A NEW ERA OF EXPOS Why an online Expo? Education has slowly become more online and digital over the last decades. Lockdowns in reaction to Covid-19 have accelerated this trend as millions of children worldwide could not attend school and were forced to make use of online education. The homeschool expo event organizers, SA Homeschoolers and KragDag, have been exploring online expo’s for some time already, because of certain benefits that these expo’s have. The lockdown served to accelerate these plans.

A Few Reasons to attend? • VARIETY OF VENDORS: Shop for curriculum, supplies, and accessories all from the comfort of your own home ! No dress code! • PRESENTATIONS ON DEMAND: No need to pick and choose speakers based on a preset schedule. Watch them all when YOU are ready! • INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS: Live Questions and Answers. • FREE ADMISSION: Get access to all the exhibitors and speakers of a traditional expo, and more, with ZERO cost! • NONE OF THE HASSLES: No travelling! No parking nightmares! Just peaceful happy expo-ing! •

How does it work? The Online Home Education Expo - Africa 2020 is an ONLINE convention for homeschoolers, and those curious about homeschooling, to see speakers and exhibitors and take advantage of the ease of buying educational resources online. Before and during the event, attendees register for the event with their personal contact information. Once registered, and as soon as the expo´s virtual doors have opened, they will have full and immediate access to all of the speakers and Exhibitor stalls for the duration of the event. All speaker sessions are pre-recorded and on-demand. So, attendees can access them 24 hours a day for the full five days. Exhibitor stalls are also available 24 hours a day for the full five days. Exhibitor can decide during which time they will be available for live chats with attendees - an attendee will still be able to leave a message in the Chat Box when the Exhibitor is not on duty.

IMAGINE YOUR

HOMESCHOOL T

he current education system is outdated, and in many ways does not meet the needs of the twenty first century. AEE develops innovative curriculum, learning materials and education solutions which facilitate advanced learning, both in schools and at home. THE HOME EDUCATION SYSTEM The system is built upon a personalised system of instruction. This means learners are taught through instruction-based learning materials and the parent becomes a facilitator of learning rather than the one with all the answers. Active learning replaces passive learning which enhances both discovery and mastery of content. The curriculum (Grade R – 12) is presented in relatively small, very achievable units of study which enable learners to set goals, work steadily and take responsibility for their progress. The curriculum is supplemented by online learning through LearnCloud and Online School. Learners are able to pursue a National Senior Certificate (NSC) through the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) or alternatively a USA accredited A.C.E. (Accelerated Christian Education) exit qualification. LEARNCLOUD The A.C.E Home Education curriculum incorporates blended learning through the AEE LearnCloud online portal. LearnCloud provides a complete digital learning experience with access to a world of exciting educational content that harnesses the power of eLearning and unlocks the full potential of every child. WHAT IS BLENDED LEARNING? Blended learning allows learners to learn through a complimentary mix of real life experiences as well as paper-based and online materials. This platform allows learners to

Effective Education at Home

Are you looking for a unique opportunity to be personally involved in your child’s education?

review material, do their own research, engage with an online teacher and gives them access to a range of up-to-date content in a variety of forms and with an array of opinions. ONLINE SCHOOL Learners who pursue the NSC through the IEB continue with the blended learning approach in the high school phase via the Online School. The Online School has an exceptional track record, and a curriculum designed with a global culture of agility and technology where our learners are positioned as academic leaders. A high level of interaction between learner and specialist teaching staff is established. With individualised attention your child has the best chance at achieving success in a world that never stops changing. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A.C.E. HOME EDUCATION? Personalised System of Instruction Through this system, the pressure to know everything is taken off of parents’ shoulders and they can assume their original role as guides or facilitators of their child’s learning.

Independence and Critical Thinking Through an active learning approach, learners are taught to work independently and think critically, valuable skills they can apply in every aspect of their lives moving forward. Taking Responsibility The A.C.E. curriculum teaches learners to set and meet individual learning goals, which not only enables them to work at their own pace but also motivates them to take responsibility for their own learning. HOW WILL I BE EQUIPPED TO HOME SCHOOL MY CHILD? A.C.E. further supports parents by providing a customised Home Education starter kit, ongoing training activities and academic advice through A.C.E.’s Home Education Academies and access to local and international school leaving certificates. In addition to this, A.C.E. provides you with peace of mind through the quarterly monitoring of your child’s home education quality and offers events such as field trips and opportunities for socialisation.

