CaDance 2015 The Excellence of Form Time travel expresses a fundamental desire and is therefore also an important subject in literature and especially in cinema. Food for the imagination; but what would happen if we really could acquire the power to hurtle ourselves to another time? Like someone from the early Middle Ages who would be completely lost in our time, we would have trouble finding our way in the early Middle Ages, or in the year 3010. Yet we do know our own form of time travel. Aided by our imagination, we can travel comfortably to another time. Caught in our own time, we share in great works of literature, music and visual arts. We read Homer, listen to Monteverdi. But we do this in the realization that our odyssee to Homer’s time is a matter of reconstruction; we give form to the original texts from our own perceptions.

to settle.’ And the Greek author Yannis Kiourtsakis wants art where ‘yesterday is in dialogue with today.’ A striking aspect of the CaDance productions this year is that they re-evaluate the great subjects that in the history of art have been an endless source of inspiration for artists. The big themes will be brought to life by eminent choreographers and young dance makers. They put the dance with their performances in the middle of society: Club Guy & Roni with their contemplations on the Odyssey, ICKamsterdam with their version of L’Etranger, Samir Calixto with his translation into dance of Milton’s Paradise Lost. Each new generation of artists feels the need to reformulate the topicality of these subjects. This touches on the essence of art itself: a contemporary reflection is made anew of subjects that in the history of the arts have always been treated – life, love, morality, choices, good versus evil, the individual versus the collective, the other. The essence of this contemporary reflection is not so much the subject itself, which is timeless, but the form in which these great subjects are viewed by subsequent generations. Art is giving shape, time and again, to these great stories. The essence of art is form. Art loses its intensity when it becomes part of political games. On the other hand it can hold up a mirror to politicians and the powers that be: Ecce Homo.

Recent discussions about the position of the arts usually feature policy makers, politicians, and directors of cultural institutions behaving like politicians. A remarkable element in this discussion is the way the arts are broken down into an equation; 20% education, 15% talent development, another 20% social cohesion, leaving 45% of benefit to the social climate and cultural tourism. Politicians have appropriated the arts and made them part of a political fencing match. For the Left, art is primarily an instrument of the social domain, something which, for the Right, the arts certainly must not be, and for even When asked why there wasn’t a further Right, the arts shouldn’t be, paragraph devoted to the arts in the period. CaDance 2015 The Excellence of Form Tijdreizen is een fundamenteel verlangen en daarmee ook een belangrijk onderwerp in literatuur en vooral in films. Voer voor de fantasie, maar wat zou er gebeuren als we onszelf werkelijk naar een andere tijd zouden kunnen katapulteren? Zoals een vroege Middeleeuwer reddeloos verloren zou zijn in onze tijd, zouden wij dat zijn in de vroege Middeleeuwen, of in het jaar 3010. Toch kennen we onze eigen vorm van reizen door de tijd. Met behulp van onze verbeeldingskracht verplaatsen we ons comfortabel naar andere tijden. Gevangen in de eigen tijd zijn we deelgenoot van de grote werken uit de literatuur, muziek en beeldende kunst. We lezen Homerus, luisteren naar Monteverdi. Maar we doen dit in het besef dat onze odyssee naar de tijd van Homerus bestaat uit het herscheppen, het vanuit onze beleving vormgeven van de oorspronkelijke tekst.

Opvallend aan veel van de CaDance producties dit jaar is dat de grote onderwerpen, die in de geschiedenis van de kunst een oneindige bron van inspiratie vormen, opnieuw aan de orde worden gesteld. De grote thema’s treden aan, vormgegeven door eminente choreografen en jonge dansmakers. Zij plaatsen de dans met hun voorstellingen midden in de samenleving: Club Guy & Roni met hun bespiegeling op de The Odyssey, ICKamsterdam met hun versie van L’Etranger, Samir Calixto met zijn dansante vertaling van Miltons Paradise Lost. Het is de behoefte van elke nieuwe generatie kunstenaars om de actualiteit van die thema’s opnieuw te formuleren. Daarbij raken we aan de essentie van de kunst zelf: er wordt telkens een actuele reflectie gecreëerd van onderwerpen die in de geschiedenis van de kunst steeds ter hand worden genomen – leven, liefde, moraal, keuzes, goed-kwaad, individu-collectief, de vreemdeling. De essentie van die actuele reflectie is dan ook niet zozeer het onderwerp zelf, dat is van alle tijden, maar de vorm waarin die grote thema’s door nieuwe generaties beschouwd worden. Kunst is het steeds opnieuw vormgeven van de grote verhalen. Het wezen van de kunst is de vorm. Kunst verliest zijn kracht als het deel wordt van het politieke steekspel. Daarentegen kan de kunst juist de politici en de macht een spiegel voorhouden: Ecce Homo.

