mix at 195. “Confidence is always an area to improve on, knowing that you can go out and compete with anyone using your offense and your skill set instead of worrying about what the opponent might do,” Richman said. The 2018-19 schedule features Eastside’s return to the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Team State meet Jan. 5 at the Memorial Coliseum. The Blazers last participated in this event in the 2014-15 season. That meet replaces the Elwood InvitaMcKinley tional. In addition, the Blazers will have more dual meets, including home matches with Fairfield (Nov. 27), North Side (Dec. 5) and Angola (Jan. 10). The Blazers said good-bye to three seniors from last year’s team: Seth Burns (38-10), Cable Leeper Leeper (28-6) and John Martenies (17-16). When asked what he likes about the best qualities of this team, Richman pointed to wrestlers working together and wanting to help each other. “They want to help each other to be successful to make the team better,” he said. “They push each other in conditioning, drilling and live wrestling.” “They want to be in the wrestling room working hard and getting better every day,” Richman added. “They take time to help each other out and encourage each other when someone isn’t doing their best. They are excited to be back on the mat, looking forward to competition, and especially Team State.” Assisting Richman are returning assistant coaches Chris Hedges, Brian Miller and Brian Minnick. Eastside opens its season Saturday at the Wawasee Invitational. The NECC Super Dual takes place Saturday, Dec. 1 at Garrett.

Young learning with youthful Blazer girls BY JEFF JONES

BUTLER — New girls basketball coach Nate Young has several goals for his players. “We want the girls to have high energy, positive energy, and we want them to win for each other,” Young said. “We are trying to make them think on the floor. We want them to read and react on offense, and we want them to be very aggressive and smart on defense.” Young served as assistant coach to former head coach Shane Conwell the Whitman past two seasons. Young also spent several years with Eastside’s boys basketball program, leading the reserve team to a 40-23 record in three seasons, including a program-best 18 wins in the 2014-15 season. Under Conwell, the Blazers went from one win in the McKinley 2012-13 season to a sectional championship in 2015-2016 to back-to-back 15-win seasons the past two years. Last year’s team allowed just 927 points, the fewest scored against an Eastside team since the 2003-04 season. The Blazers lost four key parts of the program’s success to graduation, however. Lindsey Beard, Maddisyn Heffley, Raegan Johnson and Olivia Yoder accounted for 715
points of the team’s 1,082 points scored last year. Young is counting on several returning players from that team to take on bigger roles. Sophomore Sullivan Kessler will play point guard and will control much of the action. Throughout last season, her playing time gradually increased and she topped 100 points. Junior Paige Graber also surpassed the 100-point mark last year. Graber, a forward, can do damage beyond the arc, Young said. Classmate Rieke MacKensie Rieke exemplifies the hustle the new Blazer coach hopes all players will emulate. She also has the ability to get hot from three-point territory. Seniors Shyan McKinley and Chloe Whitman will give Eastside a post presence. McKinley can play either forward or center and Kessler help at both ends of the floor. Young is hopeful Whitman can score in the paint and give the team interior defense. Freshmen Mataya Bireley, Ryelynn Glander and Skyelar Kessler all could earn varsity playing time, Young said. Young called the younger Kessler “probably our best shooter” who handles pressure well. Bireley gives the team energy and has a nose for the basketball. Like
Bireley, Glander has a nose for the basketball and could develop into a very good point guard. “I’m very excited for my first year,” Young said. “I’m excited more for the girls, to see what they took from the summer and fall workouts. I’m excited to see how our new system works against teams.” Working with both the boys and girls programs has taught Young a great deal. “I learned a lot from (boys coach) Ryan Abbott on how to structure a practice and how to stay on time throughout the practice. I learned what needs to be implemented before our first scrimmage and first game,” he said. “Ryan has taught me so much that I could just keep listing things. It was tough to leave his program as his JV coach, but it allowed me to take the next step and become a head coach myself.” “(Varsity boys assistant coach) Mike Lortie was also a huge influence,” Young said. “He taught me when to take things serious and when to have a little fun. I learned a lot from Mike just watching how he scouted and what he included in a scouting report. I watched how Mike would interact with officials during a time out, how
he treated them and how he knew all their names.” “I learned a lot from our seniors last year,” Young added. “Pooh (Maddisyn Heffley), Lindsay, Olivia and Raegan taught me how to interact and treat the girls and how to lead them. I will always take things from that class and sprinkle it in for years to come.” The youthful Blazers won’t get any breaks as the Northeast Corner Conference is loaded. League and tournament champion Angola won 23 games before being ousted in its Class 4A sectional championship game. Fairfield won 24 games and advanced to the Class 3A semi-state, losing to eventual state champion Northwestern. Central Noble won 23 games and captured the Class 2A state championship after losing in the semi-state round the previous year. After a down season, Garrett should be on the rebound with young talent. “We have such a hard conference,” Young said. “It will be fun to compete against these great coaches and players.” Eastside visits Woodlan Nov. 27 and hosts Garrett Dec. 1.

