Toddlers Diet Guide
HOW, WHEN & WHAT TO EAT?
A HELP GUIDE FOR YOUR TODDLERS “Anvi makes me run around the house at mealtime. “Manu is not growing well and he appears quite thin and weak compared to boys of his age. These are the complaints that we hear from most Indian toddler’s parents. According to CDC, kids between the age of 1- 3 years are considered toddlers. It is a stage of rapid physical and intellectual development that prepares the children for their future achievement. WHO and UNICEF jointly developed a global strategy for infant and young feeding in 2003 considering the impact of feeding practices on the nutritional status, growth, and development, health, and survival in children. IYCF (Infant and Young Child Feeding) guidelines suggest that children should receive food from 4 or more of the following 7 food groups. ENSURE OUR DIETARY DIVERSITY: 1) Grains, roots, and tubers 2) Legumes and nuts 3) Dairy products
8 | Issue 8 | Jul-Aug 2021 | The Ancient Ayurveda
4) Flesh foods (meats, fish, and poultry) 5) Vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables 7) Other fruits and vegetables
When the child turns one year old, you can give him anything except spicy, salty, and deep-fried foods. The toddler has very little stomach capacity so he can't take three big meals a day like an adult, so typically he needs 6 small interesting meals a day to
Toddlers Diet Guide fulfill his body's energy requirements. Feeding the toddler in small intervals makes them healthy and less cranky compared to kids who are fed with more time gaps. At the age of 1 year, a child will learn to eat on his own the same food as the rest of the family. Having his own cute plate with attractive food will help the child learn to feed himself. At first, give him the food he likes and give him plenty of time to eat. He will be messy and slow at first so help the child that he gets most of the food in his mouth. Sit with the child while eating and praise him for eating. Make sure the child is hungry at mealtime and not just had a snack. If he refuses the food don't force or pressurize him to eat, the more you struggle with your child over his eating preference the more determined he will be to defy you, and don't be tempted to give him junk food instead. Toddlers always like to feed themselves so whenever possible offer your child finger food such as breadstick, vegetable stick, chopped fruit instead of food that requires a fork and spoon to eat so that we can avoid injuries. Toddlers have different nutritional requirements from older children and adults. They are naturally active and are experiencing rapid growth so they need more energy and nutrients. Children of this age need to drink regularly throughout the day to stay well hydrated and prevent constipation. Exposure to a range of fruit and vegetables in toddlerhood has been associated with acceptance of these foods at later ages. As adults, every toddler is different and will have different nutritional requirements. A large active toddler is different as he needs higher energy requirements than a small less active child. Both these toddlers will usually be able to regulate their food but the larger child will generally need more to eat. The amount a healthy toddler eats will naturally increase as he grows and his appetite increases. ALWAYS REMEMBER THESE POINTS WHILE MAKING FOOD FOR A TODDLER 1. LOCAL FOOD – Due to marked geographic variations in India, it is important to consider local food preferences availability and affordability. It will be always best if we prefer locally grown vegetables and fruits.
2. EASILY DIGESTIBLE FOOD - Food should be homemade, less expensive, and easily digestible. Commercial food must be avoided due to cost and potential risk of harmful additives or high salt content. 3. ENERGY-DENSE - To account for small stomach size, meals can be made energy dense by adding sugar or jaggery and ghee or butter or oil. Energy value may also be enhanced by using fermented sprouts or toasted grains for the preparation of meals. 4. CULTURALLY AND CULINARY ACCEPTABLE - Non-vegetarian foods are rich in proteins though vegetarian food is equally good if used in combination with cereals and pulses. Example: Khichdi. Liking of a baby is equally important as some babies prefer spicy food while others like sweets. AT ONE YEAR OF AGE At this age, the child will get all the nutrition from proteins, fruits, and vegetables, bread and grains, and dairy. The child will start to crawl and walk and be much more active. They will eat smaller amounts at a time but eat more often, so always carry some snacks for them. Kids of one year of age should drink whole milk which will provide the dietary fat they need for normal growth and brain development. If he dislikes a new food, try giving it again later. It takes several tries for children to adopt new food. AT 2 TO 3 YEARS OF AGE When the child turns 2, the child's diet should be moderately low in fat; a high-fat diet can lead to obesity in childhood. Children should eat a variety of food from each of the food groups: bread and grains, proteins, fruit and vegetable, and dairy products. Children also need plenty of calcium to support bone growth so include low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese, cooked greens, and fish in the diet. Depending on their age, size, and activity level toddlers need about 1000-1400 calories a day. Toddlers should have 700mg of calcium and 600IU of vitamin D a day. This calcium level is met if kids have 2 servings of dairy food every day. The Ancient Ayurveda | Jul-Aug 2021 | Issue 8

Toddlers Diet Guide per day is 3 servings from any of the following: 1. 1 glass of full-fat milk 2. 1 carton of yogurt 3. One piece of cheese 4. 2 cheese slice 5. Small bowl of milk pudding The approximate dairy product quantity recommended in toddlers is 500ml
FOOD PYRAMID
A food pyramid is a graphic representation of a balanced diet that grossly recommends the frequency and quantity of various food groups that can be given to children.
EAT SPARINGLY-SWEETS, FAT, AND OIL The top shelf of the food pyramid such as Fats and oils, sweets like chocolate, biscuit, and cake should not be a part of your child's daily diet. Filling up on food from this shelf spoils the child’s appetite. More nutritious food, sugary food, and drinks are also not good for your child’s teeth. The approximate quantity recommended in toddlers for sweet is 15-30 grams and fats and oil is 25-35gm. EAT MODERATELY-MEAT, FISH, AND EGG The second shelf of the food pyramid consists of meat, fish, and alternatives that provide protein for growth and development, the recommended servings per day is 2 small servings from any of the following: 1. Small pork/lamb chop 2. 2 slices roasted or boiled meat 3. 2 slices of chicken 4. Medium fillet of fish 5. 2 eggs 6. 6 tbsp of baked bean, peas, lentils The approximate quantity recommended in toddlers for meat, fish & egg is 50 gram EAT ADEQUATELY MILK, CHEESE, AND YOGURT The third shelf of the food pyramid consists of milk, cheese, and yogurt which provide calcium for healthy bones and teeth, the recommended servings

The Praakaara Yogas
SPECIAL FORMULATIONS IN AYURVEDA FOR CHILD HEALTH: THE PRAAKAARA YOGAS
Children are considered as the crucial part of the society and their health is the foundation of all growth and development. The term “health” includes more than the physical growth. It covers their cognitive development, social and emotional growth and mental health. All these developments start right from the gestation period; from the very first day of fertilization. Diet and regimens of a pregnant woman has an inevitable role in determining the health of a progeny. This may be reason why Acharyas gave prime importance to Garbhini paricharya (Regimes should be followed during gestation). The growth and de-
velopment of the fetus in each month is well narrated in the classics (Maasanumasika garbha vrddhi) and the herbal formulation that must be taken during each month has been clearly documented along with that. When we analyze such combinations, we can understand that these dravyas are very essential for the nourishment of a growing fetus. Ex- milk, ghee, butter (overall growth and nutrition),Yashtimadhu (Brain development) etc. After the birth, different lehana/prasana yogas are mentioned in the classics. These are also helpful for enhancing the digestion and immunity in infants.
The Ancient Ayurveda | Jul-Aug 2021 | Issue 8

