For best results choose experienced stucco contractors BY JEFF DEAHL Q. We have a home in Arizona that has stucco on the exterior along with thousands of others like it in that area. We are going to build a new house at the lake next fall and we would like it to have a southwestern style. I want to also have the stucco on the exterior but everyone we talked to says not to because of cracking of the JEFF DEAHL stucco. Is it impossible to do a stucco finish on the exterior of our house in Indiana? — Melissa on Lake James A. No it’s not impossible and, if it’s done right, it can be durable, good
looking and last for years and years. A couple of things to consider when thinking about what’s involved. First off, most of the construction for houses in Florida and states like Arizona and California uses masonry block for the exterior walls. It’s done for hurricane protection and durability but also because the thermal mass of the house keeps it cool in hot weather. When the walls are made of concrete block there is a lot less movement to the walls, making the exterior less vulnerable to cracking. So, if the framing of the new house is wood it is important that the framing is tight, and the lumber used be fully dry to prevent movement in the first couple years. It is also very important that you
have an experienced stucco contractor who understands the importance of each step of the process. There is a strict protocol that includes two layers of weather resistant barrier, one as a drainage plane and the other is a bond break layer. Control joints must be used along with properly installed lath and scratch coat, brown coat and finish coat. If any short cuts are made on the application of the preparation or the finish coats, cracks are guaranteed to appear. Cracks in the stucco can be the cause of complete failure of the stucco exterior. Cracks will allow water to seep into the coating and as this freezes and thaws, it will destroy the exterior and create mold issues inside the wall assembly.

Holy mother of summer, it’s gotten HOT. My dog is sleeping in our shower because the tiles are cool. I’m testing recipes in the morning because I don’t want my oven cranking all afternoon. And (this is how I know it’s really hot), I may be coming close to drinking my daily recommended amount of water. But water can get a little boring. All this by way of saying, if you have a blender, get it out. Buy frozen berries and other frozen fruit, or freeze the fresh stuff yourself. Cut watermelon into chunks and stash those in the freezer. Have some honey or agave or simple syrup on hand. Blend it all up, maybe with some crushed ice, or juice, or even some sort of milk or nut milk or yogurt for those of you who are into the creamier thing. Drink. Rinse and repeat. After 5 p.m., you may also add liquor
to the grownups’ glasses. After 4 if it’s a Sunday. After 3 if it’s above 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside and it’s a Sunday. WATERMELON STRAWBERRY SMOOTHIE Servings: 2 Strat to finish: 5 minutes 2 cups frozen watermelon chunks 1 cup frozen strawberries 1/2 cup crushed ice 1 1/2 cups orange juice, preferably fresh 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon agave or honey, or to taste Remove the watermelon and berries from the freezer and let sit at room temperature for 10 minutes to soften just slightly. Place all the ingredients in a blender. Process until blended and thick. Serve in glasses with straws.
