name producers such as BAM and Teddy Bishop, preparing for her debut album. “I Don’t Buy Drinks” which is such a diva track, is sure to move the crowd and will be a hit in clubs everywhere. The track “Juice Box” is sure to put you in the mind of Destiny Child’s “Bug-a-Boo” or even Keri Hilson “Get Your Money Up” and also lets the fellows know that they must come with their A game to approach Ms. Tyler. She is both, a great vocalist and a great writer who gives her all to everything she does. Featured on Kontrol’s website, she sings our featured track “Kontrol” and it is not only fitting to the magazine it is also a fitting song for a young women in the music industry who are set on succeeding and not allowing anyone to stop their her movement. Keep an eye out for Shantee Tyler because she will soon be delivering a smoking hot album for all to enjoy.

You’ve been here before: frustrated and confused because no matter how many miles you run, diets you try, or supplements you take, you still can’t seem to get rid of those annoying cushions hanging over the side of your jeans, or the extra skin encasing your belly and you feel as though you are wasting your time and energy. Luckily for you, there’s a drink you can consume that helps in weight loss and the elimination of toxins and fat. That drink is water, the best drink to get wasted on, or should I say the best drink to eliminate the waste. Water is essential to a healthier you. Your body, which is mostly made up of water, depends on it to function properly. It detoxifies your system, clears your mind and skin, improves digestion, and boosts your immune system and sexual performance. All of those benefits are great, but the best one is that it aides in the loss of fat by flushing out the byproducts of fats that take storage in your body. Oftentimes, individuals mistake thirst for hunger which aides in additional calorie intake that could have been avoided. According to Weight Loss for All’s health website, it has been noted by various doctors that when your body feels hungry, you could in fact just be dehydrated and need a glass of water. ‘Well how will I know the differ-

ence?’ you ask. That’s a tough question, but the answer could be more simple than difficult. If you have just eaten a meal less than one to two hours prior to your craving, try grabbing a glass of water before you grab another plate. This prevents you from overeating, thus helping to sustain your weight. If you are like many people in America, water isn’t necessarily the beverage of choice, especially when you can just as easily grab a cola or tea instead. While it’s okay to drink decaffeinated drinks in moderation, be sure not to overdo it. A lot of the everyday beverages contain a high amount of sugar, which when stored in your body, turns to fat. Therefore, if you are not a water drinker, to adjust your palate, try drinking green teas with no added sugar, or adding fruit such as a lemon to your bottled water. You can also try Crystal Light mixers which contain little to no sugar and have little to no calories, but whatever you do, be sure to drink half of your body weight in ounces to reach a healthier you. So what are you waiting for rock star? Let’s get wasted: on water that is!

Recently Kontrol had the opportunity to catch up with Teyana Taylor at Patchwerk Studios in Atlanta, Georgia where she was working on her new album. We had a chance to find out more about her new movie Stomp the Yard 2, her lip gloss line, her unique sense of style, and we even heard a few of her new songs. She don’t care. She’s just minding her own business. Like me, I’m just minding my own business. She’s moving up and doing better and better.” Teyana tells Kontrol that she’s not a big “label head” but does support up and coming and under-rated designers. “I like Hell’s Belles, and Dime Piece, and things like that. The up and coming, the new stuff that represents me. . .Married to the Mob. That’s what I like.” Kiss by Rain was also in the top rankings of her fashion choices. “My homegirl’s name is Rain (Kiss by Rain designer) and she’s a designer who has really dope stuff. It’s so good to see young people come together and really follow their dreams. She’s been to Fashion Week and everything. She’s really passionate about it and she’s really, really working.” Teyana, whose style is so diverse, also adds, “I mean, don’t get me wrong. I still wear Jordans but you gotta know how to throw in a mean boot though”. Her ability to fashionably style herself and others is just one of the many notches in her belt of talents. When it comes to acting, don’t count out Teyana Taylor. She just wrapped up filming in Atlanta for Stomp the Yard 2, the sequel to Stomp the Yard. She plays Rena, a stand out character who she describes as the exact same as herself, “She’s a rock star, she’s very open-minded. She’s definitely outspoken. She’s stepping. She’s definitely the character that kinda brings the movie alive. She gives it a little ‘omph’!” When we asked what her favorite part of the being in the movie was she charismatically replied, “the money!” Her insight to us about the movie itself was “the cast was cute”. With a line-up including Pooch Hall, Terrance J., and Columbus Short, just to name a few, we can totally agree with her. “The main character, Lem Collins, he was really cool too. He was in Fame, he was in Prom Night. He’s such a sweetie.” Teyana said that she really enjoyed working with the cast and looks forward to working with them again. “Me, Pooch, and Terrance J. have some movies lined up. We’re about to do some stuff and it’s gonna be really, really dope.” Teyana clued us in that she will definitely be doing more acting in the near future. “Yeah, I told you the money’s great! I would just go do the movies and come back and do the album later. That movie money is great. Movies

