THE SCIENCE OF NAMES NAMES BY THE NUMBERS Unraveling what it really is that defines a name for us. Let's look at the numbers to truly see how names impact our lives.

NUMBER OF PEOPLE WITH NAMES THAT RHYME: 62,935 In the recent US Census 16,308 different rhyming first and last names, including Florence Lawrence, Doris Morris, and Nellie Kelley. Names like this, which might be considered more melodic, seem to be more prevalent among females. Four of the top five names are female (all with first name Mary), including the most common: Mary Perry. The most common male name is John Hogan at number 2. If you’re not sold that this is a bona fide rhyme, Paul Hall and John Hahn follow at 6 and 7, respectively. There were also 158 Ronald McDonalds on the list, though in 2014. John Johnson, followed by William Williams. Similar to Johnson and Williams, almost all the last names

are patronymic. Their original meaning was to denote someone is “son of [insert father’s name].” The top 25 include patronymic last names that are English

(ending in son, like Robert Robertson), Welsh (often

ending in s, like Edward Edwards), Danish (ending in

NAME HALL OF FAME EXTRAORDINARY NAMES You will truly be dumbfounded, amazed and perplexed by these names. From world record names to outright hilarious name changes to the history of common everyday names, these are the members of the name hall of fame.

I CHANGED MY NAME TO.....

Bacon Double Cheeseburger

IT WAS PROBABLY TOO MANY DRINKS IN THE PUB

That's Mr. Cheeseburger to you. A British man formerly known as Simon Smith has changed his name to something slightly more carnivorous: “Bacon Double Cheeseburger.” The change was inspired, like many bad ideas, by an evening of drinking. “It was the culmination of probably too many drinks in the pub where there was a conversation about names,” Cheeseburger told the Evening Standard. “Bacon Double Cheeseburger was pretty much the first thing that came up. Everyone loves bacon don’t they?” Cheeseburger, 33, told the newspaper his new moniker is “the most ridiculous thing” he and his friends could think of. “My friends were quite supportive of anything that makes me look silly, as good friends are.” Cheeseburger said his new name hasn’t affected his career as a consultant in the oil and gas industry. “My work speaks for itself... people keep hiring me,” he told the BBC. But that’s slightly misleading. He acknowledged he uses the name he was born with on his resume and doesn’t inform employers his real name is Cheeseburger when he’s applying. “I usually drop that bombshell after the contracts have been signed,” Cheeseburger said. The name, he said, has advantages and at least one downside. Once word got out that a man really named himself Bacon Double Cheeseburger, fast food outlets came calling, including Byron Hamburgers, a British-based burger chain.

NAME OF THE UNKNOWN

JOHN & JANE DOE

Originated from Old English common law The John Doe custom was born out of a strange and long since vanished British legal process called an action of ejectment. Under old English common law, the actions landowners could take against squatters or defaulting tenants in court were often too technical and difficult to be of any use. So landlords would instead bring an action of ejectment on behalf of a fictitious tenant against another fictitious person who had allegedly evicted or ousted him. In order to figure out what rights to the property the made-up persons had, the courts first had to establish that the landlord really was the owner of the property, which settled his real reason for action without him having to jump through too many legal hoops. Frequently, landlords named the fictitious parties in their actions John Doe (the plaintiff) and Richard Roe (the defendant), though no one has been able to find the case where these names were first used or figure out why they were picked. The names don’t appear to have any particular relevance, and it might be that the first names were chosen because they were among the most common at the time. The surnames, meanwhile, both reference deer—a doe being a female deer and roe a Eurasian deer species common in Britain. They might also have been the actual names of real people that a particular landlord knew and decided to use. Unfortunately, we just don’t know.

Hubert Blaine Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff Sr. His great-grandfather composed the surname in the 19th century, when German Jews were required to take a second name, and he offered this explanation of his name’s meaning:It tells a story of a wolf-killer, a resident of a stonehouse in a village, whose ancestors were conscientious shepherds whose sheep were well fed and carefully guarded against attack by ferocious enemies and whose ancestors 1,200,000 years before the first earth man, in a space ship made with tungsten and seven iridium motors and using light as a source of power, started a long journey across interstellar space, searching for a star around which was an inhabitable planet where they could establish a new race of intelligent mankind and where they would live long, happy lives and be free from attack by other intelligentsia from the outer space from whence they came. All of that is to say that if you want his autograph, be prepared to wait a while and to go through a few pieces of paper.

MY NAME IS...

RONALD MCDONALD AUBURNDALE, MA

.