Blazers boast numbers, talented players BY JEFF JONES

BUTLER — There’s strength in numbers. Eastside’s boys basketball team was on the short end of the number game last year. It wasn’t unusual for the Blazers to play just six or seven players in a contest, in part due to injury. This season, returning head coach Ryan Abbott has several possibilities, led by seniors Alex Yoder and Chase Franz and sophomore Phoenix Smyth, who lettered as a freshman. Pfefferkorn With more than 20 players out for basketball, the Blazers have plenty of options. Abbott expects to use 8-10 players at the varsity level this season. “Our depth at the varsity level will be a tremendous asset for us this year,” he said. “We will have little distinction in the
ability of our top eight players, and the capability of playing up to 10 players at times. This is an exciting component that we have not had in my time at Eastside, and I look forward to coaching our team so we can take advantage of this depth.” Having players returning to lead the way is important. “Alex and Chase bring us experience and leadership,” Abbott said. “They have been through the highs and lows of a varsity season and witnessed firsthand what it takes to be successful, and even what can cause Yoder difficulties in games and throughout the course of a season.” “Alex has tremendously improved himself as a basketball player and as a leader,” the Blazer coach said. “I hope his gritty, hard-working attitude becomes the identity of this team.”

Franz missed about half of last season recovering from a foot injury, but Abbott believes he is ready to go. “Chase has persevered through injuries and challenges throughout his basketball experience,” the Blazer coach said. “I’m excited to see him get his feet under him and get back to the basketball form he’s capable of playing at this year.” Several players who transferred from Hamilton prior to the 2017-18 season played reserve basketball for Eastside last year because of transfer rules, but are eligible to play at the varsity Johnson level. As reserve Blazers, they compiled a 14-8 win-loss record. Those players are fully integrated into the Eastside program, both Yoder and Noah Johnson, one of those transfers, stated. The biggest improvements they made last year, Johnson believes, were moving the ball and playing together. “We learned that moving the ball and playing as a team was huge,” he said. “Most of the kids that came from the JV were at Hamilton the previous year. We developed more of a team chemistry at Eastside, and I think that helps.” “Just getting started and playing together as a team,” Yoder said when looking ahead to this season. “We didn’t get to play with them, but with them moving up to varsity, I think it will be a good transition.” Yoder sees ball movement and leadership as key ingredients. “Leadership is a huge thing. If you have a few guys who can bring leadership to
the team, it just helps everybody develop,” Yoder said. “Your team chemistry is better that way. “What I’ve noticed in the summer is that as a team, we moved the ball pretty well, and when we did that, we were successful.” “I’m excited about the identity of our team,” Abbott said. “I love our grit and tenacity. If we can devote ourselves to the team above our own individual desires and goals, this team will be a tremendous group to coach.” With the increased numbers, Franz Abbott hopes to have a C team to give players more minutes of game experience throughout the season. The Blazers graduated four seniors from last year’s squad. Leading scorer Caleb Ballentine, now at Adrian College, was an All-Northeast Corner Conference selection with 308 points (12.8 points per game). He also grabbed 115 rebounds, had 50 assists and recorded 33 steals. Aaron Dean scored 227 points (9.7 ppg) to go with 89 rebounds, 28 steals and a team-leading 73 assists. Andrew Steffen grabbed a team-leading 139 rebounds and added 109 points. Riley Thompson stroked a team-best 38 three-point field goals while averaging six points per game. New to the schedule this season is a Dec. 18 contest at Hicksville, Ohio. The Blazers and Aces haven’t played since the 1997-98 season. Eastside opens the season Saturday against DeKalb.

Chayse Hulbert has been a pleasant surprise thus far. “He’s committed,” DePew said. “He bowls outside of practice and the season.” Wilson brings a two-handed approach to the lanes. “It’s a different style, but he’s had success with it,” the Blazer coach said. “He has

We’d bring a new one in and they’d gel right away.” “We don’t have Weicht that this year,” he said. “We’re also transitioning from Mark to myself, but at the end of the year, I don’t see any reason why we can’t get a sectional championship. “I feel we have the most up-side. We just have to continue to get better and better each week.”
