SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 17 - 19, 2012

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/ taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.

Neighborly reminder

This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard - for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!

Back to School Safety Tips

With summer coming to an end and the start of the school year just around the corner, Safe Kids USA reminds parents and drivers to do their part to keep kids safe as they walk to school. Parents should be proactive and take the time to talk about safety with their kids before they head back to school. Adults can teach and model the following safety behaviors that all children should follow, even if they don’t walk to school every day. Here are some simple reminders for drivers: • Slow down and be especially alert in the residential neighborhoods and school zones • Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs • Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully • Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours • Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Put down your phone and don’t talk or text while driving Reminder for your kids: • They should cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old • Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks • Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars • Make sure they always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them www.safekids.org Published by: Krenek Printing 7102 Glen Chase Ct • Houston, TX 77095 • 281-463-8649

Back to school Survival Tips For Kids

Here are some more things that can help put you ahead in school: • The old saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” is never more true than when you’re going to school. Students are more alert and perform better in class if they eat a good breakfast. • Get enough sleep. Studies show that teens need at least 8½ hours of sleep each night to feel rested. Sleep deprivation can lead students to fall asleep in class (embarrassing if you’re caught!) and can also make it hard to concentrate. It can be more productive to get the sleep you need than it is to stay up late cramming: A recent study found that students who got adequate sleep before a math test were nearly three times more likely to figure out the problem than those who stayed up all night. • Do more at school and you’ll have less to do at home. Take advantage of those times during the school day when you’re not in class: Review notes, go to the library or computer lab, get a head-start on your homework, or research that big term paper. You’ll be thankful later while you’re at the mall or a concert and your classmates are stuck at home cramming! • One of the best ways to make friends and learn your way around is by joining school clubs, sports teams, and activities. Even if you can’t kick a 30-yard field goal or sing a solo, getting involved in other ways — going to a school play, helping with a bake sale, or cheering on friends at a swim meet — can help you feel like a part of things. School is a time to make friends and try new things, but it’s also a place to learn skills like organization and decision making that will come in handy for the rest of your life.

AUGUST……DID YOU KNOW?

• Peridot and Sardinyx are the birthstones? Characteristic is Married Happiness? Flowers are Poppy and Gladiolus? • Lincoln penny was issued on August 2, 1909. • Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, on his first voyage across the Atlantic on August 3, 1492. • An American bomber dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare, on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. • Richard M. Johnson, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Charles F. Kettering. • The following were admitted as part of the United States: Colorado, Missouri and Hawaii.

GARDEN TIPS FOR August

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

On April 29th, Copper Corners Service Unit had a “Chalk in the Park” event, at the Langham Creek YMCA. Girls and their families came together to create sidewalk chalk art representing things that Girl Scouts enjoy doing. Older Scouts served snow cones and popcorn and everyone joined in a sing along under the pavilion that finished up with a Friendship Circle. We would like to express special thanks to the Langham Creek YMCA for making this afternoon event possible. Thanks also to Julie Mayer, the event organizer and to all those who helped make it a success. We are all looking forward to the B.I.G. Council event on September 29th at the George R. Brown Convention Center. It will be a Believe in Girls event, as well as an event for every Girl Scout in GSSJC. That makes for one really BIG event and a great chance to learn about all the opportunities available in San Jacinto Council. Check your Golden Link or the GSSJC website for more information. While summer is a time for Girl Scouts and their leaders to enjoy time with friends and family, many of our girls have been attending council camps. GSSJC offers resident, day and twilight camps and there are many things to do there. Whether it is trail riding at Misty Meadows, learning to crew a “big boat” at Casa Mare or one of the many other camp activities, we know that they are having fun, learning new skills and making friends. Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council Copper Corners Service Unit serves all girls in the residence areas for Lowery, Birkes, Fiest Elementary Schools, Aragon and Labay Middle Schools and corresponding high schools. Once school is back in session, we will be holding rallies to form new troops and welcome new scouts and new leaders. Don’t forget that girls can get involved

BOY SCOUT TROOP 996 - Four Scouts Honored with Eagle Rank

Four Eagle Scouts held a combined court of honor celebrating their attainment of Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. The four young men, all of troop 996, sponsored by the Copperfield Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are Andrew Juergens, Larry Heki, Quinn Taylor and Ryan Patrick. Only about five percent of Boy Scouts persevere to reach the rank of Eagle, so having four from one troop at the same time is outstanding. Each Eagle Scout has completed at least 21 merit badges and has served in a series of leadership roles and he must complete a self-directed major project.

