Located in the village of Seddülbahir, the fortress is situated at the southernmost tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula, at the entrance to the strait, on the edge of the bay called Ertuğrul or Cape Helles.
Seddülbahir Fortress is a rectangular structure whose corners are supported by towers. The walls that make up the body and towers of the castle were generally built with cut and rough stones on the walls and rubble stone and white lime mortar filling in the core. Building layers can be observed from the outside because the wall sections have been destroyed and have not been interfered with over the years.
Sedd-ül-bahir, meaning the wall of the sea, is a 17th century Ottoman fortress. Its construction started in 1658 under the auspices of IV. Mehmet’s mother, Hatice Turhan Sultan. It was built to form the first line of defense against the strait attacks of the Venetians. Turhan Sultan is the first mother sultan to be a military building sponsor in Ottoman history.
Seddülbahir Fortress Re-use Project
Seddülbahir Fortress Site Plan
The fortress has been the subject of a comprehensive academic research project since 1997 and a documentation, restoration and conservation project since 2004. Restoration works started in 2015. Re-use project is one of the most important steps of the project, which was selected as a result of an invited competition opened in 2017 with the aim of refunctioning the fortress. The main intention was the revitalization of the destroyed Bab-ı Kebir and the new museum building. In addition to these, the square in front of the fortress was designed, the primary school in the square was converted into a visitors center, new functions were given to the historical spaces, and landscaping was designed.
Seddülbahir Fortress Re-use
Bab-ı Kebir
Instead of a reconstructionist restoration approach, an abstract completion proposal was developed in some parts, especially at the Bab-ı Kebir and the Domed Building. Reconstruction of a very large lost mass with similar materials would not only cause the remains to be destroyed to a large extent, but also create the possibility of mistakes in the interpretation of details for which we do not have enough information and documents. Instead, it was decided to make a contemporary revival that would make you feel the silhouette of the Bab-ı Kebir and the main wall line on which it is located.

Bab-ı Kebir 17. Century
As a result of extensive research examining the situation of the castle in different periods, the height and shape decisions to be used in the revitalization of the gate were taken. In order to show the general form of the Bab-ı Kebir, a light wooden structure was proposed that would differ from the stone walls of the castle but would not look too foreign. Thus, it was aimed not only to revive the height, monumental character and entrance function of Bab-ı Kebir, but also to make its contemporary additional quality evident. This design language, in which wooden elements are used, was also used in the completion of the crenels that disappeared in the East Tower and in the completion of the roof cover in the Domed Building.
Bab-ı Kebir Revitalization Section
Unfortunately, the dome of the Domed Building, whose main walls were in a relatively healthy condition, could not reach the present day. After the body walls were meticulously restored, the dome of the building was completed with an abstract proposal, just like in the Bab-ı Kebir structure. The dome, designed with the same character as the Bab-ı Kebir completion, can clearly express its structure from the outside and inside of the building.
The historical walking path unearthed as a result of the excavations determined the form and circulation of the new building. The visitor coming from the Bab-ı Kebir walking path goes down from the terrace level to the level where the museum and cafe are located, with the ramps. Then goes down to the lowest level where the magazines street and service volumes are located. Perceiving the fortress and its surroundings on the terrace, the visitor is informed about the historical key points on the ramp and accesses the museum part.
Seddülbahir Fortress
A new building was designed in order to provide unhindered access to the castle courtyard, to exhibit the finds unearthed in archaeological excavations under appropriate conditions, and to avoid placing service areas such as toilets, infirmaries, and technical rooms inside historical buildings.

The park in the centre of Taraklı, didn’t suit the historical site with it’s unqualified concrete walls unknown when they were added, unplanned buildings like the restaurant and the tea house constructed not accordinly to a plan. In the design process, considering the square as an ‘openness’, taking references from the historical environment and leveling the park with the existing slope played an important role. Transparency’ and ‘accessibility’ were held in the foreground in the relation of the square with surrounding roads, historic buildings and bazaar to form a common platform where visitors and locals could meet.
For this purpose, the stairs and ramps created between the park’s end elevations provided calm transitions. Foresight, it was imagined that daily social activities could be intertwined with tourist activities in these areas, so that different experiences could emerge for different users. The city park has been transformed into a square where visitors can be informed about the history of the town and the town’s residents can refresh their urban memories. The area was part of the Taraklı bazaar till the 1950s.

