The workbook Super Creative Thinking Activities 2 is intended for students attending the first grade of primary school. Depending on their reading abilities, first-graders may use it on a self-study basis or with help from their parents or teachers, either in extended stay or during regular classes.

The topics and exercises follow the existing Program of Education and Teaching for the First Grade of Primary Education and Upbringing and they provide the opportunity to practise the subject matter taught at school in an entertaining manner, either at home or in school. Teachers may use individual exercises for work in the introductory or ending part of their lessons as an additional material for children who are able to complete faster the exercises envisaged for them, and they may also use entire thematic units, where there is multiple correlation between program contents. Such inter-subject correlation is one of the key elements of the contemporary relationship with education and life.

Exercises in the workbook Super Creative Thinking Activities 2 are not a test of knowledge. Some exercises have two or more correct solutions. In many exercises children are required to express their own opinion. In such cases, one should take into consideration every answer related to the question asked and encourage the child to be open and frank.

The goal of the authors of this workbook is to encourage children to independently and actively reach solutions to the exercises and problematic situations. Exploration exercises, exercises where a personal opinion or attitude needs to be expressed, as well as exercises for creation and construction, develop logical and critical thinking in children. Spontaneously and through game-playing, these exercises help students acquire many life skills.

SUMMER VACATION

Sofie and Roger are again at school. Their first summer vacation has just ended and they can’t wait to tell one another about all the things they did. Sofie first starts excitedly telling her story.

– We slept in tents that we first had to pitch by ourselves! It was the first time I had partaken in this – Sofie tells excitedly. – The first night, I was scared of all those sounds from the forest. I almost called mom and dad to take me home. Afterwards, I got so used to this that those sounds made me fall asleep. In the evening, we sat outside. Never in my whole life had I seen so many stars in the sky. And it was the first time I had ever seen an actual firefly! Imagine, we were making a real big camp fire! – Sofie can barely catch her breath as she talks with all that excitement.

– And what did you, Roger, do?

– Just as every year, in that same little house at the seaside. It was when my friend Jim came that the adventure began. Once we pitched a tent and spent a night in it. Yes, it was in our yard, but still it was exciting. I was scared to death when I heard some rustling and strange noises! It turned out that this was just a hedgehog –Roger laughs while Sofie looks at him with her eyes wide open.

People have admired the stars since a long time ago. They observed the starry sky and perceived large clusters of stars –constellations. They named constellations after the things the constellations resembled the most. A constellation is made up of a multitude of stars, but, in the sky, we recognize them by those stars that are best seen. Constellations are particularly well visible during clear summer evenings, outside of big settlements. In big cities it is difficult to see constellations due to much artificial light.

Using Roger’s and Jim’s secret code from the previous page, discover the names of the constellations that Sofie saw in the camp. Try to find them in the night sky when the opportunity for this arises.

Roger and Jim competed against each other in diving. They agreed that it would be possible to win points only if they managed to take a starfish, a sea urchin or a seashell out of the sea. Each one of the sea animals carried a certain number of points. Calculate how many animals were taken out of the sea by either of them and enter their values into the table. Then calculate the total number of points won by either of the boys. Who won? Mark the name of the winner.

Roger found: Jim found:

Don’t worry! They returned all the sea animals back to the sea.

A STORY OF BREAD

In a little but comfortable house lived a hen, a pig, and a tomcat. The hen worked hard all day long. While she worked, the pig carefreely rolled in the mud and the tomcat basked in the sun and purred. One day, while she was puttering around in the yard, the hen found several grains of wheat.

– Who will help me sow this wheat? – the hen asked.

– I can’t! – the pig grunted.

– I can’t help you either! – the tomcat purred lazily.

– Then I will sow it alone – the hen said and sowed the wheat.

When the wheat became ripe, the hen asked who would help her reap the wheat.

– I can’t! – the pig grunted.

– I can’t help you either! – the tomcat purred lazily.

– Then I will reap it alone – the hen said.

When the wheat was reaped, the hen asked:

– Who will take the grains to the mill?

– I can’t! – the pig grunted.

– I can’t do it either! – the tomcat purred lazily.

Then the hen ground the wheat alone, returned with a full sack of flour, and asked:

– Who will help me make bread?

– We can’t! – the pig and the tomcat exclaimed.

– Then I will make it alone – the hen said.

Soon the house was filled with the gorgeous aroma of hot bread. The pig and the tomcat ran into the kitchen.

– I feel like eating bread – the pig grunted.

– Me too, although I am not very fond of it, but I am so hungry that I could eat even bread – the tomcat purred.

– No, you won’t! – the hen said – I sowed the wheat alone, I reaped it alone and took the grains to the mill. I made bread alone –and alone I will eat it!