Recente discussies over de positie van de kunst worden in de media vooral gevoerd door beleidsmakers, politici en zich als politici gedragende kunstdirecteuren. Opvallend is dat in die discussie de kunst vooral een instrument is in een rekenmodule: 20% educatie, 15% talentontwikkeling, nog eens 20% sociale cohesie en de resterende 45% is goed voor het leefklimaat en de cultuurtoerist. De politiek heeft zich de kunst toegeëigend en tot onderdeel van het politieke steekspel gemaakt. De Braziliaanse cultuur is een rijke smeltkroes, maar minder bekend zijn de eigentijdse Braziliaanse kunstvormen die beïnvloed zijn door de westerse cultuur. Deze avond hebben we een traktatie van twee Braziliaanse toptalenten die verrassen. Guilherme Miotto laat zich inspireren door urban dans en deconstrueert deze op intelligente wijze met wereldkampioen breakdance Menno van Gorp. Samir Calixto brak vorig jaar definitief als maker door en neemt de literaire klassieker Paradise Lost van John Milton als uitgangspunt. Brazilian culture is a rich melting pot, however, contemporary Brazilian art forms influenced by western culture are less well known. This evening we will be treated to two surprising Brazilian top talents. Guilherme Miotto is inspired by urban dance, which he intelligently deconstructs with world-champion breakdance Menno van Gorp. Samir Calixto made his definite breakthrough as a creative artist last year and now takes John Milton’s literary classic Paradise Lost as a point of departure. Absorbing knowledge and being inspired by passionate speakers. That’s what the CaDance Super Lectures are all about! This year, a conspicuous number of choreographers sought inspiration in the great classics of the world’s literature. The outsider, the farewell, mortality, good and evil, courage, morality. Inspired by these great subjects, they create a new story in their own language that speaks to the imagination. CaDance invites gifted speakers to give lectures about a number of these classics and the great epic stories from world history: The Odyssey, L’Etranger, Paradise Lost, Mahabharata. Come and be inspired! And visit the performance afterwards to see the form in which the choreographers have explored the subject.

Paradise Lost

The Odyssey

De 17e-eeuwse Engelse dichter John Milton deed er vijf jaar over om de meer dan 10.000 versregels van het dichtwerk Paradise Lost te schrijven. Londen was uitgegroeid tot een van de grootste steden in Europa en wetenschappers en dichters als William Shakespeare kenden grote successen. De religieuze spanningen woekerden echter stevig voort door de afscheiding van de Anglicaanse kerk. In die tijd schreef de succesvolle dichter en politiek activist John Milton het verhaal over de zondeval van de mens: Adam en Eva die verleid worden door de gevallen engel Satan, waardoor ze verdreven worden uit het Paradijs. De grote schuldvraag, goed vs kwaad en de verbeelding van de zondige mens heeft de kunstwereld eeuwenlang beïnvloed. En ook tegenwoordig maken filmregisseurs, theatermakers, choreografen, songwriters en beeldend kunstenaars nog steeds kunstwerken over de lotsbestemming van de mens, de verloren onschuld en het verloren paradijs.

Wie kent het verhaal van de Odyssey van Homerus niet? De reis van Odysseus na de Trojaanse Oorlog heeft menig Hollywood-regisseur geïnspireerd. In het ca. 12.000 versregels tellende dichtwerk van 800 v. Chr. is Odysseus de grote held, de bedenker van de list met ‘het paard van Troje’. Hij haalt hiermee wel de woede van de zeegod Poseidon op de hals, die hem daarna in zijn terugreis naar huis in alles tegenwerkt. Odysseus moet vele tegenslagen overwinnen, terwijl hij maar één wens heeft; naar huis terugkeren. En dat is precies het thema dat vele kunstenaars al eeuwenlang fascineert. De reis naar huis als symbool voor de zoektocht naar jezelf. Langzaam verdwijnen voor Odysseus tijdens zijn reis de materiële en sociale bindingen. Angst en verlangens maken plaats voor rust en de zekerheid dat je altijd jezelf hebt om naar terug te keren.