The Praakaara Yogas Arogyakalpadruma, a regional textbook in Kerala dealing with Baalarogachikitsa written by Kaikulangara Ramavarrior explains a number of formulations which are beneficial in the child health. These formulations are commonly termed as Praakaara yogas. “Aakhyaatha bahavo ragadoshavaishamyahethavah| Praakaarayogaihi praageva paalayedheva vaa sisum ||” (Arogyakalpadruma, 35/1)
The word “Praakaara” means protecting walls/fence. As the name denotes, these formulations protects the child from various diseases and enhance their physical and biological barriers to counteract with the external environment. For a baby, everything in the universe is new and they have to struggle a lot in these unfamiliar circumstances. Praakaara yogas help them to thrive! The concept of giving Praakaara yogas can further be extended to the level of Balam in Ayurveda. Balam is again of three types. Sahajam, Kaalajam and Yukthikrtham. Sahaja bala is nothing but the innate
14 | Issue 8 | Jul-Aug 2021 | The Ancient Ayurveda
quality of body to prevent diseases which is mainly inherited from the parents. Yukthikrtha and Kaalaja bala can be considered as the acquired immunity, in which Yukthikrtha bala acquired from our food, medicines and regimens (Aahaara cheshttayogajam). For example: Rasayana prayogas. Kaalaja type of balam is acquired from the seasonal changes (Rtu) and age factors (Vaya). Praakaara yogas are examples of such type of bala in which medicines are giving according to their age.
Which age groups are benefitted? Praakaara yogas are administered right from the jaatamaatra (Newborn) up to 12 years old. Mode of administration Praasana (Applying the medicines on the tongue) is the unique way of Praakaara yogas. The drug combinations detailed are as per the age of the child. It is advisable to consume each formulation along with a suitable adjuvant, for seven consecutive days in a dose varying with corresponding age.
Which are the herbs? • Jaatamaatra (Immediately after birth): Application of Tripaadi (Desmodium triflorum) swarasa along with vacha (Acorus calamus) three drops in the bregma (central part of head)for seven days. This will help in increasing the digestive fire, protect from baalagrhas and maintain the healthy status of vaatadi doshas. • Pakshaateetha (15 days after birth):Amalaki swarasa bhaavitha bilwa(Aegle marmelos) bilwa done purification in amla swarasa can be administered for seven days. • Maasajaatha (One-month-old): Ghee prepared out of adding powders of Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Vidanga (Embelia ribes), Hindu (Asafoetida) along with brahmi (Baccopa monnerie) swarasa is administered for seven days. This may help in pacifying the krmiroga(worm infestations), enhance the digestive fire and helpful for anulomana(for easy passage of stool). • Traimaasika (Three-month-old): Combination of trikatu (Piper, dried ginger and pepper) and Saariba (Hemidesmus indicus) adding butter for seven days. • Shanmaasika (Six-month-old): Powder of musali (Curculigo orchioides) and trikatu along with honey for seven days. • Like wise up to 12 years it is explained. Common herbs in Prakaara yogas and its benefits are listed below, • Musta (Cyperus rotundus) - Deepana, Paachana, Grahi, Jwaratisarahara • Vidanga (Embelia ribes) - Krmihara, Deepana, Shoolahara • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) - Tridoshahara, Rasayana, Bala varnakrith, Medhya, Kshayapaha • Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) - Medhya, Rasayana, Balya, Grahi, Deepana, Tridoshahara • Shankhupushpi(Convolvulus pluriclaulis) Medhya, Rakshoghna, Svarya • Jeerakam (Cuminum cyminum) - Deepana, Pachana, Grahi • Indrayava (Seeds of Holarrhena antidysenterica) - Tridoshaghna, Grahi, Deepana, Jwaratisaraghnam
CLICK GYANI BABA TO GO BACK "INSIDE"
The Praakaara Yogas • Vacha (Acorus calamus) - Medhya, Lekhaniya, Deepana-paachana, Swasahara On analyzing the karma performed by the herbs in Praakaara yogas, one can understand that the dravya are performing in an all system nourishing way such as, • Promoting gut health (Deepana, Paachana, Grahi) • Act as vermifuge (Krimihara) • Help in the brain development (Medhya) • Enhance acquired immunity. (Krimihara, Balya, Rakshoghna) • Overall growth and nutrition. (Balya, Rasayana) Research studies in Praakaara yogas Vachadhatryadi avaleha prepared by using the most repeated drugs in Praakaara yoga, having immune modulator activity, were subjected to experimental and clinical trial in 1999. In the clinical study, the drug significantly enhanced antibody formation and moderately suppressed the immunological oedema. Another two studies were also done to assess the efficacy of Praakaara yoga in 2012 and 2013. The drug was administered in 3rd and 6th month in the first study and in the 2nd study it was administered in 11½ years old children. Both the studies showed significant results when compared to the control group. (Chandran S, et al., Unique contributions of Keraleeya Ayurveda in pediatric health care, J Ayurveda Integr Med (2018), https://doi.org/10.1016/j. jaim.2017.10.008) Need of the hour In the present scenario, children need special attention in their development and growth since they are the vulnerable part of our society. Covid-19 pandemic is creating havoc among the parents regarding the health of their children and Praakaara yogas are indeed a solution for all such dilemmas which will be helpful for physical, mental and social well-being.

COMMON SKIN DISORDERS OF CHILDREN
16 | Issue 8 | Jul-Aug 2021 | The Ancient Ayurveda
Children Skin Disorders Skin is the largest organ in the human body, constituting about 16% of total body weight. It has various functions like protection, thermoregulation, immunologic response, secretion of waste and sensation. Skin disorders in children may cause anxiety to parents. General practitioners should be familiar with the common skin problems as immediate pediatric dermatology consultation may not be possible. In addition to wide variety of skin disorders in childhood, skin is a marker of underlying systemic diseases and hereditary syndrome. Infections, infestations and dermatitis are the most prevalent diseases among Indian children. Skin diseases of children should be managed by consulting a dermatologist or pediatrician. Common Skin problems in children can be briefly divided as bacterial, viral, fungal infection and other infestations. BACTERIAL INFECTION OF SKIN 1. Impetigo Impetigo is the most frequently encountered bacterial skin infection, which is caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It occurs in two clinical forms, the non-bullous impetigo or impetigo contagiosa and bullous impetigo. Lesions are highly contagious and can spread rapidly by direct contact, through a family, nursery, or class. The condition is more common in children with atopic dermatitis, in those living in tropical climates, and in conditions of overcrowding and poor hygiene. Nasal carriage of organisms may predispose to recurrent infection in an individual. It occurs in two clinical forms, the non-bullous impetigo or impetigo contagiosa and bullous impetigo. Although impetigo contagiosa occurs on any part of body surface, the exposed parts especially, face and the extremities are frequently affected. It evolves from small vesicles that rapidly rupture to form the typical honey colored crusted plaques with surrounding redness. Impetigo can be spread through close contact or by sharing things like towels and toys. Scratching can spread it to other parts of the body.
Home remedies for mild conditions In mild conditions, it can be treated with some home remedies, whereas severe conditions need medical attention of an expert dermatologist. • Maintain personal hygiene -clean clothing and toys and other baby products in warm water. • Honey act as an antibiotic, apply it directly to the wound or infected area. It can help to kill off the bacteria and aid in the healing process • Wash the affected area with water boiled in Neem leaf. • Apply pure aloe vera gel which counter itching and dryness in impetigo • Grapefruit seed is available in liquid extract or tincture form. Dilute it with water and then apply the mixture topically to impetigo sores • Tea tree oil can be applied externally. • Apply turmeric paste directly to impetigo sores, it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory property. 2. Scabies Scabies is a common infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei . It is transmitted by direct contact or by fomites (things used by babies like cloths, toys etc). Untreated, these microscopic mites can live on your skin for months. They reproduce on the surface of your skin and then burrow into it and lay eggs. This causes an itchy, red rash to form on the skin. The clinical manifestations usually develop 3 week after the primary infestation. The earliest symptom of scabies is nocturnal pruritus (night itch), which The Ancient Ayurveda | Jul-Aug 2021 | Issue 8

