jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Eastside’s wrestling team has a solid base to work with as almost every wrestler returns from last year’s 11-15 team. Trae Hand graduated, taking a 26-13 win-loss record with him, but head coach Joel Richman returns seven wrestlers who won at least 12 matches a year ago. As a sophomore, Laik Minnick was a semi-state qualifier, compiling a team-leading 38 victories Burns against nine losses. Minnick led the team with 25 pins and 90 takedowns. Minnick was a Northeast Corner Conference champion at 170 pounds. He will return in that weight class this season. Senior Seth Burns is also back following a Chase Leeper 30-win season. Nineteen of Burns’ wins came by pinfall. Burns will likely wrestle at 138 pounds, moving up from 126 pounds a year ago. As a freshman heavyweight, Chase Leeper won 27 matches, including 19 by pin. Older brother Cable Leeper, a senior, returns following a 22-win season that included 16 pins. Cable Leeper is expected to wrestle 152 pounds, moving up one weight class. “Seth, Cable and Laik lead by showing

what it takes every day to achieve success,” Richman said. “There is not a day when you can back down and just go through the motions. It has to be all out, all the time. “That drive for success, to be the best, is a great motivator,” Richman added. “They want to control every match from the beginning to the end. (They have) the goal of making it further than last year in the state series, and they want to bring others with them.” Chase Leeper was runner-up at heavyweight Cable Leeper in the NECC meet, earning All-NECC honors. Also back are sophomores Treyven McKinley (15 wins), Vance Erwin (13 wins) and Hunter Miller (12 wins). The Blazers have better numbers to work with this season, with 19 athletes out for the wrestling team. Minnick That leads to competition in practices for varsity mat time. Eight of those wrestlers are freshmen. The team has just three seniors — Burns, Cable Leeper and John Martenies. “With the exception of one wrestler, they all have years of experience on the mat from high school, club and/or junior high,” Richman said. “They have great attitudes and they are willing to do what it takes in order to improve. “They are led by example from the upperclassmen who continually push

for correct technique as well as hard conditioning.” Takoda Kissinger, who finished 8-27 as a freshman, will battle with freshman Konner Lower for mat time at 106 pounds. Two more freshmen, Bill Luker and Lane Burns, should wrestle at 113 and 120 pounds, respectively. Freshmen Mason Fritch and Destani Damron will compete for mat time at 126 pounds, and another freshman, Kristopher Patrick, should see time at 132 pounds. Junior Cedric Roose is new to the varsity roster. He could see mat time at 138 pounds. McKinley, who wrestled 132 pounds last season, will bump up to 145 this year. Freshmen Jackson Wicker and Gabe Henry will compete for mat time at 160 pounds. Martenies, who was 7-5 in limited varsity action last year, should wrestle at 182. Erwin, who was 13-14, will likely wrestle at 195. Hunter Miller and sophomore Keegan Miller will battle to see who wrestles at 220. Hunter Miller was 12-24 there last year with three pins. Keegan Miller was 4-7 with two pins a year ago. Team goals include a winning season in dual meets — the last one was an 18-11 record in the 2014-2015 season — being a contender at invitationals, advancing more wrestlers to regionals and semi-state, and taking at least one wrestler to the state finals. The Blazers open their mat season Nov. 25 at the Wawasee Invitational. Eastside hosts day two of the NECC Super Dual at 9 a.m. Dec. 2 and Woodlan in a Dec. 14 dual meet.

Seniors teaching others what it takes to win BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — At 4-0, Eastside’s girls basketball team is off to its best start in more than 20 seasons. There will be bumps — and there have already been bruises and stitches — throughout the season, but the Blazers have the ingredients for another successful campaign. The 1994-1995 Blazers, who finished 17-5, began the season 5-0 and reached the finals of the Northeast Beard Corner Conference tournament. The 1977-1978 Eastside team won 10 straight to start the season, winning the DeKalb Holiday Tournament and DeKalb Sectional. All but two players return from last season’s 15-10 squad. Johnson Among the returnees are four seniors who combined for more than 28 points per contest last season. Senior Lindsey Beard scored 301 points for a 12-point per game average, earning All-NECC honors. Classmate Maddisyn Heffley runs the offensive show at point guard. She averaged 7.5 points per contest, also earning All-NECC recognition. Heffley contributed a team-leading 81 assists and 80 steals to go with 75 rebounds, fourth-best on the team. Beard had a team-leading 44 three-point field goals and 96 rebounds, second-best on the team. Averaging just over 10 points per game