The 17th century English poet John Milton took five years to write the more than 10.000 lines of verse that comprise the poetic work Paradise Lost. London had become one of the largest cities in Europe, and scientists and poets such as Shakespeare achieved great success in this period. But religious tensions spread because of the separation of the Anglican Church. It was against this historic background that the successful poet and political activist John Milton wrote his story of man’s fall from grace: Adam and Eve who were seduced by the Fallen Angel Satan, which led to their banishment from Paradise. The issue of guilt, good vs evil, and the portrayal of man as sinful have influenced the world of the arts for centuries. And even in our time, film directors, theatre makers, choreographers, song writers, and visual artists still make works of art concerning the fate of man, lost innocence, and the lost paradise.

The story of Homer’s Odyssey is almost impossible not to know. Odysseus’ journey after the Trojan War has inspired many Hollywood film directors. In almost 12.000 lines of verse written around 800 B.C. the story is told of Odysseus, the great hero who conceived the tactic known as ‘the Trojan Horse’. In doing so, he incurred the wrath of Poseidon, god of the sea, who then does everything in his power to keep him from returning home. Odysseus must overcome much adversity, though he has but one wish: to return home. And this is precisely the theme that has fascinated artists for centuries. The journey home as a symbol for the search for one’s self. For Odysseus material and social connections slowly fade away during his journey. Fear and desire make place for peace and security in the knowledge that you always have yourself to return to.

Supercolleges / Super Lectures Mahabharata

L’Etranger

De Indiase verhalen zijn een onuitputtelijke bron van inspiratie voor kunstenaars. Het epos Mahabharata is het op twee na grootste literaire werk van de wereld en is in zijn meest uitgebreide versie ongeveer vier keer zo lang als de Bijbel. De beroemde regisseur Peter Brook maakte er een iconische voorstelling en film over. De Mahabharata heeft naast een mooi verhaal, ook een filosofische diepgang en een rijke spirituele traditie. Het richt zich op de vier levensdoelen van de mens: Kama (begeerte), Artha (rijkdom), Dharma (spiritualiteit) en eindigt in het ultieme menselijke levensdoel, Moksha (bevrijding). Zoals bij dit epos, fungeren veel verhalen in India nog steeds als moreel kompas voor hoe je je gedraagt, de protagonisten als rolmodellen. Een Supercollege over grote verhalen die in deze tijd nog gelden als spiegel voor actuele sociale dilemma’s.

De hoofdpersoon uit L’Etranger (1942) van Albert Camus, Meursault, doet precies het tegenovergestelde van wat verwacht wordt van een held. Hij is een vriendelijke man, maar staat onverschillig tegenover het leven. Wanneer hij op een dag een man doodschiet, weigert hij zich te verdedigen. Zijn gebrek aan berouw wordt hem zwaar aangerekend: hij krijgt de doodstraf, omdat hij zich niet voegt naar de conventies van de maatschappij. De in Algerije geboren Franse schrijver Albert Camus wordt gezien als een existentiële schrijver, maar zijn wereldbeeld ontwikkelde zich vanaf eind jaren ’30 steeds meer richting het absurdisme. Volgens hem leeft de mens in een absurde, zinloze en onbegrijpelijke wereld en is een held iemand die de zinloosheid van het leven erkent en toch wil voortleven. Meursalt ziet bij het naderen van zijn dood de kans om werkelijk vrij te zijn door de verantwoordelijkheid voor zijn eigen leven te nemen. Een Supercollege over de rol van de buitenstaander als metafoor voor de kunstenaar die ons een spiegel voorhoudt.

Stories from Indian mythology are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists. The epic Mahabharata is the world’s second largest literary work and in its most elaborate version approximately four times as long as the Bible. Famous director Peter Brook created an iconic stage play and a movie based on this epic. The Mahabharata possesses next to a wonderful story, a great philosophic depth and a rich spiritual tradition. It focuses on man’s four main life-goals: Kama (desire), Artha (wealth), Dharma (spirituality), and ends in the ultimate of human goals, Moksha (liberation). As is with this epic, many stories in India still function as a moral compass concerning behaviour; the protagonists as role models. A Super Lecture about great stories that in our time still function as a mirror for current social dilemmas.

