CONCEPTS

THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND IS A HUB OF ACTIVITY IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO WASHINGTON, D.C., MAKING IT A PRIME LOCATION TO BE A TRAM STOP FOR THE PROPOSED ABOVE-GROUND PURPLE LINE METRO RAIL. THE TRAM STOP SITE LOCATION IS ON THE VERY EDGE OF CAMPUS, INTENDING TO FILTER IN USERS FROM ALL DIRECTIONS OF TRAVEL AND ACT AS A CROSSROADS BETWEEN ‘HERE AND THERE’: THE UNIVERSITY AND BEYOND. THIS PAUSE BETWEEN DIRECTION AND PLACE IS DESIGNED TO BE SCULPTURAL AND UNIQUE, WITH BILLOWING FORMS ABOVE TRIANGULAR SEATING AND CONVENIENCE AREAS, AND A CURVED LIGHTING SYSTEM COVERING A CENTRAL PLAZA.

IN RECENT YEARS, WASHINGTON D.C.’S BLAGDEN ALLEY HAS BEEN RISING IN PROMINENCE FOR ITS ARTISTIC APPEAL. THE ADDITION OF A PERFORMING ARTS CENTER WITHIN THE ALLEY PROVIDES NEARBY ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS WITH A CENTER OF CREATIVITY. THE DESIGN OF THE CENTER BLENDS THE ARTS AND PERFORMANCES OCCURING INSIDE WITH THE STREET ART AND ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE BUILDING AND THROUGHOUT THE ALLEY. THE FLUIDITY OF THE DESIGN EMPHASIZES THE BLENDED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ARTS CENTER AND THE ALLEY AND ITS RESIDENTS SURROUNDING IT.

ADAMS MORGAN IS A UNIQUE COMMUNITY IN THE D.C. AREA, WITH A PROMINENT YOUTHFUL POPULATION, AN ARTISTIC FEEL, AND A NIGHTLIFE SCENE. OUR LIBRARY DESIGN DIAGRAMS WERE INFLUENCED BY THE CONCEPTS EXPLORED IN A LIGHT BOX STUDY. THE SKIN ELEMENT OF THE LIBRARY FACADE IS PROMINENT ON BOTH THE EXTERIOR AND THE INTERIOR, AND IS TRANSPARENT ENOUGH TO ALLOW LIGHT TO PASS THROUGH AND ILLUMINATE THE STREET FOR PEDESTRIANS. THE LIBRARY’S FOCUS IS TO COLLECT AND DISPLAY PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKS BY PROFESSIONALS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ALIKE. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND APPRECIATION IS HIGHLIGHTED BY THE BUILDING’S PROGRAM, ALLOWING ROOM FOR PHOTOGRAPHY CLASSES AND THE DISPLAY OF LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKS.

ARTIST’S STUDIO & GARDEN ARTIST’S STUDIO & GARDEN FALL 2016 | ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO I HAND-DRAWING SKETCHUP MODEL-MAKING

IN THIS PROJECT, A THREE-DIMENSIONAL CUBE WAS CREATED WITH INSPIRATION FROM A MONDRIAN PAINTING, AND THEN WAS TRANSFORMED INTO A RESIDENCE. THE RESIDENCE WAS DESIGNED AS A STUDIO APARTMENT TO HOUSE A SCULPTURE ARTIST, AND THE SURROUNDING GARDEN WAS A THRESHOLD THAT COMPLIMENTED THE RESIDENCE. THE WINDOWS OF THE RESIDENCE ARE STRATEGICALLY PLACED IN ALIGNMENT WITH ELEMENTS OF THE GARDEN TO CREATE A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE GARDEN AND THE RESIDENCE. TRAVELING THROUGH THE GARDEN ALSO REVEALS MOMENTS THAT PROVOKE REFLECTION AND THOUGHT, AND WHICH ALSO HIGHLIGHTS PRIVATE AND PUBLIC RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE RESIDENCE.

CONCEPTS

THE APARTMENTS IN D.C.’S BLAGDEN ALLEY HOUSE ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS IN THE RISING NEIGHBORHOOD. THE APARTMENTS ARE LOCATED ACROSS FROM THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER IN BLAGDEN ALLEY, AND A CONNECTION IS FOSTERED BETWEEN THE TWO. THE SITE CONTAINS APARTMENTS, A GALLERY SPACE, AND A COURTYARD. THE GALLERY CONNECTED TO THE APARTMENTS IS THE BRIDGE BETWEEN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE REALMS OF THE ALLEY, AND THE ADJACENT COURTYARD IS A FLEXIBLE EXTENSION OF THE GALLERY THAT IS WELCOMING TO ALL VISITORS TO BLADGEN ALLEY. THE CONTEMPORARY, LOW-RISE APARTMENTS RESPOND TO THE GROWTH OF THE PROMINENCE OF ART IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHILE FOSTERING COMMUNITY BETWEEN RESIDENTS, VISITORS, AND THE SURROUNDING LOCATIONS.
