Sounds from the Cypher

Afgelopen najaar lanceerde Korzo de podcastserie Sounds from the Cypher. Hierin gaan hosts Sachi Rihal en Therese Sahlin in gesprek met makers, docenten en performers over de definitie van urban en gaan ze dieper in op de verschillende werelden van hun dansstijlen.

Last year, Korzo launched the podcast series Sounds form the Cypher. Hosts Sachi Rihal and Therese Sahlin talk with creatives, teachers, and performers about the definition of urban and delve deeper into the different worlds of their dance styles.

Urban

Gast sprekers: Leal van Herwaarden, Sheree Lenting Sleutelfiguren: Lloyd Marengo, Mellery Garcia Turbi, Aruna Vermeulen, King Charles

Het woord ‘urban’ wordt vaak gebruikt als een verzamelnaam voor bepaalde dansstijlen, maar hoe correct is het gebruik van dit woord? Vanuit de danscommunity komen er gemengde reacties naar voren als het om het woord ‘urban’ of ‘urban dans’ gaat. In de eerste aflevering bespreken we met Leal van Herwaarden en Sheree Lenting het woord ‘urban’ en het gebruik hiervan. Naast deze twee experts, komen ook de meningen van andere bekende sleutelfiguren uit de scene aan bod in deze open dialoog.

The word ‘urban’ is often used as a collective term for certain dance styles, but is this word used correctly? Responses to the term ‘urban’ or ‘urban dance’ vary in the dance community. In the first episode we discuss the word ‘urban’ and its usage with Leal van Herwaarden and Sheree Lenting. In addition to these two experts, opinions of other key figures in the scene are presented in this open dialogue.

Popping

Gast sprekers: Lloyd Marengo, Hassani le Couvreur

Is het een mens of is het een robot?! Dat soort gedachten kan je krijgen als je de dansstijl Popping ziet. Popping is een zeer gedisciplineerde dansstijl waarbij de controle van je spieren van top tot teen centraal staat. Voor deze aflevering gaat Korzo het gesprek aan met Popping artiesten uit twee verschillende generaties. Deze sprekers hebben zowel vanuit de battle scene als vanuit de theaterwereld een bekende naam; dit levert een een interessante interactie op.

Is it human or is it a robot?! That’s the impression you could get from watching the dance style Popping. Popping is a very disciplined dance style that features absolute controle over all the body’s muscles. In this episode Korzo talks to Popping artists from two different generations. These two guest speakers are familiar names from the battle scene as well as the theatre scene; this results in an interesting interaction.

Waacking en Vogue

Gast sprekers: Sarada Sarita, Shahin Damka

De dansstijlen Waacking en Vogue worden vaak in één adem uitgesproken alsof het één dansstijl is. “Maar het lijkt toch op elkaar?!”. Niets is minder waar! Daarom gaan wij in deze aflevering van Sounds from the Cypher in gesprek met twee belangrijke sleutelfiguren van deze dansstijlen: Sarada Sarita en Shahin Damka stonden vooraan toen Waacking voet aan de grond zette in Nederland, gevolgd door de opmars van de Nederlandse ballroomscene Mede dankzij hun inzet als docenten en performers hebben zij beiden vanuit de eerste generatie van deze dansstijlen een weg vrijgemaakt voor velen. Sarada Sarita heeft het zelfs een niveau hoger getild met haar theatervoorstelling Q4: Quantified en de opkomende Waackingserie The Quintessentials~Q5 waarin ook Shahin schittert.

The dance styles Waacking and Vogue are often mentioned together as if they were one and the same dance style. “But they look so alike?!”. Nothing could be further from the truth! That’s why in this episode we talk with two key figures in these dance styles: Sarada Sarita and Shahin Damka were first in line when Waacking came to the Netherlands, followed by the advance of the Dutch ballroom scene. Due to their involvement as instructors and performers, they both paved the way from the first generation in these dance styles for many who followed. Sarada Sarita even pushed it to the next level with her theatre performance Q4: Quantified and the coming Waacking series The Quintessentials~Q5 where Shahin also shines as a performer.

Breaking

Gast sprekers: Diogo Nogueira, Conni Trommlitz, Zino Schat

Breakdance, bboy, bgirl, break of breaking. Wat het ook is, let’s break it down! Samen met de bboys van Fractal Collective Zino en Conni en Diogo van Heavy Hitters betreden we in deze aflevering van Sounds from the Cypher de vurige battle scene van breaking. Het is interessant dat al deze bboys ook breaking in de theaterwereld hebben gebracht. En wist je dat Breaking vanaf de Olympische Spelen van 2024 in Parijs een officiële olympische sport is? Verwacht een interessante dialoog over breaking vanuit de battle scene, theater en een vooruitblik op de Olympische Spelen.

Together with the b-boys of Fractal Collective, Zino and Conni, and Diogo from Heavy Hitters, we enter the fiery battle scene of breaking in this episode. It is interesting that all these b-boys also brought breaking into the theatres. And did you know that from the Paris Olympic Games in 2024 Breaking will be an official olympic sport? You can expect an interesting dialogue on breaking from the battle scene, theatre, and a preview of the Olympic Games.

Cypher is vanuit de (underground) danscommunity een cirkel van dansers waarin verbinding en uitwisseling centraal staan. Dit is waar dansers vrij zijn om zich te bewegen en te uiten. Met de podcastreeks Sounds from the Cypher nemen we je mee in deze veilige ‘cypher’ om kennis uit te wisselen en nieuwe inspiraties op te doen.

Cypher is a term from the (underground) dance community, meaning a circle of dancers where connection and exchange are central. Here, dancers are free to move and express themselves. Sounds from the Cypher takes you into this safe and secure cypher to exchange knowledge and get new inspiration.
