On the West Koot Route the journey is truly the destination. The West Koot Route connects three regions: Nakusp & Arrow Lakes, Slocan Valley & Slocan Lake, and Kaslo & Kootenay Lake. In this guide you will find maps of all three regions, as well as maps of some of the towns along the way. We’ve pointed out some of the most popular hiking and walking trails along the route. There are unlimited opportunities for further exploration. For more detailed trail information stop in at one of our visitor centres or give us a call.

The Arrow Lakes Fine Arts Guild (ALFA) Art Walk is a summer-long, self-guided art tour of participating venues. Located 2km from downtown Nakusp, towards the Nakusp Hot Springs. This family owned and operated campground is opened from April until October. The campground has a wide variety of RV and tenting campsites nestled amongst trees and open areas. There is a mix of full service, partial service and non serviced spots. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit and is pet friendly (on a leash). We have shower houses and flush toilets, as well as ice and firewood for sale. There is also one cozy little cabin available that sleeps 2–4. With a kitchen and free wifi. Reservations are accepted.

Idaho Peak - a favourite in July and August for spectacular alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers. A 12 km long single-lane road takes you to a parking lot. It’s a short 2 km hike to the summit from the parking lot and the whole trip takes about four hours. It’s all worth it for the view from the summit, mountain peaks in all directions.

from Rosebery to Three Forks - a 13km section of old CPR rail line. It makes for excellent hiking & mountain biking. Hook your bike onto the small cable car that crosses Carpenter Creek at the old Alamo mine site. A hiker can get from Rosebery to New Denver in about 1.5 hours, or from New Denver to Three Forks in about 2.5 hours.

The New Denver Camp was home to over 1000 internees during the WWII years. Founded in 1892 by silver miners, New Denver is a great launch pad for outdoor activities like camping, hiking, 8th Ave fishing, biking, boating, and more. It’s also the site of the Silvery Slocan Museum, the Nikkei Internment Memorial 6th Ave Centre and the Kohan Garden. Silverton Silverton started as a mining settlement in the 1890s and became a thriving mining town. When the boom ended, Silverton’s population shrank - and currently stands at less than 200, one of BC’s smallest municipalities. In this charming lakeside village, you’ll find heritage buildings, the Outdoor Mining Museum, a campground, a boat launch, a day park for picnicking, as well as food and accomodations. Across the lake are some remote lakeside campsites in Valhalla Park.

Slocan is at the south end of Slocan Lake, where the Slocan River begins. During the 1890s, like New Denver and Silverton, Slocan was a busy mining boomtown with hotels, saloons and miners looking for wealth.

1 Fletcher Falls - A short hike down to a beach site on the west shore of Kootenay Lake. A trail above the camping area leads to a spectacular waterfall on Fletcher Creek.

2 The Wagon Road is a historic multi-use trail that is wide and easy to hike or bike. It extends from Kaslo all the way to Fish and Bear Lakes. There are future plans to expand the trail even farther.

3 Buchanan Lookout - This is a high
elevation day-use site which is located at a refurbished fire lookout building. Views are panoramic and flowers are lovely in season. There is a 2 km loop trail below the lookout with viewpoints.

4 Retallack Cedars - This short walk is a must do along the West Koot Route. The trailhead is easily accessible right off Highway 31A. This trail is a 20 min loop that takes you through an old growth cedar forest.

the Kokanee Glacier Park via forestry roads near Woodbury. Trails to the Silver Spray Cabin and Woodbury Cabin are both excellent alpine day hikes. Or book a night or two at the cabins through the Alpine Club of Canada.

6 Fry Creek - from Johnsons
Landing, follow this trail to a bridge over Fry Creek. From here you can follow the old miner’s trail farther up the canyon. Trail conditions vary. Wear proper footwear and supervise children at all times.

3 Wardner Trail - A short but steep climb to a great lookout over
Kaslo and Kootenay Lake. Access the trail off Wardner Street in upper Kaslo. You can also connect to other trails from here if you want to extend your hike.
4 True Blue Recreation Area - a multi-purpose trail network above the Kaslo airport. There are a variety of trails of varying difficulty for hiking and mountain biking.
5 Wagon Road Trail - This wide trail begins at the top of Zwicky
Road in Kaslo and follows the highway all the way to Fish and Bear Lakes. This all use trail can be accessed from a number of trailheads along the highway. See page 13.

The Kaslo River Trail - a favourite hiking spot for both locals and visitors. The Kaslo Trailblazers have created a trail system that includes two covered pedestrian bridges with spectacular views over the Kaslo River. For more detailed information pick up a copy of the Kaslo area trail map. There are multiple access points and connections to other trails too. Lakeview Trail - This easy walking trail follows the stunning shoreline all the way around town, from the Kaslo River to Kaslo Bay Park.
