Rangehood options on the rise BY JEFF DEAHL Q. This summer we are going to be remodeling our kitchen and the adjoining area. The ceiling and walls are planned to be removed to open the space to the adjacent living and dining area. The ceiling is going to be vaulted for a big great room space with a center island. The current SQUARE plan has the range CORNERS top in the island, but I’m having trouble Jeff Deahl figuring out how to install a range hood. Any suggestions? — Phyllis of Kendallville A. When you start creating different (not typical) spaces there are always things that need to get figured out and sometimes the answers are not typical either. When it comes to range hoods

there are several options that come to mind. They can be difficult and most of the time expensive solutions. Range hoods these days have become sophisticated with options of range hoods being hidden in cabinetry that don’t look at all like range hoods. New range hoods can be much more powerful to properly ventilate today’s active kitchen. With a larger family kitchen often you can have larger ovens and cook tops so added exhaust ventilation is required. The first range hood that comes to mind is BOSCH unit that is 36” wide and is a down draft unit; down draft meaning that the exhaust air is sucked down a vent that goes into the floor or crawl space and is vented to the exterior through a vent pipe. This stainless steel unit is operated by a switch; when activated the unit rises out of the counter 13” when fully extended and disappears down when not in use. They also make some very appealing free-standing range hoods that have

a low profile canopy that can match the finish on the new appliances and extends down from the ceiling if it’s not too high. If the ceiling is within 9 feet or so you can use a flush mounted ceiling exhaust unit that has a relatively high CFM to expel unwanted steam, smoke and smell.

Swimming-pool landscaping: Pretty with a minimum of debris BY DEAN FOSDICK Associated Press

Landscaping around an outdoor swimming pool requires no-muss, no-fuss plant selections. The pool can be a flowery focal point, but don’t open it to litter from leaves and limbs. “Both in- and above-ground pools offer unique design challenges and opportunities,” said Tim Moloney, an instructor in landscape design at the University of Missouri. “In-ground pools offer the ability to provide screening with lower height plants” but may have more issues with litter falling into the pool. “Above-ground pools are somewhat sheltered from ground debris, but are more of a challenge for visually softening the walls of the pool and (adding) privacy from outside viewers,” Moloney said. Start by considering plant needs — sun or shade. Then decide what you want your poolside landscaping to

achieve. “Privacy screening versus sun exposure is typically the strongest pool-owner concern,” Moloney said. “This is followed closely by litter and tracking of grass clippings and mulch materials. “After function is addressed, we focus on form,” he said. “Making the space as enjoyable as possible.” Brightly colored flowers attract pollinators, and that could mean bee stings. Some of the most attractive ornamental plants have thorns. Both are obviously annoying to thinly clad and barefoot bathers. “Typically, I have found that insects will generally ignore us if we ignore them,” Moloney said. “Just the mere presence of bees in the landscape does not initiate attack. However, if severe allergies or phobias of bees exist, I recommend concentrating on other ways to brighten up the landscape — brightly colored foliage, for example.”

Or turn to marigolds, chrysanthemums, mint, foxglove, geraniums and zinnias whose blooms don’t typically attract stinging insects. And thorns? “Cacti are very climate specific, but can offer huge aesthetic benefits for arid environments,” Moloney said. “Roses offer us what few other plants can — an entire summer of repeat blooms. In my opinion, the benefits of these plants outweigh the hazards as long as the plants are positioned an appropriate distance from well-trafficked areas.” Some other poolside gardening do’s and don’ts: • Watch where you stockpile organic materials such as pine straw or bark. “They can blow or be tracked into the pool by wet feet on pool decking,” Moloney said. • Select plants for year-round interest, even in cold weather when the pool is closed. Think evergreens.

For both beauty and flavor, consider planting berry bushes (AP) — No need to choose between planting either an ornamental or a fruiting bush in your yard. Plant both with a single plant! Many berry bushes are pretty enough to be grown as landscape plants. Let’s foray out into the yard to see which bushes are best at offering these dual pleasures. Beautiful blues Blueberries are an attractive and tasty place to begin this berry sampler. They are truly year-round ornamentals. Spring brings clusters of blossoms dangling from stems like dainty, white bells. Summer brings soft, slightly bluish, greenery which, come fall, ignites into a fiery red. Even in winter, the stems turn red to offer a bright contrast to a snowy backdrop. In some gardens, birds try to monopolize every blueberry. If birds

threaten, drape bird netting over the bushes while the fruits are ripening, or construct a decorative, walk-in, bird-tight cage, either permanent or temporary. Alternatively, do nothing and take your chances. Blueberries require a soil that is moist, very acidic and rich in humus. Provide these conditions by testing the acidity of your soil and adjusting it to the requisite pH of 4 to 5.5, and by mixing a generous bucketful of peat moss into each planting hole. After planting, spread a few inches of leaves, wood chips, sawdust or some other weed-free organic mulch over the ground, to be replenished every year. Blueberries like the same soil as rhododendrons, mountain laurels and azaleas, so why not mingle them with these other beautiful shrubs? Beyond blueberries A blueberry relative that’s also

