Valemount—a friendly stop on Yellowhead Highway 5—offers a surprising variety of hotels and restaurants in a typical rural and mountain community setting. Valemount is surrounded by the Rockies, the Cariboo and Monashee Mountains. Valemount is your gateway to many natural wonders. Mount Robson Provincial Park, a 20-minute drive from the Village, is home for grizzlies, moose and elk. In August, you can experience the phenomenal chinook salmon spawning at George Hicks Regional Park. Enjoy the wide-open mountain views along the dykes of the Cranberry Marsh Sanctuary—a few kilometres south of the village—and observe the local and migratory wildlife. The sanctuary is home for beaver, otter, moose, deer and over 90 species of birds. There is an adventure around every corner and off the beaten path. Ride your ATV on Canoe Mountain, fish in Kinbasket Lake, or join some whitewater rafting tours on the Fraser. Mount Robson Provincial Park Celebrate

Mount Robson Provincial Park 100 Years 1913 - 2013

Mount Robson day tripS Mount Robson Provincial Park, situated approx. 30 km north-east of Valemount on the way to Jasper, features various hiking routes suitable for all skill and fitness levels. Whether you’re looking for a short jaunt on well-marked trails or prefer venturing into the mountains for an extended backcountry trip, Mount Robson Provincial Park offers it all. You can also hire a local guide or charter a helicopter to access remote alpine areas. The Fraser River Nature Walk is an easy, 2-kilometre stroll, starting from the Robson Meadows Campground. You may spot mountain goats to the southeast on Mount Klapperhom, so bring your binoculars! Other easy hikes include the 4.5-kilometre (one way) Kinney Lake Trail and the 5-kilometre (round trip) Overlander Falls Trail. While relatively easy to navigate, the Berg Lake Trail is quite lengthy at 44 kilometres round-trip and normally takes two days to complete. However, there are day hikes starting at Berg Lake, so many people plan to spend a few days there to have time to explore the incredible surroundings. The Berg Lake Trail leads to Kinney Lake and the base of Mount Robson before entering a valley with spectacular waterfalls. The trail ends at Berg Lake at an elevation of 1,628 m/5,341 ft. Mount Robson Provincial Park offers great wildlife viewing opportunities. Over 182 species of birds have been documented in the park. Mule deer, whitetail deer, moose, elk, and black bears inhabit the lower elevations. On higher trails, grizzly bears, caribou, mountain goats, and mountain sheep are possible sightings. Wildlife observation areas and viewing points are located throughout the park. In 2013 Mount Robson Provincial Park celebrates a double anniversary, the 100th anniversary of its designation, and also marks the 100th Anniversary of the first ascent of Mt Robson, the Monarch of the Canadian Rockies. Mount Robson was designated on March 1st 1913 the second of the BC Parks system. Early travellers, mountaineers and adventure seekers had long recognized the special significance of the area. There had been numerous attempts to summit Mount Robson but on the 31st of July in 1913 upon attaining the summit with his two clients, A. H. MacCarthy and W.W. Foster, Guide Conrad Kain said the famous words, “Gentleman, that’s so far as I can take you“. Mount Robson continues to draw climbers from around the world to test their skills against so worthy a challenge! Mount Robson Park also protects the headwaters of the mighty Fraser River, one of the world’s great salmon rivers, which starts in Mount Robson Park at Fraser Pass and travels 1,375 kilometers to the Strait of Georgia at Vancouver. Residents and Visitors to the area this year have a special opportunity to enjoy the festivities that are planned throughout the summer to commemorate this anniversary. The choices will range from pancake breakfasts to interpretive programs that are presented by well respected experts in their fields, to activities that will test your mettle, such as the Mount Robson Marathon. Along with winter snowmobiling, Valemount offers a unique and breathtaking ATV experience. Leave the thoughts of mud and tire spinning at home and come here to enjoy the scenic backdrops and natural beauty that our area has to offer. From waterfall filled forestry roads, to ride and fish adventures, to scenic panoramic views; Valemount has many natural wonders to offer while responsibly enjoying our valley on an ATV or motorcycle. A must do adventure has to be reaching the summit of Canoe Mountain where all levels of riders can reach a mountain peak of over 8,000 ft /2,400 m utilizing existing old access roads. We want to preserve our natural environment so we highly recommend that your ATV adventure begins with a visit to the Valemount Area Recreation Development Association (VARDA) office or the local Visitor Centre to receive great advice on where and when to go. The VARDA office is located on Cranberry Lake Road right next to our Visitor Centre. BOATING Located amidst amazing scenery, the Kinbasket Marina offers a boat launch and small campground, as well as a playground for the kids. Kinbasket Lake is a large reservoir stretching from Valemount all the way down to the Golden area, with water levels that vary depending on the time of year. To access the Kinbasket Lake area, drive 3.5 km south along Highway 5, watching for the directional signs to the lake. Turn left at the first intersection south of Valemount onto Canoe Road. Remain on this road, cross the train tracks and continue on. You will next come to a junction of the east and west side roads. The marina and designated campgrounds are located on the east side road along with multiple access points to the lake that are great for exploring or picnics on the beach. The Marina is located at the 21 km mark on the east side road. The west side road is rugged and currently not maintained; however, it does it provide multiple access points to the lakeshore as well.

