Three for Thailand Korina Dove trades her editor’s desk for a mission school in Chiang Mai

She's worked for daily and weekly newspapers in Oklahoma and Kansas for nearly two decades. Korina Dove knows her way around Cherokee and Alfalfa County. She knows Karen Hawkins is the mayor of Cherokee. She went to high school with District 1 County Commissioner Doug Murrow. She's in a comfort zone. But not much longer. In less than eight weeks – Jan. 6, 2012, to be exact – this graduate of Cherokee High School, who holds a degree in Mass Communications from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva – will trade her comfortable surroundings to begin a new adventure in, of all places, Thailand. But despite a reputation for "blooming where she's planted," the thought of moving herself and her two daughters – Jaynee, 9, and Justine, 8 – to another country for six months to a year left her questioning what she terms a "calling from God." This was not an overnight revelation. It began about five years ago while Dove was living in Medford and attending the First Christian Church there. She had attended the Friends Church in Cherokee until the fourth grade and then got involved with Cherokee's First Christian Church, "but I'd gotten away from the church after high school. My son (then 14-year-old Joseph) helped get me back in church at age 33. I asked to help with the church's youth group and eventually became a youth leader. I was latSee THREE Page 3

A Cherokee Main Street tradition sprouted last year and will grow on Saturday, Nov. 5, with this year’s Turnip Festival. Official events kick off at 10 a.m. with a Turnip Decorating and Carving Contest on 2nd Street, just north of the former National Guard Armory building. Cherokee Rotarians will host the event. Alfalfa Electric Cooperative will start Turnip Car Races at 11 a.m. in the same location. Registration for the event starts at 10:30 a.m. Turnip car kits are $1 each. ‘Going to be no more talk of Latimer Road’ By KORINA DOVE Messenger & Republican Staff Carole Grover welcomed her Latimer (Byron) Road neighbors Jonny and Becky Guffy in joining her at Monday’s Alfalfa County commission meeting, but the Guffys did not reciprocate congeniality in quite the same way. “I’m glad to see my neighbors here, that we can agree to disagree, that we can talk and not put up signs,” Grover said to the Guffys during her fifth visit to the courthouse to protest the 55 mile per hour speed limit along seven miles of the county road on which she resides. After speaking publicly two times to District 1 Commissioner Doug Murrow, Grover was granted her wish in partiality three weeks ago: Murrow lowered the speed limit to 45 miles per hour for a mile and a half of the road, the section which runs past Grover’s house.
Bank hosts taco pile on for Pantry Farmers Exchange Bank hopes residents will “pile on” donations during an upcoming fundraiser to support the local Food Pantry. “We felt led to help the community out,” said Meghan McMahan, public relations representative from Farmers Exchange Bank in Cherokee. He then put up flashing lights on top of the speed limit signs, at Grover’s request, the following week, but that did not satisfy Grover’s request. “The signs and lights – that don’t work – haven’t worked at all (in reducing speeding trucks),” Grover said. “They do work at night.” She said she feels her requests are “falling on deaf ears” even after she brought backup to last week’s meeting in the form of Kory Littlefield, a local farmer who often hauls large loads of hay down the road. “Kory is a commercial pilot that came home to farm,” Grover said. “(He) says he doesn’t know why, but he did.” Grover cited several recent accidents in the area, including one on Latimer Road in which no one was injured. Cherokee’s blood drive Thursday at Fairgrounds Cherokee will host a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Alfalfa County Fairgrounds. Each donor will receive a free health screening and a Bedlam OU or OSU donor T-shirt. One lucky donor this fall will win a pair of tickets to the 2011 Bedlam football game. All healthy Oklahomans 16 and older are encouraged to give blood. Of those eligible to donate blood in the U.S., less than 10 percent actually donate each year. Someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds. The process of donation takes only about an hour. Tips for casting ballot in T’lake school bond vote HELENA – Turn out for the Tuesday, Nov. 8, $925,000 Timberlake School District bond election may or may not be significant – depending upon on which side of the issue voters land – but Alfalfa County Election Board Secretary Kelly Stein offered tips this week on how the electorate can make their votes count. Registered Timberlake school patrons will be asked to decide the fate of two bond proposals. Proposition No. 1 asks for $690,000 for building improvements – including a new roof on the high school, new lighting for the football and baseball fields, new seating in the basketball arena, a cooling system for the school's greenhouse and new doors for the high school. Also on the board of education's wish list is a small utility tractor for maintenance purposes, new seating and curtains in the auditorium, and security cameras for the high school. Proposition No. 2 would use $235,000 to purchase a 65-passenger activity bus, a smaller activity bus, a Suburban and a new pickup for the vo-ag department. Proposition No. 1 would be payable semi-annually and due within 10 years, while Proposition No. 2 would be payable semi-annually and due within five years. BACK TO STEIN'S TIPS Stein said that a valid marking – a filled-in arrow – is shown on posters at the polling place and inside the voting booths. If voters make mistakes marking their ballots, she said they should not try to correct their error. Instead, voters should return the spoiled ballots to precinct officials, who will destroy them and issue a new ballot. Voters whose names are not found in the precinct's registry, or a voter who disagrees with the information shown in the registry, may be asked to cast a