More cosmopolitan in its soil likes and dislikes is juneberry. It exists in both tree and bush forms, and all sport cheery white or pink flowers in early spring, blazing orange and purple foliage in fall, and neat growth habits all year. Juneberry plants are better known for their beauty than for their fruits, but the berries — which look like blueberries — provide their own unique gustatory experience: They’re sweet and juicy, with the richness of sweet cherry and a hint of almond.

Waterproof decking: Several options Q. We have been in our house for 25 years now and have enjoyed our outdoor spaces. A concrete patio has been added on the lower level and now we would like to replace our existing treated wood second floor deck with new decking materials and railing. On the original deck I used a corrugated material to slope to one side to provide a dry area where we put the patio. It has worked OK but I know that there is debris and dirt trapped between it and the decking. When I replace the decking is there some sort of waterproof decking we can use without making it a rubber roof? — Tim of Avilla A. There are options for creating

a reasonably lower cost dry area without an actual roof. There first are waterproof materials that lay onto a solid sheeting like a vinyl flooring material. One such product is Duradek, which is designed for decks. It lays like flooring and is waterproof and comes in several textures and patterns. Another option is decking material designed to trap water and let it flow and run off on one side. The deck slope usually is about 1/8 inch per foot and can vary by different product recommendations. The extruded composite and aluminum decking materials work well but have a hollow sound and feel which makes it noisy when

it rains. It also has to be capped at the ends to conceal the hollow end core which can be a source for leaking and deterioration. There are also solid composite decking materials that are basically a bulb seal compressed tongue and groove material. These work well and the end grain can be exposed so a cap is not required. There is also a Dexerdry ribbed polymer extrusion that fit into the slotted edges of certain composite decking to create a waterproof seal. Pruning olive trees a balance of art and science BY CAIN BURDEAU Associated Press

TORRETTA, Sicily — Watching Giovanni Caruso prune an olive tree is like observing a mountain climber decide how to reach the next hand-grip in a cliff. He chooses his path with deliberation. He even wears a helmet. With a set of newfangled tools and theories, this 35-year-old Sicilian biologist and self-made pruning expert is working on his first commercial project to introduce the central Italian technique known as the “polyconic vase” into Sicily’s often remote and overgrown olive groves. This method seeks to sculpt a tree into separate cone-shaped sides, thus producing more olives that are easier to pick. “The cone’s geometric shape allows the most branches to be exposed to the sun,” Caruso said. I thought about the overgrown olive trees I bought a few years ago with my wife and two boys on a property in Sicily. This was the first year we pruned them, nervously trying to open them up to the sun as we’d learned from Caruso. Caruso wielded a chain saw mounted on an extendable pole and powered by a battery pack. Pruning in Sicily is mostly done with regular chain saws, but also with handsaws and shears, as we had done. He moved on to another tree. “Just looking at it, it seems to be a globe,” he said. “We’re going to try to make it a vase, which means we’ll cut out the center.” And within a few minutes he’d transformed it. The location was redolent of history: 6,000 olive trees on a former noble estate in Torretta, a valley town near Palermo. The sprawling villa, once a monastery, recalls a Sicily of opulent leisure and eccentric aristocrats. To an untrained eye, the orchard could appear fine. But a lot is going wrong, Caruso said. Many trees suffer from neglect and disease. “In this area, no one prunes anymore,” lamented Gregorio Ugdulena, a descendant of the family that developed the estate. His sister, Amalia, remembered when field hands clambered up high ladders to

