Windows blinds: Focus on energy efficiency Q. We are considering installing new windows and doors in our 50-year-old home. We have talked to a couple of replacement window companies and they seem to offer only one or two brands of windows. We had seen in the past where blinds were on the interior of the thermopane window panes. Is this option still available and in which brands? Thank you. — Jill of Kendallville A. Blinds can be troublesome; for JEFF DEAHL example, pulling on the wrong side of the string and the shades becoming lopsided. They can be a pain to clean, but window treatments of this type can be upgraded to have many features.

Blinds can also be cumbersome if you want to open or close the windows but with interior blinds the windows must be closed anyways. Yes, blinds can come in a couple of brands with interior blinds between the panes but that doesn’t eliminate the problems described. Pella offers blinds on the interior of a non-sealed thermopane unit but now it means when you want to clean the blinds you have to take off the interior glass pane. Most of the brands that have blinds on the interior of thermopane sealed units require a magnetic slide that operates the blinds, in my opinion something else to go wrong with the window. If the blind is inside the sealed thermopane unit they typically don’t come with the gas filled option which can make them lower in efficiency. Interior blinds on sealed units are

more common on exterior doors though and are more functional because the door is typically closed. Interior blinds do cost more than traditional blinds. Good energy-efficient windows should be your primary focus when replacing your windows. Andersen has a great option where the window is a triple glazed unit where the sealed thermopane energy-efficient unit is on the outside. The blinds are between the sealed unit and the removable glazing on the inside. Remodeling contractors will have more brand options than replacement window companies. JEFF DEAHL is past president of the

Builders Association of Northeast Indiana. Questions for the Square Corners column may be submitted at ba-ni.com or email info@ba-ni.com.

So you want a new kitchen? Start planning really early, and other tips to help make a renovation go smoothly the eventual resale value of your home. “People move a lot these days, and countertops and flooring always come up in home ads,” Allen says.

Measure, and measure again

AP

Semihandmade shows a kitchen designed by Samantha Gluck. Semihandmade, a Los Angeles company, makes cabinets, drawer fronts and accessories specifically made to fit IKEA cabinet boxes. Whether you’re considering using your own architect, a kitchen planner hired through a store like IKEA or an online planning service, professionals suggest you start planning way ahead. Think about your specific needs. Measure well. And be realistic about how long it all will take.

(AP) — So you want a new kitchen? Whether you’re considering designing a kitchen using your own architect, a kitchen planner hired through a store like IKEA or Home Depot, or an online planning service, professionals suggest keeping a few things in mind.

Plan ahead, plan way ahead

“Many people start planning their kitchen a year ahead of time, and that’s about right,” says John Allen, a services planner at IKEA in the United States. “The more you’ve worked out what you want ahead of time, the more smoothly things will go once you start working with a kitchen planner.” Be as specific as you can about what you like and how much you can spend. “If you already know exactly which appliances you want, and what kind of sink, that helps a lot,” Allen says. Changing a fridge or range halfway through the planning can throw everything off, since even an inch or two difference in appliance dimensions could mean rethinking all the cabinets.

Make your kitchen work for you

Do you have kids? Are you

right-handed or left-handed? Will more than one person be cooking at the same time? The answers to questions like these affect the placement of microwave, dishwasher, sink, cabinet, kitchen island and more. “If you’re 5 feet tall, 40-inch cabinets may not be ideal for you,” Allen says. And just because you’re going with one company for kitchen planning and cabinet boxes doesn’t mean you can’t use another for cabinet and drawer fronts, decorative drawer pulls and more. For example, Semihandmade, a Los Angeles company, makes cabinets, drawer fronts and accessories specifically made to fit IKEA cabinet boxes. Company founder John McDonald says he can offer more upscale veneers “and can manage a lot of customization work that Ikea can’t do, like special door sizes, doors for appliance fronts, and custom bookcases to match cabinetry.”

Consider resale value, especially with floors and countertops Even if going with a laminate countertop seems tempting and more affordable in the short term, consider the impact your choices will make on

“There’s a saying that goes ‘measure twice, cut once.’ Well for kitchens, I’d say measure three times,” Allen warns. “No matter how new or old your house is, chances are things aren’t quite even. And you’ll need to measure outlets and vents and window frames as well.” There’s more involved than meets the eye, and it often pays to hire a professional to measure the room. “The foundation of everything you do is getting accurate and comprehensive measurements up front,” says Rachel Getz, associate merchant in countertops at Home Depot. For between $99 and $129, Home Depot will send a service provider to measure the kitchen and design the project. IKEA will have your site professionally measured and designed for a refundable $199. “No matter who’s doing your kitchen, it’s worth it to invest a few hundred dollars up front to get things properly measured,” says McDonald.

Know when to cut corners and when to leave it to the pros

“When clients propose installing their own kitchen, I like to ask them if they installed their own water heater or did their own roofing,” says Allen. “If the answer is yes, they can probably manage it. If not, they may want to reconsider.” To save money, he suggests, homeowners might do the disassembly and painting themselves, leaving the installation to the pros.

Be realistic about time frame

Dismantling and preparing the kitchen and flooring ahead of installation will take time. Contractors often take longer than expected, and plumbers and electricians aren’t always available on the day you’ll need them. And even with perfect turnaround time, custom countertops will take at least two weeks, the experts say, and can’t be templated until the cabinets have been installed. Have an alternative space set up with a microwave, tabletop and small fridge.