provisional ballot. A provisional ballot is sealed in a special envelope and counted after election day if the voter's information can be verified by the Election Board. Stein said that voters who want to get through the voting line quickly should vote at mid-morning or mid-afternoon, because those usually are the two slowest periods for voting during the day. "Anyone who is eligible and in line at the polling place at 7
p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 8) will be entitled to vote,” she added. IF YOU BECOME INCAPACITATED Registered voters who become physically incapacitated after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, won’t have to miss the Timberlake bond election, explained Stein. She said state law permits registered voters who will be unable to go to the polls because they became incapacitated after 5 p.m. Nov. 2 to vote on an emergency basis.
Physical incapacitation includes a variety of conditions – injury, illness, childbirth – that prevent a person from voting in person at the polls on election day, Stein said. "If you think that you or someone you know fits into this category, contact the Election Board office at (580) 596-2718 as soon as possible for more information," she said. Her plea is not to slow down traffic everywhere – just by her home. “I’m not asking the world – just that seven-mile area,” Grover said. “If I have offended you people (the Guffys), I apologize. We’re neighbors. I don’t want to fuss with you people. I just can’t understand why 10 miles per hour is so much to ask.” Becky Guffy stood, and in a written statement, explained why 10 miles per hour was too much to ask. She also told Grover she owed her husband and Murrow an apology. She said she placed a sign along Latimer Road protesting a 45 mile per hour speed limit to show her support of keeping the speed limit as it was. In an earlier meeting, Grover accused Murrow of paying constituents to place the sign there. “Mr. Murrow did not know the sign was posted nor did he pay me to post it,” Guffy said. She also reprimanded Grover for referring to her husband as “that trucker” in a prior meeting and implying that he was driving so fast a load of hay caught fire. Her husband, she said, just happened to be driving behind the truck hauling the hay when it caught fire and called for help when he recognized the pending danger of the situation. She added that she and her husband also live on Latimer Road, and they understand what it is like to live along the road, unlike those who Grover brought to the meeting. “The county commissioners are not in the business of law enforcement,” Guffy said. She thanked Murrow for his efforts and the time the commissioners allowed her to speak during the meeting. Guffy ended her comments by saying the commissioners have come up with a “logical compromise to make all constituents happy. The matter has been considered and voted on and should now be a closed issue.” Murrow said the issue has been solved to the best of his

Grand, Cherokee ability. “It’s really time for it to end,” he said. “After this meeting, there’s going to be no more talk of Latimer Road.” The remainder of the road will remain at 55 miles per hour. “I have no intention of changing the rest of the road to 45 miles per hour,” he said. “I put up lights. You say they don’t work, but they do work.” Murrow said the lights are not visible during the day, but he will work on finding lights that are visible during the day, and he also will continue to work on safety issues in the area. Commissioner Chad Roach supported Murrow in his decision but said each commissioner should consider safety issues. “It’s your road. In the end it’s
going to be your call and your resolution,” Roach said. “It’s up to us as a board to start contacting oil companies. (We can) take a stance on safety issues.” OTHER BUSINESS Commissioners signed a resolution to lift a countywide burn ban. The ban was unofficially dropped last week, but passing and signing the resolution made the action official. The document will be sent to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. Also approved was the $4,200 purchase of new office furniture, including a new table, chairs and desk, for the commissioners’ office. Roach reluctantly approved the permits for Crescent because the company owes the county $7,000 for previous permit approvals. “Being they have issued checks for these, I will go ahead and approve them,” Roach said. “I mean, our roads are getting destroyed. I have a little issue with them not being able to pay their bills.” Commission Secretary Phoebe Angle said the company submitted a check for $8,000 to pay for the permits approved during Monday’s meeting.

