Welcome! Greetings and welcome to our 2014 Spring Home Season. We are very grateful that you are here tonight and we extend a warm welcome to those of you who have returned year after year, as well as those who are joining us for the first time. I want to share some great news with you. We are honored to have been entrusted with a three-year, $656,000 grant from the William Penn Foundation. This generous support will enable us to continue to serve the community in our key areas of outreach, education and home performances. In addition to supporting our efforts to expand and strengthen our mission, it includes specific support for the annual Come Together Festival which will be coming up in July, 2014. We are grateful to the foundation and humbled by their generosity and their trust in our ability to carry out our mission. Tonight, we wish to take this opportunity to reflect on the generosity accorded to us by you, our patrons, supporters and friends. As we continue to settle into our building on Rittenhouse Square, I want to remind you that the capital campaign to raise the funds needed to purchase the building is still underway. I sincerely hope that you will indicate your willingness to support this effort by completing a pledge form that can be found in the lobby at intermission, or by scanning the “donate code in this program. Your gift at any level is fully tax deductible and will help us to realize our dream of finding a space to call home. Thank you very much for joining us this evening. On behalf of the company, administrative staff and volunteers, I hope you enjoy the performance. Sincerely, Alon Koresh

Dear Friends, We are thrilled to welcome you to our 2014 Spring Home Season. It is great to be back in Philadelphia after a busy winter and spring touring season that has taken us across the country and back again. Tonight’s new work is entitled Promises I Never Meant to Keep. This is a work that has evolved through a personal reflection on change and responsibility. It’s about something treated lightly that becomes important over time. It explores the growth that occurs through life’s unpredictability, and the promises you never expected to make but find that you’ve kept in the end. One of the promises we have always meant to keep as a company is to train young dancers for a professional career. Tonight you will witness that when the Koresh Youth Ensemble takes the stage in tonight’s opening number. These talented high school students are led by Assistant Artistic Director, choreographer and company dancer Melissa Rector. Promises is also a reminder to me. We continue to keep old promises—and makes new ones—to the city that has supported us for almost a quarter of a century. We recently moved into a building in Philadelphia’s thriving Rittenhouse Square, and we are in the process of purchasing the property to house both the company and the Koresh School of Dance. In our ongoing mission to present exciting, accessible contemporary dance to wide-ranging audiences, this weekend’s activities will include a post-performance discussion after the evening performance on Saturday, May 3rd. We also invite ticket-holders to join us for a closing night celebration immediately following the performance on Sunday, May 4th. I want to thank you for being here tonight. We are very grateful for your support. I hope that this performance will inspire you to think about the promises that you have made to yourself and others over the years, and that you will come away with a renewed interest in keeping them. With warmth and peace, Roni Koresh

Ronen Koresh

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & FOUNDER

Ronen

(Roni) Koresh was born and raised in Israel and began his dance education at a young age. He trained with his mother, a folk dancer in the Yemenite tradition, and with a local Tel Aviv folk dance group. Two of his earliest teachers in Israel were Alida Gera and Micha Deri. At 17, he moved on to more comprehensive study with Nira Paz and Moshe Romano and then became a member of Martha Graham’s Batsheva 2 Dance Company. In 1983, following a three-year enlistment in the Israeli army, Roni immigrated to the United States to pursue a career in dance beyond Israel. He trained with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and, in 1984, began performing with Shimon Braun’s acclaimed Waves Jazz Dance Company in Philadelphia. Roni was one of the original Evening Magazine Dancers and won a People’s Choice Award as Philadelphia’s Most Outstanding Jazz Dancer. Roni is a multi-year recipient of fellowships from the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Companies that have commissioned his work include Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Giordano Dance Chicago, GroundWorks Dance Theatre, Las Vegas Contemporary, Odyssey Dance Theatre, Spectrum Dance Theater, the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, and Dance Celebration: a co-presentation of Dance Affiliates and Penn Presents. Roni’s capacity for movement creation and his ability to transform a dancer’s physique have made him a sought-after teacher. He has been on the faculty at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia since 1986. He teaches master classes and creates choreography on students throughout the country and has participated in festivals including Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and the Northwest National Dance Project. In 1993, he opened the Koresh School of Dance, where he teaches classes and intensive workshops. Roni formed Koresh Dance Company in 1991. The company quickly established an international reputation for highly technical and emotionally charged work. Since forming the company, Roni has created a vast repertoire of over 40 works and continues to create two to three new works each year. The company tours extensively both nationally and internationally, performing Roni’s work and the work of guest choreographers. An avid collaborator, Roni is an integral member of the local arts community, often initiating interdisciplinary projects with other Philadelphia artists. As Roni creates and develops new work, he continues to be an artistic resource and leading force in the Philadelphia community.

Koresh Dance Company & School About Koresh Dance Company Koresh Dance Company was founded in Philadelphia in 1991, and is widely recognized for its superb technique and emotionally-compelling appeal. It presents bi-annual home seasons as the resident dance company of the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, and has toured in over 38 states and 7 countries. The company’s interdisciplinary foundation promotes high-speed attack and gestural diversity drawn from Graham technique, Luigi jazz, classical ballet, hip hop and Israeli folk dance. Guest choreographers including Donald Byrd (Spectrum Dance Theater), Ohad Naharin (Batsheva Dance Company), Robert Battle (Battleworks/Alvin Ailey), Itzik Galili (Galili Dance) and Paul Selwyn Norton have produced works for the company. The company currently consists of dancers Shannon Bramham, Fang-Ju Chou Gant, Joseph Cotler, Jessica Daley, Micah Geyer, Krista Montrone, Kevan Sullivan, Robert Tyler, Asya Zlatina, and Melissa Rector, who also serves as the Company’s Assistant Artistic Director. About the Koresh School of Dance, Outreach and Community Development The Koresh School of Dance, established in 1993, welcomes over 20,000 students every year to classes at all levels and for all ages. In 2013, Koresh Dance Company reaffirmed its commitment to Philadelphia by moving into the old Rittenhouse Square Fitness Club in the heart of Center City. There, the school extends dance education and performance resources to its community by presenting emerging artists in bi-monthly Koresh Artist Showcases and providing professional training and performance opportunities to the exceptional dancers of the Koresh Youth Ensemble. In 2013, Koresh launched the now annual Come Together Festival, which in its first year presented 27 companies in 11 performances over 9 days. Koresh Dance Company is committed to community-building and outreach. While on tour, the company provides postperformance discussions, residencies, open rehearsals, lecture demonstrations, master classes and video discussions to its audiences. At home, Koresh Kids Dance brings arts education to economically underserved elementary-school students by partnering with Philadelphia public schools to provide free weekly dance classes, promoting children’s creativity as a conduit for non-violence and Shannon Bramham life goals. THE KORESH CAMPAIGN FOR A H OME IN MOVEMENT: A $50,000 CHALLENGE In August 2013, we moved to a new location at 2002 Rittenhouse to enable us to expand our world-renowned program and attract dancers from across the country and around the globe. This move has resulted in many positive changes including: • • •

Expanded dance class schedules for adults and children Development of a 60-seat black box theatre Increased showcase opportunities for emerging dance companies

Through generous donations we have received since our move, we have been able to work on bringing a crumbling, poorly maintained building back to its original glory as a landmark in our historic Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. We now turn to you for your help in getting us to the finish line.