are something that last forever. I mean, songs can last forever but then they die down. You will definitely see doing more acting.” For the meanwhile, you can expect to see her in Stomp the Yard 2, which comes out in the summer of 2010. Still a virgin, Teyana plans on keeping it that way and wants to date around before getting “wifed up” but admits to having a Hollywood crush on Shia LaBeouf. “I’m starting to get over him. I liked him for years and I still didn’t meet him yet. I must tell you. Honey, he’s so sexy. ” She also finds Lakers guard Shannon Brown to be a cutie. “Did you see Shannon Brown? Shannon Brown is from the Lakers. This is what made me like him. I always thought he was cute but he looked too much like Chris [Brown]. They’re not related but that’s the funny part about it, they look alike. I saw him in the background when Lamar Odom was doing an interview after a Christmas game and, honey, that body was everything.” She told Kontrol that she has a little crush on Shannon but declined from telling us, “who I really like”. With so much on her hands, Teyana is mainly focused on her work for now. As for her future, Teyana has great things ahead of her. “I have a lot of things coming up as far as designing for other [clothing] lines and creating collections and stuff. So, I’m pretty excited. Me and Kanye are supposed to get up so I can design for his women’s line, Pastels. We’ve been talking on the phone a lot. I helped him with a couple of ideas with his sneakers.” She is also into artist development naming Ester Dean who, might we add, has one of the top singles in the country (“Drop It Low” featuring Chris Brown) as one of her clients. “I do a lot. People assume that because they don’t see you, you’re not doing anything. I do a lot behind the scenes. That’s where the money is.” With her new album, her lip gloss line, designing for Kanye, and helping other artists to develop, Teyana Taylor is soon to be a household name so keep your eyes open you may learn a few things from this “Jill of all trades”. I call myself a Siren. I don’t know if you ever read The Art of Seduction but a Siren is somebody whose presence is romantic, sexy, you know, with very strong sexuality. I have that.” From the first word she spoke, it was clear that Teairra Mari is a humble, down-toearth diva with a great ability to connect with people. She is recording artist and actress who is going full force on her second chance at success in the music industry. She invited Kontrol to take a glimpse into her life and told us more about her new album, At That Point, and her new movie, Lottery Ticket, and she let us in on a little of her fashion secrets. She also gave us some insight on her transition from from Roc-A-Fella to Warner Brothers. We also had the chance to address the pictures of her and Bow Wow. Back for the second time around, Teairra Mari is going hard. She isn’t taking no for an answer and losing is not an option. Previously signed to Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella/ Def Jam Label, she is now signed to Warner brothers and feels more independent and educated business-wise. “At first it [the transition from Roc-A-Fella to Warner Brothers] wasn’t that easy, but now that I’m expanding my business mind it’s been very easy. It’s been a great thing for me because it taught me how to be more independent the way I handle business.” Influenced by some of the greatest to ever grace the music industry including; Sade, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Jodeci; Teairra Mari is destined for greatness. “ I also love girl groups from the sixties. I love the Supremes. I love the Three Degrees.” She continued, “Oh, and I love John Mayer too. Can’t forget him.” She is determined to come out on top with this new album. At That Point, Teairra Mari’s new album which she just finished working on will be released in the spring of this year. She tells Kontrol that she named the album At That Point because she feels like she is at the point of no return. “I’m just like I’m at a point in my life where I’m just doing this for me. Before I would feed into what people thought and what people would say. Now, I’m doing this because I love

it. If I like it I’m going to do it. I don’t care what people say. I don’t care about opinions. The people that’s close to me are all that matters. And if they love it and I love it. . .hey, who cares. . .” She also just released the first single off the album “Sponsor” and is in the process of shooting a video for the single. When asked why two singles (“No Daddy” and “Make Her Feel”) she released on her previous album while with Roc-A-Fella did not do so well she responded, “We didn’t go for ads on the singles. So they weren’t really officially singles. It had a lot to do with that label. The team behind it. The team that is pushing it.” “Sponsor” her first single with Warner Brothers has a great amount of ads behind it and is expected to do well. “We actually got a great amount of ads. Especially during the holidays. We’re in the top five. We’re in the rankings with Snoop Dogg, Li’l Wayne, Plies, and Jaheim.” With tracks produced by The Runners, Nephew, Rico Love, and Zeek, Teairra Mari is guaranteeing her fans a super-hot album. Fashion and style is such a big part of being in the music industry. Teairra Mari’s romantic style greatly reflects her as a person. “The reason I love the Kontrol shoot is because I look at myself as very romantic. I call myself a Siren. I don’t know if you ever read The Art of Seduction but a Siren is somebody whose presence is romantic, sexy, you know, with very strong sexuality. I have that.” Kontrol asked Teairra Mari to give us a glimpse into he favorite fashions and designers. “I love different things from different people. I love Gucci shoes. Louis Vuitton, when they make jeans their jeans fit amazing. Um, Dolce and Gabbana, I love their shirts. And, those are just some high end stores that I love.” She also enjoys the same designers as the girl next door. “I also like BeBe. They have some nice things such as blouses and skirts. And I also love BCBG.” Self-described as a “street hummingbird”, the Detroit native admits to