Children Skin Disorders may manifest as extreme irritability in infants. Face, palms and soles are particularly affected in younger children, while waists, wrists, ankles, interdigital spaces, penis and areola are commonly affected in older children. Pediculosis Capitis (Head Lice) Head lice usually affect children between 3 and 12 year. It spreads through direct head to head contact. Itching in the posterior scalp is the primary symptom and there may be redness, papules, excoriated lesions and secondary bacterial infections. Occipital and cervical lymphadenopathies are frequently present. Diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of nits or lice in the scalp and hair.
Treatment • Removal of nits from hair and eyelashes • Cleaning yourself and any personal belongings that may be contaminated. Wash infested bedding, clothing and towels with hot, soapy water. • Deworming (krimighna chikitsa) • Wash the affected areas with water boiled with curry leaves, Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) • Apply the neem seed paste over the affected area for few minutes • Viral Warts VIRAL INFECTIONS Warts Verrucae are common viral infections caused by Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV). dyloma acuminata are the four major types of warts. Verruca vulgaris (common warts), occur predominantly on the hands, fingers, around the fingernails or toenail, and sometimes on the lips and nostrils. The lesions are skin to flesh colored rough surfaced papules. It may occur as single or multiple lesions. Warts may be itchy and scratching may lead to linear array of lesions, indicative of auto-inoculation. Most resolve by itself in due time, but over-thecounter preparations are available to accelerate resolution. Treatment include topical salycilic acid, cryotherapy etc. self treatment should be avoided in case of inflammation and other painful warts. Ayurveda describes warts as Charmakeela, painless elevated skin eruptions, which is either black or white in color. It can be treated with cauterization and removed by sharp instrument.
Molluscum Contagiosum Molluscum contagiosum is a poxvirus infection, common in school aged children. It presents as multiple asymptomatic, flesh colored or pearly white papules with central umbilication. Sometimes the lesions are inflammatory, indicating the impending spontaneous resolution due to host immune response. Face, neck, axillae, trunk and extremities are the common sites of involvement. Many treatments for molluscum contagiosum have been reported, including physical destruction or manual extru-
Children Skin Disorders sion of the lesions, cryotherapy, and curettage. Treatments are painful, and there is limited evidence that they are more effective than watchful waiting. In Ayurveda the disease Ajagallika is included under Kshudra Rogas. The features of Mollusca can be correlated with Ajagallika. It is mentioned as childhood disorder with eruptions arising from kapha , Vata, which are unctuous,of the same colour as of skin, nodular, painless and resembling mudga(green gram) in size. Unripe stage should be treated with applying leeches (jalukavacharanam) and then coated with the paste of yavakshāra, sukti, and saurāstri FUNGAL INFECTIONS (Tinea)
Ringworm Ringworm of the body (Tinea corporis) is a rash caused by a fungal infection. It's usually a red, itchy, circular rash with clearer skin in the middle. Ringworm gets its name because of its appearance. No worm is involved. Ringworm of the body is related to athlete's foot (Tinea pedis), jock itch (Tinea cruris) and ringworm of the scalp (Tinea capitis). Ringworm often spreads by direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal. Mild ringworm often responds to antifungal medications that you apply to your skin. For more-severe infections, you may need to consult a dermatologist. Which children are at risk for ringworm? • Children may be at risk for ringworm if they: • Are malnourished • Have poor hygiene • Live in a warm and humid climate • Have contact with other children or pets
• •
that have ringworm Have weak immune systems because of illness or medicines Use shared bathrooms or locker rooms
Home remedies for fungal infections • Clean the affected area with soap and water twice daily • Apple cider vinegar has antifungal properties. You could mix two tablespoons in warm water and drink it up or dip a cotton ball in it and dab over your skin. Doing this thrice a day should produce beneficial results. • Tea tree oil is naturally antifungal and antibacterial. Mix it with any carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil and dab over the infected area about three to four times a day. • Coconut oil works as a potent antifungal agent. Applying it over the skin makes it a good, safe topical medicine. Since it is easy on the skin, it is also useful to treat scalp ringworm • Neem leaves have effective antifungal properties and is extremely good for the skin. Washing the infected area with neem water helps in treating fungal infections You can also follow certain precautions to prevent or treat fungal infections like: • Always wear clean clothes. • Avoid using harsh detergents to clean clothes. • Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight. Prefer breathable cotton clothes. • Avoid scratching the affected area as it can worsen the infection and also increase the chances of spreading. • Wash the affected area at least 2 to 3 times a day. • Keep the affected area as dry as possible. When to visit a doctor for fungal infections? • Even after following home remedies, there is no improvement. • The fungal infection worsens or recurs. • The infection starts spreading. • Fungal infection is accompanied by fever or discharge of pus The Ancient Ayurveda | Jul-Aug 2021 | Issue 8

In the infantile phase, the dermatitis usually begins on the face and then may spread to trunk. The affected infants will be irritable or scratching due to intense pruritus. It is characterized by symmetrical erythematous papules, vesicles, edema, oozing and crusting. The extensor aspect of the extremities is affected around 8 month of age when they start crawling. Infantile atopic dermatitis usually spares the diaper area and groin. In the childhood phase, the lesions become chronic and thickened over the flexural areas. In the face, around mouth and eyes may also show chronic dermatitis and thickening of skin. How to keep skin healthy • Drink 2 litres of water daily • Keep skin hydrated by applying moisturizing cream. • Eat a healthy diet -A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. • Maintain personal hygiene. Wear clean dresses made from good quality fabric. • Avoid strong soaps. Ayurvedic Aspect According to Ayurveda, Skin (twak) is originated from the superficial portion of Rakta. It consists of seven layers and the diseases affecting each layer have been mentioned by the Acharyas. In Ayurveda, various skin disorders are detailed under the heading of Kushta & Kshudra rogas. Kushta is a raktapradoshaja vikaara, occurs with pitta predominance and rakta and twak as adhishtaana. Fungal infections can be considered under, Dadru kushta, vicharchikaa type of kushta that is classified under both categories due to quick invading nature. As per the definition, the reddish coloured pidaka (lesion) in the form of mandala (rounded lesion) with elevated borders and itching is known as Dadru. Vicharchika is (“sa kandu pidaka syava bahusrava vicharchika”) the eruptions with itching, oozing, black discoloration. Various treatment methods have been mentioned in Ayurvedic treatise for skin ailments. According to the severity of disease, proper management should be followed. Body purification (sodhana) is very effective in the management of skin diseases, along with the intake of blood purifying and skin rejuvinating Kashayas (decoction), applying medicated lepas (oinments), oils, are found to be useful. Skin is the primary barrier of human body; it has a great connection with our mind. Nowadays human beings are giving a special care to their skin, by modifying food habits and daily activities. Childhood skin disorders have developed due to by several factors like, hereditary, nutritional deficiency, lack of hygiene, worm infestation, auto- immune disorders etc. Children are more susceptible to various types of skin infection, so parents should take a special care to their children in every case.

Excess Mobile Usage
IMPACT OF EXCESS MOBILE USE IN CHILDREN
Mobiles have become an indispensable part of our lives. Especially since the Pandemic our worlds have rapidly shifted to the virtual world. Mobiles have become the only source of interaction and connection with the outside world, which has helped one to have a feel of sense of normalcy and sanity. Be it attending online classes, or chatting with friends or entertainment etc - a mobile phone is a handy and an affordable tool for all such activities for kids. As per a study conducted by the National commission for protection of child rights (NCPCR) 30.2 % of children in the age group of 8-18 years possess a smart phone and use it for various purposes, now the main purpose being online school or college. And parents are open and obliging to buy their kids smart phones to ensure smooth learning. But are smart phones used just for school?? Online classes account for an average of 3-4 hours per day. But children end up spending more than 3-4 hours per day on their mobile phones. Facebook/ WhatsApp/Instagram/playing games, watching vid-