The main character in L’Etranger (1942) by Albert Camus, Meursault, does exactly the opposite of what is expected of a hero. He is a friendly man, but indifferent towards life in general. When at one point he shoots a man, he refuses to defend himself. His lack of remorse is severely held against him: he is sentenced to death, because he refuses to conform to the conventions of normal society. Born in Algeria, the French author Albert Camus is seen as an existential writer, though his worldview developed more and more towards absurdism from the late thirties on. Camus was of the opinion that man lives in an absurd, pointless, and incomprehensible world; a hero in such a world is someone who accepts the senselessness of life and yet wants to go on living. Faced with his impen ding death, Meursault sees a chance to be truly free by taking responsibility for his own life. A Super Lecture about the role of the outsider as a metaphor for the artist who holds up a mirror to the rest of society.

Last year the Brazilian-Dutch choreo grapher Samir Calixto left a shattering impression with his 4 Seasons, that made us aware of our mortality to the sounds of Vivaldi. For his new performance Paradise Lost, he sought inspiration in John Milton’s epic poem of the same name from 1667, about man’s fall from grace and his banishment from Paradise. With a strong physical intensity, characteristic of Calixto’s work, apparently conflicting forces drive the dancers on. Light, dark, good, evil, holy and godless. Long enough until we see humanity as we know it: fragile, complex and mortal.

Vorig jaar maakte de BraziliaansNederlandse choreograaf Samir Calixto een verpletterende indruk met zijn 4 Seasons, dat ons op de klanken van Vivaldi bewust maakte van onze vergankelijkheid. Voor zijn nieuwe voorstelling Paradise Lost liet hij zich inspireren door het gelijknamige epische dichtwerk uit 1667 van John Milton, over de zondeval van de mens en zijn verbanning uit het Paradijs. Met een sterk fysieke intensiteit, eigen aan het werk van Calixto, drijven ogenschijnlijk tegengestelde krachten de drie dansers voort. Licht, donker, goed, kwaad, heilig, goddeloos. Net zolang totdat we de mensheid zien zoals we haar kennen: fragiel, complex en sterfelijk.

The young Jasper van Luijk is taking the Dutch dance scene by storm with powerful performances featuring interpersonal relationships. The diptych Savages was inspired by great literary works such as 1984 by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. With live music, an ingenious lighting set up, and six fascinating dancers, a society emerges at a micro-level. The ideals of rationality over emotion and the individual’s subordination to the collective prevail. Inevitable conflicts arise, and mutual manipulations become increasingly extreme. Jealousy, discomfort, and loneliness slowly drift to the surface.

De jonge Jasper van Luijk verovert de Nederlandse danswereld met sterke voorstellingen waarin intermenselijke relaties centraal staan. Het tweeluik Savages is ge誰nspireerd op grote literaire werken als 1984 van George Orwell en Brave New World van Aldous Huxley. Met live muziek, een ingenieus lichtspel en zes fascinerende dansers ontpopt zich een samenleving op microniveau. Het ideaal van de ratio die over de emotie heerst en waarin het individu ondergeschikt is aan het collectief, viert hoogtij. Er ontstaan onvermijdelijk conflicten en de onderlinge manipulatie neemt steeds extremere vormen aan. Afgunst, ongemak en eenzaamheid komen langzaam bovendrijven.

Nederlands Dans Theater 1 Strike Root shows a wide-ranging assortment of choreographers from Nederlands Dans Theater. No less than three productions are presented, two of which are world premieres. Marco Goecke immerses us in his surprising and challenging dance language. The young choreographer Mehdi Walerski presents a raw atmospheric work, which gives a contemporary take on virtuosity. The choreographers duo Léon & Lightfoot reprises Safe as Houses from 2001; a magical ballet of ‘disappearance and reappearance’, inspired by the Chinese Book of Changes, the I Ching.

Following the success of the location project 5x5 from 2013, CaDance now presents 4x4 / the fellowship of the dance. Cast in the form of a journey, four choreographers set to task of giving shape to the festival’s theme The Excellence of Form at unique locations around the stately Lange Voorhout. In former city palaces and houses of the nobility with their rich history, voices of the past can be heard, conjured forth by contemporary dance. The trip starts in the legendary Hotel des Indes, where the fellowship will gather and you can enjoy a coffee buffet first. 4x4 offers you a new perspective on dance, the city, and its illustrious past.