37

being a shoe girl. “I love Betsy Johnson. I have every Betsy Johnson clutch there is. And whatever else I see that I like I just grab it. I don’t care where it’s from.” Although, she has a ‘passion for fashion’ Teairra Mari says that a person’s presence and energy sets them apart more than anything else. “I think what you exude as a person takes you to the next level and sets you apart from others.” One of her future endeavors is to begin her own shoe line. “I have a shoe fetish. I’m like Carrie Bradshaw, I love shoes. So for sure I want do start my own shoe line but not so soon because I want to focus on what I am doing now.” Kontrol can’t wait to check out those shoes! For now, you can expect to see Teairra Mari on the big screen in The Lottery Ticket . The cast includes Bow Wow, Mike Epps, Ice Cube, Keith David, Terry Crews, Naturi Naughton, Loretta Devine, Brandon T. Jackson, and Charlie Murphy, just to name a few. “It’s gonna be very funny. We have a lot of comedians in the movie so it’s gonna be funny. It’s also a family film.” Teairra Mari plays a gold-digger who’s after a guy---Kevin Carson (Bow Wow)--- who once lived in the projects and whom she had no interest in until he won $370 million playing the lottery. “ The experience was great. This was the

38

first time I worked on a big budget set. A couple of years ago I filmed another movie called The Magnificent Cooley-T with Jackie Long and it was a lowbudget film. So it was a lot different. I don’t know if every big budget movie set is going to be like that but my first time was defi-

nitely a ‘cherry-popper’.” She says that she really enjoyed being a part of the cast and can’t wait for a chance to act again. “My favorite part was actually learning and just being on set. Sometimes I would go on set even if I wasn’t working just to soak up that knowledge.” She hopes to work with Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Taraji P. Henson and Jada Pinkett (who are among her favorites) in the future. The Lottery Ticket will be in theaters this summer. Kontrol had the opportunity to find out more about Tearri Mari’s off-screen relationship with her onscreen counterpart Bow Wow. Even though pictures have surfaced of the two together off-screen hanging out, she denies any romance between the two of them. “We’re actually very good friends. I wouldn’t say we’re in a relationship but we do have a friendship. It’s strictly

platonic at this present moment, but we do have a lot of fun together when we hang out. So I’ll leave it at that.” Teairra Mari says that she is currently single and likes to march to the beat of her own drum but is open to a relationship in the future. “I do date here and there but that’s about it. I’m not dating anyone right now so hopefully in the future some can lock me down.” Could that someone be Bow Wow? We’re just joking, but don’t rule it out. Teairra Mari is open to the idea of dating someone in Hollywood. “Dating someone in Hollywood is not a fear of mine. Dating someone like that I would understand them and they would understand me and my work. And the same thing with dating a regular person. I would date either or. I’m a Sagittarius so I’m very spontaneous.” From her new movie to her new album, Teairra Mari has so much to be excited about. She is grateful for a second chance to do what she loves most. “ I am just super-excited. I mean, to get a second chance, especially in this business, is just sometimes unheard of. Especially to do it again on a major label.” Prepare yourself to see more of Teairra Mari because this time, she’s here to stay.

Dating someone in Hollywood is not a fear of mine. Dating someone like that I would understand them and they would understand me and my work.

ways to

Romance a rock solid

By: Angela Mincey Love is such a beautiful thing when found with the right person. There is nothing better than feeling butterflies when you are with that special someone. From sharing your first kiss, to holding hands all the time, to spending long hours on the phone talking about nothing just to hang up and call your partner right back, new relationships are always so exciting and invigorating. You can miss a few meals, and still not be hungry. You can miss a few hours of sleep and still not be tired. If your partner asks you to wake up in the middle of the night and charter a first class flight to the moon, you would not mind because love fuels your energy. All of these emotions play a role in the “honeymoon phase of a relationship. A strong relationship cannot be built on love alone. It takes more than twinkles and butterflies to carry any relationship. What

45

about when all the excitement and infatuation starts to wear off after the honeymoon phase is over? Falling in love is just like buying a new car. When you first get it is so exciting and you feel that it is all you need to sustain. You don't mind giving someone a ride because you want to be cruising around town in your new ride anyway. A few months later, you still like your car but you are just not as infatuated as you were before and giving someone a ride up the street seems like a hindrance because you would much rather be doing something else. All things grow older with time, but that does not mean they have to grow less appealing. Relationships are like anything else in life; you must maintain them, upkeep them, and upgrade the one you have for the best results. It is said that 'average actions, yield average results' therefore if you want the best results in your relationship you must put your best foot forward. Here are five simple ways to help you go that extra mile and 'rock you romance':

1.