Err on side of caution when the refrigerator loses power Online: For more about food safety emergencies caused by power outages, see this University of Delaware College of Agriculture & Natural Resources fact sheet: extension.udel.edu/factsheets/ when-the-power-is-out/

Be ready for power outages by keeping freezers full, freezing water containers to fill in the empty spaces. Those containers of water can also be used for drinking if needed, McGarry said. “Keep coolers on hand and buy freezer packs, and keep them frozen for use in the coolers,” she said. As for food, keep a supply of dried foods (beef jerky, crackers, dried fruit, powdered milk, cereal), canned foods (make sure to have a can opener) and high-energy foods (granola bars, protein bars). “Rotate the inventory every six months,” she said.

During an outage:

A residential storm shelter near Langley, Washington, shows a variety of items stockpiled for use should there be a long electrical disruption. Keep enough food and water on hand to sustain several people for at least a week or more and rotate the inventory every six months. Electrical disruptions can happen anytime, anywhere and last for minutes to months. Be prepared.

(AP) — When storms knock out the power, what’s the best way to handle refrigerated or frozen foods? Err on the cautious side. When in doubt, throw the food out. “Food can be very expensive to throw away but not as costly as food-borne illnesses, which can cause lifelong health effects as well as death,” said Joyce McGarry, a food safety educator with Michigan State University. “If any food is suspected to be contaminated, it is not worth the risk, especially for young children, seniors and those with compromised immune systems.” Electrical interruptions are unpredictable. Causes include, severe weather, equipment failure, damage from wildlife, and power-line scrapes with tree limbs, among other things. Disruptions can

extend from minutes to months, and many foods spoil rapidly without refrigeration. “Animal products and cooked plant items are the most problematic from a safety standpoint,” said Sue Snider, a professor of Animal and Food Sciences at the University of Delaware. “Recommendations are not to let these items stay at room temperature for more than two hours.” That doesn’t mean you can’t ease food losses. Buy a small generator or portable solar panels to provide temporary power. Separate your disaster planning into three steps: preparation, measures to take during an outage and things to do once power has been restored.

Preparation

“Keep an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer at all times,” McGarry said. “That will let you know if the food is being stored at the right temperatures.” Refrigerator temperatures should be at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, and freezer temperatures at 0 or below, she said. A refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours if it’s unopened. If you move items into the freezer, it will last 24 to 28 hours, McGarry said.

Once power is restored:

Quickly check food temperature and condition before it refreezes, otherwise you might not be able to determine its safety, Snider said. “You may safely refreeze most foods if they still contain ice crystals or if they have been kept cold (40 degrees or less) and have been thawed no more than 24 to 48 hours,” Snider said. Do not rely on appearance or odor, and never taste food to determine its safety, McGarry said. “Some foods may look and smell fine but if they have been warm too long, they may contain food poisoning bacteria that could make you sick,” she said.

Trimming and tidying: Perennials need care too

Perennials flower year after year, but many still need some attention LEE REICH

The great attraction in growing perennial flowers is that you never have to replant them, at least in theory. This doesn’t make all perennials care-free, though. Few of them let you just sit back to enjoy them year after year once they’re planted. Take coreopsis, for example, a wonderful perennial that ends its first flush of bright yellow blossoms around midsummer. Like a number of other perennial flowers, coreopsis can be overly exuberant in some gardens — mine, for instance. Right now, the plants are threatening to take over the whole flower bed in which they were planted.

Some perennials wander

Coreopsis spreads very effectively by self-sown seeds and by roots that travel underground and then send up shoots (“suckers”) some distance from the mother plant. Both seedlings and root suckers are beginning to elbow out dianthus and other more sedate neighbors. Agastache (sometimes known as anise hyssop), also in that bed, is one plant that can stand up to coreopsis. As a matter of fact, agastache is so aggressive that I might call it a weed, tempting me to remove it altogether once and for all. Like coreopsis, it spreads by seeds and suckering roots. As I pull on those licorice-minty stems, though, their aroma beckons me to leave in at least a few plants. I give in. Fortunately, keeping agastache, coreopsis and similarly exuberant perennials in line is satisfyingly easy. A quick tug on a stem or two will wrench a wayward plant from the ground, roots and all, causing little disturbance to nearby plant roots. (Tug on too many stems at once and they don’t release so easily, or they pull along too big a clump of soil.) If I did want to plant more of any of these perennials, those dislodged stems re-establish quickly at a new site or in flower pots to plant out later.

Some perennials need tidying up

Oriental poppy is another perennial needing some attention in summer. Excess plants may need to be weeded out, but — more important — this plant needs tidying up. Oriental poppy dies back in summer, so I cut back the sad-looking, dying flower stalks and leaves and cart them over to the compost pile. I mentioned that dianthus is well-behaved, yet even this plant needs some attention. Shearing back the stems now that the first flush of bloom is past helps coax another flush of bloom this season or, at least, better bloom next year. Shearing stimulates growth of new, flower-bearing stems and diverts energy that otherwise would go into ripening seeds to new growth and blossoms. Thwarting seed production also prevents at least one means of spread — by

seedlings — of some perennials. Shearing is useful for creeping stems, but cutting back individual flower stalks is the treatment for clump-forming plants. Other plants slated for shearing or cutting back include snow-insummer, delphinium and columbine.

Some perennials need nothing from you

A few perennials do live up to gardeners’ hopes of a plant you set in the ground and then do nothing more than enjoy. Some that come to mind are peony, daylily, hellebore and hosta, all with dense enough foliage to even shade out most weeds. Baby’s-breath and butterfly weed are perennials that also rarely need attention but don’t have dense foliage to shade out weeds. Keep them weeded.