through four contests, Beard is closing in on the 1,000 point mark. She would become the seventh girls basketball player to achieve that distinction. Seniors Raegan Johnson and Olivia Yoder are also back. Each player averaged more than four points per game last year. Johnson connected for 30 three-pointers. Yoder collected more than four rebounds per game. Johnson is scoring just over nine points per contest thus far, and Yoder has contributed seven points per game. Heffley “They’re champions. They know how to win,” said head coach Shane Conwell, referring to foursome who played key roles in the 2015-2016 sectional championship. “They know what it takes to win, and now, the next chapter for them is Yoder to continue to win and to show others how to win,” he said. “That’s my challenge for the seniors this year, to continue to win and show the others — the freshmen, the sophomores and the juniors — how to win. “They have their fingerprints on this program, and it’s their job to leave it better for the others.” Lost to graduation were Hannah Yoder (8.9 points per game) and Emma Moughler (8.1) from Eastside’s 15-10 squad. Moughler grabbed 3.6 rebounds per game and often defended players bigger than her. Yoder grabbed just over two rebounds per contest.

“The end goal is (to win) championships, but my goal right now is to be better than last year.” SHANE CONWELL Eastside Girls Basketball Coach Six juniors, two sophomores, two transfers from Hamilton and six freshmen, up from Eastside’s junior high program, complete the roster. “At this point, we’ve established the program to where the girls know what’s expected, and the incoming girls know what’s expected,” Conwell said. “Really, it’s a matter of execution and consistency to be successful. “From what I saw in week one of practice, they’re not holding anything back,” the Blazer coach said. “Drills, effort, they’re not holding anything back. Sometimes, you’ve got to push them a little bit to get them where they need to be, but there’s also been times where I’ve had

to pull back the reins a little bit. That’s a good problem to have. “It seems like every practice, we’ve got somebody — whether that’s a freshman, sophomore or junior — that I step back and go, ‘Wow, she’s got a shot at this.’ Maybe it’s the same girl the next day and maybe it’s somebody else, but every day, I’ve seen a new girl emerge and show signs of getting significant minutes,” Conwell stated. “That’s the beauty of having everybody pushing each other, and I think that’s what is going to make this team and season special, that everybody is going to push each other 1-20.” How good can these Blazers be? “The end goal is championships, but my goal right now is to be better than last year,” Conwell said. “What that looks like now could change halfway through the season and it could change by the end of the season. “Right now, I want to be better than last season, and there will be no excuse for anything less.” Eastside’s varsity girls and boys teams will host Lakewood Park in the old Butler High School gym for a doubleheader Tuesday, Dec. 12.

New leaders ready to shine for Eastside BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Tradition takes time to establish, but that’s what Eastside’s boys basketball team has done under coach Ryan Abbott. In five seasons, the Blazers have gone 71-46, including last season’s record-setting 20-5 campaign that included a share of the Northeast Corner Conference regularseason championship. Four players from that team — who combined to Ballentine score nearly 900 points — graduated, but the cupboard is far from bare. All-NECC players Jacob Thompson (363 points, 7.8 rebounds per game), Jordan Yoder (256 points, 55 three-point field goals) and Cade Willard (242 points, 5.6 rebounds) were the top Steffen three scorers, and Dalton Rieke provided valuable

minutes off the bench. The Blazers return two senior starters — Caleb Ballentine and Aaron Dean — who also had big parts in that success. Ballentine scored 223 points to go with 88 rebounds. Dean added 171 points, 62 rebounds, 33 steals and 78 assists. “You’re only as good as your leaders will make you, and I think Caleb and Aaron have been waiting,” Abbott said. “They have the keys to our team, and I’m very comfortable they will lead us in the right direction.” Dean Also back is senior Andrew Steffen who grabbed nearly two rebounds per game and two points per game. There’s another junior competing for some of those minutes, but our core group is going to be those six players, led by Caleb Ballentine and Aaron Dean. They’ve played major roles in a lot of important games for us. Those are our proven guys that we expect to carry a lot of the load.” In year six at Eastside, Abbott said the best word to describe his program is tradition. “We’ve been really fortunate that each senior class has built on what the previous group did, and that’s exciting for me, and we’ve done it in different ways,” Abbott said. “That’s the key for these seniors, and for Caleb and Aaron to lead the way, and build on what we did last year, but to do it in a unique way.” “That tradition almost raises the bar for what the previous seniors have done. We’ve been fortunate as a program to have guys buy into that. It’s just up to our coaching staff and those key contributors to find ways we can be successful. “We had a great summer. We’ve adjusted on both sides of the ball. We have to play differently than we did last year. “We didn’t win 20 games by accident