eos has taken up a chunk of smart phone usage by kids. So on an average, children end up spending at least 6-7 hrs per day on their mobiles phones. Mobile phones may be a boon but it is like a double edged sword. It has its benefits but also has ill effects. Increased screen times have taken a toll on children’s health in the following ways1. It reduces the attention span, thus affecting academic performance 2. Spending more time on mobile phones takes away time for physical activity and thus can lead to lethargy, obesity which can further escalate to other serious health concerns. 3. Children may encounter cyber bullies or may come into contact with the wrong individuals on social media which can deeply affect their mental health and lead to anxiety, depression and other issues. 4. Children are exposed to a world of unfiltered information through their mobile phones and this may cause kids to get carried away and share their images, or do things which is not age appropriate or things which are dangerous or detrimental to them.
5. It affects children’s sleep patterns. Kids end up playing games, watching videos or talking to friends late into the night disrupting their sleep wake times. 6. Excess mobile use may affect the eyes and cause eye strain, dry eyes, headaches, myopia or poor vision in children. 7. Blue light emitted by mobile screens can cause eye damage. 8. Spending long hours on the mobile in improper body postures may cause muscles aches and pains. 9. Children may not develop adequate socializing skills and that can affect their confidence. 10. Outdoor games and physical activity gets replaced by mobile phone usage
Tips for safe mobile phone usage for children and avoiding its side effects1. Monitor the screen time and encourage kids to reduce their screen time by rewarding them. 2. Set rules for mobile phone usage during study hours, eating and sleeping. 3. Encourage kids to develop hobbies and indulge in sports and outdoor activities. 4. Ask the child to switch off their phones an hour before going to bed. 5. Avoid letting kids less than 8 yrs of age use mobile phones other than for study purposes under adult supervision. 6. Encourage kids to do eye exercises 2 - 3 times a day. 7. Make sure they keep mobiles at a distance of atleast 15 inches CLICK GYANI BABA TO GO BACK "INSIDE"
Excess Mobile Usage 8. Increasing font size on mobile phone can help reduce eye strain. 9. After long hours of exposure to screens, cotton pads soaked in rose water or cold milk or cucumber slices can be placed on their eyes for 1015 minutes which relaxes and cools the eyes. 10. Ask them to wash their eyes with cool water 2-3 times a day 11. Make them follow the 20-20-20 eye rule, every 20 minutes spent using a screen; you should try to look away at something that is 20 feet away from you for a total of 20 seconds. 12. Encourage kids to practice yoga, pranayama for 20 minutes daily. 13. Kids can practice Trataka technique under the guidance of a Yoga practitioner. This will not only benefit their eyes but also help improve concentration and focus. 14. Turn off wifi an hour before sleep time. 15. Feed them a balanced diet with adequate quantity of greens, vegetables and protein. 16. Include fruits in the diet such as Amla, oranges and berries. 17. Educate your kids about the dangers of social media and supervise their social media activity. 18. Create a positive and safe atmosphere where in kids can share their feelings and experiences and help them work on it together.
Let mobiles phones be a healthy part of your child’s life reaping only the benefits out of it.

Immunity to Panchakarma
A THREAD CONNECTING IMMUNITY TO PANCHAKARMA The Preface A tiny town on the Western coasts of Gujarat. It was 7:30 in the evening, but the city stood splendid with colors as the sunlight was still lighting up the city. It is thrilling that the sun sets pretty late in this part of the country. 'Chandu's Pan Ki Dukaan', a little shop in the Northern corner of the street was packed with men of almost all ages. This was the scene every evening as it was not just another Pan and Tea shop, but a hangout hub for the men in the town where they exchanged news and thoughts and definitely some gossips. A few minutes spent there would equip the visitors with all the updates in and around the town, in such a way that the local news channels and newspapers would sit aside. Thanks to the pandemic, now the chitchat sessions at ‘Chandu's' were a little more organized. To avoid crowding, each group had fixed their individual timings and measures of social distancing were also ob-

served. Today’s hot plate, that was served in group after group at ‘Chandu’s’, was about the sons of ‘Maheshwariji’, who was a leading industrialist in the region and owned quite a few dyeing and printing mills. Vasudev Maheshwari, had stepped into his old age and was busy enjoying life with their grandchildren and nurturing his philanthropist wife’s dreams and thus the old couple never missed to visit the brothers and sisters at their charity hospital at least twice a week. The hospital was named after his wife’s father, Vaidya Agnivesh. His elder son Vimal had got into his father’s shoes and the fabric industry was now being taken to newer heights by him. The younger son Anurag and his only daughter Shweta were settled with their respective families in the United States. Anurag was an Investment Banker and Shweta with her husband ran a restaurant.
The hot news in the town was that America returned son of the family had somehow escaped from the deadly claws of the pandemic from the foreign land and this is a homecoming for the Pardesi and he with his family would be staying back, forever and joining their family business. But what was exciting and new among the talks was that this Pardesi had come up with some kind of a health plan in association with the medical team at their charity hospital for the children of the town. So that we have a healthier next generation, strong enough to fight against and withstand any similar health challenges, that may arise in future. At The Maheshwari Mansion The US returned son of the house was showing the concern about the people round the world suffering daily with the fresh blows of the pandemic. How every year his family luckily escaped the Winter Flu by following the lifestyle and diet as directed by his Ayurveda doctor friends. And how the different Kaadhaas packed and sent by their beloved mother helped them revive from mild to moderate fever, cold and cough, so that the condition didn’t get worsened to seek any emergency medical aid. And he also specified how their family survived this pandemic with very mild symptoms where as their other friends suffered serious health problems and were left behind with fatigue and very much reduced quality of life even after surviving the acute infection. He spoke a million words about the ‘Herbo-gold' preparations given to his children in their childhood by their great grandfather which may have been the one reason that they were infected much lesser than the other kids of their age with the seasonal flues. So to keep that tradition alive and to pacify his philanthropist thirst, that runs through his veins, he was all set to do something for the society, for the future India. All the members of the family listened and agreed to him in unison. His mother who was keenly observing her son’s zeal, asked him that how exactly was he going to execute everything? As an answer to this, both brothers spoke up together and said “Don’t worry Mother we will not trouble you for making all those medicinal powders, lickables and decoctions of yours. As our charity hospital is blessed with a handful of young, enthusiastic, professional Ayurvedic Physicians and
Immunity to Panchakarma they have agreed to organize everything.” On hearing that, mother gave a thoughtful smile to her sons. The Proceedings So, as the next step a meeting of certain responsible social figures of the town was called upon to convey the methodology of the campaign. As all meetings were held at their house only, their mother was a silent participant in everything, and she came to know that they were planning a Rasayana Therapy for the children. She was very happy on hearing that. What is Rasayana? After all the official meetings, in the evening, mother asked her sons, what made them think about this Rasayana in children? The elder son replied that, as told by the team of Ayurvedic physicians, Rasayana is the Rejuvenation Therapy, which aims at maintaining the human body at its healthiest peak and as a healthy body is the resort of a healthy mind, this may be the perfect health maintenance that could be thought about. And to build a healthy and wealthy nation we wish to pioneer this kind of a movement. Why Rasayana in Children? On hearing that, mother asked, “but why doing rejuvenation therapy in children? They already are young and their bodies also relatively fresher?” Now the younger one flung over, he said to their mother that, even they were doubtful about this earlier but the Ayurvedic team showed them solid classical references from the precious treatises of Ayurveda, which clearly mentioned about starting Rasayana at a tender age and not at all in the old age. “Moreover, rather than immunizing against each pathogen, isn’t it smarter to think about upgrading the stamina of the body, so that immune system becomes strong enough to recognize and fight against any kind of a foreign invasion. Though the immunization against the most prevalent diseases is a must have.” Their mother was quite impressed that her children were not simply beating around the bush. Detoxify Before Rejuvenation? After a pause, their mother said, “my dear sons I have heard my father say that any Rasayana Therapy must be preceded by a detoxification procedure called the Panchakarma Therapy. What are your plans about that?” Hearing that the younger son said that though The Ancient Ayurveda | Jul-Aug 2021 | Issue 8

Immunity to Panchakarma such a thing was suggested by one of the experts but the idea was dropped as it would consume a lot of time and energy and the scheduled immunity boosting program may not get a mass participation, as everyone wants things to be simply accessible. This answer was not welcomed by their mother and she stressed upon a detoxification before the Rasayana campaign. Days passed by and the preparations were going on at faster rates. Both sons asked their mother to keep calm, and keep herself content at that old age and thus children in the family were made to spend more time with their grandma. Is Something Wrong With Mother? As days moved on, the elder daughter in-law of the house started noticing few changes in the behavior of their beloved mother, and informed her husband. “These days our mother is busy playing with the kids and dyeing clothes in different colors.” Vimal smiled on hearing this and said, “Oh! My dearest wife, these colors run in our blood, dyeing fabrics is our ancestral profession. Mother may be just showing the basic, manual, traditional methods of dyeing to the kids.” She was not convinced with the response and requested her husband to stay back home the next day, just till the noon and to see for himself. Is That Actually A Muddy Game ? The dawn of the next day broke into the Maheshwari Mansion. As the Sun arose the little party was seen playing in the backyard of the mansion. Kids happily playing in mud, which obviously is their universal favorite. But there was something peculiar. They were not simply playing. It seemed as if they were doing something that was already assigned to them.

