You can convert attic into bedroom, bathroom Q. We have a home that was built in the 1960s and has a big attic space that is used as a play area and some storage. There is a stair that leads up there, but the stairs are steep and big. Once you are up there, there is a set of dormers with windows facing the front street side. The ceiling is finished kind of, with drywall that’s not finished and a wood floor. I want to make a master bedroom and bathroom JEFF DEAHL in the upper space. A. Yes, it is possible to convert the upstairs to a master bedroom with a bathroom but there are a few things you need to figure out first. The existing ceiling will need to come off, so the roof rafters can be expanded to facilitate adding thicker insulation to today’s standards. If the upstairs of your existing home has flat ceilings upstairs, a good thing because you want to gain any additional headroom you can. The standard code requirement is to have an average of 7’ of headroom for it to be considered living space. Most of the time the result will be to maximize the headroom of the space and use the highest performance insulation so what you must add to the rafter can be minimized. The windows up there suggest that

there is reasonable room space. The floor system must also be checked to make sure it is thick enough to support the load of the new bedroom space. Standard span charts from the code book would tell you if they were tall enough given their existing spacing. Of course, plumbing would have to be located and run up there, including drain lines for the added bath. You also mentioned the stairs; you don’t have to change them given they are existing, but my guess is they are also not to today’s code requirement.