prune, and boys carried pots of tar to heal the trees’ fresh cuts. “Many people have abandoned their olive orchards,” Gregorio said with a sigh. That’s why he brought in Caruso, an energetic former bersagliere (an elite rifleman) in the Italian army. In the past four years, Caruso has trained himself in the polyconic vase method. He now does workshops in Sicily, where Ugdulena and I met him. It is early April, the end of a long pruning season for Caruso and also for my wife and me. We’d spent much of the past few months learning to prune our long-abandoned, 40-odd olive trees. For beginners, pruning any tree can be daunting. Where to start? What damage will I do if I cut this branch instead of that one? Will I kill a tree? Can I climb into a tree to prune? How exactly should I cut off a branch? Add to this the contradictory advice from friends and local farmers, all eager to tell you what you’re doing wrong: “Clear out the center.” “No, because of the heat, you should leave some branches to shade the center.” “Cut off branches that hang to the ground.” “No, don’t do that.” “Cut branches that shoot up.” “No, leave a few shooting up.” And on it goes. A look at the trees around us made us even more confused. Many were pruned so heavily that only a few limp twigs were left dangling off main branches. The sound of chain saws was routine. Slowly, we gained confidence and speed. We started with obviously depleted dry sections, suckers and overlapping branches, and then moved on to what wasn’t so obvious. It took hours to prune the bigger specimens. Caruso stood in a section of the orchard planted with Nocellara del belice trees. They looked nice to me. But not to him. “The trees lack leaves and there are many diseases,” Caruso said. “Look around: It’s surrounded by mountains so there isn’t any circulation, and there’s a lot of humidity.” Humidity is bad for olives, he said. At his side was Giuseppe Lo Presti, a 41-year-old agronomist and olive tree specialist. Lo Presti stooped to inspect a June 2018 •  Page 32

dead tree. “Look, this is what happens when you don’t cut right,” he said. Someone had cut into the trunk, allowing infections in. Caruso moved on, his chain saw whirring into action. “The trick is to start from the top; the apex controls the plant,” he said. “By pruning from the top, you can see how much light comes in.” The new technique has been met with skepticism in the region, Caruso said. Resting a foot on a wall overlooking the orchard, he recounted how three men stopped to criticize him, an outsider with a never-before-seen helmet. He wears it because he works from the ground and could be hit by falling branches — he has a scar to prove it. “They shouted: ‘No, don’t cut that one! Cut that branch! Where are you from?’ It was quite a spectacle,” he said. “Everyone thinks they’re the best, that only they know (how to prune).” He added: “Pruning is often seen as an art, but we see it as a technique. People are often looking for aesthetic perfection.” He paused. “There’s not a manual on how to do it, each tree must be done individually.” A good pruner must understand how a tree functions so that every cut makes sense, Caruso and Lo Presti agreed. When I came home, I saw trees that still needed work. But I was glad we hadn’t bought a chain saw and sawed away. We are trying to balance many things, including maintaining the aesthetic beauty of long gnarled branches, and avoiding power tools. We want to watch and learn how our trees respond to what we’ve done. Already this spring, we’re pleased at how the now-thinned-out olives are flowering. Did we play a hand in creating all the lovely small yellow clusters? I like to think so.

Modern folklore patterns adorn decor (AP) — Many young international designers are drawing on heritage, folklore and their imaginations to create contemporary textile, ceramic and wall-covering patterns. Some are finding larger audiences through decor retailers and online sites. Others are taking their imaginations outdoors, onto the sides of buildings. At Spoonflower , designer Andrea Lauren creates linocut patterns of woodland animals, flora, even the Loch Ness monster. They’re printed on textiles that can be used for pillows, curtains, bedding or lampshades. Illustrator Jeremiah Witting of Portland, Oregon, does pen-and-ink illustrations inspired by a 1910 compendium

of Grimm’s Fairy Tales passed down to him by his grandmother. And for Parisian artist Vannina Baquere, inspiration comes from an eclectic mix of Mexican serape blankets, fantastic gardens and Scandinavian folk prints. Many early American quilt and rug patterns live comfortably in the 21st century because of their simple geometric designs and clean color palettes. At Garnet Hill , the Johanna puts a modern spin on pieced quilts with circle pieces instead of traditional squares. Annie Selke’s Merry Go Round hooked rug re-scales the playful medallions and flowers of a 1930s artwork that Selke found in France; the rug is offered in two

different colorways. Great Plains Native American motifs are crafted into a bold geometric rug exclusively at Crate & Kids from Los Angeles-based Bethany Yellowtail. The artist has also done a striking wool blanket, available on her own website, that she calls “All My Relations.” Stripes of various configurations reflect Crow and Northern Cheyenne elements, both part of her heritage. Modcloth has ceramic plates and glassware decorated with delicately painted folk art motifs in a pretty palette of charcoal, lime, orange and mint, from the company One Hundred Eighty Degrees in St. Paul, Minnesota.