Now Rise Up premieres, a solo made specially for the multiple world-champion breakdance Menno van Gorp. In a shadowy twilight world, he bravely resists death. But what if he gives in? In an unusual cocktail of urban dance, performance art, and contemporary dance, body and spirit interlock. Time pushes ever onward and gravity gradually strengthens its grip on the body. Young ambitious dancers discover and develop their talents at Crosstown. They work at the highest level with professional Korzo choreographers such as Samir Calixto and Shailesh Bahoran. In Troublemakers, Calixto combines the fresh, anarchistic energy of the dancers with the powerful drive of the surprisingly contemporary sounds of Mozart’s Symphony nr. 25. In Tribe the versatile hip-hop dancer and choreographer Shailesh Bahoran, together with the dancers, explores the degree of influence of the outside world on their way of life. With b-boying, popping and locking, and a healthy dose of originality, they try to stay true to themselves and retain their authenticity.

De koning van Ithaka wil na de Trojaanse oorlog niets liever dan terugkeren naar huis, maar hindernissen en wonderlijke ontmoetingen stellen hem op de proef. The performance The Unreality of Time by Marina Mascarell was the big surprise of the 2013 CaDance Festival, and was praised for its enchanting images, languid poetry, and powerful nuance. In “it is like a large animal deep in sleep”, she now reacts to the current state of society. Surrounded by fifty cardboard boxes, three dancers ask what we can do to really exercise influence in society. They invite you to contribute. “it is like a large animal deep in sleep” is a poetic performance about basic but essential daily activities, and about the great philosophical issues such as the wish to be free. It appeals to the senses to stay awake and alert and not to remain numb.

De voorstelling The Unreality of Time van Marina Mascarell was de grote verrassing van CaDance 2013 en werd geroemd om de betoverende beelden, lome poëzie en krachtige nuance. Nu reageert ze in “it is like a large animal deep in sleep” op de huidige staat van onze maatschappij. In 1873, the first emigrants from India thought they were travelling to ShriRam, the land of God. When the hatch of their ship the Lalla Rookh opened in Surinam, it was a shock to see the face of a Creole for the first time in their lives. The face of a devil, so they thought. They were put to work as contract workers, also called ‘kantraki’s’. With this story as a point of departure, six dancers led by Shailesh Bahoran present a challenging mixture of hip-hop, Indian dance, and funk styles such as popping and breakdance on stage. A poignant performance about the search for one’s identity in a strange country.

In 1873 dachten de eerste emigranten uit India dat ze naar Shri-Ram, het land van God, zouden reizen. Hun schrik was groot toen het luik van het schip Lalla Rookh openging in Suriname en ze voor het eerst in hun leven in het gelaat van een Creool keken. Een duivel, dachten ze. Ze werden te werk gesteld als contractarbeiders, oftewel ‘kantraki’s’. Met deze geschiedenis als uitgangspunt brengen zes dansers onder leiding van Shailesh Bahoran een uitdagende mix van hiphop, Indiase dans en funkstijlen als popping en breakdance op het podium. Een ontroerende voorstelling over de zoektocht naar je identiteit in een land dat je vreemd is.

Choreographers and dancers Külli Roosna and Kenneth Flak left the warmth of the city behind them and set off with their crew for the rugged highlands of Norway. There they made part one of a trilogy, Wild Places : : Mountain. They sought inspiration in the Deep Ecology theory by Norwegian philosopher Arne Næss, which proceeds from a deep connection between man and nature. Out of their wish to take responsibility for nature instead of dominating it, Roosna and Flak present a rough no man’s land in the theatre.

Choreografen en dansers KĂźlli Roosna en Kenneth Flak lieten de warmte van de stad achter zich en vertrokken met hun crew naar de woeste hooglanden van Noorwegen. Daar maakten ze Wild Places : : Mountain, het eerste deel van een trilogie. Hiervoor lieten ze zich inspireren door de theorie van Deep Ecology van de Noorse filosoof Arne NĂŚss, die uitgaat van een diepe verbondenheid tussen mens en natuur. In hun wens verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor de natuur, in plaats van deze te overheersen, brengen Roosna en Flak het ruwe niemandsland naar het theater.

The main character of the book L’Etranger (The Stranger) by Albert Camus chooses to ignore all forms of social etiquette. He shoots a man to death without remorse. The inscrutability of this antihero is the point of departure for the multimedia dance performance, in which Emio Greco performs himself, full of power and emotion. He wants to be free to choose his own path, but his freedom of movement is restricted to an inhuman degree. Thousands of led-lamps become his antagonist and transform dance into projections, shreds of text and sound. The result is a performance about morality, social pressure and the will to survive. What does one man’s struggle say about society as a whole?