Texas Representative Duane Bohac honored four Eagle Scouts at their court of honor: from left: Ryan Patrick Andrew Juergens, Rep. Bohac, Bishop Ron Barrow (leader of the church sponsoring Troop 996), Larry Heki and Quinn Taylor.

The accomplishment says much about the character of the young man, but also much about his scout leaders and parents, who have encouraged him over many years. During the June 27th court of honor ceremony, Texas Rep. Duane Bohac honored the Eagles as guest speaker. Andrew Juergens is the son of Kurt and Gretchen Juergens. He is about to start his senior year at Langham Creek High School. His Eagle project was to collect used baseball and softball equipment, donated to RBI (Recycled Baseball Items). The baseball equipment will be used for inner city baseball teams and the softball equipment will be sent to troops overseas. Larry Heki is the son of Scott and Charlotte Heki. He graduated from Langham Creek High School in 2010. Larry actually completed his Eagle requirements last summer, but left for a year of study at Brigham Young University before there was time to celebrate with a court of honor. His Eagle project was done

for the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District’s Nature Trails facility. It was a conservation project in which he led and participated in the removal of an invasive species of water plant, the parrotfeather, a noxious weed that is a native water plant of the Amazon River in South America. He also built two new floating platforms to place in the pond for the turtles, ducks and other wildlife to use to sun themselves or to rest on. Larry has been studying chemistry and leaves in late August to serve as a missionary for two years in Finland. Quinn Taylor is the son of Tim and Janet Taylor and the third in the family to earn the rank of Eagle. His project was completed for Houston Marine Moms. He organized the collection and sorting of donations used for care packages sent to Marines serving in Afghanistan. Quinn is a well-known basketball player for Langham Creek High School. He will be attending Utah State University on a basketball scholarship this fall, studying civil engineering. After his freshman year he plans to serve as a missionary for two years before returning to sports and school. Ryan Patrick is also a basketball player. It was through his basketball friendship with Quinn Taylor, starting in third grade, that Ryan learned of scouting and got involved in Troop 996. He is the son of Rich and Jeannie Patrick. His project was to make large animal feeders for Boys and Girls Country. Many of the students at Boys and Girls Country participate in FFA (Future Farmers of America) competitions with the hope of earning college scholarships. Ryan’s project was to help them in their efforts. Ryan will be attending Texas A&M University this fall, in the Mays School of Business.

There are many ways in which you can contribute to the Pink Tie Affair as either a sponsor or a donor. The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Code, Section 501(c) 3 and all qualified donations made to ZTA Foundation are tax-deductable, so please consider helping us make a difference in the lives of women everywhere.

The Pink Tie Affair fundraising event, through the ZTA Foundation, supports breast cancer education and awareness, the Komen Race for the Cure® Survivor program, scholarships, educational programming and leadership development. Through our affiliations with The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Yoplait, The NFL and Self Magazine, the ZTA Foundation has donated millions of dollars to this worthy cause. As one of the leading causes of death in women, breast cancer affects us all. We had a great turnout for last year’s first annual, raising $7000 toward our cause and anticipate an even better 2012. If you are interested in purchasing tickets or other ways of contributing to the event, please contact Natalie Taylor at daisemail@comcast.net or www.cypresszta.com, our website. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, November 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

DECIBELLES (A Barbershop Chorus)

47 YEARS EXPERIENCE

We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or decibelle@ comcast.net (email). We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes.
