STEEL ARENA There used to be a barn at the place where 30 World Cup matches will take place this year. The natives of Košice called the old stadium like that due to its clear resemblance to a farm building where the local team was playing the Top Czechoslovak League and later also the Slovak League. In the year 2006, they opened a brand new, dignified stand that meets the requirements for organizing international sporting events, tournaments, as well as social events. The Steel Arena has already hosted the World Ice Hockey Championship; that was in the year 2011. The Steel Arena is named after Ladislav Troják, a native of Košice. He was the first Slovak in the Czech-Slovak national team and the first Slovak hockey world champion. He died young, 34-year-

old, at a plane crash over the English Channel when he and his teammates tried to get to a match in England. Due to the bad weather and the strike of Air France employees, he and his teammates had to take a private plane. His native street, Radlická Street in Košice, was renamed to Troják Square in his honour.

Dobšinská Ľadová Jaskyňa Ice Cave

The Dobšinská Ľadová Jaskyňa Ice Cave is one of the largest ice caves in the world and, with regard to its ice volume, it is the world top leader. The total volume of ice in the cave is estimated at 110,000 m3, which is about two million fully refuelled tanks of an average passenger car. The Dobšinská Ice Cave is one of the first in Europe to be electricity-lit, and this was as early as in the year 1887. In 1890, the Great Hall hosted a concert in honour of Karl Ludwig Habsburg. Until 1946, even public skating was allowed in the cave. The surroundings of the Dobšinská Ice Cave are perfect for unique experiences, but also beautiful photographs capturing eye-catching natural scenery. The cave is located in the Slovak Paradise National Park, in one of the most beautiful natural areas of Slovakia. Its unique scenery is created by beautiful river canyons, legendary waterfalls, but also karst plains. Tourists like discovering this wonderful piece of our land in ever greater numbers. Although it is a preserved area, it is not so difficult to explore it because of the tangled hiking trails. The Via Ferrata in the Kyseľ Gorge is a great attraction for more experienced tourists. Palcmanská Maša, a water reservoir near the village

of Dedinky, is created on the upper reaches of the Hnilec River. With an area of approximately 85 hectares, it is the largest water area of the Slovak Paradise National Park. In addition to swimming, it is worth to try water sports or boating. In the surroundings of Palcmanská Maša, there are also a number of accommodation facilities where you can sit and sleep before or after a challenging hike. One should definitely climb Geravy. From Dedinky, through the Zejmarská Gorge, it takes about two hours to get to the Geravy Gorge and back. The Dobšinská Ice Cave is located on the western edge of the Košice Region. In addition to the picturesque village of Stratená, which is surrounded by beautiful na-

ture, the interesting technical sights of the surroundings are also worth seeing. Set in the natural landscape, they create an unconventional contrast and are object of admiration of all those who see them - albeit in pictures. The iconic stone railway bridge is also known as the Chmaroš Viaduct. It is over 110 meters long and 18 metres high. It has been on the Červená Skala Margecany track for almost a hundred years. Near the viaduct, there is the famous Telgárt Loop. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and genius loci of this place

during the World Cup! Košice Self-governing Region and Košice Region Tourism have prepared for you the exceptional trip through the region. There is another place not far away which you cannot miss, although administratively it is in the region of Banská Bystrica. It is the spring of the Hron River, the second longest Slovak river, which flows into the Danube after another 298 kilometres. The spring can be reached within a few minutes by car.

Krásnohorská Jaskyňa Cave Looking for an adrenaline cave experience? The Košice region's answer is clear: Krásnohorská Jaskyňa Cave. Moving around in it is also associated with a dose of adrenaline, as admission is only permitted when accompanied by experienced guides and with a proper speleological equipment. Until recently, the cave was also included in the Guinness Book of World Records. In the Hall of the Giants at the end of the tour route, there is a majestic, up to 34-metre-high Dripstone of Rožňava Cave Explorers. It weighs about 2,000 tons and "puts on" 200 kilograms on weight every year. Not even in the tropics grow the dripstones that fast, where the conditions for them are several times better. Rožňava is dotted with interesting historical places. Right in the heart of the city, it is worthwhile to arrive at the marble monument to the patron of all the poor ones - Francisca Andrássy built in 1905. The Watchtower located

