Dear Readers, Welcome to the first issue of Kopf-Kino, a quarterly queer arts publication showcasing the talents of emerging image-makers worldwide. In German, Kopf-Kino literally translates to head-cinema. When used colloquially, Kopf-Kino can be defined as a mind-movie, or to see something in your mind’s eye. It often has a negative connotation, something along the lines of: ‘I cannot believe you made me visualize this terrible thing.’ We believe that the experience of looking at visual art provides a similar opportunity for your mind’s movie screen, and thus, it was clear to us that our periodical should seek to explore this singular experience. Fundamentally, we believe that the word ‘queer’ means different; that who you fuck doesn’t define you, nor does anything else. The theme of our first issue is DGAF (Don’t Give A Fuck), a topic in which we hope to visually discuss youth, gender and sexuality. We believe, as visual theorist Rudolf Arnheim wrote, “Perception of expression fulfills its spiritual mission only if we experience it in more than the resonance of our own feelings. It permits us to realize that the forces stirring in ourselves are only individual examples of the same forces acting throughout the universe.” It is our hope that Kopf-Kino will provide a vehicle by which to examine the intersection of our own experiences. Why shouldn’t you give a fuck about queer art? Because it doesn’t mean anything. Or rather any one thing. It means so many different things to the exclusion of others that like anything else described as queer it only exists through the establishment of a normal art or normal art. Is it art by queer artists? Is it art about being queer?

Queer used to be nothing more than not normal. And normal only exists since the industrial revolution created such a thing, when the Guinness Brewery hired a proto-statistician to invent a model to see what beer is normal and make a way to test if later batches were normal and could be sold. Normal was invented when mass production took hold and had to create factories that people with vaguely similar bodies could operate and make products that the largest number of people could actually use. When everything was made for a singular person for a singular purpose, normal did not matter, it did not exist, and one size fits all never crossed a mind. Now queer is used to connote gay and lesbian, initially in a derogatory way and now re-claimed to mean “we’re here, we’re queer, get used to it”-- ironically asking to be considered normal, when the word means we aren’t. So when non-normal sexuality is queer, we can’t put the brakes on after gay and lesbian, we must include sadomasochism, we must include commercial sex and intergenerational sex. Don’t give a fuck simply because you’re queer and want to support your brothers and sisters in arms. Don’t just give a wholesale fuck about “queer art,” give a fuck about art that makes you feel good, that sends a tingle to your nethers, that enrages or inspires you, art that disgusts you or turns you on, whether you’re queer or normal and regardless of whether the artist is or not.
