OUR STORY

The storied tale of Kravet lnc.’s centuries-old history starts in 1903, when Samuel Kravet arrived in New York City from Russia. With a passion for men’s fashion and luxury tailoring, he started selling buttons, elastics and zippers for apparel. He would often visit the luxurious homes of his clients, which inspired a new endeavor: trimmings, tassels and tie-backs for the home.

Woven together through the years thread by thread with people, places and passion, Kravet has grown in size, all the while remaining true to its founding principles: extraordinary quality, unwavering integrity and uncompromising commitment to the industry.

Five generations and over 100 years later, these same principles continue to act as Kravet’s guiding light. At Kravet, style curators search far and wide to supply only the finest, most luxurious and unique product in the world.

Every idea and vision at Kravet is stitched together, each piece an essential fiber in our vibrant tapestry, to tell one story.

Along the way, Kravet has expanded to encompass a distinct global style, with international brands Lee Jofa, GP & J Baker, Brunschwig & Fils and Donghia as well as a renowned archive housing antique documents from all corners of the earth. Lee Jofa was founded as a result of a modern merger between two companies: Arthur H. Lee & Company and Johnson & Faulkner (Jofa). The distinctly traditional English look and feel of its products propelled the company to heightened popularity, with many designs stiII active and current in the Iine to this day.

Today Lee Jofa distributes fabric, trimmings, wallcovering, carpet and furniture to a worldwide network of discerning design professionals. Through the strategic aquisition of companies like Lee Jofa Modern, Lee Jofa has added a contemporary, streamlined point of view to its traditional and classic product offerings. Its licensing division reflects the very best designers and tastemakers from the world of interiors and fashion, and its English heritage continues to inform the quality and point of view of the company.

Founded in 1884 by brothers George Percival and James Baker, GP & J Baker has been producing beautiful prints, weaves and wallpapers for more than 125 years. More than a century of discerning collecting has resulted in one of the largest and most exciting privately owned textile archives in the world. Designs from this rich resource are skillfully adapted to meet with today’s transitional tastes and color palettes and are complemented by luxurious and eclectic weaves,

The company continues to expand globally with world-wide representation of its brands which include Threads, the first new luxury brand to be launched within the industry in more than 10 years, and Baker Lifestyles, the younger brand of the group. Responsible too for the distribution of Kravet, Brunschwig & Fils and Lee Jofa, GP & J Baker also produces Mulberry Home fabrics, wallpapers and accessories under license,

As a holder of the Royal Warrant since 1984, GP & J Baker provides fabrics that are used in Royal residences both at home and abroad.

A historic collaboration - fashion house H&M delved through the archives of GP & J Baker to bring several treasured patterns to life in this illustrious womenswear collection. The result was a sophisticated and romantic assortment of light and sheer silhouettes with exquisite detailing, intended to mirror the intricate needlework of Baker’s high-market upholstery.

From grand rooms in the White House and the Palace of Versailles to romantic country retreats in cottages and seaside homes, Brunschwig & Fils fabrics have appeared for more than a century in the world’s most beautiful and iconic interiors. Brunschwig & Fils is the canon of high quality decorative textiles in the home furnishings industry, and today its many other products include wallpaper, trimmings and upholstered furniture.

The history of the company dates back to 1891, when it was founded by Achille Brunschwig. In 1925 Roger Brunschwig, son of Achille, opened a New York office on Madison Avenue. Good design has been at the firm’s heart and soul from the beginning, and each generation acknowledges that French style - in decor, fashion, design, color and the art of living - has been paramount for centuries. To translate this spirit for today’s taste, in America and around the world, is the ongoing mission of Brunschwig & Fils.

The story of Donghia begins with the man, himself. Born in 1935 as the son of a tailor, Angelo Donghia found his first passion while honing his craft in the family’s tailoring business. His pursuit of a career in the arts led him to Interior Design - the perfect creative outlet combining Angelo’s innate flair for design with his keen eye for detail. Angelo arrived at fame during the 1970’s: an era of celebrity and decadence. The extraordinary life he led was an extension of his unique design philosophy - the fusion of glamour and comfort. He introduced the world to this new language of luxury. He believed in custom tailoring a room around a person’s lifestyle that fits with the ease of a perfectly tailored suit