Why Dyeing The Muddy Cloth? One of them would get a white cloth and another one would wet that piece of cloth in muddy water and hand it over to their grandma who would spread it neatly under the sun, when dried, we heard her ask one of the kids, “Which color do you want?” Then she took that dirty dried cloth and started dyeing it blue. This was weird, taking a muddy cloth for dyeing ! Then the eldest of the children came to her with a red cloth, this little soul was irritated and unhappy. She said, “Grandma this is for the second time you are giving me improperly colored cloth. Is this how Grandpa’s men dye the clothes at our firm? If so, definitely we are going to be sued.” Witnessing this much drama was the height of Vimal’s tolerance. He rushed to the back yard and reassured the child, “no my child we don’t dye fabrics this way. In fact our fabrics are world famous for their quality and vividity.” The Fire Under The Ashes ! Turning to his mother Vimal asked, “what for the heaven’s sake has happened to you? Mother I know you are not unaware about the fundamentals of dyeing, which is nothing but the cleanliness of the cloth used. No dyeing would be appropriate if the fabric is not clean. “On hearing this, she said, “you can’t dye a dirty cloth but you can do Rasayana Therapy in a dirty body, right?” Finishing these words as usual she started reciting some hymn. Hearing those lyrics entered the younger son Anurag with another person who was a senior Ayurveda Consultant and had come along on his request to clear some doubts regarding the proposed campaign. Hearing their mother’s hymn, the guest asked Anurag, when you had such a knowledgeable person
in your house, why did you come searching for me at all? What this wise lady just recited, itself is the answer to the query you made over the phone.” By this time the entire house was in the backyard, hearing the doctor’s words everyone was taken aback. The head of the family, Vasudev Maheshwari took few steps towards the guest and introduced himself. He said, “Sir, this lady about whom you just commented is my wife. She’s the loving mother of my three children and my lifetime companion and sorry for the misconception, she is not a learned person, as you know education in our generation was not everyone’s cup of tea, especially for ladies of those days. Hearing this, the senior doctor said, “what you said may be right, but with my experience of long years of teaching and practicing Ayurveda, I doubt your statement. Every Truth Shows Itself Some Day ! “Let’s confirm it right now”, came up Vimal backed by his father too. The doctor asked the wise lady, “Oh! Respectful lady of the family, can you please explain what made you to chant those verses in Sanskrit?”. This question was the next shock to the family. The eldest daughter in-law of the house came forward and said, “ was that Sanskrit?, I have heard mother chant such hymns now and then, but I thought those were parts of some prayer song she byhearted in her childhood.” As the answer to everyone’s quest the lady of the house started to open up, layer after layer.

I appreciate the initiative of the Rasayana Campaign for our children that you are planning for. But I strongly believe that in today’s situation even the newborn’s body is impure because of the improper diet and lifestyle of the mother. These young children who are fed upon on almost every fancied thing on the earth, except some real healthy, natural, wholesome diet. How could we expect the Rasayana to show its real effect
Immunity to Panchakarma on their bodies and mind when the primary and the most important step itself is skipped.” “Moreover this is a first of it’s kind venture and I think that’s why only, everything should be dealt with utmost care. Because for a careless mistake of ours, the entire science of Ayurveda, would have to pay off. Which has been fighting for ages just to make it’s presence known. But on the other hand if we succeed in helping influencing the commonest men of the country, we can shine like never before in this era as the entire world sits with eyes fixed on us.” The Re-Incarnation Hearing all this, the two sons came running to their mother and asked, “When did you learn all that mother? And why didn’t you ever reveal this to us?” The daughter in-laws came forward and asked, “why didn’t you ever try to practice the knowledge you have gained, not doing so, didn’t you walk away from your Karma?” Mother was smiling, listening to all her curious children, she looked at her companion of life from a distance and said, “I am sorry that I didn’t mention about my medical training which I received from my father right from the first day I remember of my life, so it was much of life to me, than a profession. And moreover this is the science of life itself ”. The doctor nodded his head in favor of the words. And who says I ran away from my Karma, you may ask your father, right from the day I entered this house, to this date I can very confidently say that no one had to go to a hospital other than for some surgical emergencies.” At this point everyone in the house started to flash back their memories. The elder son said, “Oh! Mother, what I thought was God’s grace, actually was the result of your work for the people in the family. My kids have never seen a doctor, only Grandma's Kadhaas cured them. Oh! God… so blessed are we.” The younger one also joined him and said, “those tiny packs of some home remedies that you sent for us, from time to time were real medicines ???, Oh! Mother, you are the ultimate. Let’s redesign the program, what do you say doctor?” He enquired turning to the senior physician.

Immunity to Panchakarma Operation Rasayana Reloaded !!! So, everything was scrutinized again and a detoxification schedule prior to the Rasayana Therapy was planned. Before letting all the volunteers know this the brothers discussed the entire strategy with their mother. What is Panchakarma? Anurag asked his mother to explain little more about the detoxification of body. Hearing this, their mother asked them, “have you heard of Panchakarma?” Anurag answered, “yes mother it is some kind of a relaxation massage etc. and is quite famous globally, especially the Panchakarma of Kerala.” Mother said, “This is the most serious problem, that things are wrongly grasped among the people.” She continued, “Panchakarma is actually a purificatory therapy. It cleanses the body of the morbid dosas called the Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It is a combination of 5 procedures called – Vamana – Induced Therapeutic Vomiting , Virechana – Induced Therapeutic Diarrhea, Vasti – Therapeutic Enema, Nasya – Therapeutic removal of dosas from the head by instilling medicines through the nostril, Raktha moksha – Therapeutic Letting of Blood.” “There is no place for the oil massage, as you said among the Panchakarma. Oil massage and induced sweating, using steaming techniques are just the pre-requisite steps of Panchakarma, and not at all the main procedure.” Is Panchakarma Done In Children? “Why not? The Ayurvedic classics explain that the procedure of Vamana is performed as the very first procedure in the neonate immediately after birth, to prevent any further complication like pneumonia that may arise due to aspiration of the fluid in the womb of the mother. The great sage Kasyapa, who is the classical pediatrician, in his treatise called the Kasyapa Samhita has clearly explained about the various times and conditions where Panchakarma is performed in children of different ages depending of the strength of their body and the strength of the disease. And Ayurvedic pediatricians do practice it.” “Vimal, do you remember once when your daughter Gayatri had some kind of an itchy, oozy skin disease

on her scalp and she vomited out all the milk that I made her drink early in the morning. And, you were so irritated that why I gave her so much of milk for the first time, that too so early in the morning. But, dear son, do you remember, it’s been 4-5 years now, but she hasn’t suffered from it ever again. That is the highlight of Panchakarma. It can uproot the total disease from the body. And in case of Gayatri, It is an induces vomiting. As a little child she used to suffer from those skin disorders now and then, also she had that cough and chest congestions all the time. That’s why I planned to conduct a Vamana – induced vomiting, for her. That jaggery paste with some herbs that I prepared for her after that vomiting episode, which she loved so much to have every day, for almost a month, was nothing but the Rasayana. Now you realize, why the detoxification is so important? Your daughter itself is the best example.” Hearing this Vimal’s wife said, “Mother is right that lickable was very effective for Gayatri, as she has never got back those respiratory and skin complaints again. Oh! Mother, you are the true divine healer for our family, actually next to God.” The Happy Ending And A New Beginning! • The entire campaign was redesigned and executed as Panchakarma and Rasayana Therapy. • The participation was much massive than the expected. • The review and follow up was well organized and patient friendly. • Future ventures were on the cards. • The Mother of the house now had an official chamber in the Charity Hospital, with a sign board – ‘Vaidya Ayushmati Maheshwari, Chairperson’, which was a gift from the legend, Vasudev Maheshwari to his wife. • The chamber always remained empty as, the mother Ayushmati was always busy in putting together her home. • But one change that had happened was that, the Maheshwari Mansion was now the second home to many young, enthusiastic, passionate torch bearers of the Divine Science called Ayurveda.