‘Saye’ is an international art community that embodies inspiration, expression through art and collective creation. It settled in this modest building in Tarlabaşı in order to carry out its works, which have been continuing in various places both on the sea and the land.
Within the scope of the restoration project, first analytical documentation of the building was carried out. Afterwards, researches were carried out on the original condition of the building. The building was cleared of unqualified annexes accompanied by the information gained through these studies.
Saye Collective Ground Floor Plan
The original window openings were identified and recreated. The details of the architectural elements, window and door joinery, about which information cannot be accessed, were designed in a contemporary and simple style.
The building is located in İstanbul, Beyoğlu, Tarlabaşı district, Bülbül neighborhood, at the intersection of Küçük Duvarcı Street and Mısır Buğdayı Street. The building, which was built in the begining of 1900’s with a masonry system, is accessed from three separate levels. Its original function was a house and was re-functioned as a multi-purpose cultural space with the restoration project.
With the aim of being a platform that lives with its environment and includes surroundings in its works, the garden fences were made with raw timber, which is as permeable as possible and does not isolate with its surroundings.
‘Saye’ as a production and sharing platform hosts theater, performing arts, exhibitions and various workshops from time to time. In this context, flexible spaces were created. Open and functional interior were designed as much as possible. The garden was designed as a gathering and communication space.

Orient Games Office is located in Kadıkoy, Istanbul.
The design decisions has been developed for an office that will be used by different teams of employees with flexible working hours and days. The space was built on two main functional areas, which we categorized as social space and work space.
In the organization of the space, an innovative and dynamic design developed and open plan scheme has been applied, with the references from young and diverse user profiles.
All existing walls were removed and a ‘shell’ was designed starting from the entrance and spreading throughout the space. While the social area and work area are placed on the side of the shell facing to the main façade; wet areas, technical equipment and storage areas etc. functions which need closed area are placed to the side facing the blind façade. A meeting room at the corner is bordered with a filleted glass wall.

A distinctive design was proposed for the facade of the building, which is generally used as a residence and workplace. In particular, the museum, which will be open to the public, was aimed to create a different perception from other buildings with an impressive facade design.
The museum in Fatih also functions as the center of the association that built the museum. The interior and facade designs and applications of the museum, which is located on the lower 3 floors of an apartment, were made.
Information, cloakroom, museum and workshop for children on the ground floor; seminar hall, kitchen, toilets and storage downstairs; There is an open office, meeting room, kitchen and toilets on the upper floor.
The exhibition design of the Dental Health Museum is scripted with a thematic flow and presents a wide scope ranging from the archeology of oral and dental health to modern dentistry with a compact museum story.
In the museum, where graphic design elements are used a lot, visitors are provided with personal experience with visual, tactile and digital applications instead of being just didactically informed.

Babatepe is located in approximetly 6 km northeast of Kandıra, and it is the highest point of the area between “Şile” to “Karasu”.
Akçakoca Bey ,who was born in second half of the 14th century, is one of the three most important head of raiders that extends the lands of Ottoman Empire at the begining of 15th century. Presumedly Akçakoca Bey, loyal fellow soldier of Ertuğrul Gazi and Osman Gazi, passed away at Babatepe in 1328. The mosque and the tomb that located in this place, became a center of attraction for the region. It becomes a place for the events of “Hıdırellez” and meeting point for surrounding villages.
Akçakocabey Mosque and Landscaping
Impressive location and nature of the site became a guiding light for us while working on the project which includes repairment of monument, landscape design and designing a new mosque. For the content of the project; removing all the structures and roads that surrounds the monument, integration of the monument and landscape, closing the roads to vehicle movement, designing a new mosque that more compatible with the spirit of the nature and site after demolishing the old one, and designing a observation platform that directs to the view of Blacksea, antique ports and endless forest ,were the main decisions.
The mosque is located on kiblah axis of the monument’s center, which is south. Enterence of the mosque is on monument level and comprise of ground, mezzanine, and because of the slope of topography, semi-basement floor.
Semi-Basement floor of the mosque built by masonary walls with “Kandıra” stone, with concrete base. Starting from ground floor, main body of the mosque built with chestnut tree wood, with çandı structure technique. Three layered laminated wood elements stabilize with “kurtboğazı” joints at the corners, and at the corner of the windows, stem bars stabilizes from floor to roof. Roof of the structure placed on two main trusses and roof ridge, covered with turkish style roof tiles.
Akçakocabey Mosque and Landscaping
Without any doubt, most challenging part of the project was design of the new mosque. With the literature and field stuies, discovering the construction technique of “Çandı” and synthesizing first period Ottoman religious structure typology with contemporary interpretation created our first design process.