During the summer of 2008, Joseph, who is musically inclined, went on tour with a singing group from Dallas Christian College. When the group performed in Medford, the supervisor spoke. "In the middle of his sermon he said 'There is no greater calling than ministering for the Lord.' It was something any minister would say, but it just reached out and grabbed me by the heart. "That's when I knew God was calling me to do more with the talents he had given me. That's when I started looking for a way to combine my love for community journalism with ministry." Dove said she thought about how she could accomplish the merger between her profession and her faith many times over the next few years, but without much success. Then, while surfing the Internet a few months ago, she ran across the "Youth With a Mission" training school in Thailand. While it tweaked her interest, the thought of attending a mission school in a faraway country seemed improbable. "I thought, 'Boy, this sounds exactly like what I've been looking for... but in Thailand?' I'm perfectly happy with my job (at the Messenger & Republican) and just being here (in Cherokee). "Then, several weeks ago, I found the school on the Inter-
net again. It just kept coming up over and over again. I kept thinking about it; praying about it. I said to myself, 'God, what are you telling me I'm supposed to do?’" She conferred with Dr. Ron Hansen, her minister at Cherokee's First Christian Church, who urged her to accept the calling. "I told him (Dr. Hansen) I didn't particularly want to go to Thailand," said Dove. He advised her to visit with former Driftwood Christian Church Pastor David Atzenweiler. She had accompanied a group from her Medford church and the Driftwood church to Arizona on an Indian Christian school mission in March 2010. Atzenweiler directed her to look more at the 800 Youth With a Mission training centers located around the world. "I checked out mission schools in South Africa, one in Perth, Australia and even one in Hawaii," Dove said. "But something about the Thailand school kept calling me to go there. "Dr. Ron and Pastor Dave both said I probably wouldn't be able to explain it until I got there." The decision was made, she applied for the school and gave her notice at the Messenger & Republican just in case she was accepted. It was a formality. She received her acceptance letter and began the first phase of her journey – raising $14,000 to pay for the first six months of the
school. The money will cover everything from the transportation of Dove and her children to Thailand, room and board, insurance, vaccinations and school supplies. It's all broken down in a chart that she shows to those interested in helping her with her expenses. Whether or not Dove enrolls in a second training school called the "School of Frontier Media" – which runs from June through December 2012 and carries an additional expense of about $10,000 – hinges on several factors. "I'll base my decision on finances and whether or not I feel I need to continue on," she said. "After the first six months, you become eligible to become a full time missionary. It's something I'm considering, but I won't know until I'm finished with the program." As might be expected, some have questioned her decision to take her children to Thailand. "I would never leave them behind," she said. "I’m certainly not the first person to take her children on mission. They will attend school at The Learning Center (the mission's education center for children of those attending the training). "That was one of the first things I checked on. There will be about 12 to 15 kids in the school, which is a home school setting. It put my mind at ease a lot." Are Jaynee and Justine ready for the lifestyle change?