De hoofdpersoon in het boek L’Etranger (De Vreemdeling) van Albert Camus lapt alle sociale omgangsvormen aan zijn laars. Hij schiet zonder motief een man dood en heeft geen spijt. De ondoorgrondelijkheid van deze antiheld is het uitgangspunt van de multimediale dansvoorstelling waarin Emio Greco, vol kracht en emotie, zelf danst. Hij wil vrij zijn om zijn eigen pad te kiezen, maar zijn bewegingsruimte wordt beperkt tot een onmenselijke maat. Duizenden ledlampjes worden zijn tegenspeler en zetten dans om in projecties, flarden van tekst en geluid. Een voorstelling over moraliteit, sociale druk en de wil om te (over)leven. Wat zegt de strijd van één man over de samenleving als geheel?

The passionate duo of Linda Kapetanea and Jozef Frucek established the group RootlessRoot. Their activist and unpredictable performances are assured of an enthusiastic reception internatio nally. As proof of this, dancers from all over the world flew to The Hague to attend their workshop Fighting Monkey in Korzo. In the solo W Memorabilia (Phaedra’s Laboratory) archetypical, mythological heroines such as Phaedra and Medea seep through into the body of Kapetanea. Accompanied by raw sounds produced in real-time, she portrays their suffering, but also their secret desires. Like the ancient Greek heroines driven by fate, Kapetanea creates her own world, only to destroy it.

The young Korean talent Ahn Soo-young presents his totally original Swan Lake at CaDance. He gives a serious groove to Tchaikovsky’s classic. With popping and locking, hip-hop, power b-boying, and contemporary dance moves, he puts the swans back into the spotlights. Regal, enchanting and infectious. Ultranormaal is for anyone who dances in front of a mirror or sings under the shower. The gentlemen of 155 won the first André Gingras Award last year, and now, under the motto of dance like nobody’s watching!, they show what can happen on the dance floor if we don’t have to live up to anyone’s expectations.

The Senegalese ‘Battling Siki’ won the world title in boxing in Paris 1922, and became the first black boxing champion ever. He moved from Rotterdam to New York, where he was gunned down at the age of 28. Though his life story is unknown in his own country, the Senegalese dancer Alioune Diagne brings this boxing hero to life again. Siki not only fought in the ring, he also battled the prevailing racist zeitgeist. He dashingly fought for equal rights in Europe and the US in the nineteen twenties. In an impressive mixture of dance and boxing, Diagne creates a dialogue between himself and Siki, between then and now.

De Senegalees ‘Battling Siki’ wint in 1922 de wereldtitel boksen in Parijs en is daarmee de eerste zwarte bokskampioen ooit. Hij verhuist van Rotterdam naar New York, waar hij op 28-jarige leeftijd wordt neergeschoten. Zijn levensverhaal is onbekend in zijn eigen land, maar de Senegalese danser Alioune Diagne brengt deze boksheld opnieuw tot leven. Want Siki vocht niet alleen in de ring, maar ook tegen de toen heersende racistische tijdsgeest. Hij streed vol bravoure voor gelijke rechten in het Europa en de VS van de jaren twintig. In een indrukwekkende mix van dans en boksen creëert Diagne een dialoog tussen hem en Siki, tussen toen en nu.

The Spanish choreographer Iván Pérez is well known for his poetic, clear dance style, which is stripped down to its bare essentials. He now employs this style to interpret the way we relate to each other in our complex world. Our world, where everything is connected, but boundaries can easily be transgressed. Presented as an adaptation of his previous work Attention, the doors are closing! created in Moscow, three dancers use every corner of the theatre surrounded by the audience. Tirelessly and affectionately, they exhaust perspectives of personal space and use their bodies in search for unity. Even though the boundary that separates intimacy from intimidation is fragile, the dancers push the limits anyway. Tenderly they discover new possibilities for human connectedness.

De Spaanse choreograaf Iván Pérez staat bekend om zijn poëtische, tot de kern afgepelde, heldere dansstijl. Deze zet hij nu in om de onderlinge verhoudingen in onze complexe wereld te duiden. Onze wereld, waarin alles verbonden is, maar waarin grenzen ook snel overschreden kunnen worden. In de bewerking van zijn in Moskou gemaakte werk Attention, the doors are closing! benutten drie dansers, omringd door het publiek, elk hoekje van het theater. Onvermoeibaar en vol genegenheid putten ze alle mogelijkheden van hun persoonlijke ruimte uit en zetten ze hun lichaam in om eenheid te bereiken. En hoewel de grens tussen intimiteit en intimidatie kwetsbaar is, wordt deze door de dansers zo ver mogelijk opgerekt. Op tedere wijze ontdekken ze nieuwe mogelijkheden voor menselijke verbondenheid.

