Our Parks and Recreation Department received recognition as a Tree City USA for the 24th consecutive year. To be recognized our city must meet Arbor Day Foundation’s and National Association of State Forester’s established four standards. Standards include a Tree Board, current tree care ordinance, community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita and an arbor day observance and proclamation. Our department works diligently throughout the year to ensure that we are exceeding these standards. The Growth Award is awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation to recognize higher levels of tree care by participating Tree City USA communities. The Growth Award highlights innovative programs and projects as
6
well as increased commitment of resources to urban forestry. This is our 8th year to receive this award!

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR
Did you know that Keller is recognized as a Tree City USA? Did you know that Keller has been recognized as a Tree City for 24 consecutive years? You may have wondered how we receive this recognition year after year. You may have noticed that we recently planted several trees at the Keller Sports Park, Bear Creek Park and around The Keller Pointe, and since this is the perfect time of year to plant a tree, we thought we would share this information with you. The Tree City USA program is administered by the Arbor Day Foundation. Each year, cities can apply to be recognized as a Tree City. To be eligible, cities must meet or exceed a specific list of criteria, including having a tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on our forestry program, and having an Arbor Day observation and proclamation. So far this fall, we have planted over thirty trees at the Keller Sports Park, thirty trees in Bear Creek Park, and fifty trees at The Keller Pointe. We will soon be installing additional trees in some of our medians throughout town, such as Rufe Snow Drive, North Tarrant Parkway and 1709. You may also wonder how the City of Keller pays for all of these trees. The funding comes from our Tree Mitigation Fund. By ordinance, this is a fund that developers pay into when they have to remove existing trees from properties that they are developing. For each caliper inch of tree that they remove, they must pay $150 into this fund. This funding can only be used to purchase and install trees in public areas of the city. To celebrate Arbor Day, the City Council issued a proclamation on November 21st, and we gave out over 1,500 trees at our Holly Days event on December 1st. These trees were graciously donated by New Leaf and Plant-it 2020. By continuing to have a tree ordinance, spending funds to purchase and install trees, giving away trees and observing Arbor Day, the City of Keller is well on its way to being recognized as a Tree City for the 25th consecutive year! As always, if you have comments and suggestions for us, please come to our monthly Parks and Recreation Board Meetings on the second Thursday of each month, at 6:00 pm at Keller Town Hall. We would love to hear from you.
Until next time,
Until next time, Cody Maberry Director of Community Services