Valenture Institute: Flipping ‘traditional’ online learning on its head Homeschooling, online education, remote learning: what’s the real difference? All of these learning models have seen very little change over the last few years much like traditional brick and mortar schools. A lot of responsibility fell to parents who had to teach their kids at home, and students were left unmotivated as they watched pre-recorded lessons with no real connection to their teacher or even knowing the names of their classmates. Then COVID-19 rolled around, which forced teachers and students to adapt. Suddenly traditional schools had to scramble to adopt online learning practices and tools they’ve never used before as society went into full-on lockdown mode. ‘Traditional’ online learning has been predominantly a one-dimensional learning space as social-emotional learning has largely been left out of the equation. The holistic development of anyone, be that a student or adult, is multifaceted and by approaching any form of learning in a manner that’s flat is, ultimately, flawed. Established in September 2019, global private online high school, Valenture Institute, recognises that everyone learns differently and that students need to be considered individually. It’s not just about what learners learn, rather it’s more about how they learn and apply that information. Valenture students follow an internationally-recognised British (Pearson Edexcel) curriculum which is much more focused on application rather than recalling information. Students, therefore, learn skills that are useful in their everyday lives, both as high-schoolers and as young adults advancing to university and beyond. As an example, Valenture teachers employ a ‘flipped classroom’ model where students are provided with learning materials that they’re expected to engage with before they attend a live class or breakout session. “This content

could take the form of notes, screencasts, web resources or videos, etc. This approach allows students more time to deep-dive into content discussions and social interaction in class,” says Sarah Elphick, a Senior English teacher at Valenture Institute. Every touchpoint of a learner’s academic journey needs consideration, and that’s what the school does in both their online-only and boutique campus offerings. They have designed an environment that not only places students in the virtual classroom but that creates meaningful connections. “The technology that we use to connect our students and their teachers also allows us amazing visibility of their progress, we can also see exactly what kinds of outcomes students are struggling with, where we need to target our interventions to help them do the best that they can and we can very quickly see where we need to help learners,” says Lizzy Steenkamp, Head of Learning Technology at Valenture. It’s about finding that fluid sweet spot where pedagogy, technology, and innovation meet. The learning environment is dynamic, interactive, and embraces social-emotional learning as learners are encouraged to be themselves, to show their personalities, and to express their opinions. Every student at Valenture also has access to a student success mentor who guides them along their academic journey. Students are, therefore, continuously supported and able to connect during group calls or private chats. It’s more than just a ‘traditional’ online school, it’s a place of support and personal development that prepares each individual learner to face the real-world and all its challenges head-on. WINGU ACADEMY - THE FUTURE OF THE CLASSROOM

"My daughter enjoys every moment at Wingu." P H O T O B Y MIsabel A R T I NSchimper R . S M I T H-

Lecturer

The University of Pretoria (UP) has seen another edtech startup emerge out of its TuksNovation programme, the institution’s high-tech incubator and accelerator. Wingu Academy is a remote-learning platform that offers educational support to schools, tutoring centres and homeschoolers all over Africa, with live classes and tutorials, interactive online content that is aligned with the fourth industrial revolution, and continuous assessment. Developed by teachers, UP alumni and postgraduate students who hold advanced degrees in respective fields, and in collaboration with researchers at the Wits School of Education, Wingu offers an international curriculum that is relevant globally. There is a focus on student-led learning, gamification, instant constructive feedback and alignment to major international curriculums. The academy caters to learners between the ages of five and 19, who have a wide variety of choices to support individual learning at home, or to supplement a programme followed at a tutoring centre or school. Adult learners have also shown significant interest. “This exceptional online platform presents children with the opportunity to engage with high-tech education innovation with the personal touch of face-to-face teaching,” says Isabel Schimper, a lecturer in Speech-language Pathology and Audiology at UP. “We joined the Wingu family in June 2020. As an academic and a lecturer, I have high expectations of educational content, systems and facilitators or teachers. Our 11-year-old daughter has been homeschooled using the Cambridge curriculum for the past few years due to a health condition. We are truly impressed with the welcoming and supportive online community at Wingu.”

Wingu Academy is suited to full-time learners, those who travel frequently, athletes who need to focus on training but want an internationally recognised education that prepares learners for a university education. Qualifications obtained through Wingu allow for entrance into major international tertiary institutions, including Ivy League and Oxbridge universities. International external exams are written at centres closest to the candidate’s home and are overseen by UK-based examination bodies. “The Wingu teaching methodology is in line with 21st-century teaching principles, which will equip our children with critical and independent thinking, as well as tech skills for the fourth industrial revolution,” says Schimper. The platform is intuitive and interactive, and encourages children to take responsibility by preparing for lessons in a fun way using simulations and secret missions to solve problems. During face-to-face lessons, they get the opportunity to engage with the content, a highly qualified facilitator and their peers. Consolidation of new content is then done through homework activities and online quizzes. My daughter enjoys every moment at Wingu.” The Academy is geared towards equipping learners from all ages with globally relevant skills, including coding, robotics, electronics and foreign languages. “Wingu Academy has created a safe, efficient, quality learning environment online while maintaining face-to-face contact between the educator and child,” says Dr Maria Phillips of Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth. “In each subject, the student interacts with the educator to clarify content, discuss problems and direct learning. In the past month I have seen my teenage daughter’s mood improving and have noticed how much she is enjoying her schoolwork.” 2020(W1)

We see greatness in you! ENROL FOR 2021

Online School for Gr R-12 32 www.brainline.com 2020(W1)

Uninterrupted, quality online school, enabling learners to achieve their National Senior Certificate.