It is not just caves and huge natural resources that are scattered across the Gemer Region. There are also many architectural attractions that certainly deserve your attention. Three kilometres away of Rožňava, there is a Mansion in Betliar. The mansion was built at the beginning of the 18th century, it is most strongly connected with the important aristocratic Andrássy family. What is unique is that its original furnishings have been preserved in that mansion. The Slovak “Taj Mahal” the Andrássy Mausoleum in Krásnohorské Podhradie - is the absolute architectural gem. This Art Nouveau monument was built in the early 20th century. Its uniqueness in the territory of Slovakia is underlined by the author's

signature, as unlike other Art Nouveau monuments, this one is the result of the creative work of the Munich Jugendstil. Just 28-year-old Richard Berndl created the construction design. The Mausoleum was inspired by the tomb of King Theodoric located in Ravenna, Italy. From Krásnohorské Podhradie, it is just a short walk to the city of Rožňava. There is also something to admire here. For example, the Mining Museum, which dates back to 1902 (restoration of activity after World War II in 1956), provides the opportunity to discover the underground world of miners. Its exhibition includes the Andrássy Picture Gallery, but it is in Krásnohorské Podhradie, or the Exposition of Nature of the Slovak Karst and adjacent areas in Rožňava.

in the middle of the Rožňava Mining Square is situated at a height of 38 metres. Among the sacral monuments, let us mention the St. Anna Franciscan Church and the adjoining monastery or the architecturally engaging Kalvin Church.

Gombasecká jaskyňa Cave The Gombasecká Jaskyňa Cave is famous for its thin sintered quills, which reach up to three meters in length. In the cave, we may find a hall with a unusual name of Hiroshima. The name is related to the dominant stalagmite, which resembles an atomic mushroom. Another impressive area is the Marble Hall, but also the Ladislav Herényi Hall, in which thin straws evoke the image of stone rain.

The Gombasek area, a natural relaxation area, is a kind of "pre-cave" of the cave - which is extremely large. In the area, you will find ruins of the Pauline Monastery with a Gothic church, which had stood there from 1371 until it was destroyed by the imperial army in the 17th century. When entering the complex, there is an old smithery workshop with the remains of the blast furnace. The Gombasecká Jaskyňa Cave also has the lowest ice cave of the temperate zone Silická Ľadnica Cave. It is one

of the largest natural sights in the Slovak Karst and its rock wall in the entrance area reaches a depth of up to 90 metres. From the landscaped terrace, you may see the cool interior of the cave, where modest ice decorations are maintained even during the summer heat. It is interesting to note that the cave had been inhabited several times before the glaciation - the findings from it come from the Neolithic, the Bronze Age, and the Latene period. Even, the fireplace embers found point to a possible settlement in the young Paleolithic.

Ochtinská Aragonite Cave The descent tunnel to the entrance to the Ochtinská Aragonite Cave resembles subway escalators. The only difference is that as a true hiker, you have to walk those 104 stairs on your own. But it is worth it because in the cave you will find the treasures of the underground world - three generations of aragonite, the oldest of which is almost 140,000 years old. Aragonite is calcium carbonate and forms various formations in the cave, the most precious being the so-called coral-like iron flower. The most beautiful place in the cave is the Milky Way Hall, where white aragonite bunches on the ceiling create the impression of the stars of our galaxy. In the nearby village of Ochtiná, there is a Romanesque-Gothic church, which is older than the first written mention of the village itself. The church

had originally been - for three centuries - Catholic, but in the 16th century the whole villages of the Štítnik and Slaná Rivers were converted into the Protestant

faith. Since the Protestants did not get used to having saints displayed in their churches, they painted the whole temple white across the frescoes, which de facto protected them for several hundred years. They were discovered during the renovation of the late 19th century. The bell from the church was taken by soldiers during World War I in the year 1916. This is how the raw materials for cannons were also provided.

or Koceľovce. The temple of Koceľovce was built in the first half of the 14th century and medieval paintings influenced by the Italian school have been pre served on the walls. Here, too, the valuable frescoes have been preserved due to the fact that the Protestants, after taking over the church in the 18th century, painted it white. The church hides several interesting places that are reminiscent of long centuries of our history.

