To the ones who stayed

TO ALL THE DEAR FATHERS,

orking in children and youth W ministry I reflect upon all the shattered hearts, sad, angry or even nonchalant facial expressions when the word ‘father’ is expressed. I’m reminded of all the heart-breaking narratives of children who are so in need of the presence of their dad, but also children who want absolutely nothing to do with their father due to his absence; whether emotionally or physically. Therefore, today I would like to celebrate the ones who stuck around.

Dadda, Daddy, Dad, Papa, Pops -your different names are evidence of the versatility of your character.

Thank you to every dad who strives to be the best father. Some of you didn’t have much guidance on how to be one, yet you’re still out here correcting the mistakes of the generation that came before you. For that, I salute you. To all the ones who made mistakes, admitted their faults and fixed them, you are amazing. You are celebrated for working tirelessly to physically provide, by putting food on the table, pay school fees and ensure that your children are well cared for.

Beyond that, well done for considering the emotional and spiritual needs of your children, by spending quality time with them, making memories, teaching them valuable life lessons or skills; or by modelling biblical character and prayers.

To all the fathers who teaches their daughters that she’s worthy of respect, love and care and teaches their sons that respecting a woman and society in general is what will make of them a ‘cool dude’, you are a game changer.

I commend you for changing the negative narratives around fatherhood. May you be blessed and inspired to keep on doing the best you can. Your sons and daughters will certainly benefit from the investment of your presence in their lives. I’m encouraged by men and fathers who aim to mentor, guide, inspire and teach not only their own children but also the boys and girls, in their communities who desperately need the presence of a father. To all the fathers who work hard, to build a good life for their children, we salute you. To all the fathers wondering if they’re doing a good enough job, you are.

May you be the best father you could be.

You are loved, appreciated and needed.

You are the heroes of our time. So, to the one who stayed, when they could’ve left.