"They're so excited," said Dove. "The first things Jaynee asked were 'Do we get to eat with chopsticks?' and 'Do we get to learn Chinese?'" Assuming the funds can be raised, Dove plans to fly to Arizona with her daughters on Dec. 18 and spend a couple of weeks with her mother. On Jan. 1, she will fly to South Korea and then on to Thailand. Chiang Mai is located in northern Thailand, bordering Burma and Laos. That portion of the country has been in the news for several weeks because of record flooding. "It's the middle of the monsoon season, but I've been in close contact with the school and the flooding in Chiang Mai is going down," explained Dove. "It was the worst monsoon season in years, but the (mission) housing did not flood." On Saturday, Dove will hold a garage sale not just to raise funds, but also to dispose of possessions that can't be taken to Thailand or stored locally. "I'm calling it 'Everything Goes for Thailand,’" she said. "We will reduce our lives to about five cardboard boxes. We have to get rid of nearly everything we own. However, I am keeping the kids' baby books and photos." Finally, not all agree income tax should go – From the Tulsa World Some prominent business-development leaders finally have come right out and said what needed to be said: that eliminating or cutting the state income tax won't guarantee a rosy future for the state. The income tax has been a GOP target for some years now, and the party has managed to get several incremental income-tax reductions enacted in the last decade. The result has been, according to some analysts, a deeper economic crisis in recent years than would have occurred were those cuts not enacted. Nevertheless, there continue to be calls for further income-tax reductions and even outright elimination of that tax source. Speaking to a legislative task force, former House Speaker Chris Benge and former state Treasurer Scott Meacham, as well as Ardmore economic-development specialist Wes Stucky, raised some points often overlooked in the zeal to get rid of the tax. "Competitiveness hinges on many factors," said Benge, now with the Tulsa Metro Chamber. "Overall tax structure is just one of them." Benge also pointed out, as have many others, that any action involving the income tax should be revenueneutral, because that source provides about half of the state's operating revenue. But imagine trying to replace that lost revenue in this anti-tax climate. What other tax source would be hiked to cover any losses from income-tax cuts? That's not going to happen. GOP leaders continue to insist that revenue losses can be made up through savings and waste-cutting, and the economic growth that supposedly would result from income-tax cuts. But that's probably not going to happen either, as Meacham pointed out. "There is a perception that if you eliminate the tax on individual income it will increase activity, but that is not necessarily the case," said Meacham, now a State Chamber director. Stucky told lawmakers what business leaders already know: that other factors besides income taxes are more important to the business sector. "If a company is looking to build a branch factory, it's going to be more concerned with property taxes than income taxes," he said. "I can't say that having no income tax is going to make a big difference," he added. "What you have to have is excellence." Can we not get over this puerile fixation to be like Texas - which has no income tax but plenty of other high taxes and fees – and concentrate on our own strengths and weaknesses in an effort to make Oklahoma a better place?

Where’s the beef... I mean turnips? And the housing? It’s hard to remember a time when there weren’t enough turnips. Or, when anyone cared there weren’t enough turnips. Now we care! Apparently, the hot dry summer hasn’t made for a bumper crop of the vegetable and Cherokee Main Street Program Manager Susie Koontz is desperately looking for turnips for the 2nd Annual Turnip Festival scheduled for Nov. 5. There should be enough smaller turnips around for the festival’s cooking contest, but it would be nice to locate larger specimens for the turnip guns, the decorated turnips and the Turnip Derby races. So... if you’ve got any spare turnips, give Susie a call at (580) 596-6111. – ftc – It’s been a long time since I’ve seen so much traffic in Cherokee and Alfalfa County. Trucks – I mean those big bruisers – are cruising up and down county roads. Dirt roads are taking a beating and our paved roads aren’t faring much better. Not complaining, mind you. Not yet, anyway. I agree with Cherokee city commissioners who think the town needs to regulate where mobile homes are located – along with how many can be placed on different-sized lots. I would much prefer – if a housing project isn’t forthcoming – that someone build a mobile home park and bring about some order to the housing shortage solution. – ftc – Unless and until the oil and gas boom brings whole families to town – not just oil field workers – we can’t expect much growth in the community’s retail merchandising market. It’s great the motel, restaurants and convenience stores are enjoying booming business, but it would be nice to experience the opening of a few retail businesses. That kind of growth is fueled by families. Which brings us right back to housing – or the lack of it – and what can be done to alleviate the problem. The natural solution would be for a local entrepreneur – or a group of local leaders – to step forward and begin construction of a moderately-priced housing addition. Freedom West – the organization that works to renovate homes in Cherokee and Alfalfa County – can help in a limited way. But a spokesperson for the organization appeared before the Cherokee City Commission months ago to report that they are stymied by the fact nearly the entire city is included in a flood plain zone, which requires the purchase of expensive insurance right off the bat. At that time, it was suggested the city needed to ask for a new FEMA survey to determine if the construction of the new bridge over Cottonwood Canyon and the resulting drainage work might change the city’s status. That project needs to be moved to the top of the city’s priority list!

