Enriching our community through people, parks and programs! That is the Mission Statement of the Keller Parks and Recreation Department. What does that mean exactly? It is a blueprint for how we conduct our day to day affairs. The employees of the City of Keller Parks and Recreation Department want to enrich your experiences in our parks and through our programs. How do we do that? Well, it starts with great customer service. We pride ourselves on going above and beyond for our customers. Who are our customers? You are! If we are not exceeding your needs and expectations, we want to know so that we can correct it. The City of Keller is currently working on an update to our Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan. Our current plan was adopted in 2007, and our city has changed quite a bit since then. Part of that Master Plan Update was a citizen survey conducted in 2014. Our residents informed us that the number one thing that we currently have that they want more of is hike and bike trails. We currently have over 23 miles of hike and bike trails, and we plan to add over 24 more miles. Our residents also informed us that the number one thing that we don’t currently have that they want is a dog park. Keller’s first dog park, K9 Pointe, opened on November 12th. This dog park is strategically located in The Parks at Town Center near The Keller Pointe. Another item that our residents wanted was for us to reinvest in our existing parks. We recently completed a renovation and expansion project at The Keller Pointe, and a renovation to Bear Creek Park. A few of our other parks that are in the discussion for development include Milestone Park, Overton Ridge Park, Keller Sports Park and Northeast Park. Our Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is currently researching the best ways to develop each of these parks for the betterment of our citizens. Lastly, we offer numerous programs for our residents and visitors. We offer eighteen special events throughout the year, ranging from Fishing For Fun to live concerts to our Christmas Tree Lighting. Our Senior Citizens Activities Center offers programs and events for the young at heart. Whether taking an exercise class or traveling the world, our Senior Center offers it all. We have several youth associations that provide recreational leagues in soccer, softball, baseball and rugby. And we have a family recreation center, The Keller Pointe, which has everything from workout equipment to basketball to swimming. We are proud of our award-winning Parks and Recreation System, and hope that you utilize and enjoy the many components that make it up. Until next time,

WE’RE AWARD
WINNING
WE WANT YOUR
BEST SHOT
In 2016 our Parks and Recreation Department received recognition as a Tree City USA for the 23rd consecutive year. To be recognized our city must meet Arbor Day Foundation’s and National Association of State Forester’s established four standards. Standards include a Tree Board, current tree care ordinance, community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita and an arbor day observance and proclamation. Our department works diligently throughout the year to ensure that we are exceeding these standards. The Growth Award is awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation to recognize higher levels of tree care by participating Tree City USA communities. The Growth Award highlights innovative programs and projects as well as icreased commitment of resources to urban forestry. This is our 7th year to receive this award!

THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF A PARKS & RECREATION SYSTEM
W hat were the main factors you used in deciding where to live? Was it
job location, community safety? How about the school system? Of course! There are multiple factors that people take into consideration when deciding to put down roots. So how about your home’s proximity to a park, the library or a community center? Maybe they weren’t the first things that came to mind, but once you were in the car driving through neighborhoods, what made the one you chose better than the ones you marked off your list? Was it an amazing amenity center, large trees in the front yard, the fact that you could walk out of your back door and be on a running trail? Or was it that sitting on the back porch, you could see the sun rise over lush parkland? “Parks provide intrinsic environmental, aesthetic, and recreational benefits to our cities. They are also a source of positive economic benefits,” according to the American Planning Association. “They enhance property values, increase municipal revenue, bring in homebuyers and workers, and attract retirees.” But you already knew that, right? The National Recreation and Parks Association recently released its Americans Engagement with Parks Survey, an annual study that probes Americans’ use of parks and the key factors that drive that use. The study found that on average, Americans visit parks 29 times a year — and that the majority of Americans identify parks and recreation as an important service provided by their local government. Americans surveyed also said they would pay up to 10 percent more for a home that was within walking distance of a
park! Here in Keller, we take the benefits of Parks & Recreation seriously, with more than 23 miles of trails and hundreds of acres of developed parkland. Tree City In fact, Keller is in its 23rd year of being nationally recognized as a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation. For seven years, we have even gone above and beyond that standard, earning the foundation’s Growth Award in addition to our Tree City USA honor. And in 2015, we spent more than $137,000 on our community forestry to ensure a scenic parks system that improves residents’ quality of life. The 55+ Crowd When we’re talking about residents’ quality of life, we mean all of our residents. The NRPA study also highlighted how seniors and retirees decide where to locate, and it should come as no surprise that their top two considerations were scenic beauty and recreational opportunities! About 20 percent of Keller residents are over the age of 55, according to 2010 Census data. That’s why our Keller Senior Activities Center is one of the most busy and vibrant community amenities around, offering 1,600 programs and trips to the community every year, including 36 day trips, two domestic, and two international trips open to anyone aged 18 and up. Are you serious about Parks & Recreation? Keep up with everything we’re up to through the website and our social media. You can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. See you around the parks!

USING PARKS
TO
RELIEVE STRESS
How stressed are you? You. Yes, you! Seriously: What is your quality of life? Are you one of those people who gets up at 6 a.m., checks your phone, drinks your coffee as you’re dashing around to find your missing keys, all the while yelling at your kids to hurry up or they’ll be late for school? Next you’ll find yourself standing in line for coffee you won’t get the opportunity to finish as you rush to work, get off some time after you were originally supposed to, decide whether to order take out or run to the store for a rotisserie chicken, pick up the kids and run them to various activities, determine if you should exercise, or just sit down to your favorite show while folding laundry, washing dishes, getting bags packed for the following day and wondering when the last time you showered was. If so, you’re not alone. Americans are notorious for overbooking, overworking and overextending, and the result is a pandemic of people who are exhausted both mentally and physically. Guess what? We have a cure.
Tonight, instead of running around trying to decide what takes the higher priority on your checklist (that you never can seem to catch up on), go to the park. Walk around. Sit on a bench and watch the squirrels, or ducks, or turtles. Try a pickup game of basketball or check out our new pickleball courts at Bear Creek Park. Have a picnic. Or, if you dislike animals or aren’t keen on dirt, grass or the outside in general, check out The Keller Pointe, the Keller Senior Activities Center or the Keller Public Library. We at the City of Keller and specifically the Parks and Recreation Department are dedicated to providing spaces, programs, activities and events that have a positive impact on your life. It is our goal to offer opportunities for everyone, to bring the community together and to create an environment for socialization, relaxation, and physical and mental wellbeing. Got questions? Give us a call, shoot us an email or, even better, come find us in one of our parks or facilities. We love what we do and are passionate about serving you!
