DESIGN STATEMENT The design of the Newton Medical Center is based on the idea that a medical clinic is designed to either promote a person’s mobility or to get someone moving again. That being said, the phrase that we pulled ideas from the word “motion.” • The building is focused on the extension of circulation areas. Moving from the pharmacy to the waiting room and from the waiting room around the rest of the spaces, visitors are directed through long, naturally lit corridors. There is a strong possibility of the path of a patient never crossing the same location in the building twice in a single visit. • The parking area of the medical center was the first location to provide sustainable features. Parking is located on a largely perforated surface to allow drainage while not sacrificing the stability the cars need. The corridors that are located around the perimeter of the building allow a large amount of natural light in the winter while being shaded in the summer. • When directly entering the waiting room, there is a quickly noticeable contrast dimension. The visitor passes into a covered space that then enters a partially enclosed space and is finally completely surrounded at the entrance to the waiting room. Inside the waiting room the up and down dimensions are linked with the presence of the indoor balcony as well as the exposed stairs and glass elevator. The link is made between tempered and exposed spaces in the link between the waiting room and the pharmacy. From this point, the visitor is able to go from a completely tempered waiting room to a mostly exposed courtyard area to a finally completely exposed trail. • The addition of a trail and multiuse space allows this idea of motion to reach out to all facets of wellness. Therefore, it becomes more than just a place to get you back on your feet. The already healthy client is also encouraged to improve their state of overall wellness. •
