Artist Sean Phelps with Who's Landing COVER: Artist Sandra Berubé with Life is a Circus - Bounce BackCastlegar Sculpturewalk
Castlegar Sculpturewalk began in 2010 featuring just ten sculptures – cut to today, with twenty-nine pieces in our annual rotating program, and more than triple that number throughout the city and region, and it’s easy to see why Castlegar’s known as The Sculpture Capital of Canada™! Now in our 14th year, Sculpturewalk’s vibrant, dynamic public art program has garnered world-wide attention and captured the hearts of the community.
Castlegar’s growing downtown is Sculpturewalk’s canvas: an incredible outdoor gallery which fosters and supports our talented local artists as well as attracting talent from across the globe. Not only does our program beautify Castlegar, it provides a huge draw to regional and international visitors, making us the top-rated local attraction on TripAdvisor™.
Each sculpture along the walk is available for sale and lease, and all viewers are encouraged to vote for their favourite piece via ballot: the sculpture with the highest vote wins the People’s Choice Award which is
purchased by the City of Castlegar for their permanent collection. Combined cash prizes of $7,000 are also awarded to the top three People’s Choice placements, and the top three Artistic Merit placements (juried by professional artists and curators).
The support and vision of the City of Castlegar, local businesses, community, and of course, the artists, have enabled the Sculpturewalk to thrive, and we look forward to knocking your socks off with another year of amazing art!
Nesting
LAWRENCE CORMIER
Penticton, BC
Mild steel
Born in 1948, Lawrence Cormier resided in Regina, Saskatchewan until 1988 when a lifestyle change prompted a move to the Okanagan Valley. In 1996, he and his wife Kena settled in Penticton, where his interest in art deepened. A selftaught sculptor, his creative process is driven by the transformation of steel, a cold and rigid material, into spirited, animated works of art which communicate to all a joy of life.
Nesting depicts those fascinating raptors, ospreys. Cormier often has them feasting in his backyard, jockeying with the eagles for the best perch on the pine tree overlooking the lake.
Wings of Freedom ZEN WANG
Nelson, BC
Concrete & stainless steel
A fourth-generation sculptor originally from China, Bonningtonbased artist Zen Wang uses tools once belonging to his greatgrandfather. A polymath who is as comfortable wielding a chainsaw as he is designing on a computer, Zen holds an engineering degree, a business master's degree and a film diploma. His art has appeared in many TV shows and movies, and his documentary films have had multiple premieres in Toronto. Zen tells stories that matter for people who give a damn.
Wings of Freedom exemplifies a state of mind. Freedom cannot be given, it is earned. It cannot be taken, but is surrendered.

Nelson, BC
Bronze
A master of many mediums, from bronze and marble to snow, ice and sand, professional sculptor Denis Kleine is a BFA graduate of David Thomson University in Nelson and a former instructor at Kootenay Studio Arts, where he left a legacy for the many students who have learned from his talent and experience. Horaltic PoseCormorant
ERICK JAMES
North Saanich, BC
Powder coated mild steel
A unique mix of a biologist and artist, Saanich artist Erick James’ pieces convey the wonders of the natural world. Holding a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from UBC and an Honours Metal Certificate from the Kootenay School of the Arts, Erick has worked and studied in labs for more than 20 years and still finds wonder there – it’s this curiosity and excitement for the natural world that he brings to his art. The invisible is made visible, the often seen are re-examined.
Horaltic Pose – Cormorant beautifully calls to mind the radiation from the sun and wind from the sea.

Soaring in the Clouds
MIKHAIL PERTSEV
Vancouver, BC
Concrete
Born to a Ukrainian/Russian family of artists and musicians in middle Russia, artist Mikhail Pertsev graduated from the Stroganov Moscow State University of Applied Arts in 2006, moving to Vancouver shortly thereafter. Having sculpted for theatrical productions, TV, commercials, jewellers and even a chocolate factory, his focus remains on decorative and applied arts, now largely revolving around private commissions and teaching.
Soaring in the Clouds depicts a state where every child is a dreamer and every adult remains a child. Here, our dreams have no gravity, and everyone can soar in the clouds.
Lost in Space
TOM WATSONKimberley, BC
Stainless & mild steel, solar panel
Born and raised in the quaint town of Kimberley, Métis artist Tom Watson began welding in 2002. He enjoys exploring the boundaries of metal and how to manipulate it – his favourite materials being stainless steel, titanium, steel and copper. From iridescent seams to incorporating earthy elements like crystals and glass to further evoke emotions, he always pushes the possibilities.
Lost In Space’s glass sphere lights up the night with power gathered from the solar panel mounted in the base of the sculpture. The light shifts and moves on, a lifetime or a galaxy, there is no return.
Into the Shadowlands
LASHENORENDORFF
Winlaw, BC
Forged steel
An artist, blacksmith, sculptor, craftsperson and educator living in the Slocan Valley, Lashen Orendorff comes from a background rooted in noise, music and performance art, DIY punk, and experimental art-making. His explorations in sculpture began while studying in the Sculptural Metals program at Selkirk College in 2014. Throughout the creative process, Lashen finds himself intrigued by the materialities of steel; the texture, weight and feel beneath the hammer.
Into the Shadowlands is part of an ongoing series of forged steel masks; an exploration into themes of industrialization, hauntings, phantoms and human relationship to wasteland environments.
The Jagged Place
KARL MATTSONRolla, BC
Steel, stone, recycled objects
Living in South Peace Country in Northern BC, Karl Mattson was raised on the banks of the creek as a fifth-generation farmer. A self-taught multi-media artist, Karl’s life has been fuelled by his compulsion to create and speak through art, which has always played a central role in his life. Karl’s current explorations include large metal sculpture, and in particular, utilizing scavenged scraps and materials that surround his farm and community.
The Jagged Place depicts an iron city, landscape, dimension - another one of Mattson's testimonies to the sometimes-bleak vision of mankind's complacent march into a future of uncertainness.

His inspiration comes from his background – commercial fisherman, steel fabricator, construction worker, boat builderand his contact with nature through kayaking, sailing, skiing and hiking. He has gradually shifted mediums, moving from wood to aluminum. His work displays great purity and balance, echoing his belief that simple lines evoked by natural forms such as the human body provide the greatest freedom for our emotions and imagination. Contradiction, beautifully formed from aluminum, skilfully depicts contradicting forces in total balance.

Powell River, BC
Wood
A self-taught artist who began wood sculpting in Ontario in 1995, Conrad Sarzynick moved to BC 25 years ago, first to Vancouver, now based in Powell River. The particular characteristics of this natural material determines what is cut away and what will be kept. Also a poet, collage artist and painter, Conrad enjoys experimental vocal work.
Sprout depicts strangely familiar living forms with dynamic shapes and movements reminiscent of natural forces: birds, fish and currents of water and wind welcome multiple interpretations.
