Fireproof steel framing adds strength

Q. I have seen articles in the past about the use of steel in new construction of homes. We built a new house about 15 years ago and have been considering a new build. I remember several years ago when lumber prices went crazy, all the talk was steel framing construcSQUARE tion. These days I CORNERS have not heard a lot about it. Steel has typically been used in new construction since the beginning. Usually steel beams are used for

load-bearing walls and steel posts are typically used to support those beams. Steel is commonly used on all brackets and hangers because of the added strength and mechanical ability to tie wood together and not come apart. Nowadays there are a slew of metal fasteners required for any type of wood construction from joist hangers to hurricane ties and strapping. Properly designed steel beams can have a much higher load-bearing capacity than wood with a higher rate of deflection (bending ability). The last 10 or 15 years, engineered wood beams have become the norm because they are easier to cut and work with than steel. Steel can also be used as a design component such as steel cantilevers for porches and decks along with steel handrail and stair systems.

Modern style or contemporary styling steel is a common design tool. Yes, there are specialized builders that do complete home framing out of steel. They use steel studs, floor joists and steel rafters and sheathing. It costs more money to frame with steel, but the benefits are several. It is fireproof and it is stronger and will resist storms and hurricanes. Steel is not energy efficient and is an excellent conductor of heat and cold, so extra consideration must be made to get proper maximum insulation values.