There is no established relationship between clowns and fast food. Sure, people portraying clowns may order it in their free time, but you don’t go to the circus to see Chuckles dance around in oversized red shoes, honk his red nose, and chow down on a cheeseburger. Yet everyone blindly accepts Ronald McDonald, one of the most famous clowns—and people—in the world, as the mascot for McDonald’s. Granted, this is partially because Ronald has held the role for over 50 years. I’d bet some people barely register that he is a clown, considering the goofy, nose-honking behavior clowns are generally known for. But what inspired McDonald’s to make a clown the face of their fast food empire? Funnily enough, it was another clown: Bozo. Bozo the Clown was the star of several television shows during the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s (the character was a franchise, so local TV stations across the country could produce their own Bozo-themed shows—fitting, since McDonald’s would also find success through franchises).

Drew looks at me. I fake a smile so he won't see That I want and I'm needing Everything that we should be. I'll bet she's beautiful, that girl he talks about, And she's got everything that I have to live without. Drew talks to me. I laugh 'cause it's just so funny That I can't even see Anyone when he's with me. He says he's so in love, he's finally got it right. I wonder if he knows he's all I think about at night. He's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar. The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star. He's the song in the car I keep singing. Don't know why I do. Drew walks by me. Can he tell that I can't breathe? And there he goes, so perfectly. The kind of flawless I wish I could be. She better hold him tight, give him all her love, Look in those beautiful eyes and know she's lucky 'cause He's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar. The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star. He's the song in the car I keep singing. Don't know why I do. So, I drive home alone. As I turn out the light I'll put his picture down And maybe get some sleep tonight. 'Cause he's the reason for the teardrops on my guitar. The only one who's got enough

MY NAME IS...

TAYLOR SWIFT LUBBOCK, TX Taylor Swift is a 26-year-old man from Lubbock, Texas. He is a student at Texas Tech University and is all too familiar with the pains of sharing a name with the many other Taylors out there — one of whom happens to be a pop icon. “My father insisted on [naming me] Taylor, and I guess he wasn’t aware of how many Taylors were going to be born in the next couple of years,” Taylor Swift, who was born in 1992, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. Before male Taylor Swift found out about singer Taylor Swift, he says he was indifferent about his name. With “Taylor” being so common, he often went by “Swift,” which he liked quite a bit.

“Rumors spread around that there was a Taylor Swift there,” male Swift recalls of that summer at camp. “All the counselors were aware of it.” From that summer on, celebrity Taylor Swift’s life would be a roller coaster of incredible achievements, award show mishaps, and sold-out concerts. For male Swift, it would be a ton of awkward social situations. For example, in March 2009, when male Swift decided to get a Facebook account: Female Swift had won a Grammy for Album of the Year for her sophomore album, Fearless, just a month before. Apparently, a lot of Facebook users wanted to use the pseudonym Taylor Swift because when male Swift tried to sign up for the social media platform, Facebook wouldn’t allow him to use his real name. “I tried contacting Facebook,” male Swift says. “I tried emailing them and calling them, but I never got a response. I eventually had to use my middle name, Reese.”

OUR NAME IS...

DONALD DUCK SYRACUSE, NY

Donald Duck won 291 votes in Sweden's general election two weeks ago, up 37% from his showing in the 1982 election but not enough to elect him to Parliament, the vote count showed Monday. About 26,000 voters, or 0.47% of the electorate, cast their ballots for unofficial candidates--real or unreal--in the Sept. 15 election that returned Prime Minister Olof Palme's Social Democrats to power.

When I was a young girl growing up in Glendale in the mid-'50s I used to spend weekends at a pet feed and supply store in Montrose. A man was often there chatting with the owner of the store and he would delight in hiding behind the large feed sacks and talking like a duck to entertain me and any other child in the store. The owner always used to tell me that he was Clarence Nash, the voice of the real Donald Duck. I never believed him, but nevertheless always looked forward to my Saturday visits there and the affable, cheery man who did animal voices for us all. It wasn't until last year when The Times did an article on Clarence Nash that I recognized him as the man at the feed store almost 30 years ago. It filled me with sadness to read of his passing recently.

MY NAME IS...

GUENTHER FRANKENSTEIN

People used to call us asking if the

MONSTER was home.

He said the names included Dr Leslie Doctor and Dr Thoulton Surgeon, a vet in Connecticut, Dr Payne, a plastic surgeon in Ohio, Les Plack, a dentist in San Francisco and Priti Manek, a doctor in Florida. “And one of the funniest, Dr Sumey … is likely to invite more than his fair share of lawsuits from disgruntled patients,” he said. He said one advantage was that these people are not likely be forgotten. Retired airman Stan Still, 76, from Cirencester, Glocs, said his name had been “a blooming millstone around my neck my entire life”.

It's pronoun CO-BURN. The CK is Silent. There must be tremendous embarrassment every time they have to introduce themselves to anyone, especially to a crowd. He added: "Their name will be with them for life and what may be quirky and fun for a toddler might be regretted terribly when that person becomes older or even a grandparent perhaps. The spokesman said the researchers also found hilarious examples in the United States of people who have “brilliant names linked to their professions.
