NEXT HUB 16,800 SQ FT Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator

DESIGN INTENT Design two-story education space for nontraditional learners that relies on a variety of seating to accommodate the needs of users. The hub's name and location is provided, but student must develop a brand. Students are instructed to design the spaces inspired by four zones: Public/Alone, Public/Together, Private/Alone, and Private/Together.

CONCEPT Individual

Washington, D.C.

The space for NEXT hub is built upon the original city plan for Washington D.C. that was designed by Pierre Charles L'Enfant, focusing on the way the geometric shapes in the plan interact with intentional green space. L'Enfant organized broad diagonal avenues that were overlain on a grid of wide streets. Thus, creating a web of tree-lined avenues that showcase great vistas and lead to powerful focal points and open public spaces. . Finally, the intersections of various diagonal avenues are punctuated with landscaped circles and squares, while their intersections create triangular and trapezoidal lots and parks.

SOLUTION The juxtaposition between the urban elements and the biophilic focal points can be seen through the use of a live wall and natural elements, contrasting geometric patterns and the strong use of line. Research supports the right of occupants to have choice and control over their environment.

Steelcase's Classification of Spaces can be seen throughout the design, providing the occupants with choice and control of their environment. With a variety of furniture options and the ability to rearrange spaces makes NEXT Hub efficient and flexible design. In addition to going along with the concept, biophilia is incorporated in to the space through natural materials and access to daylight and views.

HOTEL EZRA

HOTEL EZRA 32,550 SQ FT

Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator

4-Person Team

Asheville, NC

DESIGN INTENT Collaborate with teammates to design first, sixth, and eighteenth floors of an 18-story boutique hotel in a city of the students' choosing. Develop an overall concept for hotel. Derived from the overall idea, more specific concepts will be used to design the restaurant, bar, spa, and rooftop bar. Custom branding must be provided for the hotel and each of the amenities the hotel offers.

CONCEPT Appropriation art is the practice of artists using pre-existing objects or images in their art with little transformation of the original, in hopes that the viewers will bring all of their original associations with the image to the artist's new context, be it visual, literary, musical, or performing arts. Hotel Ezra showcases the traditional architecture, contemporary art, and youthful energy seen in the city. Appropriation art heavily influenced the design of Hotel Ezra, and each area of the hotel is represented by a different form.

SOLUTION Use research of concept, location, hospitality design, etc. to design a functional space where guests can relax in luxury. Apply rich materials and residential aspects to create the boutique-hotel experience. Promote branding in each space while staying connected to the overall concept.

He was one of the architects that established the Biltmore Estate, an Asheville favorite. Next, Della and James is a laid back farm-to-table restaurant inspired by The Gift of the Magi by Asheville author, O. Henry. This tale is appropriated from a story in the Bible and O. Henry's rendition tells of the love and sacrifice of Della and James Finally, Spa Alina is named after Alina, a scientist who discovered the benefits of Halotherapy. Spa Alina takes this popular holistic practice and incorporates into a more innovative space.

Helsinki, Finland

DESIGN INTENT Generate a restaurant design that embodies the culture and aesthetics of the country assigned. The city, name, and brand are for the two designers to determine. An exterior rendering must be provided in the overall design of the restaurant.

CONCEPT Kerätä is located in Helsinki, Finland's southern capital that sits on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. In Finland it is customary to brew a pot of coffee for any visitors, expected or unexpected. So Kerätä, which means "to gather" in Finnish, provides a welcoming, upscale environment for locals and tourists alike. The minimalistic space is inspired by the communal culture of the Finnish sauna, glass igloos, and the Northern lights lights,,

SOLUTION Pairing clean lines and cool tones with earthy materials and glass, visitors get a high-end feel without losing touch with natural materials. Kerätä features igloo-like geometry, colorful light fixtures, and cool tones, which are contrasted by the warm tones from the wood slats.

DESIGN INTENT Create an open workspace for a crystal company that relies on a variety of seating and spaces to accommodate the needs of users. Student must develop company name, location, and brand, so that it can be incorporated into the space.

CONCEPT Intents is a crystal company that aims to connect consumers with the earth in an ethical way. Intents represents the intentions that are present in both healing crystals and good design. Just like crystal grids, Intents believes that when their employees effectively work together, the company is stronger and more energized.

SOLUTION This "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" type mantra plays a large influence on the design. In addition to promoting employee synergy, the open office represents the transparency that Intents stands for. Geometric shapes in the design highlight the crystal grid seen in the Intents logo. Finally, because healing crystals are considered holistic practice, natural elements are incorporated throughout the design, including crystals and stones that have a positive impact on the energy in the space.

PRODUCT DESIGN The term Komorembi, which has no simple English translation, roughly translates from Japanese to the scattered light that filters through when sunlight shines through the trees. Komorembi soothes observers and creates a deep connection with nature. The Komorembi Lounge exemplifies this idea by utilizing a rattan panel to allow sunlight to filter through the back, while the natural materials and low seat connects the user to nature.