Take time out to communicate about one another

Communication plays an essential role in any relationship. A lot times, lack of communication is the number one cause of breakups. People have a habit of assuming they know what their partner wants, needs, how they feel, and what they think. Sure, we all know our partners for the most part but, we must also realizes that people grow and change the way they feel about certain things. When communicating with your partner ask questions and find out more about him/her. Tell them more about you. Be completely open about your feelings, interests, and ideas. That is the only way your partner will ever truly know, understand, and love you. Taking the time out on a regular, consistent basis to communicate with your partner not only gives you a chance to learn more about them but it also helps build the bond between the two of you. It helps build trust, which next to love, is the most important variable of a relationship. Trust and understanding can help elevate your romance. There is nothing better than to

46 02 16

have someone who truly understands you and who is there to listen to you, as you do the same from them. Good communication is the foundation to a strong, healthy relationship and helps to establish a romance that’s as solid as a rock.

2.

Take the time out to communicate about sex

How many times have you been in a relationship with someone you have sex with all the time but you never talk about it? We communicate about other aspects of our relationships but we never communicate about sex. Today's society makes sexual communication such a taboo topic amongst couples. Your body is your temple therefore you should be able to freely discuss what goes on with your temple. You should discuss everything from how it feels to being safe. How do you know what your partner likes if you never ask and they never tell? Find a way that is comfortable and not awkward to talk to them about what they like, their expectations, how it feels and everything in between. In the course of sexual communication and experimentation there is much you can learn about your partner to achieve optimal satisfaction and add fire to your romance.

3.

Travel Together

Every now and then we all need a vacation to clear our heads. Getting away with your partner can be one of the best vacations and also help enhance your relationship. Travel can play an important role in building a relationship. It allows you to experience new scenery and culture with your partner, which can also contribute to you discovering and rediscovering one another. There is nothing like taking advantage of a stroll on the beach or learning about ancient artifacts while with the one you love. Traveling together can give you precious memories and milestones to reminisce upon. Tasting new foods, hearing new music, experiencing new cultures together can also open door to communication about one another's

love & relationships

Each of you should be able to appreciate the warmth and intimacy of pleasing and being pleased by your partner. Intimacy is more than sex and is great factor in learning and building a rock solid romance.

likes, dislikes, preferences, backgrounds, and much more. Getting away from the everyday people also give you time to focus on and enjoy one another the way you want but may not have the time to.

4.

Devote time solely to pampering and enjoying your partner.

As the old saying goes, “you get what you give”. Every once in a while you should devote a day to pampering and catering to your partner. Do all the things that he/she likes best, cook their favorite dish, give them a body massage while you converse about different things. This should be a calm and relaxing experience for the both of you. It will show your partner that you are there to give not only to receive and will motivate them to do the same in return. This day of pampering should be a two way act. Each of you should be able to appreciate the warmth and intimacy of pleasing and being pleased by your partner. Intimacy is more than sex and is great factor in learning and building a rock solid romance. Take the time to enjoy one another with no distractions. Spend time to bond in a romantic ambiance. It will be worth all the time and effort.

5.

Enjoy time with one another doing simple things

is precious and you can never make up for when it is lost. Relationships are all about, giving, taking, and compromise. There are so many ways to spend time with the one you love and still get things done. If your partner has a hobby or interest that you are not necessarily genuinely interested in you should offer to participate or watch with them. Showing support in your partner's interests is a sign of a commitment and loyalty. Who knows, you may even find out you are more interested than you believed. It is also good to do things and go places together. There are so many places to go and things to do with your partner that we may normally take for granted. The two of you can cook together, do laundry together, and even do the dishes together. These things are simple but allow you to accomplish things and spend time with your partner as well. These are just a few things you can do to help build a rock solid romance. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give a few of these a try. Love is an essential factor in any relationship but it takes more to make it through the everyday toils of life. It takes knowing, learning, caring, and bonding with and for your partner in order to build a romance that’s as solid as a rock.

Many couples may complain that they never spend enough time together. Time
