AUGUST……DID YOU KNOW?

• Peridot and Sardinyx are the birthstones? Characteristic is Married Happiness? Flowers are Poppy and Gladiolus? • Lincoln penny was issued on August 2, 1909. • Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, on his first voyage across the Atlantic on August 3, 1492. • An American bomber dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare, on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. • Richard M. Nixon became the first U.S. President ever to resign from office on August 9, 1974 • Smithsonian Institution founded on August 10, 1846. • Thomas Edison invented the phonograph on August 12, 1877. • U.S. Social Security Act approved on August 14, 1935. • British troops captured Washington, D.C., and burned the White House on August 24, 1814. • Amendment 19, giving women in the United States the right to vote, proclaimed on August 26, 1920. • Oil production began commercially in the United States when Edwin Laurentine Drake struck oil on August 27, 1859. • More than 200,000 civil rights demonstrators staged a march on Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. • Some important people in history born in August: Francis Scott Key, (Alfred) Lord Tennyson, Herbert Hoover, Annie Oakley, Davy Crockett Virginia Dare, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, Orville Wright, Benjamin Harrison, Leonard Bernstein, Lyndon B. Johnson, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Charles F. Kettering. • The following were admitted as part of the United States: Colorado, Missouri and Hawaii.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

CRAZY DAYS OF 5TH GRADE an Iggy the Iguana Book

FOR SALE

Written by Melissa M. Williams

ble a l i a Av ow! N

Crazy Days of 5th Grade is the 3rd book in the Iggy the Iguana chapter book series for children which focuses on themes of the upper elementary classroom, including making new friends, positive changes in learning styles and respect for others. When Iggy’s new teacher, Mr. Gruff the goat, continues to eat his homework, he realizes his old ways of studying are over. It will take the mind of a creative genius and a lot of make-believe to revitalize Iggy’s concentration in class. What started off as a lonely, boring school year missing his best friend Snap Shell the turtle, turns into a suspenseful ride that includes a strange encounter with a crab and an unexpected trip to the hospital. With the help of his friends and his little sister’s stuffed animals, Iggy discovers a hidden talent proving what he once considered a problem was really a gift in disguise.

Order your autographed copy this June at: www.IggytheIguana.com and receive a FREE Crazy Days bookmark.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