The award-winning Joeri Dubbe has for years been furthering his career as a choreographer. Especially for CaDance, we compiled a triple-bill with a solo, a duet, and a trio. In the breathtaking Kitsune – a fox from Japanese mythology that can take on a human form – rituals are the point of departure. Three masked dancers pose in golden light and transform from animal to human and back. They ominously flow together, collide, and then separate again. Their movements are alienating, almost animal, yet they manage to reveal human vulnerabilities. Prospect is an adaptation of Dubbe’s impressive debut creation Prospect Future from 2009. He will also show a solo created for dancer Sarah Murphy, a pre-study to his new piece Infant.

De prijswinnende Joeri Dubbe timmert al jaren succesvol aan de weg als choreo graaf. Speciaal voor CaDance stelden we een triple-bill samen van een solo, een duet en een trio. In het adembenemende Kitsune – een vos uit de Japanse mythologie die menselijke gedaantes aan kan nemen – zijn rituelen het uitgangspunt. Drie gemaskerde dansers poseren in het gouden licht en transformeren van dier naar mens en terug. Onheilspellend vloeien ze samen, komen in botsing en verwijderen zich weer. Ze bewegen vervreemdend, dierlijk bijna, maar weten toch de menselijke kwetsbaarheden bloot te leggen. Prospect is een bewerking van Dubbe’s indrukwekkende debuutcreatie Prospect Future die hij in 2009 maakte. Verder toont hij een solo voor danseres Sarah Murphy, een voorstudie voor zijn nieuwe productie Infant.

Amos Ben-Tal established OFFprojects in 2012. This collective, consisting of former dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater, presents live events compelling to the audience. Might is not just an ordinary performance. At the 2013 Museumnacht a part was performed in the cellars of the former The Hague City Hall and now it premieres as a full-length theatre performance. The audience is seated on stage amidst a labyrinth of walls and screens. The space changes and reveals and conceals the phenomenal performers. Each spectator experiences his or her own performance with personal encounters. A dazzling and sensual trip, where we can refresh ourselves with a soft intimacy.

In 2012 richtte Amos Ben-Tal OFFprojects op. Dit collectief, bestaande uit voormalig dansers van Nederlands Dans Theater brengt live events waar het publiek in meegezogen wordt. Ook Might is niet zomaar een voorstelling. Eerder was een onderdeel al tijdens de Museumnacht 2013 te zien in de kelders van het voormalig Haagse Stadhuis en nu gaat het als avondvullende voorstelling in premiĂ¨re. In een labyrint van muren en schermen zitten we op het podium. De ruimte verandert en onthult en verbergt de fenomenale performers. Elke toeschouwer beleeft zijn eigen voorstelling met persoonlijke ontmoetingen. Een zinderende, sensuele trip waarin we ons kunnen laven aan een zachte intimiteit.

Kalpana Raghuraman, who grew up in the Netherlands but is also deeply rooted in the Indian culture, presents a double-bill of contemporary Indian dance. Tightrope Walker was created specially for Sooraj Subramaniam, one of the best performers of Indian dance in Europe. In this modern solo, a man escapes from his suffocating environment, in which the eye of the other is ever-present; always judgemental. Even if that ‘look’ only really exists within you. In the audacious Kandam Ostinato, three Bharatanatyam dancers are affected by the exciting repetitive composition Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt. With fast and tightly executed footwork and slow elegant arm movements, they are carried along on the rhythm’s pulse.

Kalpana Raghuraman, in Nederland opgegroeid maar ook diep geworteld in de Indiase cultuur, brengt een double-bill van hedendaagse Indiase dans. Tightrope Walker maakte ze speciaal voor Sooraj Subramaniam, een van de beste vertolkers van de Indiase dans in Europa. In deze eigentijdse solo breekt een man los uit zijn verstikkende omgeving, waarin de blik van de ander altijd aanwezig is. Oordelend. Ook als die blik in werkelijkheid alleen maar in jezelf bestaat. In het gedurfde Kandam Ostinato worden drie Bharatanatyam danseressen gegrepen door de opzwepende, herhalende compositie Canto Ostinato van Simeon ten Holt. Met snel en strak voetenwerk en trage, sierlijke armbewegingen laten ze zich meevoeren op de hartslag van het ritme.