Viola Azbill Celebration of life service for Viola Azbill, 92, was at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at First Christian Church in Cherokee. Dr. Ron Hansen and Chaplain Gary Miller officiated. Burial was in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements were by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee. Memories may be shared at www.lanmanmemorials.com. Lula Viola Wynetta Crow Azbill was born July 9, 1919 southwest of Cherokee, the daughter of Dewey William and Daisy Florence Curtis Crow and passed from this life Oct. 18, 2011, at her home in Cherokee. She graduated from Cherokee High School in 1939. Viola and Elmo Azbill were married Oct. 14, 1941 in Cherokee. She lived in Fairview from 1942 to 1945 where she candled eggs with Eric Smith while Elmo was in the service. Viola was baptized into the Cherokee First Christian Church Nov. 2, 1935 by Ron Keller and was a member of the church for 76 years. As a young woman, Viola worked in the church teaching Sunday school classes, helping with Bible School and working with the babies. She was a member of Mr. and Mrs. Sunday School

Viola had worked at the Library, the laundry, the jewelry store, the Dairy Mart, at the Swimming Pool in the summer and worked at the Elementary School for twenty-five years. Viola loved those school children and worked with lots of teachers and superintendents. She was an ex POW wife, a member of Royal Neighbors for over 50 years and the Jolly One Club. Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Azbill; parents, Dewey Crow and Daisy Crow; three brothers, James Crow, Dewey Merle Crow and Lawrence Crow. Larry Dean Merrill SALINA – A memorial service for Larry Dean Merrill was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Cherokee. Reverend Tom Cooksey officiated. He was born April 26, 1944 to Odis and Flossie (Brewer) Merrill in Cherokee and died in Salina Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011.
From 1968 to 1969 Larry served in the U.S. Army Company C, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, in Vietnam, participating in Operations “Jeb Stuart III” and “Cheyenne Sabre,” earning the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, and Air Medal. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Lee Merrill; six children, Myron Merrill of Fairview, Laurie Gwinn of Helena, Alana Merrill of Calera, Heidi Simpson of Stillwater, Jon Merrill of Langley and Dylan Peetoom of Salina; three stepchildren, Sherri Peetoom, Barry Peetoom and James Labrue of Salina; two brothers, Bob Merrill of Moore and Hiram Merrill of Enid; two sisters, Delorse Arnold of Enid and Gracie Haskins of Thibodaux, La.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Panthers score on last play to edge Chiefs, 28-22 By STEVE BOOHER Messenger & Republican Staff Cherokee's road to the Class B playoffs hit a speed bump last Friday when the Chiefs dropped a last second 28-22 decision at home to the Pond Creek-Hunter Panthers in a key District B-1 contest. The detour to post-season play now forces Coach Bryce Schanbacher's defending Class B state champions to win on the road to determine their playoff future. "We're third in the district right now," explained Schanbacher, "but if Garber can find a way to beat Pond Creek-Hunter (this Friday) and we win out, it would put us in second place (and eligible to host a first round playoff game)." Cherokee and Seiling would be tied under those circumstances. The Chiefs have a win over the Wildcats and in case of a tie would get the nod in the standings. COMEBACK TRY FALLS SHORT It appeared Cherokee might be able to force an overtime and find a way to win in overtime last week when freshman Tanner Bowman took a handoff from quarterback Austin Hawkins on a reverse. Bowman pulled up and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Derek Richmond to tie the score at 22-all with just 3:59 left on the clock in the fourth quarter. Pond Creek-Hunter had other ideas. The Panthers drove 70 yards on the 12th play of that march. Quarterback Zach Rayner bulled into the end zone on second and inches with no time left on the game clock. The game-winning TD didn't come without some controversy. It took game officials several seconds to signal the score. Schanbacher was overheard asking the referee why the delay. "We wanted a second look," said the official. Had the touchdown not been called, the contest would have gone into overtime. FIRST QUARTER FIREWORKS The game began with offensive fireworks when the Panthers drove for a touchdown on their first possession. Rayner picked up the touchdown on a