So for ensuring a better future, we need to ensure proper physical and emotional development of kids. Now, how do we do that? Yoga is the answer that helps in achieving both aims. When to start? The age, when they start to understand the instructions given by a yoga expert is the best suitable age. As early as 4years, yoga can be introduced to kids. During the preschool time, children are more curious to learn a new thing. It can be introduced as a fun activity to the kids. At the age of 4years, when they enter the school phase, children often find it difficult to sit in class; they are restless, not able to concentrate. Here Yoga can play a major role in uplifting his confidence, patience and making the child physically active.
How Yoga helps in Emotional health of kids? • Improve concentration • Relieve stress and anxiety • Helps in emotional development • Teach them self acceptance • Improve memory & thereby improves academic performance • Boost confidence • Teach them patience Role of Yoga in physical development of kids: • Improve their flexibility • Improve immunity • Strengthen digestive system • Promotes physical strength • Improves coordination and balance • Improve motor skills • Improves posture • Strengthen respiratory system SIMPLE YOGA POSTURES FOR KIDS: 1. BREATHING EXERCISES: Breathing exercises or pranayama plays an inevitable role in physical as well as emotional development of children. They learns at an early age about mindful breathing.
Empower kids with YOGA 1. Bramari pranayama- Make the child sit in a comfortable posture. Let him close his eyes. He/She has to inhale(expand chest) and exhale by making a bee humming sound(mmmm…). Tell the child to concentrate on the vibrations. 3 rounds can be practiced.
vibration produced by this chanting will make child’s day active, happy and positive. Duration of yoga practice? The duration can range from 15minutes to 1 hour based on the age of child. In preschool age it is better to limit to 15 minutes. Yoga should not become as a tiresome activity. The child should enjoy and do yoga. In between each yogic exercise, proper relaxation needs to be given. And At the end of session,
a deep relaxation technique(Shavasana) can be performed.
2. A-U-M Kara chanting- This is a good breathing practice to freshen the kids day. The child has to inhale through nose and then exhale by opening mouth, making ‘A’ kara sound. Repeat it 3 times. Then again inhale and then exhale with ‘U’ Kara sound. Repeat it 3 times. Then again inhale and then exhale with ‘M’ Kara sound. Repeat it 3 times. The positive

Yoga brings about positive impact on children’s wellbeing and help them succeed in this world. So Let us together empower kids through yoga and bring joy and peace in their life ……… As the wise says-Children are natural imitators, gift them with a practice worthy of imitation.

Apoorva Vaidyas of India A Series of Talkshow Episode - 2
Hon'ble Chief Guest Speaker Dr Dinesh K. S. (M.D. [Ayu.]) He is currently working as Professor and Head in Department of Koumarabhrthya, at Vaidyaratnam P. S. Varier Ayurveda College, Kottakal, Kerala. He has got about 17 years of teaching & 21 years of clinical experience in the pediatric field. He is the founder of CIMCD (Centre for integrated management of children with differential abilities) and is also the founder of AyuCALM (Ayurveda centre for autism and learning disability management). He is conducting several researches under the Government of India and other NGOs. Sir has done more than 250 presentations in different national and international seminars and conferences. Academically, he owns 12 important publications in the form of scientific articles and books. What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is knowledge, not only lifestyle or any food or exercise. It deals with the entire knowledge related to humans and their environment. So obviously allopathy, naturopathy, homoeopathy everything comes under Ayurveda. Ayurveda can be developed from our home, from our lifestyle, from our day to day activities. In every area, we are discriminating what is good and bad. This discrimination of knowledge is known as Ayurveda. Whatever Ayurveda we have seen from granthas, from academics, apart from that Ayurveda is an inside culture which should be developed from our inner self. Development of Dinesh Sir’s academic and clinical career I was born and brought up in a small village in Kerala as the son of a traditional Vaidya. After completing BAMS, I went to IPGTRA Jamnagar and passed out from there with the gold medal in M.D Koumarabhrthya (Pediatrics). Then I joined Kerala government services as a medical officer but the quest for knowledge was not getting satisfied well enough. Hence, I resigned from there and joined Vaidyaratnam P
S Varier Ayurveda College Kottakal as an assistant professor and from there my academic life got started. Now working as Professor and along with that serving as a physician in 5 different Ayurveda hospitals. We are also doing Researches in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH as well as AIIMS New Delhi in 3 different pediatric areas. Mentally retarded child is not a curse – it’s a Gift from God Mentally retarded child is never a curse. They can be termed to be as a special child. When they get diagnoses so, parents will be facing many thoughts and mind of them will be complexed of. Some may accept the fact, and some may go into depression. But in actuality, it was the selection of God that they got a great opportunity and god knows that they are capable enough to handle such a special child. Nowadays many facilities are available to treat them. so, it is important to diagnose the condition at the earliest whether it be down’s syndrome or cerebral palsy or ADHD. My advice to such parents is that; arrange all the available treatments for them to improve their quality of life whether it is from Ayurveda, speech The Ancient Ayurveda | Jul-Aug 2021 | Issue 8

Talk Show: Apoorva Vaidyas of India therapy or even modern medicine too. Major treatments are available for a special child We are having 3 projects for the treatment of differently-abled children. First is CIMCD, in that we are integrating treatment with modern medicine, Ayurveda and speech therapy. Apart from that many projects are also been running with the Government of India specially AYUCALM, in which we mainly focus on immunity development and also for autistic children. Agasthya is another program exclusively for autism in which we offer training for parents and also we teach them to do therapies in their autistic children especially we train them to do speech therapy, Ayurveda therapies etc. We are also conducting genome research in collaboration with the government of India. In that, we developed Gut Therapy Protocol in the management of autism and the results are yet to be published. We are offering 7 days free training to parents of autistic children. What is autism? Autism is a way of thought developed in a child’s mind. It's just opposite to that of socialism. An autistic child will be in their own world, without having any connections with the social world and it’s curable by medicines and therapy. Many at times, it’s hard to diagnose the condition. Up to 2.5 yrs, it will be very difficult to diagnose the condition. The child won’t speak much, doesn’t interact with anyone, and will always be busy in their own world created by them. When the parents get noticed with this, it is important to get an advice from a clinical Psychologist. ADHD–Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Syndrome Attention Deficit Disorder is a hype created by over caring parents. An overactive kid should not be that much disciplined to his parents they may ask questions, they may be disobedient as every child is different, but the parents may consider the child as attention-seeking. But when this defence gets increased, it becomes unmanageable and it can be diagnosed as ADHD. In this condition, a doctor not only has to give Ayurveda medicines but also, has to manage the child’s parents, his environment and then only we can develop a better quality of life for them.
34 | Issue 8 | Jul-Aug 2021 | The Ancient Ayurveda
Usually, ADHD will get diagnosed by 4-5 years. If the parents are supportive then it can be treated by the next 4 years. Music therapy in Childcare Music therapy is a complicated system of treatment based on chakras. We have to set ragas according to the chakras. So we just simplified this complex therapy. Music is a sound, which varies from the mood and situation. Sound from a factory can create irritation whereas a lullaby makes a person to sleep. The same thing we are doing here, for example, an ADHD child, any type of soft music with lullabies were preferable not any disco type of songs. We can classify music into two, one is vatapitta samana which can be given for ADHD conditions and another is vatakapha samana which can be given for mental retardation, intellectual development disability like conditions. Importance of Pre-conception Care Western culture is not a thing to be blamed of for developmental disorders in children. Every country has got with different cultures. It’s not necessary to blame any particular culture of a country. It depends on satmya (adaptability). When we are adapting any other culture which is not adaptable to us, then it results in diseases. Another thing is that when we are planning for a baby we are not doing any purification or preparation of our body which is so essential to do. This way of preparing the body is termed to be as preconception care. In Ayurveda, we are customizing preconception care according to the individualized need of couple and depend on their body conditions. Effect of COVID in kids We are having one project – Vengara model for covid. An unnecessary hype has been created in covid. Comparing to the crude death rates of previous years, in actual the death rates has been reduced this year. Like any other diseases, covid is also infectious. To prevent that, it is not necessary to confine ourselves in. Just we need to improve our immunity by good food, good thoughts, meditation etc. For social hygiene, we can practice handwashing, wearing mask etc.
Talk Show: Apoorva Vaidyas of India Golden words from an Apoorva Vaidya – a message note to students. Ayurveda is heavily loaded with knowledge and students are a bit confused with the right pathway to choose. It’s not about the pathway we are taking, its matters about the development we achieved from
CLICK GYANI BABA TO GO BACK "INSIDE"
that pathway. So it’s my advice to them that choose a systematic way of research and publish Ayurveda globally. It’s not a chance, but a surety, that each Ayurveda doctor is capable of getting a Nobel prize in future.