We can also find the historical legacy of the Protestant religion in other villages in the area, such as in Gočaltov

Originally a Catholic church in Štítnik, it is Evangelical today. On the site of the present sacristy, there stood

the first, originally singlenave church of the 13th century. The church boasts many exceptional features: it has the oldest organ in Slovakia (1492), an even older Gothic bronze baptismal font of 1454, and more than 200 m2 of wall paintings. They depict mostly religious themes and have been preserved in two to three layers. You may also come across the Monument to the Victims of the Slovak National Uprising in Štítnik. There is also an old Water Castle in the village built by the Bebek family.

Domica Cave An underground cruise? Even such a unique trip of course, if the weather is favourable - is offered by the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage in the Košice Region. Moreover, Domica is the only cave in the region that opens up the season as early as in February and ends up in December and is therefore open for 11 months of the year. The cave is home to 16 bat species, with the Southern Horseshoe Bat with a 1000to 2000-membered colony being the largest one.

Near the Domica Cave, there is the village of Kečovo. It lies on the red tourist route, which starts in Domica and leads to the village of Dvorníky-Včeláre. Right behind Kečov, under the hill Maliník, there is the National Nature Preserve of Kečovské Škrapy, which is our biggest scrape field on the limestone hillside. If you like adrenaline rides, visit one of the largest indoor go-kart halls

in Central Europe on your way to Domica. The area of the Karting Arena Plešivec is 4,500 m2 large and the track length is about 600 metres. And if you prefer outdoor experiences, Gemer offers the opportunity to take a buggy ride through the beautiful landscapes. The unique ride off-road environment through Gemer is provided by Side by Side Expeditions.

Jasovská Jaskyňa Cave Almost two dozen types of bats have their home in the cave, which is closest to Košice from among the UNESCO accessible caves. Its beneficial effect on the respiratory tract is regularly used by patients suffering from respiratory diseases and allergies - the Jasovská Jaskyňa Cave is one of three caves in Slovakia that is used for speleotherapy. It became famous due to many archaeological finds; one of them includes the oldest documented inscription on the cave wall in Slovakia dated 1452, capturing the victory of the troops of Jan Jiskra of Brandýs at the Battle of Lučenec. The Jasovská Jaskyňa Cave was opened as the first one in Slovakia in 1846. The ruins of the Turňa Castle, which is a popular tourist destination, are also connected with ancient history. The castle is located at Turňa nad Bodvou, on a karst hill 375 meters high, which once was the administrative centre of the Turňa Stool. If you climb up the hill, you can

take a look at the panorama of Turňa nad Bodvou, the village of Háj and the Hájska Dolina Valley, Jasovská Plateau or Zádielska Plateau. The Premonstratensian Monastery with the Church of St. John the Baptist is worth seeing in Jasov. It is a Baroque complex of buildings of great historical and artistic value. One of the most precious libraries in Slovakia with about 80,000 volumes of books is located in the Monastery. The Monastery garden is also unique and features remarkable examples of garden architecture and culture of the second half of the 18th century.

A water-driven blacksmith's workshop technology is a historic facility, usually built by watercourses, where the flowing water energy has driven blacksmith blowers and bellows to blow air into the furnaces. The first "hámre" - blacksmith workshops in Medzev, had been in operation since the 14th century, the 17th century was known for the smiths' guilds, and in the 19th

century there were more than 100 "hámors". Looking for accommodation near the Jasovská Jaskyňa Cave? In addition to Košice, you may also bet on something unknown - Granary in Jablonov nad Turňou. It is also referred to as the "Tuscany of Slovakia", a medieval granary where you can find accommodation and enjoy meals prepared by the medieval traditions and recipes.

This also includes authentic tastes, capturing the uniqueness of the moment. And that is why the original hockey beer is brewed in the Košice region on the occasion of the Ice Hockey World Championship 2019.

And what about the hockey beermat?

this is a real pre-match warm up and at the same time an after-match relief. The hockey beer was prepared in the Rožňava brewery Kaltenecker according to the recipe of Padre Crat Brews. It is a light lager of India Pale type that combines the classic with the modern.

