New roof must match home’s roof line
Q. I’m a do-it-yourselfer and am working on a small room addition on my house. My house is a small, simple three-bedroom, two-bath home. It’s a ranch and has the same roof line with gables on each end and a small gable over the garage. SQUARE The addition is an CORNERS expansion of the master bedroom on the back side and will Jeff Deahl bump out 10 feet. I was told that I needed to have trusses with a high heel or have a bigger rafter to get added insulation value to the addition ceiling. So I decided to stick

build with 2x10-inch rafters and use 2x6-inch ceiling joists to get more “R” value at the outside wall. I did this, now my fascias don’t align with the existing house; what’s wrong? — Tim from Avilla A. Some assumptions I’m going on is that your existing roof structure is stick built by probably a 2x6-inch rafter with a notch over the top plate and not trusses. When you change the height of the rafter over the top plate you will change the height of the fascia. Every action has a resulting effect. If the size of the rafter increases then the distance up from the top plate is higher, making the roof edge that much higher. That’s given that you are using the same roof pitch and the same size overhang or soffit. You are limited to cutting no more than 30
percent of the rafter notch out of the rafter, but that doesn’t help you get your rafter to sit higher allowing for more insulation. Really the bottom line is that if you want the roof lines to match along with the roof pitch to stay the same, all the characteristics must be the same. The height of the roof line off the plate, the size of the overhang and the roof pitch wants to be the same. You can make the overhang larger, allowing the fascia to lower.
