Kori Halstead ART 130 - Fall 2020 St. Norbert College

Engaging with a real person for this project made me want to spend a lot more time on my project than I normally would. However, being that the pace was so fast and I needed to be finished in a shorter amount of time, I couldn’t allow for that. But as a result, I was pushed to think faster about how to design or what to add to my prototype, and I’m thinking it probably would have looked similar to the one I would have made if I had more time. Also, having that other person to give me feedback is something that I wouldn’t have had if I did this by myself, so in the end, this prototype would probably look better than if I had done it without another person’s feedback. This exercise has helped to teach me more about embracing unfinished work and uncomfortability within my own creativity.

Gestalt is using different characteristics to describe one’s perception of a certain thing, which in this case is dot/line art. It shows

how even the slightest movement, change in size, color, proximity to something else, etc. of a dot or line can completely change how the piece is read or perceived.

I don’t believe it is very difficult for me to make a “well-crafted” object as long as I have the time and patience for doing so. I would rather take as much time as I’d like to get the small details right more than having imperfections in a

rushed piece of art. However, I think there is a certain beauty and lesson in having a certain amount of time to complete something. You learn to accept the imperfections while also honing your skills in creativity under pressure.

This project helped me to widen my understanding of abstraction a lot more. I’ve learned that you don’t have to piece together a bunch of

different things in order to portray an abstract message; even the simplest things as dots and lines can do that and more.

At times it was kind of difficult to represent some of my ideas without illustrating them, mostly because I felt I had

limited ideas of how I would represent one of my words. Ultimately, I decided that I would put forth one

of my ideas as simply and abstractly as I could and let the audience fill in the rest with their imaginations.

Depending on what sort of idea I want to portray in my future designs, I will probably use some aspect of gestalt and abstraction in

order to get that idea across to the audience. In some designs, simplicity might work best with certain characteristics of

gestalt; in others, more complex abstraction will do better with other characteristics. It is really all about how you want your piece to be read.

When working with letterforms this way, I learned how different modifications may work in some instances and not so well in others. Depending on the length of the word, the meaning, as well as how you want to illustrate it, you really have to mess around with ideas and get creative to find new and more interesting ways to get the content across that you want.

If I were to continue working with these letters, I might experiment more with physical objects and the photocopier in order to see what more I could do to illustrate the meaning of my word.

I learned a lot about the different aspects of the bald eagle, not even just its shape and characteristics, but how it moves and how it should and shouldn’t be portrayed to an audience. I learned that the cliche perceptions of bald eagles are not the only ways they should be perceived.

The most challenging media for me was the geometric iterations. The bald eagle is so complex with its feathers and the way its eyes and beak make it so distinct from other birds. It was hard to simplify those characteristics while still trying to maintain the bald eagle nature.

The most enjoyable media was one of my master artist iterations: Kathe

Kollick. Carving out the details of the bald eagle, inking it up, and seeing the

finished picture on paper was probably one of the most satisfying things in the world.

Using Photoshop was kind of hard for me at first, trying to figure out what I needed to do with certain tools. I definitely felt like an old person trying to figure out a new technology. :) But once I got the hang of it, the more enjoyable it was and the more I wanted to use it in the future for upcoming projects or for fun photo editing.

I think I’d like to find more ways to express the freedom and tenacity the eagle has if I were to continue with this animal throughout the next year. This would include different angles of the eagle and putting different contexts in the background to really bring that individuality forward.

If I’m going to be honest, it wasn’t as challenging to be limited to only type as I thought it was going to be. I think this limit really gave me a sense of what I could do with the text and how creative I could really be with it.

There were so many different ways I could use the text to get my point across that it was more challenging to pick only one iteration to use.

In order to create visual hierarchy in my piece, I mostly used a bigger scale and a higher opacity or density of the phrase I wanted to stand out more than other texts I had. I also used diagonal orientations of the texts, which I believe also helps the hierarchy move the eyes the way I want them to.

It's a rigght.

the visual hierarchy of the piece as well as how to use inverse text as a way to capture that attention as well. These skills and ideas are something that I want to continue to use in future works of mine.

The designer I chose for my presentation was Stefan Sagmeister. What really drew me to his work was that he didn’t really hold back when it came to expressing his personality, humor, and interests in his designs. He has a very satirical style of humor that he incorporates into a lot of his designs, and I personally love that he keeps his originality and doesn’t try to follow trends in order to make his designs considered popular.

Although I wasn’t able to physically present to my classmates due to having quarantine, there were still nerves in recording myself and posting it for everyone else to watch. However, I think I kind of preferred to record it anyway, as it gave me more of a chance to get everything right that I wanted to.

Also because of quarantining, I wasn’t able to watch my classmates present as well. However, when researching which designer to choose for my own presentation, another artist that I would be interested in researching further would be April Greiman. Her designs are very colorful and collage-like, which I thought would be fun to research in order to see what her inspirations are like.

If I were guaranteed it would support me financially, I would want to make, direct, and edit films and movies of my own. There’s just something

about the way you can use design and imagination to create different kinds of effects in a moving picture and have it look so real. Personally, I’ve always been a huge

movie buff, but I hadn’t realized until about four or five months ago how much I am actually drawn to the behind-thescenes aspect of filmmaking.

degree in. It was, in fact, art. It was an interesting concept to me at first, because I hadn’t taken an art class since I was in seventh grade. However, after I thought about it for a while, I realized how much an art degree fits my personality and interests. I now believe that I am truly called to creative work, not only as my career, but also as a part of my everyday life.

Originally, I felt I was expected to go into music, because I was good at it. It was something that I had worked so hard on throughout middle and high school that it was just something everyone thought I would go into. After my first year in college, I realized that music wasn’t what I wanted to pursue a
