Introduction Worship: The Place of True Relief Was there ever a time in your life when you felt that you were missing out on everything God has for your life? Although you know God’s promises, do you ever feel like you somehow can’t see His participation in your life? Have you ever been frustrated because it seemed that others were experiencing God’s promises while you were left out? If so, you’re not alone. I can remember ‘feeling’ that I had no choice but to look for other ways out, other means of comfort, other sources for provision because it ‘seemed’ that God would not show up, or just chose not to respond to my needs. Why, when the Bible promised He would keep me, were there times when I didn’t feel kept; when the Bible promised peace and stability, my life felt completely out of control; and when the Bible promised safety I felt absolutely insecure? The Bible says that God cannot lie. With this being true, the problem had to be with me. This is a challenge for 6
Introduction many people. We know God promises to provide, to be our help, to be our deliverer--So why don’t we experience what He promises? Why don’t we feel kept, provided for, or have wisdom from God? Why aren’t we experiencing all who God is to us? One of the answers, as the Lord revealed to me, simply lies in worship. The Bible tells us that worship is one of our main purposes for existence: “So that we who first hoped in Christ [who first put our confidence in Him have been destined and appointed to] live for the praise of His glory!” (Ephesians 1:12 AMP). Although God gives us all the choice to love, worship, and serve Him out of a true desire, worship is probably the most undervalued and least practiced part of the daily Christian walk. Ninety-eight percent of Christians polled do not spend regular time with God. Worship is more than the Sunday morning corporate experience of coming to a building with other believers, being prompted to sing designated songs and lift our hands to the Lord. It is often reduced to a space-filler, a time for people to get to their seats and spectate while the order of service is carried out. Apart from Sunday service, and the ten to twenty minutes designated as the “Praise and Worship” element of the service, many Christians have yet to experience the true value of entering into and enjoying God’s presence in one-on-one, personal, and intimate worship time.

Introduction Our personal worship time is an opportunity for us to connect with the Lord. It is our time to share our love and adoration for Him; to turn our burdens and problems over to Him; to hear instruction; and to be empowered by Him to maintain our joy, peace, and faith in spite of what may be happening all around us. “What does worship have to do with providing relief from the challenges of life?” The Bible says “in Him we live, move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28 NIV). How can we survive and thrive in life if we do not take time to connect to our source of life? Jesus said, “I am the vine and you are the branches”. If you think about a grape vine, the branches only get nutrients and are alive and thriving when they are connected to the branch. When it’s disconnected what happens? The branch turns brown and dies when weather conditions are unsuitable. Now, imagine that same branch trying to survive in harsh weather? The same can be said of our lives, especially in times of difficulty. How can we get all that we need to live an abundant life that glorifies God if we do not connect with Him on a regular basis to care for us, to nourish us, and to give us guidance? God is the source of our lives--not our jobs, not our friends, not our possessions. We can live and make it without any of those things, but if we do not have God operating in our lives we will be living life at an emotional, mental, spiritual, and possibly even physical handicap. Worship is the means 8
Introduction by which we access the presence of God to build relationship with Him and also to receive what He has for us in order to sustain our lives. It is a vital time where God strengthens and recharges us in times of stress and uncertainty. “If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.” (2 Chronicles 20:9 NIV) This resource will help you understand the value of personal worship time with God, understand what that personal time affords, and how to worship and make the most of experiencing the presence of God.