On the Chiefs' second play from scrimmage, quarterback Henry Washington broke free and scampered 60 yards for a touchdown. Hawkins ran in the extra points and the contest was tied at 8-8 heading into the second quarter. A 15-yard run by halfback Trenton Grimes put Pond Creek-Hunter back on top, 148, in the second quarter. Pond Creek-Hunter stretched its lead to 22-8 midway through the third quarter when the Panthers put together a 10-play, 47-yard drive that concluded with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Rayner to Grimes. Rayner passed to Brady Krittenbrink for the conversion points. Cherokee's comeback attempt began late in the third quarter from the Chiefs' own 30-yard line. It started with a 12-yard run by Josh Argraves, who car-
ried seven straight times. Eleven plays into the drive, Washington ripped off a 35-yard run to the Pond Creek 1-yard line. He scored on the next play and than slipped into the end zone for two extra points to cut the Panthers' lead to 22-16 with 8:27 left in the game. CHS DEFENSE HOLDS It looked like Pond CreekHunter made a coaching blunder on the Panthers' next possession. Starting from its own 23 following the Cherokee kickoff, Pond Creek-Hunter gained nine yards and faced a fourth and one from its own 32. Linebacker Landon Schanbacher shot through the line of scrimmage on fourth down and tackled Krittenbrink for a twoyard loss, giving the Chiefs the ball on Pond Creek's 31. Argraves ran for 11 yards and Cherokee gained another 10 yards on a Pond Creek penalty to give the Chiefs a first down
at the Panthers' 10. Washington scored what appeared to be the tieing touchdown on the next play, but the Chiefs were flagged for holding. Two running plays moved Cherokee to the Pond Creek 12 yard line, but Washington was forced off the field by an injury. Hawkins was inserted into the lineup at quarterback and Bowman at halfback. Hawkins took the snap, handed off to Bowman, who then threw to Richmond for the TD, knotting the game at 22-all. The conversion run failed. "NOT THE END OF ROAD" Following Pond CreekHunter's game-winning drive, Schanbacher addressed his disappointed ball club at midfield. "When we watch the film of this game, we're going to be asking a lot of what ifs," said the Cherokee mentor. "But this is not the end of the road. "We have to win our next two
games to get to the playoffs. And you have to get to the playoffs to win a Gold Ball. You seniors need to get everybody's minds where they need to be." On Monday, Schanbacher confirmed what the players, fans and coaches knew after last week's game – the matchup with the Panthers was a physical one. "They did a good job of finding ways to move the ball and keep it out of our hands," said the Cherokee coach. "We couldn't get into a rhythm until almost the fourth quarter. "I was proud of the way the guys found a way to get back in it when we were down 22-8. "It's a game of inches and they gained a few more inches than we did. We've got to find a way to put this one behind us and go on." Schanbacher doesn't look for much of a drop off in competition this week at Merritt. The Oilers are 2-5 in district play and 3-5 overall. "Their record isn't impressive," he said, "but you have to consider the teams they've been beaten by. "They're pretty good. They've got good size, including a 6-2, 240-pound fullback who can move. MAKE OR BREAK FOR CHIEFS? "This is kind of a make or break game for us right now. We've got to hook it up and go down there and take care of business." Schanbacher said he didn't anticipate any significant changes to the Chiefs' offense or defense. "I need to do a better job of