Kids Special "Moringa Dosa" Dr SHRADDHA PUROHIT
(BAMS, CRAV)
Dosas are ever time favorites of all ages. If it’s been prepared in a healthy way, it adds up a greater content in our daily nutrition. Today, we came up with a new recipe, moringa dosa. This is probably the healthiest dosa that I ever made. Dosa contains green drumstick or moringa leaves and different types of millets which are very nutritious and provides all essential nutrients for people
who lack them. Ingredients: • Bajra ( pearl millet) - 5 spoon/ small half bowl • Jowar (Sorghum, milo) - 5 spoon • Raagi ( finger millet) - 5 spoon • Black gram - 1bowl
• • • •
Fenugreek seed - 2 teaspoon Salt - 1 teaspoon Hing ( asafoetida powder) - ½ teaspoon Moringa leaves - 1 bowl
Preparation: • wash and soak all the Grains and fenugreek seed for around 6 hours • Drain all the water from the Grains and grind them with salt. • Allow it to ferment for around 6 to 8 hours. • Next day, add 1/2 teaspoon of hing along with that add washed and fresh drumstick leaves little by little. Mix the whole contents nicely for few minutes till all the leaves are coated well with batter. (Batter should not be too thin or too thick, it should be free-floating consistency) • Keep the batter, aside for 10 minutes. • Grease the tava( pan) with ghee and spread that batter on it. • Close it with the lid for 3 minutes so the leaves are cooked properly • Always do it on medium flame. • Remove the lid and flip the dosa. Drizzle some ghee around the dosa and cook for few more minutes. • After turning into some brownish color, you can turn off the flame and our crispy delicious millet dosa is ready! • Dosa can be served along with onion and tomato chutney/coriander leaves chutney / Coconut chutney.

NOT ALL NECK PAINS ARE INCURABLE – HAVE A WAY THROUGH AYURVEDA The term Spondylosis is used to signify deteriorating changes in the intervertebral discs. Cervical spondylosis is a condition that happens due to degeneration of the discs in the cervical region and such changes in the lumbar region cause lumbar spondylosis. IVDP is defined as intervertebral disc prolapse which occurs due to improper postures, trauma, and degeneration. The frequency of these conditions is growing at an alarming rate particularly among people working with computers and those who are having sedentary jobs. Individuals with cervical spondylosis will have pain and numbness in the neck and arm in variable intensities. Low back pain is the common appearance of lumbar spondylosis. IVDP causes stiffness and pain in the low back region that radiates pain and numbness in the leg. These conditions, if continued causes severe disability to such an extent that the individual will have to change his profession many times. A prolapsed intervertebral disc is also identified as a slipped disc. Here, there would be a bulging out of the inner part of the disc. This is a condition that affects the spine in which there is a tear in the outer fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc allowing the soft central portion to bulge. The intervertebral discs are present between the vertebral bodies of the spine. The discs would be rubber or jelly-like and they act like cushions to the spine when it bends. The discs consist of gelatinous inner nucleus pulposus and strong outer annulus fibrosus. Stages of Disc prolapse Disc Dehydration This is the stage where the outer layer of the disc weakens and the fibers around the disc become loose. This leads to flattening of the disc with loss of height and increase of diameter. This is called a bulge.
40 | Issue 8 | Jul-Aug 2021 | The Ancient Ayurveda
Disc Prolapse This is a condition where the outer layer called the annulus fibrosis cracks and the soft interior of the disc starts protruding through the outer layer. When this happens, the prolapsed part of the disc tends to touch on the adjoining nerves and it’s at this point that you start experiencing pain and other associated symptoms. Disc Extrusion At this point, some part of the protruded nucleus pulposus starts to push out through the outer part of the disc and gets detached. Disc Sequestration In this stage, the free fragment of the nucleus pulposus (the innermost part of the disc) manages to get within the spinal canal. Who gets slipped disc? Doctors have pinned age as a factor in many of the cases. In addition, smokers are also more likely to get slipped discs because smoking makes the discs lose their natural flexibility. Furthermore, overweight people are also more likely to suffer from a slipped disc because their discs have to support extra weight than they can handle. We can classify this under two major divisions 1. CERVICAL RADICULOPATHY Cervical radiculopathy is a disease process marked by nerve compression from herniated disk material or arthritic bone spurs. This impingement typically produces neck and radiating arm pain or numbness, sensory deficits, or motor dysfunction in the neck and upper extremities. Cervical radiculopathy occurs with pathologies that cause symptoms on the nerve roots. Those can be compression, irritation, traction, and a lesion on the nerve root caused by either a herniated disc, foraminal narrowing, or degenerative spondylitic change (Osteoarthritic changed or degeneration) leading to stenosis of the intervertebral foramen. Most of the time cervical radiculopathy appears unilaterally; however, it is possible for bilateral symptoms to be present if severe bony spurs are present
Disease Column by Expert at one level, impinging/irritating the nerve root on both sides. If peripheral radiation of pain, weakness, or pins and needle are present, the location of the pain will follow back to the concerned affected nerve root. Characteristics/Clinical Presentation Typical Dermatomal Pattern of the Upper Limb Typical symptoms of cervical radiculopathy are: • Irradiating arm pain corresponding to a dermatomal pattern, • Neck pain, paraesthesia, • Muscle weakness in a myotomal pattern, • Reflex impairment/loss, • Headaches, scapular pain, • Sensory and motor dysfunction in upper extremities and neck Upper limb movements that are affected: • C1/C2- Neck flexion/extension • C3- Neck lateral flexion • C4- Shoulder elevation • C5- Shoulder abduction • C6- Elbow flexion/wrist extension • C7- Elbow extension/wrist flexion • C8- Thumb extension • T1- Finger abduction 2. LUMBAGO-SCIATICA Sciatica and Disc Prolapse - Sciatica is a pain in the leg caused by compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that are branches of the sciatic nerve. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. In addition to pain, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg. Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body. Causes of sciatica - Sciatica is generally caused by the compression of a lumbar spine nerve root L4 or L5 or sacral nerve roots S1, S2, or S3, or far less commonly, by compression of the sciatic nerve itself. Sciatica may also be experienced in late pregnancy, primarily resulting from the uterus pressing on the sciatic nerve, and, secondarily, from the muscular tension and/or vertebral compression consequent to carrying the extra weight of the fetus, and the postural changes inherent to pregnancy. Treatment for Slipped Disc A slipped disc treatment is mainly targeted at relieving the symptoms associated and prevention further recurrence. Treatment for Slipped Disc in Contemporary Medicine (Allopathic Treatment) To relieve the symptoms of this problem, conventional treatment comprises of using pain killers or traction. These treatments are not always successful and the user might need to undergo invasive procedures like epidural injections to help avoid further complications. If it is not responding to any interventions, spinal surgery can be done to remove the protruding disc, or to increase the space for the emerging nerve with or without fusion of the vertebrae is recommended. Ayurvedic Treatment for Slip Disc: Ayurveda offers a very tangible alternative that works in almost any case of a prolapsed or slipped disc. Ayurvedic medications comprising of herbal decoctions, tablets, capsules and oils for external application are very effective in providing relief in patients with mild to moderate problems. Persons with chronic problems and those with the severe intensity of symptoms would require Ayurvedic therapies like Abhyanga (Medicated Oil applications and massages), Swedana (Sudation therapy), Shodana therapies (detoxification) using Vasthi in the case of back pain related problems, and Nasyam in the case of neck related problems. These therapies are used to heal the nerves affected by the herniated disc and to relieve the muscular spasm as well. Detoxification, that helps in reducing inflammation (Pittahara), healing of the damaged disc (mamsa bhagna), to reduce pain (vedanahara), and to strengthen the region (Rasayana). Other modalities also include • External therapies & internal medications • Panchakarma, • Advice of lifestyles and food changes • Panchakarma Basti, Virechana, and Nasya • External PPS, Abhyanga, Kashaya Seka, SSPS, Lepa, kati basti • Internal Reducing inflammation (Pittahara) • Healing of the damaged disc (mamsa bhagna) • Reducing the pain (vedanahara)
• Strengthening the region (Rasayana) Now a days many Ayurveda hospitals integrate physiotherapy and yoga thereby helps to provide a comprehensive healing for patients suffering from disc prolapse. The treatment given by Ayurveda protocol provides a unique advantage to patients. These treatments help the patients avoid surgery, are safe and effective for the patient, and are natural and holistic. In addition, through these treatments, a patient can avoid the chance of a recurrence of the condition. Importance of yoga Yoga is not an exercise. Yoga is an approach to a perfect body and a perfect mind, and it relates to the five koshas of the human body. The first being for the attainment of bliss i.e, Samadhi, other four Kosas are Annamayakosa, Manomayakosa, Pranamayakosa and Vijnanamayakosa. Annamayakosa – meant the Physique and yoga therapy for this kosa are (1) Food regulation or Naturopathy, where intake of only raw vegetable, juice, mixed vegetable juice along with the juice of karuka (Cynodon dactylon) grass which is good for nervous system are advised; and (2) Yogasana with correct body postures while sitting/resting are advised. Manomayakosa - According to manomayakosha, (1) Mind plays an important role in the occurrence of the diseases which the modern medicine terms psychosomatic diseases. It is estimated about 85% of modern diseases are psychic. In this case, patients are advised to practice savasana and yoganidra in order to achieve relaxation leading to lessening the muscular spasm in the spinal column of the patient. (2) Meditation is the solution for all psychosomatic diseases. The right meditation for this is cittavrittinirodha for attainment of dhyana; and (3) Auto-