Vihorlat Primeval Forest Few people are lucky enough to survive for a century. But far above human possibilities is what nature can do. We can better understand our own finiteness in the Vihorlat Primeval Forest, surrounded by up to 240-year-old beeches. A not easy accessibility, but also the systematic protection of this area has contributed to the fact that the beech forest habitat is functioning here in its original harmony. Looking down on the ground, you may easily see tiny green stems and leaves growing from dead fallen trunks. This is the endless cycle of life in the Vihorlat Primeval Forest, close to the third largest natural lake in Slovakia - the Morské Oko Sea Eye Lake. It is the Morské Oko mountain lake that is the entry point to the Vihorlat Primeval Forest, but a walk around this lake

also has its magic. If you are an active tourist, take a climb from the Morské Oko to the Sninský Kameň Rock. It is from its flat bricks that you can enjoy a beautiful view of the vast forests of Vihorlat and the Morské Oko Sea Eye. Both Vihorlat and the Morské Oko Sea Eye have been listed at the UNESCO World Heritage List for over ten years. One more interesting stop-by: Musem of Guitars in Sobrance. It maps the complete development and production of electrophonic guitars in Czechoslovakia after World War II. There are a thousand exhibits

Perhaps not so well-known attraction of Vihorlat are the so-called Vihorlat nar-

row railway tracks. A hundred years ago, the Vihorlat forests were patch-worked by a narrow-gauge railway that served to transport timber, coal, stone and iron products to Michalovce and Uzhgorod. They also used the track partly to transport local nobility and intelligentsia. So in the forests of Vihorlat, you may still find the embankments and remains of rails that operated until the early 1970s.

Ruská Bystrá The Temple of the Transfer of the Relics of St. Nicholas is located in the beautiful surroundings of Sub-Vihorlat forests, in the small village of Ruská Bystrá. Spiš Castle One of the largest castle complexes in the world is not only the most photogenic location of the Košice region, but also the pride of Slovakia. The Spiš Castle spreads over 4 hectares and the oldest mention of it dates

back to 1249. It originally served as a border fortress of the Early Feudal Kingdom of Hungary, later having become a noble residence. On the northeast slope of the castle hill, there is a gigantic (100 x 100 metres) stone pattern - a geoglyph. It depicts a horse on a Celtic coin found during

15

archaeological research at the Spiš Castle. Along with the Castle and Spišské Podhradie, the Spiš Chapter is one of the entries at the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. It is also referred to as the "Little Vatican" because this church town at Spiš has played an important role in the spiritual life of the whole region. At the end of the 18th century, it became a bishopric and in the 19th century the oldest

teaching institute in Hungary was established here. In the vicinity of the Spiš Chapter, there are remains of the Way of the Cross probably built in the 17th century. In this territory, it is one of the oldest calvaries and it is interesting that its chapels are distributed to remind Jerusalem at the time of Jesus Christ. Thus, the Spiš Jerusalem is a replica of the Jerusalem Calvary, known as Calvario Jerusalem.

Brada - the Gray Beard. A few decades ago, the geyser had spilled water up to two metres in height, but today's pressure no longer enables this, with the water just

rising to the surface and forming a kind of a bubbling pond. The Baroque Chapel of the Holy Cross has been standing alone on the top of the Gray Beard since 1675.

Church of the Holy Spirit The church, which has for centuries been preserved in its almost intact medieval form, is located near the Spiš Castle. The tower of an ancient church of the 13th century is covered by a wooden dome of an unconventional onion-like shape. The original wooden coffered ceiling burned down centuries ago, but there was also an interesting architectural intervention made after the fire. Two naves were created by adding an octagonal vault column to the centre of the church, which can be considered a world-unique object. The oldest object in the church is the

late Romanesque stone baptismal font of the 13th century, and wall paintings of the 13th to 15th centuries are also precious. When in Žehra, do not bypass the local part of Hodkovce and pop-in the manor house there. It used to belong to the Spiš Castle - the Csáky family. It gave the castle its historical significance in the 18th and 19th centuries, when there was a large French park in addition to the construction works. You can visit the Csáky's Lounge from 9:00 to 16:00 hrs, but also visit the French park, the chapel built in 1803 and the Csáky family cemetery. Near Spišské Podhradie, there is a travertine hill known as Sivá