last year. We did a lot of good things, but we’re going to be able to do some different things this year that our program and our fans should be excited about.” The Blazers have 20 players out for basketball. Several of them are transfers from Hamilton, and many of those players will have to play on Eastside’s reserve squad this season. Last year’s reserve team, led by Brandon Kinsey, finished 13-8, and several of those players are ready to show what they can do at the varsity level. “I think there’s going to be some guys who are going to be surprises to other teams and even our own fans, who maybe don’t know how good Andrew Steffen and Riley Thompson really are. Because of our success last year, they really did not get a lot of opportunities to contribute as much as they could have at other schools. “Andrew, in particular playing behind Jacob (Thompson), really could have been a major component on another team. Riley played JV all year and sparingly on the varsity level. Those guys can play,” Abbott said. “We expect them to come in and not miss a beat. I think they’ll transition really well into what we want to do. “Juniors Alex Yoder and Chase Franz were proven JV players last year. They’re both gym rats, they understand our program, and I think they’ll be able to take that next step from playing JV to varsity for us.” In year six at Eastside, Abbott said the best word to describe his program is tradition. “We’ve been really fortunate that each senior class has built on what the previous group did, and that’s exciting for me, and we’ve done it in different ways,” Abbott said. “That’s the key for these seniors, and

Bowling teams aiming for new territory BY JEFF JONES

jjones@kpcmedia.com BUTLER — Eastside’s boys bowling team has long been a power in the Northeast Bowling Conference. This year, the girls team could establish itself as a player with several experienced bowlers returning. Alyssa Moore graduated after advancing to regionals a year ago. Returning to the team are Karen Baldwin, Kelly Hartley, Ziayra Hulbert and Lindsay Wallace. New to the bowling team is Ashley Brown. “We should be really good this year,” said coach Jon Wallace Jr. “These girls have been together for two or more years. They’re a team this year.” “Kelly (Hartley) bowled a lot during the summer and she had a coach help her,” coach Mark Cline said. “All of them bowled over the summer.” “They all have good attitudes,” added coach Zach Hulbert. “They’re all clicking really well.” “Lindsay’s averaging 176, and she gets them motivated,” Wallace said. Hulbert is battling through an injury. It’s hoped she can recover in time for the conference or sectional meets. Baldwin is the team’s disciplinarian, the coaches all say, keeping the other bowlers in line and motivated. Brown is quiet, but has shown a desire to learn and improve. “I would love to see the girls win conference for the very first time,” coach Wallace said. “I believe they can do it. They’re all getting better.” “I really think they motivate each other,” Cline added. “You see a lot of laughing and joking. You don’t see any standoffish kids.” “It seems like they’re a tighter group,” Wallace added. Last year, the boys team tied for the Northeast Bowling Conference, but emerged as conference champions based

on total pins. That set the stage for the Blazers to win the team sectional championship. Eastside’s team missed advancing to the semi-state round by eight pins. Matt David, now bowling at Indiana Tech, was the individual sectional and regional champion, and advanced all the way to the Indiana High School Bowling final four, where he placed second to Peru’s Bailey Mavrick. David won IHSB Bowler of the Year. “Matt had an absolutely phenomenal year,” Cline said. In addition to David, Kameron Hoff graduated, but Eastside returns several bowlers who were part of last season’s success. Senior Zack Cline was sectional runner-up to David and is fitting into the top spot quite nicely. Also returning are seniors Camden Miller, Nick Nodine and senior newcomer Brian George. Also new to the team are freshmen Mark Poirier, Dominic Weicht and Xander Webb. “The three returning seniors have been bowling together since middle school,” coach Cline said. “I think we’ve started seeing more of being a team last year, and I think the kids have done well thus far of picking each other up. “Zack’s kind of our guinea pig. He’s the one who can do the most with the bowling ball,” coach Cline said. “We throw him out front — and I think that’s where he likes to be. We tell him to throw it across the arrows at 15 and across to 10. We can judge that for the rest of the kids, what kind of equipment to use and where to put them on the lanes. You’ve got to see how (the ball’s) going to react.” Miller and Nodine have emerged as legitimate threats. “Coming to the end of last year, something finally clicked for Nick, and he really took a turn for the better,” coach ➤ Bowling, Page 8

Cline said. “Camden’s come out this year the same way. “Something’s just clicked for both of them. Maybe it’s because it’s their senior year,” the Eastside coach said. “They each have their own talents. They all throw the ball their own way. Camden throws the ball one way, Nick throws it one way and Zack throws it one way.” “You really have no idea what the (ball) reaction’s going to be on the oil,” explained coach Ryan David. “It’s kind of difficult to coach them when they all throw

the ball differently. You hope to get them to break down the oil.” “Attitude is a big thing this year,” Cline said. “I think they really like bowling with each other.” Keeping bowlers focused on the next ball has been a point of emphasis. “Missing a spare is not the end of the world,” coach David said. “You’ve got 30 seconds to forgot about that shot until the time you have to throw it again.” “It’s just a game,” Cline added. “We do like to win, but it’s just a game.”