Disease Column by Expert suggestion, a powerful technique of treatment by mental visualization. Therefore, three suggestions are relaxation, meditation, and autosuggestion. Pranamayakosa - is stimulation of prana by practicing pranayama and certain other techniques of Yoga through which all the diseases will be cured. Reiki practice, pranic healing, etc, based on the prana force inside the body are different techniques to stimulate prana. The lumbar region which is directly connected with manipuarkacakra, and the cervical area connected with visuddhicakra are stimulated with certain techniques to cure diseases like IVDP and degeneration of spine. Vijnanamayakosa - Practice of right sitting and lying postures to support muscles around the spine are necessary for the health of the spine. Lakhubhujangsana, Sarpasana, Makarasana, Dhanurasana, kandharasana, marjarasana, vyaghrasana and salabhasana are recommended. Disc prolapse has got better treatment options in Ayurveda, which alleviates the need for surgery and improves the quality of life. Our experience of over 1000 years and time tested medication makes us the best at offering the services required to effectively heal. The treatment offered is time-tested, safe and effective. The treatment is natural and holistic which retards the chances of recurrence. Let the patients walk out with renewed confidence in life.

According to WHO, Antenatal care is the routine health control of presumed healthy pregnant women without symptoms ( screening ) in order to diagnose diseases or complicating obstetric conditions without symptoms and to provide information about lifestyle, pregnancy and delivery. Ayurveda literature has described about Garbhiniparicharya including month-wise dietary regimen for pregnant women and its effects, Deities and mode of life to be avoided during pregnancy, the effect of the use of contraindicated things by pregnant women. IMPORTANCE Antenatal care helps to reduce the risk during pregnancy and increase the chance of safe normal delivery. Garbhiniparicharya provides the need for the growing foetus, the maintenance of maternal health, the strength and vitality required for labour and for successful lactation. Inadequate care during this time breaks a critical link in the continuum of care and affects both women and babies. Acharyas had described dietary regimens to meet increased calorie requirements of pregnant women, Behaviour alteration helps to enhance spirituality, medications and procedures to avoid complications during pregnancy and delivery.
Women's Health Care : Antenatal Care GARBHINI PARICHARYA According to Acharya Susrutha, Women from the very first day of pregnancy should remain in the high spirit, pious, decorated with ornaments, wear clean white garments and perform religious rites, do auspicious deeds, worship deities, Brahmanas and priests. Her sleeping and sitting should cover with a soft cushion or mattress, not be very high, possess an elevated upper portion for headrest and should be perfect and very comfortable. Month 9 Unctuous yavagus ( preparation with rice and water) meat of jangala desa animals can be advised till delivery. AnuvasanaVasti with madhuraoushadhasiddha thaila and the use of pichus in yoni can be done for easy delivery. By analysing these month-wise dietetics, it is clear that this has been explained to meet the time to time need of pregnant women for maintaining her health, contributing to foetal development according to its need and helping her for uncomplicated timely labour. The mother’s food habits and nutritional status before conception as well as during pregnancy influence the outcome of pregnancy. In short, the diet for a pregnant lady should be sweet potency, cold, nourishing, wholesome and laxative. When drugs with sweet potency are used it is whole, it increases all the dhatus nourishing, gives stability, good for sense organs, energy-giving etc.

Ayurvedic Beauty Tips
AYURVEDIC BEAUTY TIPS Beauty has a got socio-medical importance nowadays. Beauty doesn’t mean to have a well-built body with a fair complexion; it means to have a healthy mind & body with healthy skin whether it is darker or fairer. Let’s have some home remedies which can be effectively used for improving our skin health. 1. FOR REMOVING SUNTAN – tan, a word which has frightened a lot many us to expose to sunlight. Even a sunny day becomes a villain to beauty conscious ones. It is easy to remove the suntan with some home remedy. Take a tablespoon of fine coffee powder, add one tsp of nimbu juice, one tsp of rice flour, one pinch of turmeric and mix all those with necessary quantity of honey. Make the mixture into a paste form and apply this evenly in the face (Better to do a patch test in hand before application). After 1520 minutes it can be washed off with lukewarm water. You can see the glowing skin with an immediate effect. 2. NATURAL CLEANSER & MOISTURIZER – now a day, dry skin and ageing have been very common due to climatic variation. We are forced to use chemical-filled moisturizers in our day to day for the same. With natural home remedies,
we can maintain beautiful healthy skin. Coconut water is the best cleanser as well as a moisturizer. Even coconut milk can also be applied by dipping in a cotton pad and we can cleanse the face well. Ayurvedic Beauty Tips 3. NATURAL LIP BALMS – lip balms have become a necessity of our life. It will be interesting to prepare natural lip balms at home. Take one big beetroot and prepare juice of it in a mixer. Add this juice to a small pan and add ghee along with this and heat the mixture in very slow heat. After some time the mixture gets properly mixed up and thick form in a balm consistency. After cooling, it can be kept in the fridge for even up to one month. You will get beautiful, pink softy lips without any added chemicals.
4. HAIR GROWTH & PREVENTING GREY HAIR – hair has got a bigger part in maintaining the cosmetic sense of a person. The cosmetic aspect doesn’t depend on the length of the hair, whether it is short or long, healthy hair is needed. For maintaining healthy hair, we can make a hair pack which can be applied once a week or in 15 days. Take a handful of curry leaves and make it into a paste. Add some organic henna

powder to this paste and mix it properly by adding tea. This hair pack can be prepared and kept overnight in an iron container. The next day it can be applied and kept for minimum of 45-60 minutes followed by a normal wash without any shampoo. In the first application, itself, you can find healthy smooth and shiny hair without any keratin like treatments.
5. NATURAL MANICURE – healthy shining nails are a marker of overall health. In Ayurveda asthi dhathu plays an important role in maintaining the health of nails. For doing an Ayurvedic manicure, the whole hand can be soaked for 10 minutes in a tumbler filled with water added with lemon juice and rosewater. After that, clean and cut the nails properly. After drying, jathyadi kera soaked in a cotton swab can be applied to the nails of both arms. Jathyadi kera prevents the damage caused to nails and promotes good nail growth.
