Lima Elevator celebrates 100 years in business Lima Elevator Company in Howe has been able to flourish for 100 years and become a community institution. In its time, Howe has seen businesses come and go. Grocery and hardware stores that once thrived here are now just pages in Howe’s history. But the Lima Elevator Company continues to serve area farmers as it has done since it was founded in 1918, growing from a simple feed mill into a full-fledged agribusiness. These days, the Howe operation does millions of dollars of business a year and has more than a dozen full-time employees. The company’s story is simple. W.G. Switzer, the mill’s owner, wanted to expand his operation in 1918 but didn’t have the cash on hand to make that happen. So Switzer turned to the people he knew best, his customers, with a business proposal offering them a share in the business in return for annual dividends. The Lima Elevator is still a shareholder-owned business and has remained a vital part of the Howe community. Dave Pagels, the general manager of the company, said as farmers grew and adapted to new techniques, the businesses that served them had to grow and adapt. “So the businesses that chose not to grow faded out,” Pagels explained. “Those who chose to grow and adapt with the new times survived.” The elevator, like the farms and farmers it serves, grew with the times. In addition to its mill, Lima Elevator now offers a full-line of ag chemicals and spraying services. Pagels points out LaGrange County’s large Amish population means the elevator has to make sure it meets their unique needs too. One important service Lima Elevator provides to its Amish customers is delivering products like feed directly to their farms, both large and small orders.

Natural Resources LaGrange County is predominantly an agricultural community, with more than 70 percent of its land used for crops, pasture or hay. Cropland use varies throughout the county. Because the county has a large number of dairy operations and a large Amish population, much of the land is in hay or pasture. Corn, soybeans and wheat are the major crops. LaGrange County has a number of organic farms producing organic dairy products, chickens and eggs. LaGrange County also has more than 16,000 acres of woodlands and 15,000 acres of wetlands. The Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area, maintained by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, provides more than 11,700 acres of land for fishing, hunting and other recreational activities. County, state and federal agencies are available to assist farmers and other landowners of the county.

Business owner finds accidental time capsule in LaGrange building’s attic LaGrange business owner Erik Pearson was remodeling a building at 204 N. Detroit St. in LaGrange for a new rental hall when he discovered a small attic space hiding behind an old drop ceiling. While digging around in that attic, Pearson discovered a sort of accidental time capsule, a collection of old items that somehow became lost to time. Among the items was an old fashion beaver-pelt top hat in fairly good condition. The hat is part of more than a couple of dozen of items Pearson found in the space. Pearson has owned the structures for more than ten years now and only recently decided
to remodel them. The smaller of the two buildings, a small CapeCod style structure, has had a long and colorful business history in LaGrange, said LaGrange County Historian Bryan McCoy, president of the LaGrange County Historical Society. The buildings were both constructed by LaGrange businessman and early entrepreneur Samuel Ruick, and McCoy said the small structure played home to many businesses in its lifetime. Pearson also found a collection of portraits of the Ruick family, portraits Pearson believes date back to the late 1880s based upon the size and style of frames holding those photo-

graphs. The Ruick family was one of LaGrange’s oldest, and Samuel Ruick was one of LaGrange’s most successful businessmen, he explained. One building south of Pearson’s property, the old LaGrange theater, was once home to Ruick’s opera house, McCoy said. Ruick built dozens of buildings in LaGrange, both commercial properties and homes. Pearson found items that gave him a glimpse into the building’s past. The building was at one time likely a hat store, a shoe store and the home to a 1910 bill posting business. Pearson uncovered dozens of letters from Chicago, Cleveland and New York advertising agencies instructing Ruick’s to post printed advertisements for a variety of products in and around LaGrange. The letters date from the early 1910s through 1914. Several 1912 conversations involve placing ads around LaGrange for Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum. One letter was signed with William Wrigley’s signature, the founder of the company that makes Wrigley’s gum. Ruick even built a LaGrange hotel that bore his name and stood in LaGrange until about 1960. In addition to the top hat, letters and the family photos, Pearson found two more hats – two men’s bowler hats in mint condition. The hats would have been worn at the turn of the century. He also found a shoehorn engraved with a LaGrange shoe store address and what appear to be display racks for hats and other small items – a lady’s belt buckle, eyeglasses, and perhaps a couple of pieces of furniture from a child’s dollhouse.