Brainline: The era of online learning is here to stay Many learners find that they do not fit into the current school system. However, the 21st century has paved the way for an alternative form of education, that is built on the latest technology and offers a new and innovative option to learners of the digital age. For more than 30 years Brainline has been a leader in the area of home education, with a virtual school that offers virtual classes as well as assessment from Grade 1 to Grade 12, presented by qualified teachers, with all the elements of a traditional school, but adapted to your own lifestyle. We know that the recent Covid-19 pandemic has reshaped basic education forever and has highlighted the importance of e-learning for the future. Brainline CEO, Coleen Cronje, says never before have we witnessed educational disruption on such a scale. ‘To say COVID-19 has disrupted education is an understatement. As of mid-April, according to UNESCO, 1.5 billion students or roughly 87% of the world’s student population were affected by school closures in 195 countries, from pre-primary to higher education,’ Cronje says. (ref: https:// en.unesco.org/covid19/educationresponse) Cronje says it can never be business as usual and the education will more than ever have to prepare for remote instruction, technology like video conferencing platforms and learning management systems. ‘We have already seen a rise in online educational platforms where traditional classroom and its “talk-and-chalk” way of teaching have been radically changed. This is a true indication of what can be expected in the future and both parents and learners are getting more comfortable with this method of learning,’ she says. But there is a need to look at the cost of e-learning to ensure inclusivity. ‘The digital divide could become more extreme if educational access is dictated by access to the latest technol-

ogies. We have seen network operators coming up with solutions to lower the cost of data but this is something that needs to be escalated for the benefit of education.’ Meanwhile, Brainline has also opened its doors for 2021 registrations and Cronje is confident that many learners who were forced to resort to online schooling will continue and not return to traditional class rooms. ‘We are very excited about the new academic year and our theme for 2021 is ‘We see greatness in you’ Over the last few months we have become a safe haven for many learners who have had to look for alternative options due to the school closures. We know that we have been able to assist them with a successful transition and our goal is to ensure that our learners reach their full potential despite outside circumstances.’ Brainline is IEB recognised. Learners who are enrolled with us to complete their final examinations and who fulfil the requirements for this qualification will receive their National Senior Certificate (NSC), as issued by Umalusi. Evolve Online School: Do the homework before choosing an online school

By: Colin Northmore, Principal of Evolve Online School, a brand of ADvTECH, Africa’s largest private education provider.

Parents and guardians considering online schooling for their children must ensure they properly vet the ability of a school to provide an holistic, meaningful educational experience coupled with excellent academic and emotional support. But just as parents would do their homework before enrolling their child at a contact education institution, they should also ask the right questions before deciding on an online learning institution. Many parents can attest to the frustrations experienced with online learning during lockdown, where the quality of offerings differed markedly. Parents will by now have figured out that what their school offered was more or maybe less effective than what their friends’ children were getting, and clearly not all online delivery models are created equal. So, a first step before deciding on an online school, would be to enquire how efficiently current students of those schools who had to move from contact to online were able to continue their educational journey during lockdown. Online schools have clearly differentiated offerings, and parents should take care to interrogate and clarify a school’s offering before enrolling, and in particular ensure that the curriculum is more than just ‘paper behind glass’. An online school focused on the developing the whole child while ensuring that academic excellence is maintained, must incorporate the following: • Diagnostic testing to determine the exact level of proficiency of a student before placement, and during the educational journey; • Asynchronous learning so that learners can move through content at their own pace and according to their own proficiency, with direct access to teachers who will facilitate extra activation classes; • Synchronous learning where students will also be able to attend live interactive classes, and • Socialisation opportunities with academies,

studios and day camps so that students can mingle with their peers and balance their screen time with green time. Evolve Online School has weekly webinars to allow parents to get a feel for the school’s offering, as well as ask the questions they need answered before enrolling. It is highly recommended that parents attend such virtual events at any school they are considering for their child. Parents should ensure that substantial support is available for students and parents, because online schooling can be a very lonely and frustrating experience if such support is not available, particularly if an online school is merely copying and pasting physical classes into a virtual space. For a rewarding and successful online schooling experience, there should be a strong focus on all skills – foundational, social and emotional. Our children are growing up in a world very different from the one in which we grew up. Things that we, as adults, deal with and take in our stride they are already facing at a very young age. Therefore online schools should offer substantial support to help teach students how to deal with issues such as stress and anxiety, while helping them develop important coping mechanisms, resilience and a growth mindset.

