Watchmaking is as much a part of the Vallée de Joux as its forests and lakes. Like the first watchmakers to set up in the valley, David Candaux has made his home and atelier under the same roof, in an old stone farmhouse that once belonged to the Capts. Another distinguished family of watchmakers and creators, in 1875, of the most complicated pocket watch of its day. Himself, the son and grandson of master watchmakers from the valley, David Candaux feels compelled to preserve and perpetuate this legacy.

Already an experienced master watchmaker, David Candaux continues to perfect his understanding of traditional horology by restoring antique watches and clocks. The watches he handcrafts in his atelier are informed by the ingenuity and skills of these generations past, transformed by David into beautiful, contemporary pieces. It takes courage and determination to sit down at the bench and, part by part, step by step, transform an idea into a living, breathing timepiece, working through difficulties and accepting the challenge of a new direction. David's philosophy is simple: to combine twenty-first-century precision and reliability with beautiful, traditional hand-finishing.

David Candaux was born and raised in the VallĂŠe de Joux, an area of Switzerland synonymous with traditional watchmaking, where the finest timepieces originate. Two elements have helped shape David's world view. First, the natural beauty of the region. Second, his family. As the son and grandson of master watchmakers, David grew up surrounded by watchmaking talk and tools. He soaked up the craft from an early age, barely tall enough to see over his father's workbench. Then, at just 14, he sat down at the bench himself to begin his journey. More than 20 years later, having cemented his knowledge and expertise during a successful career with several well-respected manufactures, he has chosen to pursue his personal vision of twenty-first-century Haute Horlogerie with a series of exceptional timepieces.

One could say that watchmaking is a part of David Candaux's DNA. As a third-generation watchmaker hailing from La Vallée de Joux. Daniel was a watchmaker in Patek Philippe's Vallée de Joux complication workshop. Today, he works with David to make his vision of artisanal watchmaking a reality.

The David Candaux Masterpiece Collection 1740 represents the pinnacle of handcrafted watchmaking from the Vallée de Joux. It carries on the tradition and dedication of previous generations, including David's own father, Daniel, and close friend, neighbor and mentor, Philippe Dufour. Indeed, both men are members of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI). Each watch in the collection requires years of research and development to master complications in radical new ways, evidenced by the multiple watchmaking patents that David Candaux holds.

DESCRIPTION Symmetry and Asymmetry The 1740 plays on symmetry and asymmetry. The case has a smooth, round shape, with further symmetry in the arrangement of the tourbillon opposite the hours and minutes sub-dial. This contrasts with the inclination of the dial and of the movement bridges. The resulting aesthetic is unique, functional and designed with the wearer's comfort in mind. Dial The dial showcases this asymmetric design. Raised at 12 o’clock and lowered at 6 o’clock, it tilts towards the wearer, thus making it easier to read the time. It combines 3 patents and 8 design registrations. Power Reserve The power-reserve mechanism is patented by David Candaux. The two series-mounted barrels are joined by a compact system that makes efficient use of space. One barrel is for winding the mainspring, the other for unwinding. This guarantees an accurate indication of the remaining power. "Bi-plan" Inclined Flying Tourbillon The flying tourbillon cage, which is made from titanium, is mounted on a ceramic ball bearing and inclined at 3° to the case. The balance wheel is then inclined at 30° to the tourbillon cage. This "bi-plan" construction ensures a continual change in the position of the cage and the regulating organ, thereby optimizing the tourbillon's capacity to average out the effects of gravity or shocks that might affect proper functioning. The tourbillon makes one complete rotation in 60 seconds and offers constant amplitude in every position. This, combined with the constant supply of energy from the twin barrels, ensures accurate timekeeping. Regulating Organ The regulating organ is of David Candaux's own design and manufacture. This is something of a rarity in an industry where the majority of brands buy in their regulating organs from outside suppliers. Escapement The escapement is developed and made by David Candaux. It features non-equidistant locking surfaces, a typical construction for the Vallée de Joux, as opposed to the more common equidistant surfaces of industrially-produced escapements.

The Magic Crown has been tested and proven over 20,000 times before gracing the wrist. It is waterproof and shock resistant. The strategic positioning of the crown allows enhanced comfort for daily use.
MAINTENANCE The experience of owning a timepiece created by D. Candaux is also an entrance to a privileged and exclusive relationship supported by a complete and exemplary service. Every D. Candaux timepiece is entirely handmade by one of the best watchmakers in Switzerland, with the utmost respect for the traditions of the VallĂŠe de Joux. All D.