utilizing our speed," he said. "We'll also work more on our passing game because I feel like we should probably be throwing the ball a little more than we have been." DCLA converts fourth downs to trip Timberlake, 26-6 By STEVE BOOHER Messenger & Republican Staff HELENA – Class C's No. 1-ranked Deer Creek-Lamont may have made a statement here last Friday with a 26-6 win over the No. 2-ranked Timberlake Tigers, but it was not an overwhelming proclamation, despite the three-touchdown margin on the scoreboard. It took three fourth down conversions by the Eagles on their first touchdown drive to finally get into the Timberlake end zone. "Overall, they were eight of 10 on fourth down conversions," said Timberlake Coach Brian Severin. "I told the boys they (DCLA) always seemed to have themselves in position to do that by being in short yardage situations. "But like I told them, you can't take anything away from DCLA. They came in here and did what they had to do. They're a good ball club." It was on one of those fourth downs – a fourth and seven from the Tigers' 19-yard line – that DCLA quarterback Lawson Thompson hit Landon Tingley with a touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead with 11:14 left in the second quarter. Midway through that same second quarter, after Timberlake set up shop at the DCLA 37 following a strong punt return, it appeared the Tigers might be about to tie up the contest. Tiger quarterback Coy Troutt picked up nine yards to the Eagles' 28. Running back Logan Campbell then bulled his way for a five-yard gain and a first down at the DCLA 23-yard line. But Timberlake's offense stalled after two runs gained only a couple of yards and an incomplete pass put the Tigers a third and eight situation at the Eagles' 21. An incomplete fourth down pass ended Timberlake's scoring threat. With time winding down in the first half, the Eagles led only 6-0 until Connor Kirby scored on a 1-yard run to put DCLA up 12-0.

The senior had 23 tackles in the contest and even drew the attention of DCLA Coach David Zachary following the game. "I was pleased with Logan's play and even Coach Zachary commented on it after the game," said Severin. While the loss knocks Tim-
berlake from the ranks of the unbeaten, it leaves the Tigers in second place in District C-3. Unless Timberlake has a total collapse, the Tigers should have an opportunity to go on the road, with their final two contests, and earn a first round playoff game. This Friday, the Tigers make the relatively short road trip to Medford to do battle with the Cardinals. "It's going to be a tough game," Severin explained. Hickman edged out in House Speaker bid OKLAHOMA CITY â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A bid by Cherokee native and District 58 State House member Jeff Hickman to become the next Speaker-designate for the 54th Oklahoma Legislature proved unsuccessful during a Republican caucus meeting Monday at the Capitol. Hickman, R-Fairview, is the current House Speaker Pro-Tem and was joined in the race by Reps. T.W. Shannon, R-Lawton, and Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City. Shannon was elected and should Republicans maintain their majority in the House following next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s election cycle, will be next in line to serve as Speaker of the House beginning in November 2012, when current House Speaker Kris Steele leaves office due to term limits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The three candidates who made themselves available to fill this position are fine public servants and are to be commended for their enthusiastic desire to be leaders in Oklahomaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effort to grow as a state,â&#x20AC;? said Steele. Shannon, 33, has served in
the Legislature since 2006, representing House District 62. Shannon previously served as a congressional staffer for U.S. Reps. J.C. Watts and Tom Cole.
CHS academic team wins four at Burlington BURLINGTON â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Cherokee High School academic team members traveled to Burlington Oct. 11 for the second conference triad of the season with Aline-Cleo and Burlington. Cherokee won all four games, ending the evening with an overall conference win-loss record of 7-1. Cherokee defeated Aline-Cleo, 160-30 and 160-80, and beat Burlington, 140-120 and 220-80. High scorers were Connor McGee with 100 points and Josh Argraves with 80 points. Freshman Tanner Bowman followed closely behind with 70 points.