A First in South Africa, A 3D virtual online school

By John Luis CEO & Founder of IVA GLOBAL SCHOOL

IVA Global online school is proud to launch its fascinating and highly engaging 3D virtual school. How do you create a school of the future? This subject is one often discussed and written about. Some believe you must transform the learning environment while others say to focus on pedagogical change. Changing the learning environment has proven to arouse learner’s interest and ultimately increase engagement. The revolutionary 3D virtual learning world allows learners to see, experience and learn things that would otherwise not be possible. Learning environments With years of teaching experience, I have always kept abreast of the progression the educational landscape has followed, monitoring carefully how technology has impacted on teaching and learning. Ultimately what we are striving for is a learning environment that increases student engagement and transforms educational outcomes to align more closely with real-world demands and expectations of school leaving young adults. In IVA’s 3D virtual learning school, students and teachers are represented by avatars walking through a school campus and taking up a seat of choice in a virtual classroom. The design of classrooms varies from, on the one end, a traditional classroom with chairs, four walls and school desks and on the other end, learners find themselves learning in a forest amongst animals or in an aquarium under swimming sharks. Walls, floors and other surfaces can be seamlessly changed to set a different context at the press of a button. Teachers can ask learners to breakaway in groups to do certain activities and groups can teleport themselves to any part of the school. Teachers can teleport the learners back simultaneously after a period, so no time is wasted in resuming the whole class discourse.

An outdoor activity at IVA Global School

The virtual world allows the learners and teachers to have private conversations with other learners in an area of their choice and inside the virtual school campus. In the near future, IVA Global School will look at teaching and learning through running 3D simulations on their virtual campus. For example, fire safety drills, will look and feel just like the actual physical campus. Learners go through a simulation of a fire on campus. Each student’s behaviour and the decisions they make is recorded for discussion with the student after. Learning is undeniably enhanced through such a simulation, which can be repeated as often as the student and teacher feel necessary to advance the student and has application across so many subjects. IVA Global School- A School of the Future As technologies advance, we can expect that these 3D virtual online schools will continue to lead and transform the educational landscape. The world has changed, learning has changed, and learners have changed, and IVA Global School certainly stands out as a School of the Future. Pestalozzi Who? The PESTALOZZI TRUST is the legal defence fund for home and community-based education in South Africa: it supports its members and protects them from unjustified interference by the authorities. Peace of Mind and an Emergency Service Membership of the Trust means that you can educate your children at home lawfully and without unjustified interference. The Trust’s emergency number is available 24/7 for members with urgent problems, eg when the police, social workers or education officials arrive unannounced and demand entry to the family home. The office number is available for general enquiries from members and from the public. In all cases the Trust has been able to assist the family in defusing the conflict without the matter escalating to court cases. It is essential that members contact the Trust immediately when conflict arises. What the Trust does The Pestalozzi Trust is a non-profit Trust governed by a Board of Trustees. It is funded from the fees that member families pay and a small number of unsolicited donations. Funds may only be used to protect the freedom of education. The financial statements of the Trust are audited annually by an independent auditing firm. In 1998 the Trust was established by a group of Christians to protect the rights and freedoms of all families to educate their children at home according to their own religious and/or philosophical convictions and cultural traditions.

meschoolers by promoting knowledge of home education and by negotiating better policy on home education. Ignorance of home education is its greatest enemy. For that reason it is a priority of the Trust to distribute reliab¬le information about home education. The Trust provides its members with information relating to home education, the legal aspects of home education, and parents’ duties, rights and freedoms. The Trust is opposing the tight control over homeschooling families proposed in the BELA Bill and the Policy on Home Education. b. Conflict resolution We keep our members out of court by assisting member families who do get into conflict with the authorities. We strive to resolve conflict before a court case becomes necessary. c. Defence Should our members nevertheless have to appear in court, we carry the cost of a competent legal team and the necessary expert witnesses. What the Trust doesn’t do The Trust does not accept applications from families who already are in conflict with the authorities. Therefore: Join BEFORE you get into trouble! The Trust represents its members, but ONLY in conflicts with organs of the state. This means that it CANNOT represent its members in conflicts (i) between parents about custody of the children and their home education; or (ii) with curriculum suppliers; or (iii) that have their origin in events that precede the commencement of membership. Join the Pestalozzi Trust for peace of mind!

Our task is the following: a. Prevention of conflict: More Knowledge of Home Education and Better Policy We prevent conflict between the authorities and all ho-