FISHING Are you dreaming of hooking a big one? Surrounded by an abundance of crystal-clear lakes, rivers, creeks and streams, Valemount is a haven for the avid fisherman. Cast your line and you could find species such as bull trout, rocky mountain white fish, rainbow trout, burbot or kokanee on the hook. A memorable fishing experience awaits either the casual fisherman or the experienced angler. Be sure to get a fishing license and check the rules and regulations before going out on your fishing expedition. Licences are available at the Valemount Visitor Centre and Service BC in Valemount. Valemount’s scenery features towering mountain peaks in the Rocky, Monashee and Cariboo Mountains. This breath-taking scenery can be enjoyed in many different ways. Probably the simplest and most satisfying way is hiking on one of our local trails. If a short walk is all you have time for, then the Cranberry Marsh is an easily accessible trail which starts right in front of the Best Western. A quick walk will bring you to the main dike where bird watching opportunities are spectacular, especially in May and June. For the more adventurous, there is everything from a walk along the Swift Creek trail to the Mount Trudeau or Mount McKirdy trails, which take you up into some beautiful alpine terrain.

CRANBERRY MARSH Known locally as the Cranberry Marsh, located south of the Village of Valemount, the Robert W. Starratt Wildlife Sanctuary is an ecological gem. Surrounded by the Monashee Mountains to the south, the Cariboo Mountains to the west, and the Rocky Mountains to the east, Cranberry Marsh is a provincially important waterfowl resting and nesting area, making it one of the finest and most unique bird watching areas in the province. The major portion of this marsh complex was donated by the Starratt family in memory of Robert Starratt. A trail system, complete with two viewing towers, provides visitors with excellent opportunities to view a wide variety of the area’s flora, fauna and mountain landscapes. The marsh is one of the very best locations to see birds not commonly seen in other locations. The beautiful Yellow-Headed Blackbird, the elusive Sora and the graceful Northern Harrier can all be seen and heard. The trail system follows the water control dikes and transitions into a lodgepole pine dominated forest.

If you’re a serious ‘birder’ or just enjoy wildlife viewing in a natural setting, the Cranberry Marsh can provide a memorable experience that will lift your spirit and lighten your heart.

WAR Heroes Museum

VALEMOUNT MUSEUM The Valemount Museum has something for every member of the family. Originally built in 1914 as the Swift Creek Station, it was moved in 1927 and served as the station agent’s home until 1981. The museum offers guided tours through the three levels in the main building. Explore the Railroad Room, which has a model train running through the textual displays, artifacts and, yes, even through the bathroom. One of the museum’s most popular exhibits showcases the life of a trapper and some of his catches and tools. Local artist Margaret McKirdy’s “Little People” is a collection of life-like sculptures of local personalities and culture made with local clay. Visitors to the museum can also find stories about the Japanese internment camps, the history of the Valemount schools, early settlers, logging, farming and lots more. There’s even a CN Rail caboose car outside for you to explore as well as logging and farm equipment in the Museum Annex. Enjoy a walk back in time and visit the Valemount Museum on Main St. Open May 15 – September 30. Admission (cash only) is $8 per family (up to 2 adults and 4 children), $3 per adult, and $2 per child (up to 18 years of age). Located at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #266 in Valemount, the War Heroes Museum houses pictures, uniforms, artifacts and other collectables from members of the legion and their families. The museum displays the history of the Boer War, the First and Second World War, the Korean War and from Peace Keepers presently serving. The aim of the Museum is to show respect for the men and women who fought for our freedom, and to remember the consequences of war. The Legion is located beside the Big Foot Trail; look for the open sign to be out between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm to visit. The Museum can be viewed when the Legion is open or by calling 250.566.4406 in the evenings.

GEORGE HICKS’ REGIONAL PARK If you are looking for a place to relax and stretch your legs, George Hicks’ Regional Park is located across the highway from Valemount, along Swift Creek, next to the Visitor Centre. The park is 2.5 hectares in size and offers a small trail and lookout platform that provides excellent salmon viewing opportunities in late July to mid August. The Chinook salmon come from the Pacific Ocean, up the Fraser River and then enter Swift Creek to spawn. Facilities at George Hicks’ include a large area for RV parking, an information kiosk, picnic tables, and toilets.

Big Foot Trail The Bigfoot Trail is a walking loop in the Village of Valemount with fabulous views of the mountains on all sides. It is approximately four kilometres long and takes about 60 minutes to complete at a smart pace, but allow extra time for sightseeing, browsing and stopping for treats! You’ll meander through the Village past our shops, restaurants, and coffee shops. Stop for a rest at Centennial Park. Visit the library and the museum on the “old side of town”. You’ll see murals, artwork and a large stone Inukshuk.

Just follow the footsteps! The trail begins under the Village of Valemount sign just off Highway 5. Follow the trail east – away from the highway – along 5th Avenue, to the fire hall. Turn left on Elm Street and then the trail angles to the right to 4th Avenue. After passing the Valemount Cemetery, the trail angles to the right through Centennial Park back to 5th Avenue. Continue along 5th Avenue, cross the railway tracks, and turn left on the trail running beside Main Street. Just before the Golden Years Lodge, you’ll see the trail turn left at Dogwood Street. At 4th Avenue, turn right, and follow the trail back to Elm Street and on to 5th Avenue. To your right, you’ll see the Village Sign where you started. You can go either way round the loop. The last officially recorded sighting of Bigfoot was reported by William Roe, a hunter and trapper from Valemount at the site of the old mine on Mica Mountain located just 20 minutes away. Roe made a sworn statement in an Edmonton court on August 26, 1957, stating “…. about six feet tall, almost three feet wide and probably weighing somewhere near 300 pounds. It was covered from head to foot with dark brown, silvertipped hair…” Visit the Visitor Information Centre to learn the full story. But look out for Bigfoot! He may be right behind you!

The Valemount Farmers’ Market runs from July to September, Thursdays, 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The market boasts local vendors providing Make-it, Bake-it or Grow-it products, under the guidelines of BC Association of Famers’ Markets.
