Myanmar Contemporary Art Exhibition October 9 - 30, 2010
6th Anniversary of Suvannabhumi Art Gallery
Presented by Suvannabhumi Art Gallery
We Welcome You Again Suvannabhumi Art Gallery is proud to present another ‘Exhibition of Myanmar Artists’ at the Chiang Mai University Museum and Art Centre. The first one, to celebrate the 3rd Anniversary of Suvannabhumi’s opening, was held in July 2007 where the works of 26 artists were shown.
Mar Mar or Elizabeth Chit as she known to her friends and clients, has committed herself to promoting artists from Myanmar. As a country which not so long ago emerged out of self-imposed Socialist isolation, the Myanmar artists, in spite of their strong talents and dedication to their work, are lost in the international art market. It takes people like Mar Mar to rally the artists and present their works to the world.
This year, to commemorate its 6th Anniversary, Suvannabhumi presents the works of 25 Myanmar artists. They are all famous and successful painters, well regarded in Myanmar as well as internationally. All of them have participated in annual international
shows and museum presentations, as well as various solo exhibits arranged for them by various international galleries. Of these artists, Kin Maung Yin and Win Pe are the second-line leaders of Myanmar’s modern art movement. The first leaders were U Kin Maung (1911-1983) of Mandalay and U Baji Aung Soe (1924-1990) of Yangon. Kin Maung Yin is best known for his purity of colours, especially in his non-objective works while Win Pe. In this exhibition you will see Kin Maung Yin’s clear and translucent colours and the strength of Win Pe’s lines and brushwork. The other artists in this show, in alphabetical order, are: Aung Myint, who recently changed from doing simple lines to more complicated and colourful work; Kyee Myint Saw, whose urban night scenes capture the mood of the city and the mystery of darkness; Lu Minn’s stark shadows almost, but not quite, overwhelm his shimmers of lights; Mg Di, who has a passion for enigmas within colours; Min Wae Aung, who has a deep understanding of tranquillity that comes though abandoning attachments; Min Zaw, who captures vitality with a few quick lines and lively colours; Moat Thone, whose whimsical structures makes his work unique; Moe Nyo, who portrays aloofness, grandeur and loneliness with his Myanmar scenes; Myat Kyawt, who shows playful and delightful themes; Nay Myo Say, whose inherent love for traditional motifs is always a foundation of his works; NCS (Nyein Chan Su), who uses startlingly vivid colours and wild but controlled brush strokes; Paw Thame, who now lives in the United States but has not for a moment let go of his passion for Things Myanmar; Pe Nyunt Way, who feels a deep connection to the country’s past; Po Po, avant-garde artist, usually at the forefront of change but
with a modesty that allows his works, and not him, to be known; San Oo (MS), a man of few words producing works that shout of his talent; San Minn, who makes strong social commentaries on canvas; Sandar Khine, the only woman artist in the show, with her powerful portrayals of the female mystique; Sonny Nyein, one of the earliest, and few modern sculptors of Myanmar and one whose works of purity in form are bold and aggressive; Sein Myo Myint, a famous photographer who now presents his views through brush and paint; Tin Maung oO, whose quick lines catches the changes of daily life in an instant; Win Pe Myint, whose paintings are like meditation sessions; MPP Ye Myint, who is a master of time and space; and Zaw Win Pe, last but not least, who evocates the power of nature from his canvases. As you will see their works are strong and vibrant, but none of them has lost sight of their Myanmar identity.