From the moment you get out of bed, everything goes wrong. You trip over your toys; you tear your pants; you’re late getting to school. Oops! You’re having one of those days that nothing goes right. With his direct humour and candor, Arthur Rosenfeld created a dance performance with three young multi-talented performers. They tumble, fall, roll, and trip their way through the world. In a playful mixture of dance, music, rap, circus, and slapstick, we see a day filled with virtuoso failure and comic misunderstandings.

Tijdens CaDance wordt de André Gingras Award voor de tweede keer uitgereikt. De prijs is vernoemd naar en geïnspireerd door de eigenzinnige choreograaf André Gingras (1966-2013), die bekend stond om zijn innovatieve gebruik van verschillende danstalen. De André Gingras Award wordt dan ook toegekend aan choreografen die zich buiten de gebaande paden durven te bewegen. Het breakdancecollectief 155 (toen nog iLL Skill Squad) won vorig jaar de prijs en na hun voorstelling wordt wederom een talentvolle choreograaf geëerd met deze Award. De prijswinnaar ontvangt €3000,en een bijzondere sculptuur, gemaakt door decorontwerper Ascon de Nijs. This festival the André Gingras Award will be presented for the second time. The prize was named after and inspired by the strong-minded choreographer André Gingras (1966-2013), who was known for his innovative use of different dance languages. The André Gingras Award will be awarded to a choreographer who has dared to explore off the beaten path. The breakdance collective 155 (formerly known as iLL Skill Squad) won the prize last year and after their show another talented choreographer will be honoured with this award. The winner receives €3000,- and a unique sculpture created by set designer Ascon de Nijs.

Sinds 2013 is het BNG Cultuurfonds partner van Korzo en wordt er jaarlijks een maker uitgeroepen tot BNG Excellent Dans Talent. Deze prijs ondersteunt toptalent op het gebied van choreografie en bestaat uit een bedrag van €45.000 om een tournee te financieren: de Excellent Talent Tour. Korzo brengt tijdens het CaDance Festival de verschillende partners in talentontwikkeling bijeen. Politici, private financiers, collega-instellingen, publiek en kunstenaars gaan met elkaar in gesprek én vieren gezamenlijk de nieuwe generatie makerstalent van Haagse bodem. Het onderwerp is Den Haag als stad voor kunstenaarstalent en het stedelijk makersklimaat. Speciaal te gast is cultuurwethouder Joris Wijsmuller. The BNG Cultuurfonds has been partners with Korzo since 2013 and an artist is selected yearly as BNG Excellent Dance Talent. This prize supports top talent in the field of choreography and consists of a money prize of €45.000 earmarked to finance a tour: the Excellent Talent Tour. During the CaDance Festival, Korzo brings together various partners in talent development. Politicians, private financiers, fellow institutions, artists and the public enter into dialogue and celebrate together the new generation of creative talent based in The Hague. Moderne fysica, de oerknal en dans zorgen in dit filmische totaalkunstwerk voor een inspirerend verhaal over het ontstaan van de kosmos. Every Monday evening: Open Lessons given by choreographers at work at the Korzo studios. January and February the building will be taken over by choreographers preparing to present their latest works in the CaDance Festival. Ontdek de avantgarde van de moderne dans uit Afrika, maak kennis met de artiesten, vier feest op het mythische schip ‘Bou El Mogdad’, neem een kijkje achter de schermen van het festival en geniet van wat Saint-Louis te bieden heeft tussen rivier en oceaan.

Van 3 tot 7 juni vindt voor de 8ste keer het hedendaagse dansfestival Duo Solo Danse plaats in cultuurstad Saint-Louis in Senegal. U kunt hierbij aanwezig zijn en deel uitmaken van de bruisende sfeer van het festival door deel te nemen aan deze prachtige reis vol kunst en cultuur. Woensdag 11 februari organiseert Korzo met Duo Solo Danspartners een speciaal arrangement met informatie over het festival en de reis, inclusief diner en aansluitend de voorstelling ‘Siki’ van choreograaf Alioune Diagne, oprichter van het festival Duo Solo Danse. De centrale festivalkassa is in het Korzo theater aan de Prinsestraat 42. Hier kunt u kaarten kopen voor alle locaties, behalve voor het Lucent Danstheater.
