Forgive me if this seems dark, but I saw a documentary that changed me. There's a lot to be said about forgiveness and whether or not we can despite the situation. I think the greatest test of that would be held for any crime that ends in death at the fault of someone else. If we lost a loved one at the hands of another person, we may not ever forgive. I've always said that I would probably try to kill someone if they were to ever bring harm to a loved one. However, my views changed thanks to a documentary called Serving Life that appeared on Oprah's network OWN over the weekend. It's about four guys who are serving anywhere from 50 years to life volunteering to work in a hospice. Their job is to tend to the dying. That to me is the ultimate rehabilitation a criminal can have because not many free men and women could do what they do every day. It takes strength, compassion and a heart to sit, bathe, clean up, wipe the dying’s butt, feed them and provide a sense of peace and family as they transition. Mentally and emotionally it's a sentence far greater than serving time. I think when a person can give of himself in such a way, I think he may deserve a second chance at freedom. Happy 2012! info2@kravemagazine.net

This is a New year and a New YOU! And we are pledging to razzle and dazzle you, the KRAVE Man, with the NEW NEW! This special edition of KRAVE is dedicated to our fans and the foundation of KRAVE – the strong, black man and expression of art and creativity. Although the Mayans ‘predict’ that 2012 is the end of the world, (actually it was the end of their calendar system), this will truly be a year of new beginnings. Our president Barack Obama is up for re-election. You know who WE’RE voting for. The Christian Louboutin men’s store opens. YES! The Olympics. The launch of the new iPhone 5 – of course that’s thrilling! And one of my current interests – Red Tails. A film project that showcases the strength and endurance of our people, amidst adversity. And also a project that is providing our talented people of color with a chance to create magic. There seems to be such a lack of that lately. So with all of these new beginnings I encourage each of you to recall that dream that Dr. Martin Luther and died for those many years ago. 2012 is OUR year! kennyh@kravemagazine.net

06 STYLE FORECAST SPRING PREVIEW 2012 By Porsche Montgomery The key to capturing the style of this upcoming trend is to embrace color. You don’t have to follow every trend you see, but you can update the classic pieces in your existing wardrobe by simply infusing a little color. Remember it’s all up to you, if you love color, go all out, and now is the time. If you aren’t so comfortable, add touches of color to make neutrals like Vintage Khaki and Starfish pop. What kind of color are we talking about? According to the Pantone Men’s Fashion Colors Spring 2012, the bolder the better, Tangerine Tango and Solar Power top the list. From there embrace hues of blue, try Sodalite Blue, Dazzling Blue or Hawaiian Ocean. Check out how our favorite designers are showing you how to do it!

eauty, brains and style are the ultimate triple threat, and Cassie and Andrea Ganesh both have an abundance. These sisters are the owners of the hot new store DEMERARA located in West Village shopping center. The girls have always loved fashion and shopping and inherited an entrepreneurial spirit from their family, so it was natural for them to consider opening a store. Their parents taught them to be leaders, not followers and they have held true to that through their lives. These Westlake natives finished their undergrad and MBAs in the time it would have taken an average student to just finish undergrad and while waiting to start PhD programs, Demerara was born. As the sole buyers for Demerara, Cassie

and Andrea are committed to finding fashion that is not only aesthetically appealing but also has expert quality. They pride themselves on finding new brands and introducing them exclusively to the Dallas market. When asked why they wanted to do both men’s and women’s they said that they didn’t want to exclude an entire market, it’s a good thing because the men’s business does very well. Their target clientele is social, consistent, appreciates great quality and is looking to express themselves through their clothes. So what’s on the horizon for Demerara? New this year, they are starting Sunday Funday 12-5pm, so after you are done with brunch, feel free to do some shopping. The girls will have complimentary cocktails and store promos all day on Sunday. The store design done by Cassie and Andrea lives up to the clothing, it’s aesthetically appealing and quality. The space is built for events, which is something they host with a creative team they've selected along with RAW PR and a host of sponsors on a monthly basis. When it comes to giving back, Demerara’s passion is to participate and host events in benefit of charities of their choice. Also, in Fall 2012, they have plans to produce a clothing line. They describe the line as “contemporary, classy, sophisticated and edgy.” In the future they also plan on opening more stores in the US and eventually internationally. We had to ask these fashionistas what trends KRAVE readers needed to rock for Spring/Summer 2012 and here is what they said “Chinos, hot colors, shorts, polos, oxfords and loafers, cardigans and boat shoes.” Be sure to visit the store and follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates, you won’t be disappointed.

36 A NEW YEAR A NEW YOU!

HOW

TO

Winterize Your Abs Male or female, our eyes are drawn to a person's abdominals ... or gut. To make and maintain a midsection that earns looks of admiration rather than admonishment, certain things have to happen - and others can't happen. Follow Fitness model Allen Elliot's 4 exercises, and you can develop those razor-sharp abs you always wanted.

MEDICINE BALL OBLIQUE TWISTS Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Contract your abs and sit at about a 45 degrees angle. Hold a medicine with both hands directly in front of you Contracting your abs, twist slowly from your torso to your right and touch the medicine ball to the floor beside you. Quickly, but smoothly, contract your abs and twist your torso and touch the medicine ball to the other side. Repeat for the desired number of reps.

ALLEN ELLIOT Atlanta, GA 6’0 • 180 lbs.

SWISS BALL REVERSE CRUNCH Step 1: Face away from the Swiss ball. Place hands in front of you and place your feet on the Swiss ball. Step 2: Exhale as you bring your knees in towards your chest. Inhale as you straighten your legs out.

3 SETS OF 25

SWISS BALL CRUNCHES Step 1: Lie on the Swiss ball with your back arched around the ball and your head up. Keep your head and neck in line with your back. Step 2: To contract abs, inhale and raise your head to the ceiling while keeping your back stable on the ball and your legs bent. Slowly exhale and lower your head back to the starting position.

3 SETS OF 25

MODIFIED V-UPS Lie flat on the floor (or exercise mat) on your back with your arms extended straight back behind your head and your legs extended also while grasping the Swiss Ball. This will be your starting position. As you exhale, bend at the waist while simultaneously raising your legs and arms to meet in a jackknife position. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

TIP: The legs should be extended and lifted at approximately a 35-45 degree angle from the floor and the arms should be extended and parallel to your legs. The upper torso should be off the floor. While inhaling, lower your arms and legs back to the starting position.
